Long before entering Tibet, many arrangements,
including transportation, meals and accommodation,
had already invisibly been made by Master. She even arranged
a fellow initiate who is familiar with Tibet to accompany me,
which made the trip a smooth one.
I deeply believe that as long as we wait patiently,
Master will definitely fulfill everyone's wishes for anything that can be of
help, spiritually or otherwise, to them.

Master Guided Us All The Way

It is over one hundred kilometers from Jiang-tuen to Lake Yang-cho-yung, with no public transportation available. In the summer there are more tourists. In the winter hardly anyone goes through there because of the difficult mountain paths, with a seven thousand meters canyon en route. Although it was very expensive to rent a car, one could not rent one at that time. Throughout the day there might be an occasional truck from the Food Bureau or the post office passing through. I believed that as long as Master wanted us to go, we would find a car. After waiting all morning, a small vehicle actually came along, and we arrived Lake Yang-cho-yung smoothly. Under Master's great almighty orchestration, miraculous situations like that, when the seemingly impossible turned to be possible, happened quite a few times!

Lake Yang-cho-yung is one of the three great holy lakes in Tibet. Legend has it that it was transformed by a goddess who descended from heaven. The lake water is an extraordinary blue color, and is surrounded by high snow-capped mountains. It is unbelievably beautiful! When we got there, we met someone longing for eternal liberation. After he learned the Convenient Method, his whole consciousness was elevated by Master, and he felt extremely comfortable, an experience that he never had before. So he began to keep a vegetarian diet, in preparation for initiation.

Danger Avoided With Master's Warning

Throughout the journey, I deeply appreciated that I could not go wrong surrendering myself to Master's arrangements. Wherever She wants you to go, you will reap good results when you get there. If there is somewhere that She does not want you to go, you should take heed and not go.

Like at first we wanted to visit Chang-mu (near Milarepa's cave) to establish an affinity with the people there. It is a small, newly developed town close to Nepal. However, I received Master's hint at night that we should not go, because there would be difficulties if we did. So we canceled that stop. A few days later we learned that there was heavy snow fall in Chang-mu, collapsing many roads. It would not have been easy for us to get out if we had gone. We are truly grateful for Master's advance warning!

The Tibetans are very simple, kindhearted people. They are helpful and willing to befriend you. All of those who learned the Convenient Method had very good experiences. An anie (a female lama) had a vision of Master's transformation form explaining the Five Precepts to her in Tibetan. The others who practiced the Convenient Method said that they felt very comfortable. One of them said his consciousness was going so quickly that there was not time "to put the brakes on".

The road condition of our return journey, which required several days by car, were not very good. As our truck went along the beautiful Nu River, we could see pieces after pieces of ice that looked like blooming flowers drifting on the surface of the water. We sang as we happily went along, admiring the scenery. Even the driver joined us and sang some Tibetan songs. Despite a blown tire on several occasions during this part of our journey, with Master's protection, we arrived safely at our destination. Here many people (mostly Tibetans) who had affinity began to practice the Convenient Method.

The Tibetans are very fond of Master's sample booklet. As soon as they received it, they would touch their foreheads with it. When they were not reading it, they would place the books on their altar. I believe that when the time is ripe, Master's teachings will definitely spread far and wide among these simple, pure and contented children of God. Chasiederla! (This is the usual Tibetan greeting, meaning an auspicious and favorable future.)

Aphorisms By Supreme Master Ching Hai (Originally In English)

We should practice for the sake of wisdom alone; for the sake of knowing ourselves; for the sake of knowing the origin of our home; and to be free, loving and happy. That's all there is.

Prayers begin after you have met a master, because the master awakens in you the prayer power -- the power to pray, the power to think, the power to use your own energy to make things come true.

If we know where to use our Universal Power, then we will become masters of ourselves, masters of our destinies, and we can lead many others to become masters of their own destinies as well.

Practice depends on merits, diligence and wisdom. It does not depend on the outside.

The purposes of our spiritual practice are to open our wisdom, help all sentient beings, and uplift the power and civilization of the world.

The world is in need of such fast working people. It is so desperately short of these fast thinking, intelligent, conscientious, moral and honest people. Therefore, the more the better.

The future is in our hands really. There are no aliens who can do anything about it. There is no God who punishes us. There is no enlightened being who blesses us. It's only ourselves. We have to make a choice, because that's how we grow -- by making a good choice.

Forsake everything and then you will have everything.

We should live with each other in love and don't mind the karma.

Anyone who is not able to impart you immediate light or sound is not a real master.

We must always be open and accepting, then we will find our life is terrific, is completely in harmony and beautiful, and is a blessing everyday, twenty-four hours.

Turn Inward And Listen To The Heavenly Teachings

I had the opportunity to speak to some of the people who live in this land - the immigrants - for example, the Au Lac refugees who have been welcomed into your country with love and nondiscrimination. They're all very happy in this country. I am sure this will add more merits and blessings to this great nation that you happen to reside in. Only a very spiritually elevated country can possess such qualities of loving kindness, of non-racism, nondiscrimination. If every nation was like this, at least our world would become a small paradise.

We Are God

Unfortunately, there are many other things that prevent people from understanding the basic truth - that is love is the greatest law in the universe; and therefore, many people do not enjoy life the way they should.

The more we cling to life in a forceful way, the less we can enjoy the flavor of it. Therefore, the enlightened persons are happier and more contented. Even then, from this very stable state of mind, they can do many wonders because they are quiet enough to understand where their wisdom lies, where their greatness is, in order to make use of it.

When we are very busy, are in a panic, or in a hurry, most often we forget what we want to do. Or we do things in an incomplete way. Therefore, the tranquil mind of an enlightened person can see things more clearly. That's the only logic of this science.

Be still and know that I am God. Who is that "I am"? That is the "one" that resides within us. That is the true "self". Therefore, we are God. This realization doesn't come through hearing people saying that or through believing alone, but through self realization. Just as in any other science there must be a special technique.

Everything we learn and master in life is all done through self experimentation. Similarly, enlightenment can be achieved through some perseverance, self experience. Therefore, it will be lasting. That's the reason why we have heard a lot of saints and sages of all times saying that, we are God. God is within us. If God is within us, that means we and God are one. If we and God are one, we are God. But even then, we have heard this so often, we have read so many bibles and so many statements from such great men, like Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, etcetera; but we do not truly believe that we are this, and we cannot find the God that is supposed to dwell within ourselves. It is because we lack self experience; we have not known it by our own discovery, but only by hearing.

In the old times, when science had not reached the heights of today, we had many problems. Even the rain troubled us, the snow bothered us. Anything, any small things, big things, obstructed our daily activities. For example, now we have umbrellas, we have raincoats, so we can walk in the rain. We can even enjoy the rain and work in the rain. Better still we have cars, we have buses. We have all the things that protect us from the different weather changes in nature. Therefore we are very comfortable.

In the ancient times, if we were to hold a meeting like today, many of you who live at a very, very long distance away would not be here. Not because of the distance only, but because of rain, because of weather, and all that. So in the ancient times people hid themselves in caves, in mountains, under the trees, to protect themselves from natural disadvantages. Many people still do today, in some of the undeveloped countries. So that must not be.

Enlightenment is like that. It's just like we add more comforts into our life, and be happy in whatever condition. Suppose we don't have a raincoat, we don't have an umbrella, we don't have a car; if it rains today, we are stopped from doing all of our activities, from all the things that we love to do, and want to accomplish.

To Change The World, Change Yourselves

Similarly, life is fantastic if we have enlightenment. There is nothing in this life which could be called "suffering," "terror" or "trouble". Only because we lack protection that it seems to be so; because, take the example, the rain. If it doesn't rain, we don't have water and all the trees, the flowers cannot grow. All the crops that we need for survival would never be there. Therefore, rain is not terrible in itself. But it is if we don't have an umbrella, and we walk miles in the cold. We will shiver, we will catch cold, we will be ill, and we may lose our life even through it is such a very harmless and useful natural phenomenon. Even a very natural, beautiful phenomenon becomes harmful to us, if we lack equipment to protect ourselves.

Therefore, many people want to change the world. To change the way we live our lives. But the sages of enlightened spirits say: "No! Change yourselves," because if we change ourselves, we change the world around us. Even if the world still stays the way it is, we are not affected. If each person changes in this way, there would be no need for any wars and there would be no disasters. If everyone had an umbrella, a raincoat, what is the need to change the season, to stop the rain, or to make magical power to control the rainy season, like many people would like to learn and possess this magical power? It can stop the rain, can make it last longer, can push it to another direction. And it takes a long time to learn this magical skill. But why bother? We just wear the raincoat - it's cheap, it's simple, and everyone can use it.

Once the Buddha wanted to cross the river by boat, and the boatman did not want to take him because he had no money. At that time he was, of course, a renunciative monk still, who possessed no property, so the Buddha had no choice but to walk over the river. These days, quite a few yogis in India, Tibet and elsewhere still can do that.

Many people ask me about magical power because people are curious about things that they can't explain, and also about things that they scientifically think "are impossible". So I told them, "Yes! These things do exist. But nevertheless, they are not to be used at random, and also not to be done for show."

Even Jesus, He possessed a lot of magical power, but He didn't always use it. He was very reluctant. Therefore, He raised only one dead person to life. He cured only two or three blind persons, and did not run around all the time and raise all the dead back to life. That will bring the natural law into a chaotic situation. That is a thing an enlightened saint would not do.

Each one has to learn to yearn within his heart to know himself, to know God; and then the Kingdom of God will come, the Master will come to help that person. If we use magical power, or any other supernatural ways to convince people, we unknowingly lead people astray; because, we limit God's power within these magical skills, which could be learned by some experts. Also, by doing that, we interfere with the flow of nature. And of course, we bring some disasters upon ourselves. What we seek are the eternal things, like wisdom, love and the greatness of the universal power, not the small corner of these low level gains.

Greatest Miraculous Power Do Without Doing

When we possess the great wisdom, we also possess numerous miraculous powers. But at that time, we have so much, too much, that we might not even know how much we have, and things just come out from us automatically without us intentionally doing anything. That's why the saints do things without doing, without even thinking, without even wanting to do it. It's just like a very, very rich person, he has no idea how much he has. He can never count. He can never see all of his treasure.

Therefore, the enlightened persons are always happy. At least most of the time they are happy. And even when he encounters unhappiness, which is brought to him by his very close contact with someone he loved, maybe, then he is affected. Because of the love for that person, he may share the sufferings or unhappiness of that person. But even then, he is very, very calm inside. He knows that the unhappiness is only of an ephemeral nature. He is not, kind of dragged and sunken into this unhappiness, like most of the people are. Therefore, if we even want just to be happy in this life, we should get enlightenment.

Of course, I should tell you that you have to seek God for God's sake alone, not because of the happiness in this life. But I do think that these things come together. If you are enlightened, you are happy. And the more happy, the more you believe in enlightenment, and the more you will appreciate God's nature anyhow. What is the use of expecting an everlasting happiness in heaven, while we grovel here in darkness and in misery every minute of our life?

An enlightened person enjoys both worlds; enjoys heaven at the same time as enjoying the world. Why? Because he knows that whatever is manifested in this world, is also the will of heaven. It's also a copy of the real manifestation in the higher Kingdom of God. Because he is very relaxed, has no fear, no anxiety, so whatever he enjoys, he enjoys it to the utmost.

Many people think that after enlightenment, maybe you don't know how to love your wife, your husband or children anymore. It is the opposite. Only when you are very happy, and know your true worth, can you truly love another person. Because you see her reflection is within you and your reflection is within her. You will respect that person and love all the good qualities that God has endowed that person, because you have realized what God has given in yourself. Then you know God gives all beings the same amount of qualities.

But we choose sometimes to go in the opposite direction. Therefore, we suffer; and then we blame God. We say how come God has such almighty power and cannot turn this world into heaven. The power doesn't lie in God's hands, it lies in your hands. I know all these through experiences, not through books, not through any bible. I know these also through the experiences in the life of my disciples. That is also the reason why we see each other today.

Sharing The Bliss Of Enlightenment

It is due to the kindness of my disciples. They want to share with you what they have discovered. So they have gone through a lot of trouble, expense and time to organize this day's congregation. We do not do this with a very burning ambition to convince you into our path. But we do it with a very happy attitude of just a happy person. Therefore, we don't care to wear very special renunciative dresses to impress you. We do not try to make a very holy appearance of ourselves to convert you. We do not try to give anything to you, or any other kind of magical power to let you come into our circle. But we do it as a duty of one brother to another. We just do it for the sake of doing it. Actually, we're happy whether you are convinced, or not. We will be contented whether you come, or you go. Because nothing is that deadly serious to us anymore. We do it or not do it, it is the same thing to us.

I could be sitting pretty on the top of a mountain in Formosa and enjoying my samadhi power, or I could be sitting here knowing more of the people of the Earth planet. It is the same to me. Therefore, if you feel that you're ready for this happiness, which is the true happiness because it comes from the root, because you know the whole thing from heaven to earth and hell. You know everything. And then you choose what you would like to enjoy. Therefore, your happiness will be true and lasting. Otherwise, most of the so called enjoyments in this world we are not free to choose.

