"Ching Hai Day" Barbecue Celebration

[Perth] Local initiates have been working hard in recent months to show people that vegetarians can also eat "chicken," "ham," "pork" and "duck" without compromising their ethics or their often hard-to-please taste-buds. Consequently, it was only logical to celebrate the Third Anniversary of "Ching Hai Day" with a grand barbecue that included a cooking demonstration to show how simple and easy it is to prepare such delicious vegetarian foods.

Not surprisingly, more than one eyebrow was raised, but even more appetites were satisfied, when guests sampled the special vegetarian "chicken" kebabs. Over double the number of expected guest came for the celebration _ no doubt as a result of a national, ethnic radio station advertising the event on their weekly Au Lacese program. Fortunately vegetarian "chickens" and "cows" grow much larger than the average feathered and mooing variety, so there was sufficient food for all.

Not satisfied with cooking delicious meatless "meat," two local initiates, who formerly owned a bakery before they were initiated, baked a scrumptious 4-tired "Ching Hai Day" cake without cracking one egg shell. Could this mean that the humble chicken could soon find itself free to roam the range, so to speak? Judging by the satisfied grins on the cream and kebab smeared faces of guests, our feathered cousins should opt for early happy retirement as soon as possible.

A truly joyous day was had by all and ended in riotous laughter when initiates watched themselves on TV when the video recording of the day was played. All this must surely go a long way to proving that while Quan Yin initiates can certainly be accused of being down-right meatless and eggless at the very best of times, they can never be accused of being lifeless.

Master Poetry On TV

[Los Angeles] The airing of the very first segment of the program began in early October via KSCI Channel 18 and ICN (International Channel Network), bringing Master's grace and love to millions of viewers in southern California and around the country.

The program comprised of Master's recitation of Au Lac poems, in two separate collections entitled "Nhung Vet Tien Than" (Traces Of Previous Life) and "Duong Vao Tinh Su" (Path Of The Love Legends), has been broadcasted regularly every Saturday morning from 8:30 to 9:00 am PST since then with the second collection scheduled to be aired in mid-November. The successful broadcasting of Master's poetry has earned high comments from the Au Lac poets circle, including Nguyen Sa and Tran Van An, two prominent poets.

As requested by the audience, the fellow initiates continue putting this marvelous program on the air to inspire the poem lovers and those longing for spiritual Truth. Moreover, the airing of our program could not be made possible in an amazing short time without the help from the producer of the existing one hour program who offered to move his program time forward to make room for ours.

Besides television, fellow initiates in Los Angeles have become also actively engaged in the meaningful work of spreading Master's teachings via radio broadcasts. Three programs are currently being offered to the local listeners weekly in three different languages -- Au Lac, English and Chinese -- on channels CaliFM 106.3 FM, KPRO 1570 AM and KAZN 1300 AM, respectively. May this wonderful program be extended to many other cities throughout this beautiful country so that more people will have the opportunity to watch Master and receive Her great love and blessings.

Whole Life Expo In California

Sharing Spiritual Knowledge And Experience With Others...

[Los Angeles] Each year, a popular event called the Whole Life Expo is held at different locations throughout the United States. At this event, various vendors meet to share spiritual knowledge and experiences or healthful products with attendees. This year, we were fortunate enough to acquire a booth and participated in this special event. The video of "Suma Ching Hai Celestial Fashion Show" had captured the attention of many Expo participants and kept them in awe. Her unusual and elegantly designed outfits marveled even the most critical of spectators. One woman had stopped by to gather information on how to acquire one of her favorite fashion designs. Some wanted more information on their favorite jewelry. Still others wanted to just leave their names and numbers so that they could be contacted when Master comes.

Free booklets and magazines were offered to those interested in knowing more about Master. They were accepted in gratitude. One man breathlessly rushed to our table, and while trying to contain his excitement, he exclaimed, "Who is teaching this Quan Yin Method?" He then showed us his necklace bearing the word "Quan Yin" in Chinese characters.

Another man had commented that it does not take a highly developed being to recognize the soothing, magnetic field emitted at our booth due to Master's omnipresent blessing power.

[Denver] The Denver Whole Life Expo was exciting, fun, informative and diversified in content -- spirituality, the latest spiritual publications, annually discovered remedies, chemical free and herbal based medicines.

The Denver Center, in conjunction with the Association's vegetarian restaurant, brought a fresh, bright and enlightening aspect to this spectacular event through a dynamic display of Suma Ching Hai's publications and photos; as well as through a taste of "beyond this world" vegetarian cuisine. With inspiration to the body, mind and soul, everyone felt blissful and elevated with the days events.

Promoting Vegetariansim In Washington

[Seattle] Recently, the Taste of Health Show took place in Seattle. This show was organized by Earth save, a non-profit organization founded by John Robbins, author of "Diet for a New America" and "Reclaiming Our Health".

Vegetarian restaurants from around Seattle were invited to come along and serve samples of their cooking to the visitors at the show. Even though our group does not have a restaurant, we participated in the show to promote vegetarianism by selling Chinese and Vietnamese style vegetarian food. At the same time, we could display Master's works of art, publications and explain Master's teachings to those who showed interest.

Mankind vs. Health - Mankind vs. Nature

[Warsaw]A very profound body, mind and soul elevating Expo was held in Katowice, south Poland. Inspired by the event, the Warswa and Katowice Center participated, creating a wonder display of Suma Ching Hai's publication, works of art, photos, etceteras...

The peaceful atmosphere, love and enlightenment emanating from the booth touched the hearts of the visitors. Even children as young as two years old stopped, encouraging their parents to have a look at the magnificent display.

Through many soul-stirring conversations with the Polish people longing for the Truth, it was discovered that most Polish people are faithful to their religion. This Expo gave the Warsaw and Katowice Centers an opportunity to help people reconnect themselves with their great inner beauty, virtue and Truth. With the enlightenment given through Master and the Quan Yin Method, it is hoped that their daily and spiritual lives may be further enriched by incorporating the Quan Yin Method of meditation as part of their life style.

Our Language And Behavior Are Advertisement For The Truth

Actually, the ways of conveying the Truth to others are various, but we often don't think about it carefully. Miss Park has always lived in Korea, she is talented in art so she majored in sculpture. One day she visited the Ching Hai painting exhibition in Insadong, Seoul. She wondered at all of different techniques used in the paintings, at the many childlike, pure ideas, humorous explanations, wonderful symbolic meaning and daring colors. This inspired her to be initiated in Pusan. After one year, she left Korea to study computer graphics in the USA. It was there she had the opportunity to give a presentation in English despite her limited language power. She decide to write and do her presentation on vegetarianism.

She read Master's booklet more and more, and digested it. After she delivered her presentation tremblingly and stammering, the tutors and students applauded and asked the details of how to become vegetarian.

New Retreat Site In Codognan, Southern France

Usually, every month the Paris Center holds a two-day retreat. This time, the retreat was in the south of France in a house of a practitioner. It was a perfect location. To participate regularly in a retreat is a great help to our practice, specially when fellow practitioners live far away from each other and find it difficult to join group meditations. We were all so happy to get together in this most beautiful area, far from the big cities and meditate with Master's blessings. We all felt Her love. At the end of the mini-retreat, a tree in the garden was full of birds. Did they come for God's blessings too? We all felt happy and very enthusiastic to spread Master's teachings more, especially in those areas where there are only a few practitioners. For the inspiration, enlightenment,

spiritual growth and the opportunity to practice together, we must be grateful to Master whose loving heart, superlative examples and supreme efforts bring us endless benefits every moment of our lives.

Experiences Of A Wonderful Retreat By Nathalie, France (Originally In English)

I currently teach English in a Business School whose standards and requirements are getting higher every year and dealing with demanding students who all come from different backgrounds and have different needs and expectations. It can be very challenging. Taking a retreat break from all of this was really wonderful. Even the early morning rise was not difficult since we knew we were going to greet a great state of meditation. The chimney fire and friendly care helped us to feel at home and "return home" more easily. I was able to step back and look at things in a different way.

I also realized that things such as community life, sharing everything, and doing one's utmost to follow the precepts was greatly beneficial and fulfilling. These are true values and standards one should stick to in order to cope better with everyday life. Another detail about the retreat was the rain that sent us Master's blessings and help. Was it a good sign that this retreat would be followed by many others? I sincerely hope so.

