True Admiration Of The Moon You Are The Source Of My Inspiration A Lesson Of Fearlessness The Fantastic Nectar Water I Have Dreamt About The Zigzag Bridge Before!

    True Admiration Of The Moon

    By Fellow Initiate Chen, Formosa

Once, I meditated all through the night. During the early hours of the morning, I suddenly felt that I was pulled up by a very strong force, strong enough to move Heaven and Earth. I was rushing upwards in great speed. Immediately my soul was released from the bondage of my physical body. My consciousness entered a unprecedented and indescribable level. The whole process was like going through a "great explosion". In no time, all my thoughts and ideas totally disappeared. It was just like what the ancient Zen masters said, "Both Heaven and Earth were shattered", and there was "The absence of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind." (From the Heart Sutra)

I left everything behind, surpassed time and space, and entered a "state of holy consciousness" that seemed to have existed since the beginning of time and that was everlasting. At that time, my heart was filled with bliss and total understanding. I felt that I was in an ocean of love, that I had become one with it. I felt like a long lost 'sheep' that had finally returned to his mother's arms. The sense of security and of being moved was immeasurable.

Meanwhile, in the darkness, there appeared a circle of radiating light from which a very bright white light shone at its center. Although the white light was bright, it did not hurt my eyes, and it seemed to contain unlimited power. The many waves of overwhelming light not only lit up my heart, but also awakened the supreme wisdom that had laid dormant inside me for so long.

Blessed by this loving power and great light, I suddenly came to realize, as if I had just awakened from a dream, "Oh! Life on Earth is indeed like a dream, and everything is truly created by one's mind." I totally appreciated what is written in the Diamond Sutra, "One should not be attached to anything, and that is how one's original nature will appear".

I also completely understood what Bodhidharma said, "One cannot know Buddha if one searches with the mind." Having gone through so many searches, so many struggles and so many conflicts in my heart, I finally found the "Buddha-nature" that Buddha talked about, the "Holy Spirit" that Jesus spoke of, the "Master of Wisdom" in Islam and the "Supreme Consciousness" in the Bhagavad-Gita. I truly and absolutely understood that "All of Creation is one, and everyone indeed has Buddha-nature".

I did not know how long this experience lasted, but I eventually came out of samadhi.

Then I felt rejuvenated, extremely happy and at ease. My body was overflowing with a blissful and joyful vibration. My heart was free and filled with peace. When I looked into the mirror, I found that I was like a changed person. My face was filled with brightness, and my skin was as smooth and tender as a baby. The energy channels throughout my body were unblocked. I kept feeling a stream of energy rushing from below my stomach through my lower back and surging up to the top of my head. A 'hole' seemed to have opened in the top of my head. Whenever I focused my attention on that 'hole', I could feel a high level vibration from above continuously pouring in through it. My consciousness would also leave through there at any time to experience other "great explosions" and enter a tranquil and peaceful world.

But there was even more than this, I also discovered that I seemed to be able to use this 'hole' to breathe! There really was a complete transformation, spiritually as well as physically. What a "rebirth from bathing in the great flames!"

Not long afterwards, a retreat was held at Hsihu. It happened to be the Moon festival, so Master especially joined the disciples to have a good time and set off firecrackers. Being on duty as a guard at that time, I was fortunate enough to be near Master's side.

Suddenly, I heard Master exclaimed, "Oh! Everyone look! The moon is out!" Although I was on duty, I also followed Master and looked up to appreciate the moon. "Wow! What a round moon! Wow! It's beautiful!", came the praises from the crowd repeatedly.

However, my heart was elsewhere. I only felt that the scene before my eyes looked familiar, as if I had seen it before. Then I suddenly realized, "Oh! This was it! Is this not what I saw during meditation some time ago?" Although the moon was not as bright as the white light in my vision, it was definitely the same! Of that I had no doubt at all.

Since then, in the quiet time of the evenings, I like to look up at the starry sky and search. Whenever I see the bright moon again, an unforgettable feeling emerges in my heart once more. I always take the opportunity to remind myself not to cling to the outer world of illusion, and seek inwardly for the eternal Kingdom of God!