Sometimes we are dragged along to a party and we try to enjoy it. Sometimes we are forced to get married because of some political or business reasons, and try to make the best out of it. Sometimes we drag along with a big family and try to feed them. Working from morning to night, we think that we are great because we are taking care of the family. But it's not always a choice. Therefore, we do not feel happy in many things we do; because, somehow, we feel that we are not the one who controls all this. We are not the host, we're just like a guest. We are blown with the wind, and we go along with whatever the situation is. We lose many interests and joys in life through not knowing why we are doing all this and that. But after enlightenment, it's different. Whatever we enjoy, we truly enjoy. We understand the values of life, as well as the values above this life.

There are two lives in any planet. One is of the material existence, the other is of an everlasting nature. If we know only one and we lack the other, just like most people in the world -- they enjoy only the material existence of so called life but they do not know the real picture of this projection; they know only the shadows. So they only enjoy the material life, and fear losing it. But the truly enlightened person knows both - the everlasting and also the copy of it; and he can enjoy both at the same time, he can choose to enjoy one or the other. But I think that while we are already here, we might just as well enjoy. There is nothing in this world that we should not enjoy, really. Except those things that are harmful to the lives of other beings.

Therefore, we just suggest a vegetarian diet, so the fish can always swim in the sea as much as they please and the cows can graze in the pasture until nature causes them to go back to where they belong. We can enjoy them, and they can enjoy us.

Some of the enlightened persons, I don't know how, to which degree, but they choose to live in the inside, on the other side of life, the spiritual side of life. And therefore, give the impression to the people that all the enlightened persons have to be like that - have to go into the Himalayas, have to go into the cave, have to forsake all the beautiful things about this life in order to be an enlightened being.

But that must not be so because we will be too aloof from this world and many people will find it difficult to associate with us. If they find it too difficult to associate with us, how can they help themselves? How can they know what we know? Of course, it may be more pleasant for a saint or an enlightened person to stay away from the hustle, bustle of the world and to be carefree in his or her own way. But on the other hand, there are many other brothers and sisters who need our assistance.

Stay In World But Remain Above It

Everything in this world is of some use and if an enlightened sage becomes a useless being, then it is a waste of natures product. Therefore, we should just stay in the world, but remain above it. We can have our house, our cars but we no longer are slaves to these possessions. If we have them, we enjoy them. If we don't have them, we just don't. It's a very simple life.

Therefore the things in this world, we will enjoy if they are there. If they are not there, it makes no difference to us. That is the way of the enlightened spirit. Not that we have to run away from the material existence, but we remain above it. I think that is more practical for most of the people on this planet because we are in the material surrounding, we are in the material existence. Wait until we leave this physical world, then we can enjoy completely the spiritual atmosphere of the real life. So why be in a hurry?

If everyone gets enlightenment, and runs into the Himalayas to stay there forever, soon we would have no more enlightened persons left. And the others would never know of enlightenment, because everyone is gone. No connection. No message. No example. No one to walk beside us who shares with us all the ups and downs of this world, who encourages us to walk in life as an angel, as God.

In the olden days, it was very difficult to know where the Master was, and who the enlightened person was. People had to climb mountains, to cross the sea under a lot of hardship and trouble in order to find an enlightened person. Thus, our world did not developed in the ancient times. People lived in poverty, lacking of a lot of comforts.

So I think that it's not very ideal. I think the enlightened person must live in this world; must do whatever he has to do; must take care of whomever God places in his hands, and be happy, be enlightened. Because even if you run away into the forest, we can't run away from the universe. We are still in here, where can we run away to?

Many people think that an enlightened person must have a very special appearance. Maybe a very long beard. I happen not to have one. But today with technological advancements, I think I could grow a beard even. Like some chemical stuff? Or maybe an enlightened person has to just stay in the Himalayas. There are maybe some enlightened persons who stay in the Himalayas, but it must not be that all of them doing so.

I don't want to cite bibles or scriptures anymore; otherwise, I will be in trouble. I'll just talk about what I know; forget about the scriptures. I was going to cite a Buddhist's scripture for you, but I thought, I had better not. The less you know, the better, (laughter) the more simple. Then you don't add more complicated, intellectual nonsense into your brain. Because the Bible cannot enlighten us. The menu cannot satisfy our hunger. What we need is the direct teaching.

Turn Inward And Listen To Heavenly Teachings

There are two kinds of teachings. One is the theoretical doctrine -- which comes from the Masters while the Masters are still alive, which is to teach his disciples about how to behave in the society. That is just for the mind and just to suit the customs and the laws of that nation at that particular period of time. Also to correct some bad habits of the disciples, and to guide them in many aspects in life, like in politics, business, marriage and things like that. But these are all worldly; all within the level of material existence. There is another teaching which is the real one, the original, the lasting. This teaching is nonverbal. And that can be done through what we call "thought transference," when the disciples turn inward and listen to the teachings from heaven.

At the time of initiation, we will tell you how to do that; not because we tell you that you can do so, but because you are ready for it. The Master's power will 'switch' on the 'button' for your age-old wisdom, which has laid dormant within yourselves life after life, until now. Just like we switch on the light, all the darkness will disappear instantly. That is the immediate enlightenment process. That is very possible for everyone who is sincere, and who wants to know how great he is, how he connects with the whole universe, how God dwells within himself -- which he didn't know all this time. Then everything else in life will take care of itself. Truly!

I asked all of my disciples; none of them said that they are not happier than before; that they are not more contented than before; that they are not more intelligent than before; that they are not more capable, more powerful than before. Even just a few weeks afterwards, or even a few days afterwards; it depends on the person, depends on how receptive that person is. Just even after initiation, just a few minutes. Even within the initiation, you know you've changed forever, and you have accelerated. You are no longer within human standards, but you enter the circle of sainthood without changing any appearance; without running away to anywhere; without doing anything dramatic in your life. Just be where we are and enjoy both worlds. Enjoy the real, as well as the ephemeral nature of the projection of the real life. That's what we have discovered, that's what we continue to discover, and that's what we'd like to share with you. (Applause)

Questions & Answers

Q: What do You think should be done about hatred, violence in everyday life, for example, prejudice, or racial discrimination? Or how can we get the message to those who don't want to listen?

M: I think all these phenomena are the result of a non-enlightened mind. If we are enlightened, everything is solved without having to speak with each other, without having to preach at all. So actually, all these things like anger, hatred, greed and all that, come from the lack of enlightenment in that person. Because he is so dissatisfied with what he has in life, so discontented within the framework of his life, it becomes natural that he is agitated, he is aggressive, he is angry, he is greedy for more, because he thinks these things will satisfy him more and make him happier.

Actually the deep root of all this is the yearning for a happier state of life. That is the deep yearning for enlightenment. Therefore, if we want to cure all these illnesses, we have to introduce enlightenment into people's lives and make them happy.

Q: Why has my ego risen?

M: How do I know? It's your business. (Laughter) Perhaps no one ever scolded you, perhaps your position was raised in the society, perhaps you're too successful in your business, perhaps your wife or your husband spoils you too much.

A Truly Enlightened Person

Q: I wish to be enlightened. Why should I bother about staying in the society?

M: Why not? It's your choice, of course, but why bother to choose? Because we were born in this society, we owe a lot to society, to survive, to grow up, to enjoy all the comforts that we have now. Therefore, it's also okay to stay in the society to repay some of this kindness; just to be present, just to be one of the whole, and non-discriminating: "whether I am enlightened, or he is not enlightened. I am an enlightened person, I don't mix with unenlightened people," and these kinds of things.

When the person turns inward all the time, he doesn't mind who's around him. He doesn't even know that he is in the society or out of society. He's just himself, and does what must be done at that moment. Always in the present. That is the true enlightened person.

Q: Is it possible to become awakened without a spiritual guide?

M: Yes, very much possible. But without guidance, you probably cannot go very far. You see, to be awakened and to be completely awakened are two different things. So when a Master who has already travelled from the material existence to the highest awakened stage can guide you, it's best - faster and safer!

Q: How through this enlightenment or initiation, can we bring all people and all living beings to supreme enlightenment, and destroy all negative things and sufferings?

M: We cannot bring all beings into the state of supreme enlightenment because we are enlightened. But to us, to ourselves, the enlightened person, all the beings, all the sufferings disappear. That's the most important.

When you are enlightened, when you are in the state of samadhi there are no beings, no sufferings, nothing exists. When you come out of the enlightenment, if you wish to come out of the samadhi state, you wish to come into contact with those who are not enlightened and who see things as suffering. So you try to help them. Whomever likes to know your state of non-suffering, they can come. If they do not, it's fine. They have to learn their lessons. You can't force all of the children in your family to become a professor of the university just because you are one. But you can guide them step by step, until they become grown up and educated enough to be like you.

Q: How can I get rid of the fear of death?

M: Oh! I die everyday. There is no need to fear when we know death is just like stepping from one room to the next. It's quicker than that. I could just sit here and die, but you wouldn't know it. Very fast. A step from one plane of existence to the next. That is the process of so called death. It can be done in a second. So there is nothing to fear. If you fear death, come to me. I will teach you how to die everyday. (Applause and laughter.) You'll get used to it. Just like when you first drove a car, you didn't know how to drive. So you were very afraid. If you drive it everyday, you get used to it.

Positiveness

Q: According to You, what is positiveness, or what is being positive?

M: I understand. It's just probably a kind of attitude of some people; they try to hypnotize themselves into thinking that everything is great, everything is possible in life. But thinking alone helps only very little. If we know the root of all the problems by shining the torch of enlightenment on all corners of life, we tackle problems better; not in a positive way, but in a right way - be it positive or negative. If we are only positive, we neglect another part of life which is very important. It's just like you only choose men, and you don't care about women. Can we do that? No! We can't. So, an enlightened person knows how to handle positive and negative; not to reject anything, but to make all things fully useful for life and the life after. I don't preach extreme things.

Q: What do You think about the future for our youth? Do You feel or have a lot of faith in our future generations?

M: Our future will be very good. More people are enlightened these days than during the time of Jesus or Buddha, or any other period on our Earth planet. So I think our future will be very bright. It's already getting brighter. The political situation of the world is already very hopeful. Many of the great arch enemy nations are shaking hands with each other, and want to talk about peace and economic resurrection. So we should feel positive.

Q: How can we earn our living without depriving others of chances of earning their own living? For example, if I don't have a job, someone else will have it, and be happy. If I don't cut a tree to make a living, that tree will feed numerous different beings.

M: You have a job because God gives you that job. Even if you are out of that job, no one can take that job, if it was not meant for them. So do not feel guilty. Whatever you get, you get it. It's just if we try to compete with other people, try to put that person down, try to do many tricks in order to trick him out of the position, and then we replace him, that is a different thing. But if we get it naturally in the competitive society - first come first serve. If the other person wanted that position, he should be as fast as you, or as capable as you.

About cutting trees: you can cut that tree and plant ten more. So don't worry about that. Just plant more trees. We respect nature but we do not become slaves to nature. The trees are there to serve us in different ways. It may give us shade when the shade is necessary. It may give strength to the house, if a pole in the room is needed. It may give warmth to your house, if you need wood for a fire. So don't worry about cutting trees if it's allowed, if it's abundant in your country. You have to look into the situation, not always become nature worshippers, because human values are the topmost. If you cut all the trees, and do not plant new ones, of course it's no good. But if you cut one tree, plant ten or twenty, what is the harm? We cannot be fanatics. We have to be flexible in different situations.

Q: Is it we who decide whether to become an angel or a devil?

M: Yes, sure. But also circumstances. If we are not strong enough to withstand the temptation of life, then of course we fall into the other side of nature, which is negative. When we are strong enough, we stay in the middle, we can have both positive and negative at our disposal. That is the way of the enlightened person.

The Samadhi State Of An Enlightened Master

Q: How can we reach a permanent state of samadhi?

M: Samadhi - there are many kinds, of course. There are some kinds that are very short-lived, that you get at the beginning of your practice, after initiation. There are some kinds of long lasting samadhi which sometimes last for hours or days, after some time of practice. Other kinds of samadhi are very ordinary, just like you will have it for twenty-four hours while you are working in this world. That is the samadhi state of a Master. Then a Master looks like a very ordinary sentient being but the wisdom is very obvious, and the blessing and the power is very transparent.

Q: For the Christians, God's love is fundamental for union with Him. This ingredient, is it enough to save us?

M: It's only the imagination of the mind that we have faith in God, that we love God, that we are united with God. The real union, truly does take place, which is when you merge into Hiers glory. You see the light from heaven, you hear the Word of God, which is like, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

If we hear that Word through initiation, through meditation practice, then we can say we love God, we know God, and we are in union with God. Otherwise, all is imagination - all novelty, romance of the mind. We can imagine we have money, but we don't necessarily have it. That's the difference.