November 11th was the second anniversary of my son's initiation with Master. I was away on a business trip overseas and was unable to celebrate the occasion with him. When I returned to Hong Kong on November 12th, the first thing I said to him was, "I am so sorry I could not make it home in time to celebrate your birthday with you." My son appeared exhilarated and in high spirits. He said, "I now truly understand what the initiation birthday is. Master gave me candies in my dream." When I saw the contented look that brightened up his face, tears fell from my eyes. During the many years that we have lived together, work has often taken me away from home. Since his initiation, he no longer complains. Instead, he has become more understanding as he revels in this love from our Mommy-Master.

Every moment, my son and I are immersed in the vast ocean of our Mother's love. Thank you, dear Mother! However strong the wind and turbulent the waves may be on our path of spiritual practice, we yearn to grow and mature in defiance of any harsh conditions as we make our way toward the other shore in unfaltering devotion. Only by doing that can we requite our Mother's love.

A little over three years ago when I first came into contact with Master's teachings, I barely noticed my surroundings as my consciousness was often clouded with negative thoughts, drugs and depression. To me, the world seemed like a chaotic, pitiful mess. Two years ago, just before and then after my initiation, I began to notice things I had previously overlooked. I was fascinated by nature and the process of growth in the spring time. Bird song and flowers became something that I would stop to appreciate, often with a childlike grin. This spring, I am filled with an ever increasing amazement as I detect in the trees a luminescent quality that I would have previously believed undetectable with the human eye. When one begins to see the true nature of things, even the ordinary and mundane become beautiful!

There is another story about a man, probably Japanese. He had an affair with the wife of a district chief or something like that. Then it was found out. So he was forced to kill the husband, and took the wife and ran away. Now both of them became thieves. But the adulterous woman was very greedy, so eventually this man was disgusted with her and left. He went to another place and did not steal anything anymore but became just a beggar. In the daytime, he would go out and beg for some food; and at night, he would come home. He began to dig a mountain, because there was a pass which was very dangerous. Many people had died there. He tried to do something good before he died; because he felt sorry for what he had done before, he thought he was very bad. Now not only did he repent his mistakes, but he tried to make up for them by doing something else better. Not only say, "Oh, I am sorry, I'll never do it again," and finish; but we have to do some counter-actions to make up for what we had done before.

So now this man, he dug the mountain pass everyday, every night alone. Then one day, the son of the district chief, the man whom he killed before caught up with him and wanted to kill him. So this digging man said, "I am willingly to give my life to you, you can kill me; but let me finish this, the only good thing in my life firs; then you can kill me." The boy said, "Okay." So he stayed around, hung around, and waited. But then he got bored, nothing to do. So he helped the man to dig the mountain pass also. After sometime the tunnel through the mountain was finished and everyone could go through it safely. The man, the killer said to the son, "Now you can kill me.

"But then the son of the enemy knelt down, cried, and said to the man, "How can I kill you? You have become my teacher." Because during the years that they worked together digging the tunnel, the son, the boy had become very impressed by the good qualities of the man whom he wanted to kill, and who was supposed to be his enemy before. But now, he changed completely. He only thought of good and positive things -- of offering, of sacrifice, and not other things.

Before perhaps, he was originally a good man. But he was probably seduced by this bad woman and then because of her, he did these bad things. Then because he was good, therefore he knew that was bad and left her, and became his original self. Therefore, it doesn't matter how bad he was, it doesn't matter whether he was bad or he was originally good. But because he repented and he completely wanted to change himself and he wanted to do something for the society, for other people, therefore he also impressed his enemy, the one who want to kill him. And not only impressed him, but changed him into a nonviolent person.

It didn't matter how good the son was, if he wanted to kill that person, he would be in trouble. He would have this killing guilt within his heart all the time, and it would be no good for anyone. Therefore he transformed that person into another good person. Not only he transformed himself, but he transformed the enemy and he transformed the hatred between the two families into goodness and friendship. This is a great thing.

Therefore you see cultivating ourselves is very, very important and it is truly the only way. If we want to cultivate the world, if we want to help the world, we must truly cultivate and improve ourselves. There is no other way. So the way we are practicing together is inside and out. Inside we contact the almighty power through the Quan Yin Method, through the light and sound everyday; so that we can have more strength to transform the outer character, and the outer habits that we have accumulated not only since birth but since many thousands, hundreds of thousands of births.

This is very strong indeed, so we have to use the inner power and the determination to change it. It's very difficult, I know; but we must do it. If we don't do it this life, we have to come back and do it again next life. Next life don't do it, have to come back again and again and again, suffer a lot of things. If you are lazy now and don't want to practice with me the method that I have taught you, well, it's up to you. You can come back again, many times; you are welcome. I don't need to come back, I have other things to do.

Meditate sincerely. Always pray before, so that you can cut through the thin veil, the thin curtain that separates us -- the illusion of world, from the knowledge of the Truth. It's only very thin. So thin like smoke. If you pierce that curtain, you know many things, you know everything. If you do not, you remain forever ignorant. That's the only difference between a sage and a common ignorant person. Only a very thin curtain.

In the Bible it is also said, The road to heaven is so thin like a razor's blade. It's the separation between heaven and earth. Some Indian sutras, some Indian bibles say, The difference between knowledge and the ignorant is one hair apart... So thin!

It is true like that, like the curtain that you see when you meditate. You saw that it was so thin and so fragile that you could penetrate it anytime, but it's difficult. Sometime, you see it and then it disappears. You can not concentrate there. Try, keep doing it. Just like the man who dug the mountain, made a tunnel out of it. Saved his life, saved the life and conscience of the son of the enemy, as well as saved the lives of many other innocent people. The story might be true or not, but it's similar to our meditation practice. We have to penetrate the tunnel between life and death. Save ourselves, save many people.

So many kinds of vegetarians, you must understand. There is a saying in Au Lac. They say that the vegetarian in the heart is the best. Why do they say that? It is because our actions, speech and thoughts must be together, uniform; we don't just eat vegetarian only. That's only action wise. Then when we talk, we talk like having scissors or a stone and cutting everywhere; that is not vegetarian talk.

If we say we eat vegetarian, but our thoughts are very violent and sharp, and do not care about other people's feelings and always being selfish, always trying to get everything for ourselves first, at any cost, at the cost of other people's convenience or feelings, then it's no good. No good for us, no good for the family; and then at large, it's no good for the nation and for the world. That's why the Chinese people say, "First we have to cultivate our own self, the big Self, the Wisdom, then we can take care of the family, then we can take care of the nation, and then we can pacify the whole planet." That is quite true.

However, most people, they just want to pacify the planet. You know, leap frog, quick, quick! Otherwise, "Oh, take care of ourselves? That I know already. Take care of my family? Oh, my wife can do it. Take care of the nation? Oh, well President Clinton does it. I take care of the whole world the best." That's what they think. It would be better we begin from ourselves.

An Unusual Reader By Sister Initiate Hiep Thie Pham, Toronto, Canada (Originally In English)

One morning a man called me from the Toronto International Airport and said he was a reader of the Suma Ching Hai News magazine. He just arrived from Singapore to settle down in Toronto, Canada. He did not know anyone in this new country except my name from the list of contact persons in Master's News magazine. He asked me to help him to find a place to live. I told him to call back in an hour so I could have time to find a way to help him. I called one of our sister initiates and informed her of his story. She immediately phoned one of her friends who had a room available for rent at a price that the man could afford. The arrangement was completed within fifteen minutes over the phone. The man called me back in the afternoon to thank me and wanted to meet me to know more about myself and our group. When this unexpected job was finished, I knew that this was Master's arrangement because every time I call this sister initiate, she is usually not home. Today she picked up the phone on the first ring and usually it would take weeks in order to find a suitable room or apartment in Toronto.

Only by reading Master's News magazine, this man was already taken care of by our compassionate Master. If we, fellow initiates, practice diligently, we become carefree and fearless. Master's love for all sentient beings is really boundless!!!!

Early this year, my second older sister gave me a copy of Master's sample booklet. Bliss filled my heart as I read it. Before that, some relatives had given me sample booklets from other masters, but I didn't have any feelings after reading them.

Having read Master's sample booklet, spontaneously and without any pressure I began to observe a vegetarian diet and practiced the Convenient Method. However, I still could not quit my deep addiction to cigarette smoking; I used to consume several packs a day.