Oh! Master, Your disciple finally understands why people in ancient times wanted to admire the moon!

You Are The Source Of My Inspiration

By Fellow Initiate Ning, Heilongjiang, China

When my husband was taken to the hospital for a lumbar disorder, I gave him Master's book, "The Key of Immediate Enlightenment", to read. His condition was very serious, and he had been confined to the bed for a year and required constant bedside nursing.

He had acquired some Buddhist knowledge in the past, but never had he been in touch with teachings so systematic, scientific and wise. After seeing Master's portrait and studying Master's teachings, an idea emerged in his mind: he decided that, should he recover and be able to sit up, the first thing he would do is engrave seals out of Master's dignified portrait, the aphorisms in Her teachings, and the words of veneration toward Master. (The art of seal cutting is a branch of calligraphy passed down for thousands of years from ancient China.) Awed by Master's supreme teachings, and Her boundless mercy towards humankind, he decided to depict Master's magnificence and great teachings through the art of seal engraving.

Something incredible happened. My husband had been bedridden for a year, not responding to any medical treatment and could not even turn his body in bed. In only over a month after having read Master's teachings, he could sit up to take his meals. With a dramatic improvement in condition, he was discharged from hospital.

Having returned home, he kept thinking about getting up and starting to cut the seals. Every day, he would lie on the bed reading Master's books and magazines, and began to

design the draft plans of the seals. The urge in his heart was so overwhelming that he insisted to sit up. Unexpectedly, he picked up the carving knives, ground the stone material, and started cutting the seals for seven or eight hours continuously. His absolute devotion made it hard for him to put down the knives, and he would not rest until he was strongly urged to do so.

After one night's rest, his condition did not deteriorate the next day. Conversely, he felt much more relaxed, and his lumbar problem was gone! He could even ride the bicycle around everywhere, which totally bewildered our neighbours!

Since then, he miraculously improved every day. After over half a month's incessant hard work, the seals were finally finished! He was extremely delighted. He had stopped cutting seals for over a decade, theoretically, and considering all other factors, his skill should have been inept. However, the result was unbelievable. The creations showed that his skills in calligraphy, composition and cutting had improved tremendously compared to a decade before.

Throughout the creation, he felt he was being supported by an invisible power. Sometimes, he was so totally absorbed in the cutting that he was oblivious of anything going on around him. Master's teachings pervaded all his works. He forgot that he was a sick person, and did not feel any lumbar pain. Obviously, it was Master who had mercifully blessed him, and saved him from the curse of illness.

    A Lesson Of Fearlessness

Recorded by News group in U.K.

A practitioner family in the United Kingdom who lived in a rural area found it inconvenient to purchase air tickets to attend the retreat in Germany. One of the fellow sisters thus entrusted another female practitioner to purchase the tickets for her. It was arranged for everyone to meet on the day of the flight at the check-in counter, one hour before take-off, so as to board the plane together. But because of heavy traffic, the whole family of four were late. When they rushed to the check-in counter, it was only half an hour before take-off. Being too busy, the other fellow sister who had bought the tickets had forgotten about the meeting and had already boarded the plane by herself. When she remembered, it was too late to disembark.

The fellow sister asked the airline staff for help and were even ready to purchase new tickets. Unfortunately it was the last flight of the day to Hamburg. Perhaps it was her sincerity which moved the attendants at the service counter. They helped the whole family book for the earliest flight to Hamburg the next morning without requiring her to pay anything (yet according to airline regulations, if a passenger misses a flight the

ticket is not refunded). Apart from arranging the night's accommodation, the airline staff also helped to arrange transportation to the airport for early next morning. The charges involved were very minimal yet the accommodation was a five-star hotel.

Due to the fact that the original plan was for everyone to leave together, none of the family knew the exact venue of the retreat or where to report. The next day, however, they fortunately met another U.K. fellow practitioner who was also going to attend the three-day retreat. So they all went together and smoothly reached the venue.