Hoping That The Public Will Give Them Warmth

The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association Launched An Activity
This Week To Care For The Homeless Citizens

Last Saturday, members of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association visited seventy-eight low income households in Taipei city and county, and ten persons under the care of the New Life Protection Society. Warm clothing and food were distributed. They also conducted a series of programs to entertain the seniors at the Hengan Home for the Aged.

Yesterday afternoon, the Association mobilized about four hundred disciples. They went to the usual gathering places of the homeless, as well as to made an extensive search for homeless citizens living in scattered areas. Besides giving them clothing, food and money, they also informed them that the Genesis Foundation has set up service stations to provide meal boxes, daily necessities and bathing facilities for them, and that there are safe living quarters available. The Association also visited about 270 low income households in Taipei, giving them food, cassette tapes and about 1,000 NT dollars each in cash.

Disciples Of Supreme Master Ching Hai Give Help To The Homeless Citizens

[Tang Su Xing reporting from Taipei] Yesterday, under Supreme Master Ching Hai's directive, about four hundred of Her disciples in the Taipei area divided into over eighty teams to looked for the homeless in every corner of the metropolitan area. Besides giving them red envelopes (lucky New Year's money), they also bought clothes and blankets for them.

According to the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in Taipei, under Supreme Master Ching Hai's guidance, they targeted yesterday's searching operation at the homeless citizens wandering on the streets. Those who are being taken care of by charity groups or government organization were not the objects of this visiting activity.

Furthermore, the Association has obtained cooperation from the Danxui General Hospital, Neihu General Hospital and the Neihu Lin De Chinese Hospital to work in conjunction with this street searching operation to provide medical services for homeless citizens who were sick and in need of help.

And Request The Public To Help Find Them

[By reporter Gong Wei-Jun from Taipei] Responding to the appeal of the merciful Supreme Master Ching Hai, Her disciples, after having visited the Heng An Home for the Aged last Saturday to convey spiritual and material support to the seniors, they plan to launch an activity of caring for the poor and unfortunate as well as homeless people on the tenth of this month. They requested the public's help in locating these people.

Recently, Supreme Master Ching Hai has instructed Her disciples around the world to try their best to visit and console the poor and unfortunate people to give them some practical New Year's gifts depending on their needs. Upon receiving the directive from the great Master, the disciples have started a series of compassionate activities.

Based on their experience in previous years and the relevant data, the disciples have mobilized many members to make an advance investigation of the destitute families. Although they have obtained some initial information regarding the location the homeless, they still need enthusiastic people to provide more information, because many of them have no fixed place, and are therefore hard to find.

Friend: "It's strange! I notice that I have very bad breath lately. I only realize now that meat eating people have bad breath."

Fellow initiate: "Is that so? I really don't know. I can not smell it."

Friend: "You can't smell it? I am talking to you and you can't smell it!"

Fellow initiate: "That's right! Of course I can't smell it. You are in Taipei, I am in Tainan, and we are talking on the phone. How can I smell it?"

Friend: "Yes! Yes! I forgot. Since I read the Master's book that you sent me, I began to notice my bad breath. I've decided to become a vegetarian, and try not to eat meat, because people who eat meat really have bad breath. Wait till I cleanse myself, I will go to the meditation center to see Master."

Reverend Master, You are so great. Sentient beings immediately have a response after reading Your books. You have to be an real enlightened Master to have such great powers! I am very grateful to You, God Master, for Your compassion.

I Have Never Seen Such A Lovely Enlightened Master!

Honorable Supreme Master Ching Hai,

Others call me a "writer". I don't like the term - it's too heavy for me. I am merely an "author" who once wrote a book. If someday, You allow me to visit You, I would like to give You a copy of my book, which is the story of my life and that of my family's in Beijing, the capital city of Mainland China.

What I would like to say today is, I have never known such a lovely spiritual path; I have never seen such a lovely enlightened Master; I have never heard such teachings - so profound, inspiring, uplifting, moral, and yet so simple to understand.

I feel I have a responsibility to promote You so that more people will know, understand, and follow You. You, represent a method of spiritual practice. You, Yourself, are even a shinning example. I especially adore Your beauty and dress-sense.

Religion is supposed to be a moral guide for people, and highlight the beauty of life. Why should religious adepts dress like witches and expect us to follow them - shaven heads, wearing dull or dark robes, and covering their faces? What kind of beautiful life is that?

Obviously, You must have been criticized because of Your ways. However, if You gave in, then You wouldn't be a real Master. In my opinion, Quan Yin Bodhisattva, Fairy Ho and Ru-Lai Buddha should look more like You. Such people would command more respect from me than those who dress as if they have just crawled out of a grave, because they definitely cannot inspire people's interest to learn.

I have lived in Germany for ten years and have become a naturalized citizen. I think You should come to lecture in Germany. I would like to join Your worldwide Association. I am eager to meet and interview You.

I am very much awaiting Your reply, and especially welcome You to come and stay in my home for a while. It would be my greatest honor!

I live in a beautiful city famous for tourism and education. This university city has a few hundred years of history. There is a seminary, housed in a large castle incorporating palatial architecture. Perhaps, You can talk to them, visit with them. There are over nine thousand students. I am positive they would be interested in Your spiritual path!

I also hope to receive information about Your International Association. When was it established? How many members are there? What are its principles? What has it achieved? Also, what are Your life's experiences, Your thoughts, etc.? Written in the form of an interview, it can be an introduction to those who know little about You. It definitely will attract many people just like me.

I never believed in the Buddha before, but I was immediately attracted to You! You made me surrender immediately and I believe this is an acceptable spiritual path!

The first day of the retreat was New Year's Day, and the merciful Master gave everyone a beautiful surprise. The models in the Celestial Clothes show-windows had put on new Celestial Clothing of the latest designs, which brightened and attracted everyone's eyes! The most special items were the fourth series of Celestial Jewelry that Master designed exclusively for children. Exquisitely and cutely styled, the collection included "God's Children," "Little Bodhi," "E.T." and "Maitreya Buddha". They were crafted in gold and inlaid with various gems; the designs were graceful and lovely. Anyone who saw them couldn't help praise them. There were also the "Sun" that symbolizes father, and the "Moon" that stands for mother. Master said that when the children wear them, they are reminded to be filial to their parents. Master noticed the active and vivacious nature of the children, so the fourth series of Celestial Jewelry was sturdily made to prevent them from being damaged when the children are playing. Everyone greatly admired Master's loving consideration.

Spiritual Practitioners Should Not Be Too Stubborn

That evening, Master wore a white dress with a red print, and Her hat was tied with a red scarf under Her chin. The festive look of this uniquely styled outfit enlivened everyone's spirit.

Master told us a story about Jei Zi Tui who lived in the Spring and Autumn Era of ancient China. Jei Zi Tui was meritorious for helping Jin Wen Gong (Prince Wen of Jin State) to get to the throne. However, he abhorred working with the king's corrupted colleagues, so he lived in a hermitage with his mother deep in a mountain, and refused to accept the reward from Jin Wen Gong. To force him to serve in his court, Jin Wen Gong ordered the mountain be set on fire, thinking that Jei Zi Tui, being a filial son, would definitely flee from the mountain fire with his mother. Unexpectedly, he embraced his mother and both were killed in the fire, leaving a most regrettable page in history. To commemorate him, Jin Wen Gong made wooden clogs out of a tree on the mountain, and would say "Zu Xia" (these two words literally mean "under the feet," but is a Chinese way to address someone respectfully) whenever he put on them, to remember Jei Zi Tui.

Master said that the Chinese sometimes worship the wrong heroes. Jei Zi Tui was unreasonably stubborn to reject the reward. Had he accepted the reward, his mother could live a better life. Instead of providing a rich life for his mother, he embraced her to be burnt to death with him. He was indeed unfilial! Besides, Jin Wen Gong resorted to using this trick only because he loved talented people. By burning himself to death, Jei Zi Tui hurt Jin Wen Gong's admiring heart, and made him feel miserable for the rest of his life. Therefore, we cannot say that Jei Zi Tui was loyal to his king and loved his country.

He once fed Jin Wen Gong with his own flesh when his king was in danger, he preferred to live in a hermitage, and he despised wealth and fame -- these were indeed virtues. However, he was most ignorant to sacrifice the lives of his mother and himself due to his obstinacy!

Master advised us that spiritual practitioners should not be too stubborn. Some people often abuse God's name, claiming that everything is arranged by God, even illnesses which need medical treatment by doctors. The truth is, God has also arranged doctors to heal illnesses. Master's words reminded the fellow disciples to be always on the alert on the spiritual path, and to avoid falling into the trap of going to extremes.

Protect The Faith Of The Monastic Practitioners

It drizzled persistently on the second day of the New Year. Master told the guards to direct fellow initiates to find sheltered areas from the chilling rain to meditate in. They split into many groups some went to the underground building in the Rainbow Garden, some to the old meditation hall where Master's publications are displayed, some to Tai Yin meditation hall and others to the empty area near the Celestial Clothes exhibit. Master also gave special instructions to take good care of the aged. Fellow initiates acted very fast and with good cooperation. Master came many times to give us lectures. She was received by thunderous applause when She gracefully appeared at the underground building in the Rainbow Garden, wearing a white coat, white hat and a narrow long turquoise color skirt. Master bombarded the fellow disciples with jokes, elevating their souls amid laughter and humor. During Her discourses that day, Master told us that infinite merit is incurred by encouraging or allowing other people or one's relatives to become monastic practitioners. As Master's mission is very difficult, people who help with Master's work must have great perseverance to continue. Therefore, it is very important to protect the faith of the monastic practitioners, which is everyone's responsibility.

People who work with Master should endeavor to mix with the multitude in order to spread the teachings to them, and help them fit into the life style of the Quan Yin Method. However, it is not easy to find monastic people who will devote unreservedly. Master then read a passage in which the Buddha praised monastic devotion.

Realizing Master's painstaking effort and love in training the monastic disciples, everyone was moved to tears. Master said, "You can meditate with better concentration after being washed by my tears!" To teach sentient beings, Master's silent tears are as vast as the oceans, and are infused into each heart to water the young spiritual plants, to help them grow strong.

Do Things With A Loving Intent

During the 4-Day Retreat, through telling us stories, Master reminded us that spiritual practitioners must be patient. When the time comes, we will know that the words of a saint can protect us, and see us through ordeals. Master hoped that fellow initiates would listen to Her teachings with their wisdom, instead of just imitating Her actions.

It is bad to do things without really benefiting others! For instance, when helping the old folks in the homes for the aged, the destitute families or the homeless, we should render help to them naturally, and not do it just to satisfy our desire to show off. The seniors did not need any make-up, but they were forced to put it on.

The purpose that Master taught us to put on make-up was to protect our family life, and not to emphasize the material. It should be done as natural as wearing a raincoat on rainy days. Should our marriage encounter obstacles, our daily life and spiritual practice would both be affected. We help people in order to give them warmth, and practical aid. Do things with a loving intent, and not to satisfy our ego. Otherwise, instead of earning merit, we will create karma and let the maya of arrogance grow in us.

After the evening meditation session, Master appeared before us in a grayish blue pant outfit. She reminded us that we are only visitors on this planet, and will eventually leave one day. Only when we have realized the ephemerality of the physical body while we are living, then we seek the eternal. The Quan Yin Method -- the secret way to liberation, is unknown to most people. Therefore, we are always living in pain, and need Master to take us back to the eternal abode.

Master humorously imitated the way we doze off when meditating, to illustrate that if all of us can become one and do the same thing, we won't sometimes come up with bad thoughts; all undesirable thoughts will disappear. Hearing Master's words, fellow initiates burst into loud laughter!

The Importance Of Humbleness

Master also told us a story with a profound meaning: Archangel Michael told a person practicing meditation, that he was assigned a great mission to save sentient beings.

The meditation practitioner replied to the angel, "I think you have made a mistake. I have no virtue; I don't deserve this!" The angel then left.

Master said that this angel was manifested by maya (the negative power) to test the spiritual practitioner. Fortunately, this practitioner had no greed for fame or profit.

If we do, we will attract demonic obstacles to us. The Maya King will fake the enlightened Master to mislead the anxious and careless practitioners. He will tempt them, test them, and lead them astray from the spiritual path. The devil will brainwash us and tell us we have attained complete enlightenment. Therefore, humility is very important. We must maintain our pure sincerity to avoid being fooled by any traps. Be humble in actions and in our hearts.

From Her pocket, the lovely Master took out the tiny note book that She always carries, and taught us to be prepared with pen and paper, so we can promptly note down inspirations emerging during meditation.

Master said that when we meditate, answers to our problems will surface; the God within will tell us what to do. If we do not note it down, we may forget very quickly. To help disciples in their practice, Master imparts all Her useful tricks to us.

After the discourse, Master strolled around the venue blessing everyone. Touched by the spirit of the disciples' sincerity to meditate, braving the severe cold, Master said, "I cherish your love very much!"

On the third day's afternoon, while fellow initiates were immersed in a serene meditative ambiance, Master came! Again She fed us the supreme spiritual food. She revealed why the Quan Yin Method is so hard to acquire: it is reserved for people who forsake everything to seek the Truth. There are plenty of spiritual practitioners, but few of them ever find the true spiritual path. Appreciating Master's kind reminder, fellow practitioners treasure their blessings even more.