One day, I noticed that Master's poster hanging on the wall in my room kept falling off even though I had affixed it with double-sided tape. A thought flashed through my mind: Could the cause be that I had been smoking in the room? I decided not to smoke in that room anymore. Hence, Master's poster didn't fall off again, and I hadn't even changed the adhesive tape!

I was unmindful and was blinded by my bad habit then, so I overlooked Master's loving expectation, concern and call to me! Nevertheless, She continued to take care of me while I was practicing the Convenient Method. My heart was deeply stirred and moved. Subsequently, I quit my addiction to smoking easily. Until now, that intense feeling of gratitude is still reverberating in my heart, nourishing my soul while I walk on the spiritual path.

There was a petty thief who stole a duck and ate it. However, the duck he stole belonged to a very kind man; and something very strange happened to the thief after he ate the stolen duck. Duck feathers suddenly began to grow all over his body. He felt miserable and very itchy. He knew that it was a punishment, a retribution from what he had done, so he quickly repented. Everyday he prayed to the gods and asked for forgiveness.

Then in his dream a god said to him, "It was because you stole and ate a very kind man's duck that you are in this state. If you want to recover, you should go to the kind gentleman and ask him to scold you. Your problem will be cured!"

Then the thief went to the home of the duck owner and pretended, "Oh! I heard that you lost a duck. I know that it was one of my neighbors who stole it. If you scold him once, he will definitely be scared and return the duck to you."

The owner, being a very kind man, said, "Oh! It is only a duck. If it's gone, it's gone! Perhaps that person took it and ate it because he was very hungry. Besides, I don't have any proof at all. Why should I scold him? I don't want to do that! I can't be sure whether it was him or not. If he was hungry, let him eat it! It was only a duck. There is no need for any scolding!"

The thief was terrified because the owner would not scold him, so he said, "Oh! I am sorry. Please! It was I who stole the duck! If you don't scold me, I will suffer miserably. Duck feathers are growing all over my body. Should you scold me just once, I will be cured!" After hearing that, the owner of the duck was moved and gave him a scolding. Sure enough, the thief recovered.

There is a story in India. It is about a little bird. This little bird always watched the moon whenever it was visible. It kept its eyes on the moon and never stopped! It even forgot to drink water. At that time, another bird flew over and saw that the little bird was very thirsty and had became very dry, and so it said, "Why don't you go and drink some water?"

The little bird replied, "If I went and drank some water, then at that moment, I wouldn't be able to see the moon." It was afraid that it wouldn't see the moon when it lowered its head to drink water. If we could think of God to this extent, we would definitely attain Buddhahood, and be one with God!

In the country of the ancient Inca civilization where their ancestors believe that human comes from light and everything has a vibration and life, there is such a pure spiritual atmosphere.

We also discovered that the ancient Incas used three kinds of animals to symbolize the three stages of spiritual evolution of human beings. In the first stage, they used the snake to represent the material realm. In the second stage, the puma was used to symbolize equilibrium. The third symbol was the condor that stood for intelligence, awareness and the transcendental voyage back to haven, or the light.

Even today this pure spiritual atmosphere of the ancient Incas attracts thousands of visitors to Cusco every year, coming to pay respect to the remnants of the superlative ancient civilization. Inspired by Master's love and blessings, and the longing of the spiritual aspirants here, fellow practitioners went to Cusco to bring Master's message of Truth.

Knowing our intention to convene a video seminar the Chief Officer of the National Cultural Institute Dr. Jose Altamirano Vallenas gave us his earnest support. Besides providing us a free venue for the seminar and the required projection equipment, he also made all the arrangements for the newspapers advertisement and television and radio interviews. Before the seminar, the two local newspapers -- El Sol and El Commercial voluntarily published a brief introduction of Master, and news about the seminar. Introduced by a fellow practitioner, we got in touch with Mr. Mario Carrion Astete, a program host of the local radio. With his full support, Master's teachings were broadcasted on the local radio and television stations. He even made arrangement for us to be interviewed by the radio station at the university where he was teaching.

All this unexpected help and warmth from the people made us feel wonderful and encouraged. Truly we are never alone when we devote ourselves to the cultivation of the Truth, The response to the seminar was overwhelming and joyful. The thunderous applause from the audience and the many profound spiritual questions, when the playing of Master's lecture videotape ended, showed the high respect of the local people towards spiritual teachings.

Yes, it was time! We hope the weary souls will soon find their way back to the Truth, to the eternal light.

Barriers Set Up By Angels To Confine Human Beings By Suma Ching Hai, Hsihu Center, Formosa December 28, 1991 (Originally In Chinese)

The other day, didn't I tell you a story about how we are being shut up in here, locked on the outside, and watched by the angels and celestial guards? (A: Yes) Perhaps you would ask me how they can confine us. They use the three realms!

The first barrier -- like the prisons in our world, there are three or four gates. When I went to Hualien to visit the prisoners and to deliver a lecture, I had to pass through several gates before I could reach them. On the outer most wall, there is a barbed wire on top. Heavy criminals were bound by iron chains, and they couldn't even leave their own cell, never mind walk out through those gates. However, some prisoners could move about freely; they could work sweeping the floor, planting and watering trees. They had greater freedom; some of them could pass through some gates and go out until they almost reached the outer most wall!

The situation is similar for us spiritual practitioners. Some pass through three or four gates and reach the fourth realm, but they are stopped by the wall. Only when they have gone out of the main gate and the great wall, they are truly free. That is how we are imprisoned within the three realms. Then, how are we confined by the first realm, the so-called Astral world?

Bound By Feelings Of Affection Of The Astral World

What is the situation within the Astral world? Here they use affection and feelings to bind us. There is no need to use force, scolding or iron chains. Can you understand the situation? Therefore, all human beings here are involved in affection. It could be between man and woman, or even woman and woman, or man and man.

Affection is a much better tool than iron locks and chains. Most of us cannot escape when we are bound by affection! It is difficult for us to leave when we want. It takes tremendous willpower, intense penitence generated from within, or very great courage, very sincere longing, to get help from the enlightened beings. Then they will give us a push so that we can transcend the Astral world.

If any of us are still bound by affection and have lots of love affairs, we know we are still within the Astral level. Then we'd better stop boasting, and try to realize that we still have not overcome the first barrier. That is why since ancient times, people always respect monastic practitioners. They think they have at least gone beyond the Astral level -- the first gate.

Like the inmates in the prison, some of them have committed very serious crimes, so they are confined in a cell so small that they can't even stand up straight. Some even more serious criminals are even bound by chains, and they can never pass through the first gate. Some inmates can go out of the first gate and join the work on the prison grounds, so they are more free. Naturally those jailed in small cells envy them very much. In their cells, they can't even see the sun or other people. Even their relatives and friends are not allowed to visit them, not even the lawyer. They are waiting for death -- their execution. Of course, they really envy the inmates who can get out of the first gate, and move about freely.

Similarly, we think that monastic practitioners have surpassed the level of affection and are free of these feelings, so we respect them. Otherwise, what is the difference? They cannot be regarded as monastic practitioners unless they have surpassed the level of affection. This is a kind of lock!

It is very difficult to pass through the first barrier, but once we have overcome it, the other barriers are easier to surpass. Only when a prisoner has behaved well would the guards allow him to move around and join the work. After a while, observing that he is doing well in his work, they have more confidence in him. Very soon, he can go out of the second gate easily. If his behavior continues to improve, it would be easier for him to get out -- not out of the prison, but to be allowed to work more, and earn more confidence from the guards. He wouldn't be heavily locked up, beaten, or reprimanded.

Realm Of Karma -- Difficult To Escape The Law Of Karma.

We call the second barrier the realm of karma. How does it bind us? What have the angels created for us? Even after we have passed through the first barrier, the angels have prepared a second one, so we cannot go up immediately to attack them, create trouble, make a mess of heaven, and ruin the peaceful atmosphere of the universe. Therefore, there are barriers after barriers to stop us, and to let them observe us. If we could reach the Heavenly Kingdom right after we have conquered the first barricade, they would be in trouble. So, there is another barrier. What method do they use this time? They control us with the low of cause and effect. But how? The way is: whatever we do in this world, no matter good or bad, will yield fruit. Therefore, we must come back. If we have done bad deeds, we come back to suffer; if we have done good deeds, we come back to enjoy. While enjoying, we might do evil things by the way. The more we enjoy, the more likely we will fall in the trap. When the situation turns bad, we suffer and become frustrated, and so are more inclined to do bad deeds. Whatever situations are deadly for us, these are the traps!