Everything seemed to be arranged by God. When the whole family knew that they could not board the original flight, they were afraid that they would miss the chance to attend the three-day retreat. But they single-mindedly thought that no matter what the cost was they were determined to attend. They left everything in the hands of God. All at once their fearless hearts overcame everything. Thus, she had learned the lesson of fearlessness.

    The Fantastic Nectar Water

By Fellow Initiate Xiao, Taipei, Formosa

Winding through the Au Lac Garden in Hsihu Center and singing in a low sweet tone is the crystalline Nectar River, which bestows a calming and tranquillizing effect on people. The murmuring song of the river is nothing less than the music from heaven, capable of guiding one into samadhi with ease. An ultimate creation by Master, the Nectar River might be small but it gives boundless benefits, just like the tiny nectar vase of Quan Yin Bodhisattva; one drop from which can transform the rotten into the wonderful.

For the last few years, I had often meditated and rested by the Nectar River; drinking from it and savoring the beautiful tranquillity it brings. My soul sang in peerless rapture and elevation, but I was not thoughtful enough to take home some of the heavenly blessed water to share with my family. It was not until I heard that foreign initiates had been taking the nectar water home thousands of miles away, and that each drop of nectar manifests into a lotus that I was awakened abruptly and quickly took home a bottle of nectar for my family.

Then, fantastic things happened! My younger brother, who was fond of arguing, often suspicious and even had violent inclinations, drank a cup of nectar water. That night, he

dreamt about driving through a vast golden land without boundaries. Below him, the gold, giving way to the two sides, was soft and extremely bright while the sky was an unfathomable blue, yet bright and clear as crystal. Since then, my brother always weared a smile that was rarely found on him before. He accepted Master's teachings easily, and became a full vegetarian in just a few days. Looking totally like another person, he even studied the scriptures.

My mother used to be a very stubborn person. However, after drinking the nectar water, she began to love reading Master's News magazines. She delightfully accepted my brother's dramatic changes, and expressed that she would use vegetarian food offerings in her worship rituals.

Master! How deep my gratitude is for Your infinite merit, that converts people without using any human verbal effort. I have also realized the superlative state of a saint in "do without doing"! The Nectar River water is truly the heavenly water of the human world. And the Quan Yin Bodhisattva who spreads the nectar and the supreme dharma is none other than our lovable, merciful Supreme Master Ching Hai!

I Have Dreamt About The Zigzag Bridge Before!

By Fellow Initiate Xue, Kaohsiung, Formosa

When a liaison practitioner asked me to join the team to work at Hsihu for a few days, I did not investigate the details of the assignment. What I only knew was that we were going to build a zigzag bridge, so I brought some simple drafting equipment along with me, even though I wasn't sure if these were necessary. Just like that, I marched off to work in Hsihu Center for the first time.

The brother responsible for the task, conveyed to the work crew Master's instructions: build two gazebos on the lake, straw roofed and linked by walkways; the rails are to be made of natural wood; maintain a natural look as much as possible; build two fountains and three to four entrances; plant lotus flowers and water lilies to beautify the environment; endeavor not to harm the fish in the lake during the construction; do not pump the water out of the lake and do not bring the heavy cranes in. The deadline to complete the work was before the Mid-Autumn Three-Day Retreat.

Since I was young, I have been running a metalwork factory with my father and have undertaken many tasks. After repeated calculation and estimation, I found it impossible to accomplish the task on time, especially under these restrictions. I told the brother in charge that it was impossible to finish the work before the retreat. However, the brother said that we definitely could do it because Master had told him to go ahead with it: "Whatever Master has said can be accomplished."

Standing beside him, I felt a strong blessing power from Master, for the brother was not speaking with the power of an ordinary person or from his logic; he was being driven directly by Master's almighty power. Having received this tremendous assurance, I recalled Master's recent discourse: "In doing anything, we simply exert our greatest skill and effort, and not be concerned about success or failure. Just leave everything to God!" Therefore, I told myself, "Just give your best effort, and leave the rest to Master!"

Because of: not being allowed to pump out the lake water for fear of killing the fish; the lack of sufficient water equipment; not being able to use cranes; and the tight deadline not allowing us to finish one job after the other but forcing us to work simultaneously, we could not use conventional work procedures.