The retreat would end the next day! The scheduled time to retire to bed had passed, yet fellow initiates were reluctant to go, and insisted Master tell them more stories. When the children wouldn't go to sleep, Mother Master also couldn't rest.

Answering the longing of disciples, She again came down to tell them stories. She put lots of candies in the basket of Her golf cart; the disciples were extremely blessed to be able to sit around Master listening to Her stories, and also enjoying the candies.

Rejoicing In The Ching Hai Day Celebration

On the fourth day of the New Year, the Ashram was even more beautifully decorated to create a warm and festive mood. Beneath the eaves were hung many classical Chinese lamps; on the trees there were attractive floral ornaments and artistic characters to wish everyone a wonderful New Year. At the entrance of the Rainbow Garden, the lovely mice greeted and wished everyone "good luck in the year of the rat". As the retreat ended, guests started to pour in and this made the Ashram more lively. The Ching Hai Day celebration was about to begin!

On February 22, the Third Anniversary Celebration of Ching Hai Day, many guests and VIPs congratulated Master at the Ashram. They included: Mr. Daniel E. Milla and his wife and daughter -- Ambassador of Honduras in R.O.C.; Mr. Lin Xi Hou -- National Congress Representative; Madam Jiang Yu Mei -- wife of the Director of Chang Hang Transportation Company under the Chang Rong Group; Mr. Lin Bing Yiu -- Director of the Youth Entrepreneurs Society; Mr. Rong Zi Hao -- Director of International Life Line; Mr. and Mrs. Wu Bo Bun -- Chief of Keelung Health Bureau; Mr. Ku Mu Xian -- Chief of Hsihu Hsiang in Miaoli; the wife and son of Mr. Zheng Man Qing -- founder of the Zheng Tzu thirteen styles Tai Chi Chuan; Mr. Wang Xia Chang and his wife Madam Zhao Bi Zhu -- President of R.O.C. Enterprises Management Association; Mr. Kao Ji Yuan and his wife -- Executive Director of the Taiwan Ecological Art Foundation; Mr. Liu Wen Chao -- TV host of Zhen Xiang News Network; Mr. Liu Yi Wai -- reporter of China TV; reporter Hsu Su Nan from Zhong Yang Daily News; reporter Hwang Rui Dian from Liberty Times; reporter Li Jia Jing of the English Chinese Economic News Agency; and many others.

The Ambassador of Honduras, Mr. Daniel E. Milla with his wife and daughter, came all the way from Taipei to Hsihu Center joining Supreme Master Ching Hai to celebrate the Third Anniversary of Ching Hai Day and the Chinese New Year. Accompanied by the Courtesy Group, they appreciated Master's works of art including Her paintings, Celestial Clothes, Celestial Jewelry, Longevity Lamps and others. They couldn't help tremendously praising Master's artistic talents.

Joyous music and the noise of firecrackers could be heard everywhere in the Center -- Master was coming down! Escorted by the auspicious dragon, She walked around the venue to wish everyone a happy New Year. Master then gave little stuffs toys that had been decorating Her golf cart to the little and big children.

Resounding in everyone's ears were the words of blessing from the enlightened Master: "An auspicious New Year to every one! Auspicious! Auspicious! I wholeheartedly wish that everyone will be successful and propitious in everything!"

To bring good luck, the green dragon danced in among the crowd as if it was flying in the sky. The celebration program of Ching Hai Day began amid warm applause.

Dressed in exotic costumes, fellow initiates from Singapore presented a traditional Malay dance, bringing joy and auspiciousness to the occasion. Au Lac initiates from the United States sang "Happy New Year" in chorus; their voices were so beautiful, as they sang from the depth of their souls. Everyone was deeply touched. A Spanish Dance by the Formosan initiates was vivaciously performed -- and very romantic. Australian initiates sang a song entitled "Mary's Lullaby" in soprano and bass, in which they piously expressed their gratitude to Master.

In "The Awakened Magicians" by the German initiates, the magicians were fed up with playing with magical power, so God sent them a message about Master. Hence, they read Master's sample booklets happily, and were intoxicated in Her holy love. The lyrics of the accompanying song: "Though separated by a thousand miles, I can still perceive Your graceful image. Though separated by a thousand miles, I can still feel Your divine love caressing me," deeply touched everyone's heart. Finally, the magicians manifested a small banner with the English word "CONGRATULATIONS" on it; even Master was touched and applauded them.

Accompanied by seemingly esoteric and remote music, two Indonesian initiates presented a classical dance. A Korean sister performed a traditional fan dance with superior skill. She wore a bride's costume with a classical white blouse and a loose red skirt. With a huge fan in each hand, she danced beautifully and nimbly, winning thunderous applause.

Peace To The World And Joy To The Universe!

There were many congratulatory telegrams from overseas and within the country. Political personages and friends from many countries, and fellow practitioners from throughout the world all wished Master a happy Ching Hai Day, and thanked Master for bringing a message of peace to the world. Governor Arnie Carlson of Minnesota, U.S.A. and his special aide Mr. James. Franklin also sent congratulatory telegrams. Mrs. Barbara Finch -- Administrative Aid to the Governor of the State of Iowa, U.S.A., expressed in her telegram that she was extremely touched by Master's sincere contribution, and she wholeheartedly thanked Master for helping disaster victims all over the world, and in bringing peace and enlightenment to people. Mr. Morato -- Consultant to the President of the Philippines, and Chairman of the Philippine Sweepstake Charity congratulated Master, and said that he would pray for Master. Mr. Ashok from India, on behalf of the Indian spiritual practitioners, hoped Master would be filled with God's grace on Ching Hai Day, and would have Her dream realized. Among the overseas telegrams was one sent by Mr. Naran -- the Indian Consulate in Indonesia. Those sent within the country included Mr. Xu Shuei-Der -- General Secretary of the Central Committee of Kuomintang in Formosa; Mr. Lin Yang-Gang -- candidate running for Presidency, and he praised that Master's righteous deeds have brought great merit to Formosa and her people which is indeed a blessing to the residents of this island. In her telegram, Legislator Chu Fong-Chi thanked Master for conducting the International 4-Day Retreat to pray for world peace, thus bringing blessings and peace to the whole world and to the two sides of the Formosa Strait. Telegrams from other VIPs included: Mr. Huang Zuen-Chiu -- Advisor, Office of the President; Mr. Wang Jin-Ping -- Deputy Chief of the Legislative Council; Mr. Lin Hong-Zong, Mr. Lin Yuen-Shan, Mr. Wang Zi-Hsiung; and Madam Huang Zao-Shuen.

The happy day was approaching the end, and the rain was still falling. Master said, "In India, rainfall represents God's blessing. In the last few days, God has blessed us a lot!" (There was loud laughter and applause.) "I am grateful to the guests who put aside their work to celebrate this wonderful occasion with us. Let us wish that there will be peace to the world, and joy to the universe!"

At that moment, fireworks soared into the sky; the sound of music and rain cheered up every soul. Fellow initiates and guests alike bathed in the blessings from the enlightened Master and God, and enjoyed a meaningful celebration of the Chinese New Year.

A Retreat In The Temple Of God

The moment he set his feet inside the gate, he felt so natural, free, pure and simple! Fellow initiates were so friendly. Where else are you going to find such a large family like this? This large family may be composed of members of various skin colors, languages and backgrounds; but they all have the same goal -- to follow the greatest living spiritual master, Supreme Master Ching Hai, to be liberated in one life time.

This strong will power melted away the barrier between earthlings of different races and languages. It also melted away the awkward feelings that strangers often encounter. Master's saintly love is so profound, broad and delicate.

The colorful lamps and decorations everywhere in Hsihu brought about the joyous atmosphere of the Chinese New Year. This Chinese immigrant couple from Thailand had not celebrated Chinese New Year for more than 60 years! They treasured this opportunity to celebrate the New Year with Master. They repeatedly expressed their commitment to overcome any obstacles to come back to Hsihu Center for a retreat when there is another opportunity.

He said that the colder it was, the more he could feel the heat as a result of meditation. He never felt it when he was meditating at home in Thailand. The vibrations from doing Quan Yin especially made him feel good and radiated throughout his body. He finally understood why initiates from all over the world would fly to Hsihu when they hear about a retreat.

Some flew half way around the world, dragging their clumsy luggage without feeling tired. This is also proof of Master's power. Fellow initiates from throughout the world are full of experiences each time. Brother Huang feels that Hsihu is a sacred place, the temple of God. Sister Shiraishi's Tai Chi Chuan instructors, a couple, happened to be initiates. That's how she got a copy of Master's sample booklet. After reading the booklet, she was eager to know more about Master. Therefore, she came all the way from Japan to Hsihu to be initiated. In Japan, there are many places teaching people about methods of meditation. "Meditation" wasn't foreign to her at all. She had understandings about meditation, but after coming in contact with Master, she believes that the "Quan Yin Method" taught by Master is the true method of spiritual practice.

Thousands Of Disciples Celebrate The 3rd Anniversary
Of Ching Hai Day, Gathering At Hsihu Center
Amid Continuous Rainfall To Receive Supreme Master Ching Hai's Blessing

Yesterday, at Hsihu Center, several thousand of Supreme Master Ching Hai's disciples celebrated the 3rd Anniversary of Ching Hai Day, and also greeted the Chinese New Year. Withstanding the chilling weather and continuous rainfall, they received Supreme Master Ching Hai's blessing in the Forest Meditation Hall.

According to our understanding, on February 22, 1994, the Governors of six midwestern states of the United States, with the World Cultural Communication Association, commended Supreme Master Ching Hai with the World Spiritual Leadership Award, and proclaimed February 22 as Ching Hai Day to applaud Her relief efforts during the flood disaster of the six midwestern states.

From the first to the fourth day of this Lunar New Year, at the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association headquarters in Hsihu, Miaoli, a four-day retreat activity was being held. Disciples from throughout the world were here to pray for world peace in the form of meditation and spiritual practice.

Later, Supreme Master Ching Hai's disciples from all over the world performed programs rich in their national culture. To celebrate the joyous Lunar New Year, many delicacies especially prepared for the festival were served. In addition, many Celestial Clothes, Celestial Jewelry and paintings created by Supreme Master Ching Hai were also displayed.

Legend Of The Wok Soot

Fellow brother Cho Chuei-Huan -- a Tai Chi expert, who was standing to one side verified Master's words with his professional knowledge. He also, mentioned that since the Center only burns natural materials, the wok soot is very pure, and is therefore even more precious. At present, the only way to find this Chinese medicine is to search for it in some remote villages in China.

"We have it right here; there is no need to go so far." Master told him, "You may suggest to your colleagues to get it here on Sundays, free of charge. They can get as much as they need; however, they have to clean our woks. Ha! Ha!" So, this is Cinderella's ("the ash girl") secret beautifying method! Knowing the "value" of the soot, fellow practitioners were all set to "take action". With the supreme blessing of the enlightened Master, this soot is a guaranteed elixir, treasurable medicine and invaluable blessed item -- no one could resist taking some. Master immediately sensed their thoughts, and said, "I am afraid you will become a mob fighting to get the soot, and make yourselves all black."

A fellow sister said that she has a gastric and intestinal disease, and a Chinese herbal doctor once told her that only this kind of pure substance could cure her. She never imagined that she could get this precious medicine in the Center, which was even blessed by Master's words. She was overjoyed. So, we can see that all Master's words and actions, even just chatting or a joke, benefit sentient beings.

New Year's Presents For The Refugees

Master, who has always cared for and loved the Au Lac refugees, instructed the Hong Kong disciples to bring New Year's gifts to the asylum seekers in the local refugee camps, as in previous years, to share the holiday joy with them. For this purpose, Master sent money to purchase the needed items.

We obtained permission from the High Island Refugee Camp to give presents to all of its residents. Fellow practitioners had already collected all the gifts which had been ordered earlier and delivered to the Wangjiao Center. After group meditation, fellow initiates formed groups to divide various candies into small bags, and pack other gifts (including a colorful towel, a container of biscuits and a can of tea) into individual packages, and put them into paper boxes.

Listening to Master's songs, the disciples forgot about their fatigue and worked diligently; in just a few hours they finished packing all the gifts, which altogether weighed three tons. Many new initiates who participated in the work were very happy and devoted. The gifts we loaded into a vehicle and driven to the distant High Island Camp at night. There everyone waited for the next day's visit.

When the gifts were distributed, each asylum seeker obtained an individual package. Everyone was very happy; the children all smiled widely upon seeing whole bags of candies; and the adults' most favorite item was tea. Moreover, everyone was very grateful to Master for offering towels to them each year. Whenever they picked up their towels throughout the year, they could feel Supreme Master Ching Hai's love and mercy. After the gifts were distributed, the atmosphere in the Camp became very peaceful and harmonious.

The Warm Stream Of Love

Master's love is like a warm stream in a cold winter, warming impoverished families. During the period before the new year, under Her loving instruction, some needy families were visited.