We created this situation because we were bad. Previously, the deities, celestial beings and angels felt sympathetic to our backward and painful conditions after we had been condemned to earth, so they spoke to God: "Let us go there to educate them again, or at least to minimize their suffering." When God first kicked Adam and Eve down here, Hes meant to let them suffer! They had to work hard to earn their daily bread. By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, as mentioned in the Bible. God "blessed" them!

After a very long time, as their offspring didn't commit any sin, and the evils had only been committed by their ancestors, the angels and celestial beings were sympathetic to them. Not able to stand the great suffer on earth, they beseeched God: "Please let us go to help them. They have been behaving well. They are only their children and grandchildren, and they are no longer malicious. The guilty ones were their ancestors; please give them a chance..."

God, being merciful after all, said, "Okay!"

The angels came and taught us many magical powers, and ways to improve our lives--how to make efficient machines to make our lives more comfortable, and less painful. Some more advanced scientists came from above to teach us scientific technologies that were secrets of the universe. Unexpectedly, after we had learnt part of it, we wanted to learn all. Before we had learnt it well, our evil thoughts and greed emerged. We were proud of being able to produce many things. Thinking that we were comparable to the angels, we forced them to teach us everything.

The angels said, "Take it easy! Concentrate on doing this first and let us see how you do. The other things can only be used when you have improved in morality and wisdom. It is not the time yet. We cannot teach you the superlative magical powers of the highest realm now."

However they insisted and threatened the angels: "We know how to do many things now! We can produce all kinds of weapons, and we have many magical powers. Since you refuse to give us more, we will rob you." They were like the martial art students who want to fight with their master. Though they were only novices, they thought they were powerful enough to challenge their teachers.

Naturally the angels refused. "No way! Superlative magical power and wisdom must go with great virtues. Otherwise, you will do evil things, or you simply will not be able to use them." They wouldn't listen, and decided to rob. They had all the weapons ready, and then charged up to threaten the beings there. They really succeeded in reaching there, so the guards of the universe reacted. They used more forceful magical powers and weapons to destroy our weapons, and then sent our people back to where they belonged. Some of them didn't make the return trip, and died there. The story was roughly like this.

Since then the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas didn't trust us anymore, and would not give us anymore magical powers. However, the magical powers that were learnt in previous lives had not been eradicated, so there are still some traces remaining in some of us. This is why some people can suddenly perform madras or magical incantations though they have not learnt them. These are impressions left over from their previous lives. They include those who can make atomic bombs, black bombs, white bombs and so on; they are all bad guys! (Master and everyone laugh.)

After destroying our cosmic weapons, the angels locked us in here. How did they manage to lock us up? They couldn't use chains, nor could they use ordinary magical powers, because we had learnt them all. We knew how to break through and escape. Therefore, they devised a flexible way to subdue our forces -- with feelings affection and karma. They created a system of karmic laws in which we are born and destroyed. They virtually don't have to have anything to do with us; it is truly incredible! Whether you may have done good or bad things, you must come back, reincarnate. This is really great! Since then, we have been chained until now. We can never escape; no matter how hard we try, we just can't go up.

Like the main gate of a prison, you can only get out by going through it. Dig a tunnel or try anything, sooner or later you will be captured by the police. Once you are caught, your penalty will be increased, and you will be locked up more tightly. That is why most people fail to get liberation practicing and meditating on their own. They try to dig a tunnel or make a hole in the wall, but that only leads to more serious consequences. We say they are possessed. Therefore, the law of karma is a chain, a lock or a gate keeping us here. That is how it works. It is devised by the angels. Otherwise, how can they keep us here?

Wow! We used to have great magical powers. It took us just minutes to go to Jupiter, Mars or the sun. Equipped with powerful weapons and great magical powers, no one could stop us. We had great wisdom, but we only used it to do evil things. The human beings then were still barbarous and immoral. They wouldn't listen to moral teachings!

Perhaps the angels thought that we were as benevolent as they were, so they didn't pay much attention to morality. They didn't teach people to observe the five precepts and get the initiation before they practiced meditation. They only taught them how to meditate. Meat eating was not prohibited, and the precepts were not observed, so people didn't develop their moral and benevolent aspects. If a person is immoral and holding a high position in the government, the greater his power is, the more harm he could do to the people.

In the olden days, the angels made a mistake by neglecting to develop our morality, and concentrating solely on taking care of our material aspects. They saw human beings in great pain, shedding tears and sweat the whole day long yet didn't have enough to eat, not knowing how to use fertilizers in farming, and ignorant to most civilized things. They gained very little in whatever they did, because God had sentenced, By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread. Hes didn't say that we could save up something and put it in the bank; Hes only said "Eat just enough to survive." Anyway, there were no banks then! Hes didn't think about it; Hes said it was good enough that we had enough to use. God was truly honest and clean. Hes never thought about banks or loans. (Master laughs.) Such a system didn't exist then. So, when the celestial beings saw human beings in great pain, they cared only about the material aspects, and forgot that morality was more important. If people have no morality, they would only become worse when given many material things. They could neither cherish it, keep their wealth, nor share with other people. When they have the power and wealth, they would use it to do evil things.

If you watch the television, read newspapers or books, you may find that our history was full of high officials who were corrupt. They exploited the people and stole their wealth. The higher their position was, the worse they became. Eventually, the whole government was corrupted. If those people were not high officials but poor farmers instead, they wouldn't have the chance to do so much harm. At the most, they could only do minor things like cheating their neighbor out of a piece of land, or earning more money from people through dishonest transactions. Since they were officers, they could deceive many people. The higher their rank was, the more people they could intimidate. Therefore, it is very dangerous to have a high official who lacks morality.

Similarly, no one taught our ancestors about ethics. The angels were so benign, merciful, and virtuous themselves; so they never thought that we lacked ethics. There must be a reason for God to condemn us to earth; the lack of morality was precisely the reason. Otherwise, we would be eligible to live in heaven! We came here because of our flawed quality, just like a student who has to stay behind for another year.

Observing we were short of material things, the angels took pity on us and quickly gave us help, just like when we go to give relief to the disaster victims. When we went to help the victims in the Philippines, we also gave priority to material supplies, because we worried that they might starve. Therefore, when we went to the Philippines, Au Lac or Mainland China to ease the disastrous situations, we seldom talked about other things. I only reminded them: "Our material help rendered to them is only temporary. At least take care of their soul, and teach them to pray inwardly to God for help, so that they can be liberated from suffering forever. Furthermore, advise them to be a good person, and try to be a vegetarian, and so on. Introduce some teachings to them to help them to understand."

Otherwise, they would think that it was good enough just to take along rice, food and money. It might be good for a couple of months, but only to sustain the physical body. We might have the body today but may lose it tomorrow; it cannot be saved permanently. When we help people, it is really not important to take care of their body, because it is ephemeral. It may be lost in a traffic accident tomorrow, or in an earthquake, or washed away by a flood. There is nothing we should be proud about in doing the relief activities. It is really nothing to help sustaining their physical bodies for a couple of months!

If these people died later, they would still suffer the same painful things when they come back. If they managed to escape the flood here, they could run into a huge fire in another place. Or they would be born again and then run into a fire disaster... nothing is for sure! So we took the opportunity to tell them about the way to liberation, advise them to become a vegetarian, or to sincerely repent and pray to God for help. Then perhaps they will meet an enlightened Master when they come back next life. This is the genuine disaster relief. Otherwise, we may have saved them this time, yet they might soon meet another disaster. Who can guarantee there won't be anymore floods, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions?

That was the first time for the angels to get in touch with humans, so they didn't give it thorough enough thought! Previously, when our monastic disciples went to render relief, they also didn't think things through thoroughly. God also doesn't think too much about it, because Hes is enjoying grape wine and delicacies in heaven! If human beings are in great pain, it is their business; God doesn't suffer, so Hes doesn't know! That is why you may notice some wealthy people who are apathetic to the poor. They are not particularly vicious or stingy, but they don't know what sufferings the poor have that need their help. Being healthy ourselves, we cannot discern the pain of people who are ill. It is just like what people say: We cannot realize the painful intent of parents without ourselves giving birth to babies. This is very true.

I also have the same experience. Only when I am ill will I think about the pain of ill people. Therefore, when I am ill, I won't pray for my own recovery, because I fear I might forget the pain of the ill people when I have recovered. So, I just let it be, and I won't pray! When I do pray, I would ask God, "If it is possible, let me fall ill for other people, if only my illness or suffering could be exchanged to give them happiness."

After the angels taught us some magical powers, the viciousness and brutality within us emerged, and it was too late to restrain them! We didn't develop our morality at the same time. They only taught us magical powers but not the ethics, so it was too late then! We already got the magical powers and power, and it was too late to train our morality. Therefore, the angels had to use these methods to bind us.

You may ask me: "The first barrier is feelings of affection, and the second barrier is karma. That should be sufficient, but then why is the third barrier necessary? And what is the fourth realm for? It is for safety's sake! Observe the prisoners in a prison. They are chained, and there are many gates inside reinforced by barbed wire and an outer wall guarded by many police officers. They also have a system that can stop escapees immediately, like the electric fence for instance. When someone climbs it, he is shocked and fall down! There is no need to catch him. They also have radar and alarms. If someone crawls out, the alarm screams, letting the whole world know.

No Exit From The Three Realms Before The Ego Is Eliminated.

Similarly, people on earth are already in great pain for being shut behind two gates and not being able to escape. Yet they still put up a third gate. What is the third gate for? Is's in case a person is very clever, and knows that bad deeds will lead to bad retribution, and good deeds will also lead to good retribution, what if he didn't do any good or bad deeds, and so enters the third realm? If there wasn't another wall in the third realm, he would have gone straight to the Heavenly Kingdom!

Though he didn't do any good or bad things, it didn't mean that he was benevolent. Perhaps he had conceived a very good plan, as he knew that he would be bound by whatever he did. He decided not to have any feelings of affection! "We can always wait until we get up there. There are beautiful celestial ladies above, so why be confined here? From today, we decide not to have feelings of affection among ourselves, refrain from doing any good or bad things, and see if we can go out or not." We still couldn't get out, because the angels had thought of it. They are smarter than us; perhaps they were afraid of us, because we were really "terrific".

So, there is a third barrier after the second one. How does the third barrier stop us? We have no feelings of affection, and we have not done any good or bad things, then what else can confine or control us? Do you remember what is the characteristic of the third realm? It is the power of Creation. The Brahma is the creator within the three realms. The so-called creator that we know is only within the three realms. The creator recognized by most of us is this Brahma.

How can the angels bind us while giving us this power of the creator at the same time? It is because, though we have reached that level, we still have the ego. We still remind ourselves not to do good or bad things. Since we have the power, intelligence and will to control ourselves, we still have the ego. If we have the magical power to create something, we'll be even more arrogant. Although this arrogance is a nobler one, it is still arrogance.

"Wow! I am great! Now I can write poems, play the piano, paint, and do anything. Many of my abilities have emerged!" Consequently, we become more arrogant. As we are still within the three realms, we cannot control the ego. We have not trained our morality, suppressed the ego everyday, and learnt to be humble; so the more we have achieved or created, the greater is our arrogance. That is how we are stuck there.

Or, we will be very proud if we have become wiser or more fluent in debating. "I am better than he, as he lost the debate to me. I am a graduate, he is not. I can do this while he can't..." Just for example, or: "I am remorseful, he is not. People say that Master loves people who are remorseful! You see I am remorseful. I am really great!" Can you imagine that even repentance can lead to arrogance? Anything that we can create can make us feel proud. Therefore, it is extremely difficult for us to transcend the third realm. Everyone just keeps transmigrating within the three realms, thinking that they are supreme and very great.

People who are humble would say: "Wow! I am very humble; I am humbler than he. Who is humbler than I?" People who are close to Master would think that they are great. "Master trusts me! There must be something special about me." Those who cannot get close to Master would console themselves: "Those people close to Master are demons. (Master and everyone laugh.) I am not seriously ill, so Master doesn't call me to Her side. (Master and everyone laugh.)

The angels were really ingenious; I truly admire them! This is the only way to control human beings, because we are extremely clever, aren't we? We can make anything. We can go to the bottom of the sea, traverse outer space, and land on Mars. We have not even spared the moon; only the sun is too hot, (Master and everyone laugh) so we don't dare to get too close.

Otherwise, the sun would soon be trembling. It fears that we might go and rob its heat energy, (Master and everyone laugh) and leave it frozen to death. (Master and everyone laugh.) We have already started to steal its heat, haven't we? (A: Solar energy) We are making this and conceiving that. The sun is beginning to shiver.

Wow! It is horrible! Who can stop us? We even massacre our own kind, so who can intimidate us? People of this country are killing those in another country; this person is killing that person; it is an atmosphere of struggling for life and death! Fighting is going on everyday. We don't even have sympathy on our own kind, who else would we be afraid of? The angels are invisible to us, and they also have no relationship with us, so we'd just steal from them if we could. The system within the three realms that confines us here is truly incredible, and is more powerful than any magical powers that we have learnt. Otherwise, with the magical power that we had learnt then, we could break through thirty realms, not to mention only three! Previously, we could tear open the defensive layer of the planets and go up.

Originally, each planet had its defense shield. People couldn't break through if they didn't know the method. The angels were so stupid that they taught us how to dissolve the magnetic field; subsequently we managed to break through. Otherwise, we could never do it. It is just like each nation has its frontier guarded by the customs and police officers. Only when you have a visa will they allow you to enter and live there for a limited period of time.

Originally they didn't mean to strike our earth so forcefully. As they wanted to destroy our powerful weapons, they had to use very great force. Not only our earth was affected, several planets close to us or on the same orbit as us were influenced by the blow. Consequently, the plants on some planets completely vanished. No humans could live there, and the soil became unfit for agriculture. It become very dangerous on these planets, because there was no air or protective atmosphere. Humans would die if they lived there, so they dug holes and lived underground. Even the trees and flowers were moved underground. Houses were also built there, with a protective shield above them. If they wanted to go out, they had to open the gate quickly and rush into the UFO. When they came back, they again rushed down from the UFO. They could not expose themselves to the air, or they would be killed. The atmosphere was so highly toxic that it was lethal to both plants and humans.

For instance, we know that some gases are poisonous and lethal. We will get ourselves killed if we are careless. Those planets affected by the blow produced a toxic atmosphere that was lethal to life forms. Of course, the situation would improve after several thousand years, but not recover fully. Therefore, we cannot say that, when we alone or our planet has done something, we are the only ones to bear the consequences. Sometimes, other people are also affected.

At that time, we went up to attack several planets, and naturally they retaliated. Though the Buddhas told them not to do it, that was their natural reaction. As a result, they also incurred karma that they had to repay later. This was really troublesome.

The Fourth Realm -- A Safety Zone Shielding The Pureland.

Finally, there is the fourth realm -- the last safety zone. It is similar to the prison that we put the prisoners in. Though they might have gained more freedom, learnt to be smarter, and look better outwardly, we cannot let them loose on the streets because they are still prisoners! They have not paid for their crimes or served their term. Having too much freedom may make them feel restless and act rebelliously. So, we still need an outer wall. They are free to pass through several gates without the guards interfering, but they must go back to sleep in their cells at night, to keep them from doing bad things. They are not sure what they are thinking of inside. They only look good on the outside, but we cannot read their minds. That is why the wall is necessary.

Similarly, we have supposedly become very benevolent when we have reached the third realm. For instance, we are not bound by any feelings of affection, we can control ourselves, we have wisdom, eloquence in speech and the power of the creator. However, no one knows whether or not we are virtuous within, and have reached the egoless state. So, we are not allowed to go up at will. What if we learn some reckless things, and then come back to hurt people? We might even attack the angels like what we did before. Therefore, it is not safe enough to have only three barriers!

We will regain our freedom at the fourth realm. We are more free since we have no karma, and we have power and wisdom. However, our inner soul is still under observation. Therefore, the higher we go, the more trials we will encounter. Sigh! The Gods/Buddhas dare not trust us anymore. What if we attack their thrones with guns and knives? (Master and everyone laugh.) We might threaten the Quan Yin Bodhisattva, or demand Shakyamuni Buddha to surrender: "Quickly summon all Your disciples (Master and everyone laugh) and tell them to obey our orders!" Seeing that Shakyamuni Buddha was being held hostage, they wouldn't dare to do anything, and all the angels would surrender. Can you imagine what kind of situations could happen?