One old lady was in her seventies. She lived on the vegetable leaves that were discarded in the vegetable market. After we conveyed Master's love to her, she said that she owed society too much and would rather earn her own living than be a burden to others. However, Master's sincere love moved her so much that she accepted a small package of crackers, the News magazines and a sample booklet. According to the neighbors, this old lady usually did not accept relief offerings and refused to be listed by the government as a welfare recipient. But this time, she felt Master's selfless love; thus willingly accepted the crackers and developed an affinity with Her.

In another case, a father and daughter depended on each other in order to survive. The father was old and in poor health, so he could only do odd jobs to support them. In order to help, his daughter, a high school student, was about to quit school to find a job. Gifts and Master's best wishes for a prosperous New Year were offered. The girl was very happy and kept asking why Master had chosen her family from among the many. We explained: "Because you have an affinity with our Master, She not only wishes you a Happy New Year, but also sends you a New Year's gift." Upon hearing that she had an affinity with Master, the girl delightfully accepted the gift and kept reading the News magazines. She was surprised at how lucky she was to encounter such a beautiful Master. A girl from next door came over and also liked Master very much. She kept asking, "If I practice the Quan Yin Method, will I be as pretty as She is?"

A young gentleman by the name of Wang, who lived with his mentally handicapped mother, had just lost his father. They were not only given material help, but the young man was also counselled that the best way to fulfill his filial duty was to meet a living master and practice the method of liberation. Such practice would benefit his family, friends and relatives. Master's timely love caused Mr. Wang to feel very grateful, and at his father's funeral he played Master's Buddha Chanting cassette tape to let Master bless his father's soul.

When a white haired lady in her nineties heard that Master wished her a happy New Year, her tears fell on Master's picture of the News magazine she was holding. We taught her how to recite Master's holy name, and told her that Master would take care of her. This moved her to tears even more.

In this activity following Master's directive to visit and comfort the poor, we found that besides material help, poor people need more love, care and spiritual support. We learned a great deal through this activity!

Comforting The Poor And Approaching The Truth

Before the Lunar New Year, fellow initiates paid an advanced visit to the poor families in the Taichung area, and corresponding to their poverty level, gave them loving care and assistance.

The local government already has a budget that provides material relief for the poor. But spiritually, only true loving care can comfort their souls. Initiates took the opportunity during their second visit to these impoverished families, to bring with them gifts filled with Master's love and sincere concern, such as foods and other daily necessities. These activities brought heartwarming feelings to the poor families.

Through the visit, I found with surprise that some families live in poverty with ease. Thus the words of the folk adage, "Live in poverty with ease and enjoy approaching the Truth," became more meaningful. These people's minds are not as chaotic as those of ordinary people. They are calmer and closer to the Truth. Master uses this means to teach us another lesson. I also reminded myself to bring audio tapes to those old people with poor eyesight, so they can enjoy Master's marvelous voice and spiritual teachings.

Being Grateful And Cherishing Blessings

Since Master advocated the activity of 'sending warm feelings to needy people in the cold winter,' the Nantou Center carried out this activity. With certain groups taking care of certain areas, each of the fellow initiates had a chance to participate. In the process of investigating who needed help, and what would fulfill their needs, fellow initiates learned a lesson of true love and concern for those in need. Before the second phase of visiting activities, fellow initiates carefully bought, packaged and labeled specific items needed by each family, hoping to give them a warm surprise in the cold winter.

During the charity visits, fellow initiates learned about the firm and indomitable vitality of these old people, who led a poor but very dignified life by gleaning and collecting scraps, or tilling land. They were deeply touched by our charity visits and expressed their great appreciation. Master's love made them laugh and regain their long lost sense of happiness.

Through this activity, fellow initiates from the Nantou Center experienced breakthroughs in all aspects of their lives, and learned a finer and broader lesson about love than they had ever learned before. They became more understanding and appreciative, and cherished their good fortune. We are extremely lucky to have met a living Master who can teach us the Quan Yin Method! Now, we disciples should encourage each other, make the best use of our limited lifetimes, and practice more diligently.

Each Day Is A Miracle

Even when we are warm, have enough food, and are in times of joy, Master never forgets the suffering and destitute people.

Upon receiving the directive to "Convey Warmth In The Cold Winter," Changhua Center fellow practitioners immediately went into action investigating, purchasing, and liaising with the appropriate people. The Neighborhood Chief enthusiastically provided us with a name list, and even led us to visit the destitute households.

Carrying along gifts and the Supreme Master Ching Hai News magazines, fellow practitioners conveyed Master's divine love and teachings to these friends in distress. Hearing the fellow practitioners' stories of their gratitude towards Master, bliss and light began to shine from those originally dim and sad looking faces.

A disabled old man happily said that several years ago, he attended Master's lecture in Changhua. He never imagined that at this most distressful moment of his life, Master's boundless love and blessing would grace him and give him so much joy.

This loving visit, apart from sharing Master's holy love with more people, was also a good chance for fellow practitioners to learn some lessons. Master once said, "After initiation, each day is a miracle." Observing these unfortunate beings suffering from illnesses and adversity, in contrast to our peaceful, happy and blissful lives after the initiation, we must praise that this is the greatest miracle, and also the best experience.

A Year End Party At The Old Folks Home

To carry on with the "convey warmth in the cold winter" activities, fellow practitioners from Chiayi delightfully visited the Ji Mei Benevolent Home, to hold a warm and lively Year End Party for the old folks there. Fellow practitioners who were assigned to perform were grateful to Master for giving them this opportunity to spread love to those in need.

At appropriate moments, the host would recite some of Supreme Master Ching Hai's aphorisms, or repeat some jokes told by Her. In a lighthearted and joyful way, Master's words of wisdom were infused into the hearts of the old folks.

Reporters from the Ju Lo Mountain in Chiayi also came to cover the event, and the footage was broadcasted that evening. The reporter Jiang Hua-Ting expressed that, she had read Master's News magazines and watched Her videos. Greatly impressed by, and in agreed with she easily understood and accepted Master's teachings. She thought that it was very valuable for such a good spiritual group to mingle with all walks of life, thus allowing more people to understand Master's "simple but profound" teachings.

Superintendent Yan of the Ji Mei Benevolent Home was very grateful to the fellow practitioners for finding time to entertain the seniors. He said that it was the most lively and splendid occasion, and he sincerely hoped that our group would visit them more often.

After the gathering, fellow practitioners distributed to each senior Master's magazines and some snacks. Watching the old folks leave with contentment and bright smiles on their faces, fellow practitioners deeply realized that the Quan Yin Method is truly the greatest method! It is a method that "benefits others and ourselves," and that opens our wisdom and our latent talents. So true are Master's words: "The more we contribute, the faster we will progress." Apart from being a great spiritual Master, Supreme Master Ching Hai is also an educator and artist of life.

Stepping out of the Home, the wind was chilly, yet our hearts were warm.

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association Conveys Warmth In The Cold

Winter, And Entertains The Old Folks Of The Benevolent Home With Songs And Dances

Yesterday (Feb. 14) at around eight o'clock in the morning, about thirty members of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association -- Chiayi Center, led by their contact person, went to the Benevolent Home of the Ji Mei Society in Chiayi. With songs, dances, comic cross talks, and stories, they entertained and also presented New Year's gifts to the seniors who seldom have contact with the outside world. A warm atmosphere pervaded the venue during this "convey warmth in the cold winter" activity held by the Association.

Yesterday's activity was the first time that this group has comforted the old folks in the Ji Mei Society. According to the members of the Association, they will give more concern and care to the seniors in the future. While the program was being performed, the old folks also enthusiastically joined the performance on the stage. Everyone had fun together, and forgot their usually not so interesting and routine lives.

Some members of the Association exerted their best efforts in yesterday's performance, because they wanted to entertain the over a hundred seniors in the Home. Some of them told stories in a cheerful way, some gained laughter with their funny cross talk. To return the courtesy of the guests, the home also arranged some performances on the stage. The whole venue was filled with a heartwarming atmosphere.

To Love Others Is To Love Ourselves

The atmosphere of the Chinese New Year is getting intense, and the weather in winter is ever changing. The merciful and loving Master, sympathetic with the situation of the destitute families, instructed all local Centers to carry out a winter relief activity. She also encouraged fellow initiates to join in.

Filled with spiritual bliss, the fellow initiates of Taitung Center set off in high spirits in a car fully loaded with relief materials and money blessed with Master's love and mercy. Their cordial and meticulous concern warmed the hearts of the lonely and helpless old folks; they also gave spiritual support and consolation to orphans, widows or those who have had family mishaps. Each time they bid farewell to each other, both parties were filled with gratitude, and tears of emotion were often seen.

We are grateful to Master for letting us develop our love through participating in this charitable activity; we also realistically experienced "greater happiness in giving than in receiving". On the return journey, fellow practitioners exchanged insights, and deeply reflected on Master words: "To love others is to love ourselves."

A Lesson Of Love

At the end of a group meditation session at the Ilan Center, the contact person announced Master's instruction: Ilan disciples should go to visit elderly widowers and widows. On that day disciples gathered together at a specific time. With gifts, wool blankets, canned food and red envelopes filled with lucky New Year's money, as well as a list of elderly people to be visited, they started their engine in a light rain. A tape player was also turned on, and Master's voice filled the air, saying, "These are all lessons for us to learn!" The disciples knowingly smiled to each other. We were confident that with Master's arrangement this unknown mission would grant us an opportunity to apply our inner wisdom to practical ends.

Leaving the city, our vehicle entered a network of crisscrossed and winding country roads. Upon entering Daochen we encountered the first elderly person we planned to visit. After we had greeted him and explained our intentions, the old gentleman smiled brightly and accepted our gift, which was filled with Master's merciful love. Being curious and friendly, one after another, the neighbors and friends of the old gentleman inquired about Master and requested News magazines from us.

Another elderly man Mr. Lee, was in his eighties and blind in both eyes. He had a habit of listening to a Buddhist chanting and scripture reciting program on a local radio station. Upon realizing the purpose of our visit, his heart was deeply touched by Master's love and solicitude, and his face brightened and was brimming with happiness.

During our mission, which lasted several days, the vivid images of these elderly people made a deep impression on the disciples. Having witnessed the inevitable natural life processes of aging, becoming frail, and illness, we were reminded again that we should treasure every minute of life and practice diligently. Thanks to Master's loving arrangement, this mission strengthened our determination to practice. From now on, the journey of Truth seeking will be more fruitful!

Bright Light On A Cold Night

On winter evenings, Master frequently thinks about the homeless. So She instructed us to take care of and show concern for them. Some sister disciples from Ilan bought sleeping bags and food, and prepared "red envelopes" with lucky New Year's money and Master's News magazines; then got ready to visit the homeless.

One night, after they met together, broth ers and sisters began looking everywhere for homeless people while struggling against a chilling wind. But the homeless were not in their usual hiding places such as the railroad and bus stations. They were forced by severe weather to find warmer places. Just as they were wondering where to find these homeless people, a brother found one in a public lavatory. Thus, the first gift of the night was handed out.

It was extremely quiet on this chilly night. Most of the town's residents were already asleep and dreaming in their warm beds. However, those without homes were curled up, hiding under small overhanging shelters struggling to survive in the cold weather. Only Master's meticulous love could warm their bodies and nurture their souls. The initiates distributed gifts and necessities to each street person they could find - their eyes still foggy with sleep. Being in the twilight state, they thought it was another beautiful dream. How on Earth could anyone still remember them? Only a living enlightened Master would send them warmth and comfort their lonely souls!

The whole downtown area was searched, and all the gift they had brought were distributed. The night sky in Ilan was brightened because of Master's boundless, selfless love.

Recently, Master taught us how to beautify ourselves properly in five minutes after getting out of bed, and this was an important lesson in aesthetics, housekeeping and etiquette. Now, whenever we get out of bed, we think about God, and receive the infinite blessing from Hierm, because this five-minute make-up method was taught to us personally by God -- Master.

She cooks, She cuts and arranges fruit, She sings, and She dances; and with great compassion She allows Her life to be recorded on video tape for everyone to see. Therefore, we have learnt many wonderful skills which are useful for this world.

So, no matter what we are doing in daily life - cooking, cutting fruit, or doing anything, we are close to Her. Regardless of our spiritual level, and no matter how heavily we are burdened by worldly chores, we always spontaneously think about Her.

I remember Master once said, "If you really miss me, you would have attained great enlightenment long ago."

To help us always think about God, Master put forth great effort doing all kinds of things. Innumerable enlightened Masters have come and gone, and they all had boundless merits; their slightest gestures were recorded in scriptures. Nevertheless, which of them have so selflessly helped their disciples? Which of them have so unreservedly spread the Truth? Which of them have so easily let sentient beings discover their most noble traits?

Oh! With such boundless courage, She is willing to shoulder the karma of the whole world! And, with such infinite grace, She gives us the blessings to be Her disciples! Good Friends Become Fellow Practitioners

After initiation, our acts
and deeds are under the scrutiny
of our relatives and friends,
providing them with a reference for
when they choose to
pursue spiritual practice
in the future. It may not be effective
to deliberately preach
Master's teachings with other people.
On the contrary, we can attract them
by naturally revealing our
spiritual demeanor.