That is why the fourth realm is so vast and dark, so long and difficult to pass through. It is the last protective zone of the superior worlds. When we reach the third realm, we are already something. We have magical powers, are clever, able to invent things, and free from the bondage of feelings of affection. Wow! We have strong willpower and incredible power! If we go up to plunder their world, the Buddhas would be in grave trouble. It would be too late to stop us!

Therefore, the fourth realm is the most difficult to pass through. Without an enlightened Master as guarantor, we can never make it. We are allowed to roam about freely in the third or even the fourth realm, we can stay there. We can fly around freely, and enjoy the light of sixteen thousand suns; but that is all, nothing more. We can go anywhere except upwards. The hidden passage will not appear to you unless you have an enlightened Master guiding you. It is like a secret door that requires a secret code to open. Only one or two persons know it, just like a national defense secret. Some buttons or secret codes are known only to a limited number of people in the Defense Department. No one else knows; because they fear it will be found out by enemy spies, then they will be in trouble.

Now you know what the four realms are for? Isn't it a very logical system? (A: Yes) It is nothing mysterious. You don't have to guess blindly or doubt my words. "Why is it like this? Is it really like this?" Do you have anymore doubts? (A: No)

Barriers Set Up By Angels To Confine Human Beings

If we are still attached to anything of the world, then we are in the shadow of losing it in any moment. We can only rely on Him, the inner master, the Almighty power. Then we are really fearless, at ease and liberated.

I've always been the beloved daughter of God since my childhood, because in some way, without much effort I own some things which others don't even if they have a strong desire and work very hard for them. Some of them are very jealous of me. But I am not proud of these things because I know deeply in my heart that all these things come from God, not me. Every time if I am too attached to those things or rely too much them, do not have the gratefulness of God or forget His love, then He will take them away from me to cleanse all the obstructions between He and I. Again and again He teaches me with endless patience, despite my tears and sorrows, to let me know what is really important and let me get closer and closer to Him. It's not that He is so narrow-minded to need my thanks; but if I love anything more than Him, then it will be the obstacle between He and I, keeping me away from Him.

So every time He takes something away from my hand, there is always His mercy, compassion and blessings hidden deeply in it. It's said in the Bible, "If God closes a door, then He will open another window for you." Master also told us a story about a lady and a king. The king told the lady that she could take any one thing from his palace if she wished. The wise lady choose to take the king himself. Because when she owned the king, then she owned the whole kingdom. It's the same if we surrendered everything, and rely on Him only; then we'll have everything He has created.

Master once told us, "As long as you practice goodness and fairness. there will be always a negative power to try to attack you, to try to make you stray from your purpose, trick into different directions, sidetrack you. So it takes a lot of determination and principles to control ourselves, to check our way, to check our life, so that you always grow in the right direction without regret, without complaining if you don't have any good result out of it.... But despite all these obstruction and ungratefulness of any kind, we still continue to improve. We still continue to improve ourselves to do what is right because it is right. Because it is the challenge of this world that we will always speak the way of God, we always speak the commandments of the conscience. I used to have the idea that we are safe if we have the initiation of a living master. But now I know that if we are not serious enough to ourselves in practice, if we don't have strong faith and true sincerity in the path, if we are not worthy of the method that Master transmitted to us, then we can not pass all the trials. I begged God with tears, " Please don't be so strict to the sentient beings in this world. Because it's a pity if one fails off the path after the initiation." But I received His supreme love from this strict and harsh lesson; and with tears and sorrows, I attained the courage to face the whole world if I am on the righteous side. I don't think that I could have made it through before. Master told us many times that the Golden Age is coming soon. I've learned from the holy scriptures that people can communicate with God directly in the Golden Age. When we really rely on Him only and listen to the instructions of the Supreme wisdom directly, we are in the Golden Age right now!

Love! Compassion! Respect! Bliss! Harmony! Happiness! No attachment! Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a world like that? Wouldn't it be nice if one could make this planet just a little better for all of us? I have learned that you can create your own heaven, your own nirvana, your own Pure Land. By meditating everyday, my world is becoming better, my heaven is becoming greater and it becomes easier to practice the precepts.

There was a time, in the beginning, when I felt frustrated and agitated; I was trying too hard to create my own heaven. I tried to deal with bad habits and earthly desires directly. No matter how hard I tried, how much I forced myself to deal with these obstacles, I made little progress. I made promise after promise to stop this and that, but I soon found myself doing it again. Through Master's teachings, I discovered that I was going about it the wrong way. Instead of causing heartache and frustration and achieving very little, it would be better to meditate and then the problem will go away gradually and all by itself. Simple. And above all, you grow spiritually.

Aggression, attachment, lying, lack of compassion and many other things are bad habits we have accumulated. As washing powder washes clean, so meditation washes us, gently cleaning us. It is powerful. There is no need for shock treatment or hurting yourself in trying to create your own heaven or in trying to deal with problems and obstacles. The positive effects from meditation will soon become evident in your life. A powerful and yet subtle force will fill your life and soon you will be in the heaven you always wanted. You may not even notice the change, but others will. Meditation is working for me. As I grow and make progress, I have more compassion; more love for other beings; my earthly desires and bad habits go away by themselves; and calm, harmony and happiness now fill my life. Wisdom fills my head. I feel that I can do anything as my talents are blossoming like beautiful flowers.

I feel like the king of my own heaven. Meditation works wonders!

I was an unhappy child when I was small. One day, I suddenly had an intense frightful and inauspicious feeling that mishaps could befall my family anytime. The good fortune in this moment couldn't guarantee the happiness of the next; we are playing joyously today, but we might be separated by death tomorrow... Since then, that fearful feeling has been with me and has made me live in anxiety and fear.

It continued until the day I met Master. The dark cloud that overshadowed me for so many years vanished. My life was again full of confidence and security, and I no longer senselessly worried about the safety of my relatives. I strode out from the darkness and marched into light. I knew Master would arrange and take care of everything for me. I knew the positive power of brightness would disperse the dark shadow.

After this turning point of my life, I could fearlessly explore this complicated and ever-changing world. I progressed steadily after I was initiated, and my self-suspicion was transformed into self-confidence. There were many things that I didn't believe I could do before, but now I have the courage to try, and to accomplish them with my persistence. I can also mix with people more harmoniously. In handling matters, I can care about other people's feelings apart from my own ideas, so it is easier to find the best solution.

Since I followed Master to practice spiritually, I can always maintain an ordinary state of mind. Many situations that would have greatly agitated me before, I can now face them with ease, and know how to solve them. I won't easily get excited, or be bound by some problems for a long time. Compared to the days before I was initiated, I have more time to enjoy life with a relaxed mind.

A Chi-Kung Master Finds The Supreme Master By Ohio News Group, USA

There is a Chinese chi-kung master who has a healing practice in Ohio, USA and is quite popular in the local area. Most of his clients are Americans who have lost faith in modern Western medicine because they have suffered from the side effects of medical methods that treat the symptoms instead of the whole being, and have lost hope in finding a cure for their illnesses. These Americans came to the chi-kung master in search of an alternative medical treatment from the East that could cure them.

The chi-kung master uses his energy, called "chi," to heal his patients. He must practice chi kung very diligently everyday in order to have enough "chi" to perform the healing. He heals by putting his hands on patients' pressure points. His energy can relieve their pain temporarily and relax them. His patients as well as other chi-kung masters respect him very much. This chi-kung master felt very good that the "chi," for which he had worked so very hard, could bring him such a successful career. In the beginning, he just wanted to practice chi-kung for self-healing. Since he practiced diligently day and night, he could attain enough energy to heal himself and others. People who admired him very much called him a master of chi-kung.

One day this chi-kung master received a dinner invitation from a friend who wrote books on the subject. The friend admired this master very much because the friend only knew the theory of chi-kung but he had not yet achieved a comparable level. When this master arrived at his friend's house, the friend told the master about his problem with his wife over the subject of chi-kung.

The friend's wife has Ph.D. in neurology and an M.D. in psychiatry. She had also practiced chi-kung for a long time and had reached a fairly high level of advancement. One day he and his wife went to a health exposition in Columbus, Ohio so that he could demonstrate chi-kung to the public. His wife stopped at the Quan Yin booth and picked up a sample booklet. After reading the booklet, she became a vegetarian and began practicing the Convenient Method.

Subsequently, she received initiation from Master Ching Hai. This upset her husband very much because he had written a book praising chi-kung meditation and now his wife left it to practice another method. He grew angrier when he told the chi-kung master about how his wife enjoyed practicing the Quan Yin method and believed that it was much better than chi-kung. She even dared to say that she practiced more efficiently being near Master Ching Hai at the 7-day retreat in Cambodia than when practicing at home. She told him that she had many inner experiences.

The chi-kung master asked his friend, "What do you want me to do today?

"His friend sighed and said, "My wife admires you very much because you have really obtained the chi and have the power to heal other people. Can you explain to my wife that our chi-kung method is better than the Quan Yin meditation?"

The chi-kung master nodded his head and said, "Oh, sure, our chi-kung meditation is the best." So the friend called his wife out to talk to the chi-kung master. The master talked about the many methods that he had tried and how very hard he practiced every day on each method. From his experience so far, chi-kung was the best.

His friend's wife did not say much, but instead gave the chi-kung master a sample booklet about Quan Yin meditation with the title "The Key of Immediate Enlightenment". Not being able to convince the wife, the master went home with the sample booklet in hand. At home, he left the book in the corner of the house.

One day a patient came to his office, but he couldn't heal her because she was so depressed about her son's recent death. The chi -kung master had no way to relieve her depression and so he gave her the sample booklet to read. He hoped that by keeping her busy with the booklet, she would be distracted from her own sorrows for a while. Little did he know that the benefits of the sample booklet were much greater than that.

A few days later, this patient came back to return the booklet. She told the chi-kung master that she was very excited about visiting the local center the next day to learn more about Quan Yin meditation. She had felt peace and consolation after having read the words in the sample booklet. The chi-kung master was very surprised that the words in the sample booklet had more power than his chi. The booklet could relieve his patient's depression when he couldn't.

After his patient went home, he was curious about the sample booklet. As he opened the booklet, he detected a fragrant aroma emanating from it. So he started reading and couldn't stop. After finishing, he called his patient and asked her if he could join her on her visit to the local center. They arrived early the next morning at the local center. Immediately, he signed up to learn the Convenient Method. He also bought the set of books, "The Key of Immediate Enlightenment". He then went home and read the books day and night without sleeping, and had many inner experiences while reading the books, which made him very happy and surprised. He could smell the fragrance and feel the energy around him while he read.

One week later he was approved by Master Ching Hai to learn the Convenient Method, and soon found out how powerful even the Convenient Method is. He could gather the equivalent amount of energy from only half an hour of practicing the Convenient that he could from six hours of practicing chi-kung. He couldn't express his happiness when many times he saw a big bright light in front of his wisdom eye and heard beautiful sounds all around him. As soon as he closed his eyes, he was in deep samadhi. He read in the book about the tremendous blessings received from looking into the eyes of a living Master. He longed to meet Master Ching Hai so that he could look deeply into Her eyes. As he closed the book, he saw Master's picture on the cover, and so he just looked into the eyes of the Her picture. Surprisingly, another spiritual experience occurred. He received the light and a warm blessing straight from the eyes of Master Ching Hai.

He later went to the local Center to ask for more sample booklets, and told his patients that he was going to close his healing office. Then he gave the sample booklets to all his patients and advised them to hurry and find Suma Ching Hai because She is really a Supreme Master and a Master of masters. He understood that to heal people from the root is to help them meet a living Master so that they can be liberated from the Maya world and break out of the circle of reincarnation. He knew that his success in healing people had built up his ego and prevented him from advancing his spiritual level. The chi-kung master is now very humble and cannot wait for initiation. He plans to close his healing office in a few weeks and live very simply, allowing more time for meditation. The chi-kung master plans to meditate many hours a day after receiving initiation, and is very happy that he has finally found a True Master.

In the afternoon, the sun seemed to be idly making its rounds. Dear brothers were dragging themselves around in highest "devotion," like poker-faced reincarnated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas, trying to digest the karma of having eaten too much. All of a sudden, the rallying sounds rang among the tranquil mountains, "Meet at the usual place. Time for watching movies." A brother passed the message from one side of the mountain to the other, for fear that he would miss any ill-fated Bodhisattvas and incur heavy karma for this. (We can never thank him enough for his kindness.)

Magical changes transformed these ascetic arhats' faces, make engouh to icebergs melt and spring flowers blossom. Suddenly, our muscles were not sore and our backs did not hurt anymore. Everyone rushed to the destination in lightning speed, where milk tea and blessed food gladly awaited our presence. "Master, I love you so much!" Everyone appeared composed and quiet on the outside, but inside their hearts were beating faster than ever, anticipating -- "What will we be watching today?"

Having received our disorganized thought waves, Master would sometimes deliberately keep us waiting by telling the attendants to have us meditate for a while first. Then we would learn that we had been too noisy. Concentrating within seriously like a Buddha statue, we prayed to God, "Sorry, Master. We know we have been too noisy, but...please. We really want to watch the movies." Who else could know the disciples better than Master? Walking in brisk footsteps, Master would finally appear. (To be honest, the moment we saw Master, all thoughts of thoughts disappeared.) "It was time to develop our observing ability." Which one should we watch first?" Our democratic Master always left the decision to us. First we give a show of hands, like gentlemen. But when it came to the point of indecision, we had to resort to "force". The two sides would send out their top fighters _ "Paper, scissors and stone!" Well, in every game there are winners and losers, and we just had to accept our destiny as it camd. "Camera!" Roll'em!

Judge "Bau-Kong's" Teacher

Occasionally, X-rated scenes would turn up on the movie screen, and Master would promptly tell the video person to fast-forward the video. In the meantime, She would crack a joke by saying, "Just to protect the little kids." She would also remind us to recite the Holy Names. Master watched movies with us. She told us that watching a movie was not just for fun or sensual pleasure as it might be for other people. As long as we observe attentively, we can learn a lot. When our attention was led astray, Master would re-direct it to where it should be, and highlight the solemn moral of the story. When watching films on life, Master would not praise the good guys or criticize the bad guys simply according to the plots as we usually did. She would analyze how it was the environment that turned an otherwise benign person into an outlaw. With Master's enlightened comments, many unresolved ancient mysteries came to light, and justice was done. She could have been the teacher of judge "Bau-Kong's" teacher.

At times when we asked for one video after another, Master would occasionally stay up late "unraveling the mysteries" with us until we had had enough. It really worked! After that, no one dared suggest watching videos _ only for a while.

Master knew very well what the children brought up in this world are fond of. She wouldn't spoil or prohibit us, but watch movies with us. Even though there was so much paperwork from Centers all over the world that She had to take care of and there were always trivial things that She had to deal with, the loving Master Mommy still made time for us children and accompanied us in our leisure time, using entertainment as a form of education. Oh, what bliss to have such a modern Mom.

Even if our enlightenment is limited, when put into use, it's better than waiting for the big Tao/Truth. So apply whatever you can digest, don't be in a hurry to do miraculous things, see magical things and understand the magical worlds. Do it step by step, no rush. When you learned the ABCs as a child, you just had to learn them well. Then the teacher taught you some sentences, and you digested these sentences, didn't you? Now you know how to learn and how to read. So take your time. How can it be that you are just in kindergarten and you can read "The Story of the Three Realms"? And you blame your teacher for not letting you read it. You can't expect to read a book or sutra when you first go to school or after just a few days. You can't just have expectations and blame the teacher when you haven't learned the little that you have been taught.

There's a movie, perhaps you have seen it, called "Karate Kid". It's about an American boy who learned karate. Only after he was beaten up, did he go to the old man. He accepted the boy, since the boy was beaten up too many times by some other karate groups. However, before teaching the boy anything, he had him promise that he would listen to whatever he said, do whatever he taught him to do, and learn well. The boy promised. Then, what was the boy asked to do? Wash and wax cars and floors, clean and paint walls, for many days. Even though he had sore muscles, he couldn't take a break. Finally, the boy couldn't stand it anymore, and complained, "I came for karate, but you teach me nothing!"

He was so eager to learn karate to avenge and protect himself, that he thought his teacher was teaching him nothing. It looked like he wasn't learning karate. He complained he was being used and treated as a worker and a slave... He felt he had been tricked and criticized his teacher a lot. So, the teacher asked him: "How do you wipe the car?" He told the boy to pretend he was wiping the car, and the boy bent down and began to wipe the car in the air. The teacher said, "No, it's okay to stand and wipe. Just keep doing that movement." Then his teacher attacked him, and the boy used that very movement to block him. He was able to do it. Then the teacher told him to "wipe the walls with both hands," and he attacked him again. The boy blocked the punch again while he was "wiping the walls". The teacher kept attacking him, but he kept blocking the attack by moving in the same way as he did his daily work. The things his teacher told him to do were not just ordinary tasks, but had been transformed into kung fu moves. For example, if we just wipe randomly, that would be different. His movements were techniques. He said to wipe from here to there; from there, down; then, left; then, right like this. These were all kung fu movements.