Although we were old friends of over twenty years, we had no contact in the last few years. Suddenly, they eagerly looked me up, because they wanted to borrow Master's cassette tapes and go to Miaoli to see Her. They immediately registered for the Convenient Method on their first visit there. Amazed, I asked them why they suddenly decided to join our practicing group when they could easily devote themselves to other masters without having to keep so many precepts. Both of them gave the same answer: "Observing that a smart person like you have followed Supreme Master Ching Hai for so many years, we knew that this Master must be an exceptional one. You have lived perfectly well all these years on a vegetarian diet and pursuing spiritual practice; when your parents died you did not fight over the family property, and you willingly gave up the position that you earned through over a decade's efforts; you have now become more happy and cheerful; obviously your spiritual path has brought you great benefits and no harm. Among our group of old friends, you are the pioneer in spiritual practice, and we wish to join you now that our time has come."

I was really surprised to hear their words! Indeed, after initiation, our speech and behavior are observed carefully by our relatives and friends, which also gives them a frame of reference when later they choose to practice spirituality. It may not be effective to deliberately spread Master's teachings verbally. Instead, we can attract others to pursue spiritual practice naturally by our manner as spiritual practitioners. I deeply realize that Master's teachings are not only to be propagated by words, but also through our every action in daily life.

For Love We Share

Through the Quan Yin Method taught by Master, I knock on the "door of joy" and grasp the true meaning of "eternal life". Embraced by the tender loving care from Master - the Head of the Quan Yin Family - I constantly bathe in happiness. Whenever I feel I have reached the summit of happiness, She always pushes me to an even greater blissful state, and more surprises. I can only shed a few tears deep within my heart in spontaneous appreciation. I sincerely call out to You, "Dearest and most gracious Master, I love You. Thank You for everything!"

Our limited language is not sufficient to express our adoration of the boundless Quan Yin Method. It is beyond shape and form, beyond spirit and intelligence, beyond conception and body.

In a state of total tranquillity and silence, I've found the origin of life, entered the world of perfection, and obtained true wisdom. Now, I can serve selflessly, with an egoless, clear heart.

New hope for the new year: I sincerely give my best wishes to those Truth seeking brothers and sisters, hopeful that they will create an affinity with the living Master and practice spirituality for liberation. For those who are already in the "Quan Yin Family," I hope they will follow Master's teachings, keep the precepts, attend group meditations, and practice diligently.

I realize that all experiences and good deeds come from Master's blessings and God's mercy. Any discrepancy is the result of neglect in the individual's practice. I hope that he/she will try hard to break through. Whenever I think of Master's words: "Remember we once tearfully promised God that when we are born as human beings again, we will make great contributions to mankind," I gather my courage and continue on the spiritual path.

I Have Quit Smoking!

After I was initiated, periodically I tried quitting smoking. In my sleep one night, I saw Master's transformation body. At that time, all kinds of emotions exploded in me, and I pressed myself against Her knees. I blissfully looked at Her, and felt both extremely excited and ashamed. I kept saying, "Master! I know I am wrong! I am sorry!" Like a loving mother, She counselled me in a reprimanding and exhortative manner, "This should be the last pack! Don't smoke anymore after this one, okay?"

I answered with certainty, "Okay!"

Again, like a mother teaching Her child, Master said kindly and softly, "Now that you have promised me, you must do it!" Upon waking up, I was in an unusual state of calm and bliss.

The next afternoon, I was supervising work on a construction site. I counted the remaining cigarettes in the pack, but I put them back in the case as I didn't feel like smoking. When I came home from work, I couldn't find that pack of cigarettes anymore, and I laughed happily.

Since then, I have not smoked another cigarette, nor even thought about smoking, and I am truly grateful for Master's positive power.

Relief Reports

The Most Serious Flood Disaster In U.S.A. In Thirty Years

-- Supreme Master Ching Hai Immediately Expressed Concern

According to reports from the American Red Cross, eleven counties were most seriously affected. They were Clackamas, Washington, Hood River, Benton, Lynn, Marion, Tillamook, Lincoln, Lane County and Deschutes.

The Mayor of Portland, Oregon requested volunteers to provide assistance to the people in the affected areas. Both the Governors of Oregon and Washington States declared this an emergency situation. President Clinton also visited the seriously affected areas.

As soon as Supreme Master Ching Hai learned about the disaster, She transferred fifteen thousand U.S. dollars and instructed fellow practitioners to carry out relief activities. When the fellow practitioners found that large quantities of blankets were needed by the victims to endure the cold nights, they divided themselves into several groups and, in a very short time, purchased the blankets in department stores and delivered them to the Red Cross that provided shelter for the victims. The staff of the Red Cross were deeply touched by Master concern and prompt support.

The New Port and Eugene areas were the most seriously affected. Fellow practitioners went there, taking with them the most urgently needed items such as food, medicine and cleaning supplies, and distributed them themselves. When they arrived in Vernonia, they saw that almost all the houses were destroyed, and mud and sand on the ground were a few feet high. The victims were trying to salvage what was left of their furniture. With Master's love, fellow practitioners had brought them in time what they urgently needed, cleaning supplies and others provisions. Feeling the sincere concern for them, the victims were moved to tears. In such a time of suffering, they needed spiritual support and consolation the most.

Some of the victims worried about their family members with whom they had lost contact as they went to the shelters. Fellow practitioners attentively enquired about their needs and offered them blankets, cleaning supplies and food, etc. Master's love and blessing comforted their hearts.

The representative of the local Salvation Army, who accompanied the fellow practitioners on their trip, was moved deeply by Master's way of providing relief, and so especially wrote a thank you letter to express their gratitude. The Willamette river caused destruction to some areas of the historically famous city along the river. Hoping Master Will Come Soon

Recently, the Tauranga Center in New Zealand participated in the Life and Health Exhibition, where they displayed prints of Master's paintings, photos, publications, and lecture and musical videos, which were warmly received by the spectators. Everyone got copies of Master's sample booklet and News magazine; warmth and bliss could be seen clearly on their faces.

People from the exhibit booths facing ours came over to ask about Master and spiritual practice; they even forgot to take care of their own stands. Deeply touched by watching Master's videos, a lady said that she was extremely impressed by Master's efforts in helping the whole world, especially the concern and aid extended toward the asylum seekers and disaster victims. An enthusiastic gentleman, who once attended Master's lecture in Brisbane, Australia, and was one of the conveners of this exhibition, requested us to show Master's videos in the main hall. This attracted many spectators who watched with great enthusiasm. At the venue, many people enrolled for the initiation, or to learn the Convenient Method. A person who was a teacher by profession, expressed his hope to introduce Master to his pupils, and eagerly asked for information and materials. Many spectators were interested in vegetarianism, therefore the recipes being distributed at our booth soon fell short of demand.

Fellow practitioners from various places truly displayed their cooperative spirit in helping with this exhibition. From as far as Auckland and Hamilton they came to help introduce Master's teachings to people with affinity, inserting fliers, and distribute sample booklets.

During the exhibition, the entire venue was filled with a peaceful atmosphere, and bliss and laughter were on the faces of everyone. Blessed by Master, our booth beamed with Her holy love, harmony and bliss, which attracted many spectators. Some were amazed and asked, "Are these beautiful magazines really given free of charge?" Others simply sat down to enjoy Master's music video. "I hope Master will come soon!" is the heartfelt voice of the Truth aspirants here.

Propagating The Truth In Prisons

Due to Master's loving concern toward the incarcerated people, She instructed fellow practitioners to visit them periodically, conveying consolation and God's divine love to them. Many prisons welcomed the idea of receiving books and magazines on a monthly basis, which they would keep in their libraries. They also invited fellow practitioners to introduce Master's teachings in the prisons.

The chaplain of a federal prison (with nearly 1,500 male and female inmates) in Phoenix told our fellow practitioners that the inmates longed very much to practice the Convenient Method, and he invited fellow practitioners to pay a visit there. On the day of the visit, these Truth aspirants piously and attentively listened to Master's biography and the benefits of practicing the Quan Yin Method. Master's powerful blessing pervaded the entire venue, and all the inmates had very good experiences. Some inmates, after watching Master's lecture videos, felt Her great love, and experienced the invisible and relaxed atmosphere. They all enjoyed Master's humorous expressions in the lectures, and were convinced that She indeed has the supreme power.

The inmates were so deeply touched by Master's love, that they repeatedly and sincerely invited our fellow practitioners to attend their annual religious celebration, to which our fellow practitioners willingly accepted. On that day, the inmates cordially received our fellow practitioners by offering them a vegetarian meal. Many inmates from various ethnic backgrounds came to attend the celebration. When fellow initiates introduced Master and Her teaching, many of them were attracted by the teachings and also moved by Master's photo, many enthusiastically inquired about the Truth. Some expressed their eagerness in learning the Convenient Method. The Supreme Master Ching Hai News and sample booklets brought in were quickly taken. Due to the demand of the inmates, many of Master's publications in Chinese, Au Lac language and Spanish were brought in the next day to help more people tie good affinities with Master.

The Prisoners Love Master's Paintings

Starting this year, fellow practitioners in Costa Rica have visited many correctional centers throughout the country to spread Master's teachings and exhibit prints of Her paintings. Master's teachings are widely accepted, and Her paintings have also attracted great interest from many people. This shows that the spiritual level of the people has elevated.

During the visit to a prison in Cartago Province, a young inmate was assigned to monitor the television and video recorder. He incidentally got a copy of Master's sample booklet several months ago, and had been reading it everyday. Looking at Master's photo on the cover, he longed to hear the sound of Her voice. When the video of Master's lecture was being shown, he was overwhelmed with joy, and watched with total concentration. When the video seminar was over, many requested to learn the Convenient Method. Inmates who attended were very friendly, and many of them even volunteered to help fellow practitioners hang up the prints of Master's paintings. They felt very close to Her.

The day fellow practitioners visited the Heredia Prison happened to be visiting day for relatives of the prisoners. Intrigued by Master's prints displayed by the fellow practitioners, inmates and their relatives talked about Her beauty and exceptional artistic talent. A child even requested for a copy of the Key of Immediate Enlightenment sample booklet, and asked his father to read it to him. This correctional center has established a small group to study Master's teachings, and practice the Convenient Method.

Fellow practitioners also visited the San Ramon Correctional Center, where Master's works of art were applauded by the inmates. The omnipresent and merciful light blessed each corner of the prison. People in the correctional center greatly admired the use of color in Master's prints, and many of them were mesmerized by the "Stone Cave" -- they could feel the light radiating from it. The inmates hoped that they could, like Master, get enlightenment through pursuing spiritual practice to develop their many talents.

Blessed by Master's holy love, the inmates were once more filled with hope; the longing for happiness and life again appeared on their faces.

Vegetarian House Offers New Year's Delicacies!

To introduce some delicious foods in a timely manner during their special Spring Festival Program, a production team from the Taichung Cable TV Company came specifically to the Taichung Vegetarian House because of its outstanding reputation. There, the team members videotaped a program on the restaurant's delectable New Year's dishes -- Wish-fulfilling Dumplings and Eight Treasured Fruit Royal Soup. Accompanied by the head chef's detailed explanations about the ingredients and methods of preparation, the video production went smoothly. The video team members also had the chance to taste several other dishes, and their praise was endless. In addition, Master's exquisite sample booklets and magazines attracted numerous visitors. This program was scheduled to air on various TV stations at different periods of time during the Spring Festival.

Under Master's loving blessing, a blissful atmosphere pervades the Vegetarian Garden Party.

Vegetarian Environmental Protection Garden Party

Fellow practitioners from Taichung Center participated in a garden party called "Revive the Earth," sponsored by several environmental protection groups. The participating groups had topics such as natural drinks and foods, animal protection, resource reclamation and so on as their promotional themes, and hoped to awaken the citizens' concern for the environment.

Fellow initiates from Taichung Center prepared Master's large pictures, prints of Her paintings, books and the vegetarian cookbook -- Supreme Kitchen, as well as each issue of the News magazine, exquisite posters and other promotional materials, and then richly displayed them in the venue. The brilliant, eye-catching arrangement made the passing visitors stop and linger at Master's booth. One sister who served as the chief chef was extremely busy preparing delicious vegetarian cookies and snacks for the visitors who were attracted by the aromas.

With Master's loving blessing power, the venue was permeated with a festive atmosphere, which added a touch of warmth and conviviality to the extremely cold winter. Thus, the bright future of vegetarian environmental protection has already come into view.

A Children's House Of Love

As the number of young initiates kept on increasing, the existing Children's House at the Chiayi Center became too small. Therefore, a new one was built near the parking lot.

The Children's House is an two storey structure donated by a fellow initiate, and was built voluntarily by fellow initiates. The upper floor is a meditation room for young initiates. The wall panels are light brown in color, on which Master's dignified portrait has been placed; the design is simple and classical. The ground floor is for classes and activities. There are some small tables, a blackboard and lots of paper and pens, etc.