Usually, one would be practicing the same movements in the studio. It's better to use them all the time. He had taught the boy only two months and he became proficient in kung fu. So he had to apply the techniques in his daily chores. Otherwise, just by practicing two-and-a-half hours a day for two months, one couldn't compare with those who've practiced for years -- especially when the boy had never practiced kung fu before. He was just an ordinary boy, and within two months he was trained and became the best in the United States. This was because his teacher told him to use the moves in his daily work, such as scrubbing the floor. So everything he did became kung fu practice. In this way, he learned all the techniques very well in just two months.

Similarly, sometimes a Master teaches us something, and doesn't let us know that we're being taught. If a Master announces, "I'm teaching you," it would be too lousy. His life is his teaching. His speech and deeds are all there to teach us. He has this quality naturally. Therefore, if we're waiting, expecting some magic or wonders to occur, we'll be further away from our goal; we'll be looking too far beyond. So, I've told you that you'll be able to observe and gain enlightenment from various aspects in your daily work.

In ancient Rome, if you broke the law or you opposed the government, you would be thrown inside a lions' cage. It was recorded in the Bible that a man called Daniel was thrown into a lions' cage by the king. It turned out that the lions, though very hungry, did not eat him. So he became very famous. The king respected him very much and was initiated by him to practice spiritually!

There was another story that happened about the same time. A person who opposed the government was thrown into a lions' cage. However, whenever a lion went near him, it left him in a few seconds and went to a spot far away, with its mouth watering, making a slurping sound. Even though its mouth was watering, it did not dare eat him. The first lion, the second, to the sixth one, all did the same thing. They all approached him but left after a few seconds! They dept a distance from him, where they stared at him, with their mouth watering and their tongues hanging out, but none of them dared to eat him.

The king was also very surprised to see that no lion would eat him. Eventually the king let him out and asked him, "What is your secret that the lions would not dare eat you? Who are you?"

He replied, "I am no one special!"

"Why was it that whenever the lions approached you, they left and stayed away from you, but with their mouths watering? What actually happened?"

He said, "Ah! It was nothing really! Whenever they came near, I secretly said in their ears, 'My eldest son is the manager of an animal protection organization.' Then they left me." (Master and audience laugh.) Now you know. When you bump into a lion, you should say that my Master, my boss is the general manager in charge of animal protection! Then they will not eat you! (Laughter)

When a fellow practitioner went to heaven, oh no! when he went to hell, (Master and audience laugh) he was not liberated; so he stopped practicing! The ghost guard in hell asked him, "You look rather like a good man. The Five Precepts are written on your forehead. Why is it that you are here in hell?"

He said, "Ah! If my wife hadn't passed away so early, I would not have ended up this way!" (Master and audience laugh.)

The ghost asked him why was that, and he said, "When my wife was alive, she meditated and kept the precepts for me (Master and audience laugh). It was because she died too early that there was no one to meditate and keep the precepts for me. So later on I became like this."

Mindful of fertilizers and other pesticides used in too large quantities! For Sting, there is now a future - His five children. He composes songs for them and hopes to convey to them his conception of a balanced mind resulting from a perfectly harmonious life. Also regarding this "ecolo" star _ please remember his commitment to the Amazon forest and Indians _ we should proselytize. That is, let's have the courage to advertise for the most noble ideals.

Some time ago I was lucky enough to be able to follow Master's invitation to Hsihu Center to join a retreat and stay a little longer. Two sleepless nights because of the long journey, the time difference and the hot and damp climate, which I was not accustomed to, gave me quite a hard time. The first evening, Master spoiled us with a barbecue-party and an invitation of the "Westerners" to come to Her "kitchen". But whatever good happened, I could not help the feeling that Master was not aware of me and did not love me. She seemed to throw glances, words, sweets and fruits to everyone but me. I felt so helpless and ungrateful and unable to enjoy Her presence, that I did not like myself and didn't want to disturb Master with my confusion.

Then, amidst my worries, She came to help me with a precious gift. I was meditating on the sound when I realized that I could hear an unusually clear and beautiful sound. I switched to meditating on the light, but realized at once that the sound did not disappear but became even louder. I could not tell if it came from the outside and filled me or came from me and filled the whole environment. It was of an unknown melody, depth and beauty; and seemed to be carrying and swaying me. Next to my meditation place the kitchen was being renovated, but even the most shrilling drill, saw and hammering could not disturb my terrific sound experience. I was determined to allow only Master to stop that cheering feeling. So I sat about one hour and was swayed and comforted and elevated by the inner sound until She came to lecture.

Ever since this event, I felt changed. The question of whether Master is aware of my presence or not did not arise anymore, because I was so happy and grateful to see and hear Her. My strange thoughts before, about how I should be and what I should do to be "right," disappeared. I just did what came to me -- a little gardening, washing rice pots and translating -- and enjoyed the daily presence of a loving and most beautiful Master, the peaceful paradise-like atmosphere, delicious food and exotic fruits.

Now that I do not worry anymore, I can experience the miracle of truly realizing Master and Her love.

Q: I heard on some of Your tapes that you recommend not mixing practices. Perhaps You can clarify for us what You intended by that.

M: Only when it has anything to do with the breath control. That's all. Otherwise there is not much there. For example, there are many kinds of meditation. So, there are some kinds of so-called meditation. People say anything is meditation, so we are confused. But actually there are different types. There is a kind of mantra practice; they recite something. People also call that meditation, so that's confusing. People tell you to pay attention to your breathing _ you breathe in and breathe out. On that they also call meditation. Some people say you have to pay attention to the solar plexus, abdomen, here all the time that they also call meditation. Fine, nothing wrong with that. But we abuse the word "meditation" too much and confuse the people; because otherwise, I would say that everyone meditates anyhow. I said this morning when some of the ladies said, "We are not used to meditation. We don't know what's meditation, and you tell us to meditate" _ you know when I was interviewed on TV this morning. I said "Yes, you meditate all the time; some people meditate on money, some people meditate on girls, some people meditate on drugs when they don't have enough of them." That's their meditation. When you pay attention to something in a very extravagant degree, that is when you meditate.

Therefore I said to you, be concentrated, be one-pointed with my teachings. That's why you get the best results. If you meditate on my teachings and meditated on money at the same time or meditate on mantra at the same time, of course you are divided and that's very logical. I am not a dictator. I just tell you what's good for you. Whatever you want to do, you have to pay all your attention to that point. Whether you meditate, you fix the car, or you drive a taxi, if you don't pay attention to your driving, you will get into trouble.

That's very simple. And people think I am forbidding you this and that. No, everything I tell you is just good advice as a duty of a teacher. Whatever you know, you have to tell them. Of course, you make the choice. If you don't follow me, it's okay. You are responsible for your actions, the success of your meditational practice. But I am responsible to tell you what is good for you. So don't misunderstand that it's a kind of prohibiting, or dictating. No, no, nothing. Everything I tell you is an age-old essence of a practitioner who wants to get away from all the traps of this materialism and to rise above this mind-matter controlling power, so that he can realize there is something greater than his own body and his own machine, brain, computer.

That's it. So all these are kind of secret codes, secret methods to speed yourself on the highway of spirituality. There is nothing dictating about that. Because if you don't do it, I never say anything to you. I never scold you. I never ring you and say, "Hey, you didn't do it." Or I never check up on it. It's all your choice. The path of freedom is a path of responsibility, self-responsibility. So I never impose anything. Just suggest, just to tell you, "This is a good way. If you do it, you surely will get that. If you don't, okay, you'll get half or maybe three quarters."

This amply implies that, though one person may look similar to another, if he seeks inwardly and gets enlightenment, he will discover the glorious nature of his original Self. A person who looks simple and pure outside, could be rich, noble and glorious within.

From the view of an ordinary human being, it is difficult to understand the intent of an enlightened Master in doing things. However, for those who truly feel it and are deeply moved, the casual designs of an enlightened Master are a valuable reminder.