The new Children's House brings about a new and dynamic atmosphere. The young initiates now have a world of their own where they can develop their many talents, and relish Master's love and teachings. No doubt this is the best gift from Master to the young initiates.

Elevated By Truth, Virtue And Beauty

In Szechuan Province where "Chi Gong" practice is popular, the people deeply long for the Truth and liberation. Their intense spiritual aspiration is reflected by the fact that some old aged veteran vegetarians have started to practice the Convenient Method, and many young persons living a very comfortable material life have taken the initiation.

In a village, the inhabitants there were very pure in mind. Due to the mistake of the working staff, a person requesting to practice the Convenient Method was refused, and induced to tears. Later, when his request was eventually approved, his tears changed laughter. When the Convenient Method was being taught, everyone was very sincere, and the atmosphere at the venue was holy. All of them had wonderful experiences.

More than ten temple monks received initiation. Among them was the head chef in a kitchen who often used eggs as an ingredient. He now is a strict vegetarian, and cooks only pure vegetarian meals. Even though the abbot of this temple is renown in China, he often encourages his disciples to follow Supreme Master Ching Hai. Whenever his followers ask him something, he recommends the Quan Yin Method and Master to them.

Master's power of Truth, beauty and virtue has visibly and invisibly changed the whole society. Fellow practitioners in mainland China can feel that the atmosphere of the country is becoming better, and there have been improvements in all aspects.

Report From Northeastern China

An Old Abbot Who Led A Simple Life Without Seeking Fame And Gain

In the northeastern region of China, there was an old temple abbot who had been doing Zen meditation for years. After receiving Master's book, he began to feel an incredible power pulling him to a higher realm every time he meditated. His soul was filled with a sense of peace and happiness that he had never felt before. He was surrounded by a joyful atmosphere all day long. From then on, he could not wait to learn the Quan Yin Method of meditation from Master.

This old monk deeply understood that if he stayed in the temple, he had to receive followers and pilgrims, and this would make it hard for him to practice. Thus, in order to uplift his spiritual level and progress faster in his practice, without hesitation, he resigned his position as abbot, gave up receiving monetary offerings from others, and took his disciples with him to practice the Quan Yin meditation. He soon found another quiet and secluded ashram. Earning his living by planting fruit trees, he lived a simple life, and practiced peacefully and quietly.

An Enthusiastic Retired County Magistrate

Since receiving Master's precious book -- The Key of Immediate Enlightenment, a retired county magistrate has been actively introducing Master's teachings to his relatives and friends. Everyone he has contacted is sure that Supreme Master Ching Hai is a real enlightened Master.

Nearly a hundred of his relatives and friends began eating a vegetarian diet on their own initiative and waited for initiation. Some of them could not wait and asked everywhere about information regarding initiation. Hearing about this, the retired county magistrate became ever more determined to seek the Truth. He often read Master's books and listened to Her tapes all night long without sleeping. He counseled everyone that they needed patience in order to obtain the Truth. Sure enough, soon after, a Quan Yin messenger came and gave them initiation as they had longed for. They were filled with joy, and some even shed tears.

On the day of initiation, despite his fatigue, the county magistrate enthusiastically helped out at the venue.

Report From Palawan, The Philippines

Due To Master's Love, The Children's Playground Is Restored

When Master first went to the Palawan Refugee Camp in the Philippines, She arranged the construction of a playground for the children. Recently, She compassionately instructed fellow practitioners in the camp to restore the park because all the play equipment was unusable.

Thanks to Master's love and Her gracious arrangements, within a week the park was restored to its useful, original state. This is the best New Year's present that Master could have given to the children in the camp. The white clouds which float freely in the boundless blue sky perfectly compliment the magnificent green grass of the park.

When the restoration work commenced, we were surrounded by all the curious and excited children who watched us and talked amongst themselves: "Master is fixing up the playground for us," "Uncle, uncle! Master is fixing the slides for us, right uncle?"...

Listening to this made me very emotional and I said to myself: "That's right, Master understands and loves you all very much."

The restoration program was completely Master's idea and She even instructed us as to the method of construction as well as arranged everything. Before commencing the work, we were not sure where to begin because we had never used tools such as welding torches before. In the end, we prayed to Master and proceeded with the work anyway. We focused on the work, and like children with pure hearts, we received Master's love.

Thinking back to the days prior to that moment I can recall when we went into the nearby woods to gather sticks. There we found many big logs which could be cut into boards. We finally cut them into boards and brought them back to the center. A few days later while doing the restoration work on the park, we suddenly realized that these boards were given to us by Master because they could be used as flooring for the children's UFO slide playhouse.

Master, You are so delicate and compassionate. If the floor had been covered with metal sheets, it would have been dangerous for the children, and besides the metal would corrode.

Since the park has been restored, every afternoon children happily run to the colorfully decorated park together. Some are too small to go by themselves so their parents have to accompany them. This gives parents the opportunity to melt into the children's world and forget their sad predicament. The children were being bathed in love with their eyes glistening and smiles on their faces, as they gently walk up the stairs leading to the UFO playhouse, which is full of wonderful toys.

But the purest form of beauty in the entire park is on the summit of the grandest slide where there is a statue of a dragon preparing to fly. The dragon also signifies the sacred aspect of the spiritual world where eternal life awaits all sentient beings in the universe.

We, the Palawan fellow practitioners are very grateful for Master's blessings. You are the one who gives us love and attention in the right place, at the right time and which is practical for the circumstances we live in. You are the joy and the lifeblood for the children, for us and for everyone in the Palawan camp.

Master's Love Graces The Philippines Again

All the while, Master has been very concerned about the Filipino people. When Mount Pinatubo erupted several years ago, Master's group was the first international organization to despatch a relief team to the affected area. When Master went to the Philippines to meet President Ramos, She consented to carry on helping the disaster victims to rebuild their homes.

Recently, She has been busy teaching sentient beings, but She has not forgotten the suffering victims all over the world, or the needy in the Philippines. Master has lately remitted a further US$30,000 to the President Ramos Relief fund to let him help the Filipino victims directly. President Ramos was very touched by Master's noble and righteous deed.

Mr. Morato, Chairman of the Philippine Sweepstake Charity and Consultant to the President, extends his best wishes of blessing to Master. He often reads Her magazines, and praises that Her benevolent heart and actions make Her beautiful virtues show even on the outside. Therefore She has become prettier. Observing Master shouldering this noble mission, and contributing Her life to benefit humankind, he is truly in awe. Celebrating Ching Hai Day In Calcutta

On February 22, the world was celebrating Ching Hai Day; in Calcutta, India, fellow initiates, would-be initiates and some friends interested in Master's teachings also got together to celebrate the Day. Several local VIPs who admired Master also respectfully sent telegrams to congratulate Her. (Refer to Feature Report)

On that day, besides displaying Master's scriptures and other publications for the guests, the Quan Yin messenger explained to them the origin of Ching Hai Day, and showed them the videos of Master receiving the World Peace Award in Hawaii in 1993 and World Spiritual Leadership Award in Chicago in 1994. The Indian friends wholeheartedly admired Master's righteous efforts in elevating the spiritual level of humankind, and Her great compassion in helping sentient beings in unfortunate circumstances throughout the world. (Most of the guests were local people who helped in the last disaster relief activity in Calcutta.)

After watching the videos, the guests asked some very appropriate questions related to Master's teachings and concerning spiritual practice. Most of them agreed: Master's teachings largely conform with the theories of the major religions in India. Therefore, it was easy for them to accept Her teachings. Some guests thought that Master had deep affinity with India, because She practiced the Quan Yin Method and attained the ultimate Truth in the Himalayas. Now that the time is right, She is feeding the Quan Yin Method back to the Indian people. They sincerely hope that Master will come to India one day to propagate this method of Truth.

After the gathering, some Indian friends who were life vegetarians enrolled for the initiation or to learn the Convenient Method. They worship the God that they believe in very piously; but deep inside, they realize that only by following a living enlightened Master can they find God and eternal peace within.

Master's Wonders

Deja Vu

Then I flew low and found a hill with many low but very lovely trees. Ah! I saw a lot of people meditating under the trees. After a while, I noticed that they were listening to a discourse given by someone who I knew was Supreme Master Ching Hai. She was wearing a long blue dress, and even though I didn't notice the dress design, I knew that it was an Au Lac dress. I suddenly felt a deep longing in my heart to be one of them. The pleasant atmosphere and the sound of rustling leaves was so inviting that I wanted to stay longer.

Attending the Supreme Master Ching Hai Day 7-Day Retreat (my first visit to Miaoli), suddenly made my dream become clear. We had our daily meditation in the Forest Meditation Hall under hundreds of lovely trees. On the stage was Master's big framed photo hanging in the background. In that photo, Master was wearing a long blue Au Lac dress embellished with golden dragons - it was so regal. Everything was beautiful to me, including the so-called dream that has now become a reality.

Staying Loose

I was taken aback for a moment. Of course it is good when we exert our best efforts to complete our work, but if we could be like the young sister, who knows how to relax during a pressing situation, then we could surely be closer to perfection in everything we do. The young sister was only six years old. From her candid and sincere words, one could tell that Master's considerate love had been quietly planted deep in the heart of this future Buddha.

Do Not Give To Others What You Do Not Want

Some time ago, brother Chen Wong-Hu was feeling very awkward about everything he did. He ran into difficulties in just about everything. Even his favorite automobile became a problem. He took it to a repair shop several times, but no specific reasons for the problems could be found; and as soon as he drove it out of the shop, the problems would return. His car was an imported luxury model which normally did not have such problem, so brother Chen wanted to sell it.

Shortly after, brother and sister Lee went to visit him. During the course of their conversation, they mentioned that one should read Master's books, watch Her video tapes, and listen to Her cassette tapes often. The next day, after brother Chen finished meditating, he casually picked up a News magazine and read the article entitled "Master's Secret of Attaining Enlightenment". In the article She said, "Do you know how I attained Enlightenment? It's because I always think about others. You are still stuck there, saving all the good things for yourselves, grabbing the best food for yourselves..."

After coming to this understanding the knot in brother Chen's heart was released. He suddenly felt relieved and clear. He was determined to find out what the problem was, no matter how much money he had to spend. The next day, he took the car back to the same shop and it only took the same mechanic a short time to find the problem and solve it!

Brother Chen learned many lessons from this experience: give the best to others; listen to Master's tapes and read Her books more often; and apply Her teachings in daily life. Whether it's dealing with other people or reflecting on oneself, we must behave with utmost sincerity.

Everything Master says is very significant. If we are not careful, we may miss the opportunity to know many secrets!

Be Gentle Toward Others

I used to be very rude. Although I am a girl, neither my speech nor deeds are usually very gentle. Even when I was working with the publications group, I made a lot of noise while moving books, not to mention when I did housework. I even made very loud noises when I walked, never considering that this might bother others.

During a 3-day retreat early last year, Master was walking among the disciples after a lecture. A guard called out to Master in a very loud voice, which totally startled Her. Imitating the tone of the guard, Master shouted, "Watch out! There are people in front Master!" At first all the initiates were shocked, then they burst into laughter. Master said that if you want someone's attention, you should speak in a very soft and gentle tone; talk in a low voice and don't be rude; learn to be gentle and smooth over the rough edges.

When we are around other people, and they can feel our gentle atmosphere; they won't react in a rude manner. Rude people will become gentler because of you. After creating a gentle environment, your heart will become more and more soft and you will be more warm toward others. When you are soft, your movements will be light and quick, and there won't be loud noises when you work. There will be serenity. Things at home will also last longer. When there is tranquillity, you will not feel irritated and it will be easy to enter samadhi when you meditate. Remember to walk softly, so that you won't disturb fellow practitioners in meditation.

Master uses every opportunity to teach us to cultivate our good qualities; change our rough vibrations, and raise our spiritual level. Therefore, the more we learn from Master, the closer we will be to the qualities of heaven.

Beautiful Within And Without

Fellow sister Tsu wears Master's photo everyday. One day, the owner of a garment shop told her, "I saw a lady today who was also wearing a photo of Supreme Master Ching Hai, but her appearance was very much different from yours!" After further enquiry, sister Tsu realized that this fellow sister was very badly dressed. Then, she understood that, though outer appearances do not necessarily represent the inner spiritual level, having tidy and clean attire easily evokes good feelings from others.

Through outer, elegant qualities of fellow practitioners, people with an affinity will first feel comfortable associating themselves with Master and our group; and then later further deepen that affinity. Possibly, in the near future, they may even join the Quan Yin Method group.

Happy Sitter

When my local meditation center informed me that I was to be the baby-sitter during group meditation, I was very excited yet unsure of myself. Having no prior experience, I was worried about whether I could handle this job; but I was excited because of the opportunity to serve fellow initiates!

I felt more relaxed when I arrived at the center and saw the lovely young initiates. After reading the instructions carefully, I realized that to be a good baby-sitter, one must have a lot of patience and selfless devotion.

During the two hours of group meditation, I performed many chores almost nonstop, including preparing the dessert to be served after meditation. Because I have never been a good cook, I was a little worried about whether my cooking would suit everyone's taste. To my surprise, they all said, "Tastes good!" I was thrilled!

One young initiate suddenly had a fever and cried for his mother. I held him and said, "Don't cry. Mommy will be here soon. Master will bless you and your pain will be gone!" Soon he stopped crying and after a little while, he even volunteered to be the "little sitter" to help me keep order. What a lovely little Bodhisattva!

Looking at these cute little angels' faces and seeing the satisfaction on the faces of fellow initiates enjoying the food after meditation, my inner joy could not be described with words. Thank You, Master, for giving me the opportunity to learn and to serve!

Spot Light

The Lotus Flowers In Heaven

There was a man who had no money to buy shoes, and so was very frustrated. One day, when he was out, he saw a very happy man chatting delightfully with people; he even danced and sang. When he looked carefully, he found that this man had no feet! His two feet were missing, so he didn't have to buy any shoes! (Master laughs.) Perhaps that was why he was so happy. Since that day, he no longer felt frustrated by having no money to buy shoes.

In fact, it is not necessary for everyone to be the same. Roses are beautiful, but if the whole world grew only roses, what do you think? Wouldn't it be very boring? (Answer: Yes) Therefore, some people do not like roses. You are all fond of roses, and say that roses are the best, but I do not like them! I like roses just as much as I like chrysanthemums. Sometimes, I also like the tiny flowers called "impatience," because they don't need much care. (Master and everyone laugh.) They are open everyday, even on rainy days. In cold of winter, or when a cold front prevails, they still stay open, and also in summer and autumn. You simply give them some water while singing, then they will grow. Even if you do not give it any water, it will still grow with a little rain. I only wish we could be like the "impatience" flowers! We don't have to be roses; they are very troublesome and delicate. They bloom only once or twice a year, and are full of thorns. Strange! (Master and everyone laugh.) Just because they are somewhat pretty, they becomes so arrogant; you will bleed if you touch them. Why should it be like this? Not everyone likes roses; they might be beautiful, but people may not like them.

The lotus flowers above are even more beautiful. Some are big and some are small; they look like transparent jade, very beautiful. It will start to fly when you step on it! Wherever you want to go, just think and it will take you there. You don't have to instruct it: "Hey! Driver...." (Master and everyone laugh.) You don't have to tell it, "I want to go to Taipei." Just step on it, and it knows whether you want to visit Amitabha Buddha or the Quan Yin Bodhisattva. It takes you to wherever you wish to go. In the superior worlds, the clouds function in the same way too. As soon as you get on one, it will take you away! When you want to stop, just think, or even before you think, it knows and will stop immediately. There is no troublesome traffic jams like with our taxis here! In the higher level worlds, nothing happens even when one cloud collides into another. There is no need for any traffic regulations. The clouds and the lotus flowers just fly around freely, very comfortable!

Practice more then you can ride on the lotus flowers and clouds. You will fall down if your karma is too heavy -- this I must warn you! (Master and everyone laugh.) It knows who is karmically too heavy; it knows where you want to go and when to stop; it also knows who is not entitled to the ride. These clouds and lotus flowers are not material things, so if we still have any material aspects inside, we cannot match their properties, and would fall down if we try to ride on them. (Applause and laughter.)

Pearls Of Wisdom

If we understand the Kingdom of God is within us, and if we have already tasted the nectar of this Kingdom, then probably we do not want to resist anything. If we can live here longer to serve God and fellow beings, let it be so. If we have to go because our time has come, or because someone else wants to terminate our life, let it be, because we have other kingdoms to continue to live in.

We are so great, so pervasive, and then we use that great wisdom just to understand a little bit of the worldly knowledge, for example, medical or legal knowledge or anything; and then we cling to that. That whole wisdom we use just to pay attention to this corner of knowledge. Therefore we forgot the whole. That's it. And we think that we are very great already, we are this doctor and that Ph.D..

The body of the Master exits for two reasons. First, for the disciples of the physical world to be able to see, as they couldn't see the light body of the Master. Second, the body for the Master is for sacrifice.

When we think that we are very good, or excellent, we might be cheated by the mind. The mind loves glory, praise, fantasy, and thinking that we are good. On the other side, the mind also degrades us. It might sink into depression and an inferiority complex, and cheat us of our glory. It goes two ways.

Sometimes, if I don't do my job, I also will get sick, because the energy is built up inside and not let out. Therefore, you don't worry about hard work. You should work and spend your energy.

One person makes a lot of difference. If you truly believe in your goodness, in what you are doing, you will influence other people. But if you don't believe, they will influence you. They'll try to make a strong person out of your personality. Whatever you believe is good, stick to it and don't let other people make you waver, because the good example in this world is rare. So make yourself a good example. Try your best in everything so that people will know that because you practice, you have become better. Then you really are being useful for society. That's how you prove. That's how you help other people. That's how we rescue the world from the great destruction that may be coming.

Glorify God by your own power of meditation and realization. That's the best prayer. That's the best glorification for God, the most significant prayer and the most significant job that you could ever do for God.

Our last moment's thought is very important. If all you think about is misery, you will go to hell. (Audience laughs.) If all you think about is Master, happiness and bliss when you are with the Master, you will be in Nirvana in no time. So that's the secret.

Learn Inward

Furthermore, why should we want him to do the same as we do? He leads a different life than ours. He only knows a method. We like this method, so we follow what he teaches. It is fine as long as we benefit from it! Why should we mind whether he practices the method or not.

It is just like those who build airplanes. They are not necessarily able to fly them. The workers who manufacture taxis are not necessarily licensed to drive. We can simply buy a car. Why bother to mind whether the people who made the car can drive or not. Is that right? (The audience replied, "Yes!") Pharmaceuticals invents many medicines for people to take, yet they did not necessarily have cancer! He should not have cancer, and he should not take the same kind of medicine.

We all have the same problem. After we have learned from a teacher, we keep watching how the teacher leads his life, and forget our purpose. We should know our purpose clearly. We came to learn how from him. It is fine when we have learned it. It does not matter what that person does. It is the same with anything.

An English teacher of course knows English. However, he does not have to, as we do, find an English speaking person to hold a conversation with everyday. He need not practice. If he does, he does. Whether he uses English or not is his business. It doesn't matter if he speaks Chinese everyday. It has nothing to do with us. As long as we can learn good English from him, then we learn from him. After we have learned it, we too can speak, write, and read English. That is his purpose, which is also ours. We should not mind whether the teacher has written a few books in English, whether he reads English books daily or not, whether he is in contact with English people everyday, or watches English television, etc. If we wanted to, we could do that ourselves. We shouldn't mind him. He can also marry a Chinese woman, talk in Chinese, or eat Chinese meals everyday. That has nothing to do with us at all.

If we know the root of all the problems by shining the torch of enlightenment on all corners of life, we tackle problems better; not in a positive way, but in a right way -- be it positive or negative. If we are only positive, we neglect another part of life which is very important. It's just like you only choose men, and you don't care about women. Can we do that? No! We can't. So, an enlightened person knows how to handle positive and negative; not to reject anything, but to make all things fully useful for life and the life after.

Master's Physical Body Is Much More Precious!

It is easy to see the manifestation body, but more difficult to see the real body, which only exists when an enlightened Master is living in this world. After the Master passes away, only the manifestation body is left. Of course, it is more desirable to see both the transformation body and the real one.

Ordinary enlightened beings have only manifestation bodies but not a real physical body, so they cannot help sentient beings. Likewise, Shakyamuni Buddha still has His manifestation body, but He cannot initiate us nor give us any help. Perhaps He can guide us to a living Master, who has a physical body, to get initiated.

Everyone loves the real body because it is rare! There are too many manifestation bodies the universe is full of manifestation bodies of enlightened beings, who are omnipresent. Physical bodies are rare - there are only a few. Only when the enlightened beings come, then sentient beings can see their real physical bodies.

To manifest in the physical form, a very complicated procedure is required, integrating many aspects in the universe -- causation, the merits of sentient beings, and the will of the Almighty. Therefore, it is more precious to see a real body than a transformation one.

However, my words are only for you; don't tell anyone else. (Laughter) I don't know why I have told you these things today, which normally shouldn't be told! Hearing this statement, people might think that you are very arrogant, praising the physical and belittling the manifestation body.

It is very difficult to see the real physical body, therefore Shakyamuni Buddha said that it is extremely difficult to see a real fully enlightened being. It is already so difficult to secure a physical body for oneself, much more so than to see a fully enlightened being in the body. This is why everyone loves to see the physical body of an enlightened being; it has always been the same since ancient times, not only in this era.

Should you observe someone who many people love to see, that person must be a spiritual practitioner who has attained the Truth. Regardless of what he looks like, whatever language he speaks, whether he gives lectures or doesn't speak, whether he touches you or gives you anything, if everyone still loves to see him, then he must have attained the Truth!

It was mentioned in Zhuang Tzu's book: one day, a disciple of Confucius asked him, "In a certain place, there is a certain person who is a lame hunchback, yet he has as many disciples as you do. In his daily life, he never says or teaches anything, but everyone wants to stay with him; men want to be his friends, and women want to be his wives. Everyone loves him. Would you explain why, master?"

Confucius replied that it was because that person had attained the Truth.

Great Ways To Prevent Mosquito Bites

We have to protect ourselves, because there are more mosquitoes in the world than we could ever kill! We could not kill them all even if we wanted to, so don't be "silly" ("kill" and "silly" in Chinese have a similar pronunciation.), we should just endeavor to protect ourselves. Cover the children with mosquito nets when they sleep, just like you would cover a wok, (Master and everyone laugh) and let them sleep inside. You can do the same for the bigger kids as well -- it is convenient.

You don't have to kill the mosquitoes, just use mosquito nets and window screens! Your window screens are most inviting -- with mesh holes so large that even I can go through. (Laughter) I heard that even Master's transformation body can go through those small holes, not to mention the mosquitoes.

Even when you have installed window screens, do not switch on the lights too early. Try to see things with your naked eyes or use a flashlight, and switch on the lights later in the evening when the mosquitoes have gone to sleep.

About five to seven in the evening, it is dinner time for the mosquitoes, (laughter) so there are plenty of them around. They disappear at about nine to ten! If possible, do not switch on the lights when they come out to eat. Switch on the outdoor lights instead of the indoors ones; so even if there were some mosquitoes inside, they would go for the light outside. Should you switch on the lights indoors, mosquitoes will come in even if there were originally none inside!

The Importance Of Embryo Education

During pregnancy, if you stimulate the baby's potentials, its nervous system will develop more. When the baby is born, it will be very intelligent - smarter than if you didn't sing or talk to it. I heard that if you put a piece of iron under your pillow, it helps too. I don't know why, but it seems to work. I just heard about it - you can give it a try. (Everyone laughs.) This, I can't guarantee. (Master and everyone laugh.) It's just hearsay.

Today's children are very smart. Do you know why? It's because most pregnant women watch TV and give the babies lots of information. A baby can absorb such information because its brain has started to develop. Therefore, whatever an expectant mother absorbs, the baby also absorbs. Don't think that just because the baby is separated by some flesh, it can't hear. Because of the intimate relationship between the mother and the baby, you can have a great influence on it. Whatever you eat and think can affect it. You should eat more food that nourishes the brain; food like spinach and other green-leaf vegetables. The baby will be born beautiful and intelligent.

Therefore, don't be jealous and say, "How strange! The babies always look more like my husband than me." This is only natural.

One Of Master's Stories When She Was In India

At one point, She was seriously ill when passing through Mrgadava (Deer Garden -- the place where Shakyamuni Buddha first preached the Truth). A group of lamas lived nearby, and one of them could speak some Chinese. However, Master didn't communicate with him verbally. That lama was a vegetarian; he pointed at a piece of beancurd to show that he was a vegetarian. He took good care of Master and gave Her medicine. Later when Master came to China, She continued to send gifts to this benevolent lama.

It was a tedious pilgrimage for Master then; She travelled fourth class by train, because She could not afford to travel second or third class. Later, when going on a pilgrimage to Bodhimanda (Shakyamuni Buddha's ashram), Master was again very ill.

April and May are the hottest months in India. Despite the hot weather, Master was extremely devoted and made the pilgrimage even though She was ill. When She eventually got too sick to walk anymore, the people in a Chinese Temple offered food to Her, but She couldn't take anything. The people in the temple cooked some porridge to feed Her with salty beancurd, then She gradually recovered.

When seeking the Truth in India, the food that Master mostly ate was Tibetan bread and butter mixed with Job's-tears powder, salt and water. (Wealthier people would use tea, but Master couldn't afford it, so She used water or got the water from the Ganges River.) Master didn't eat much then, but She looked wonderful.

Many great Masters gather at the Kumbha Mela (a grand spiritual fair held every twelve years in India). Though Master was wearing lay people clothes then, many people tried to bring Her home to take care of Her. After She changed into monastic robes, many people still wanted to care for Her and wanted to give offerings the same way as before.