The depth of the mud layer and the depth of the water in the lake were uneven. Having no time to survey beforehand, we could only erect the first pillar, and determine its height before erecting the subsequent pillars. As each part of the construction was closely related with each other, it was impossible to speed up the work by using more labor to work simultaneously on different tasks.

During the construction, I could not help marvelling that only with our inner Master's guidance could we possibly accomplish a task of this nature, and under such difficult circumstances. With Master's power, it seemed that all units of the military force had joined our work. Fellow initiates from the 'Diver team' were dispatched, a small 'navy force' was deployed, and a small 'marine fleet' (improvised floating work platforms) was set up. With Master's blessing, all fellow initiates participating in the work fulfilled their duties and fought to the end. Miraculously, the whole construction was accomplished just before the retreat began.

When the construction was in progress, my mind was completely full of calculated figures for the Zigzag Bridge, even when I was meditating. I had virtually no time to think about other things. On the sixth day, the most vital part of the work had been completed; everything was basically fixed, and there was little chance for further alterations. I could meditate with a more relaxed mind that day.

After I had meditated for a short while, I suddenly recalled a forgotten vision. It was a dream I had about six months ago: Master was waiting for me to meet Her at a 'straw hut' on top of the water. The hut had no walls, and the roof was made of hay. From the shore, I had to walk on a zigzag bridge with many curves, which looked very primitive and natural, to reach Master's hut.

In the dream, I was thinking: "It is strange! Why would Master live in such a place waiting for me to see Her?"

When I entered the hut, Master did not use any words, but pulled me lightly towards the water. She told me to watch the small fish in the water. While pointing at the fish, with compassion in Her eyes, She told me these words filled with love: "These are also sentient beings."

When I woke up, I did not realize any special meaning. When the same scene appeared to me again, I realized instantly that the vision in my dream was exactly this Zigzag Bridge in front of me. It is amazing!

So Master had arranged everything long ago, and without leaving any clues. She was the real designer of the Zigzag Bridge who meticulously took care of each detail while ensuring that the sentient beings in the water were not harmed.

Through this experience, I can better realize Master's great wisdom, love, patience, consideration, and Her omnipresent almighty power. On my spiritual path, I have received many blessings and much encouragement from Master, which further affirmed my awed statement which I exclaimed when I first saw Master's lecture video on Channel Four: "She is the One! She is the great enlightened Master that I have been seeking for decades!"

    Between Master And Disciples

Unconditional Love How I Wish That Our Hearts Were Joined

    Unconditional Love

By Fellow Initiate Gschwilm, Munich, Germany (Originally In English)

Your embrace and handshake in Nice was very precious to me. When I think back to them I am so touched that I almost want to cry.

In Milan, Italy, I was on the work team for the Celestial Fashion Show, and although I did my best, I almost failed at several important organizational tasks. At that time, I was helping to translate Italian, but I was very nervous and lost my concentration, so I often did a poor job. Afterwards I felt ashamed about this for a long time, and deeply repented having caused discomfort to Master.

When we are used to the worldly way of working, we expect that when we do a bad job we will be scolded or punished or not be loved anymore; at least I do. But Master taught me that the heavenly way of working is very different. Mistakes are really chances for us to learn and make us try harder.

When Master embraced me in Nice I felt that She did not even think about whether I was good or not - I just felt Her unconditional love that asks for nothing and just soothes and heals and brings joy and peace to everyone. Master might scold me sometimes, but She will always love me - love me unconditionally, no matter what I do, no matter if I learn my lessons slowly or quickly. God is really forgiveness: It is us who can not forgive ourselves.

During the group meditation in Nice, France, I was one of the interpreters, and although I translated for many hours I was not tired at all when I got home, but very happy. During the next few days I was very happy as well. I also felt very energized and inspired. I had many ideas about how to spread Master's teachings and promote vegetarianism in Europe. Actually, it is a great blessing having the chance to work for Master; no other work can ever be so rewarding!

I thank God Almighty and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for having such a compassionate and loving Master!

    Aphorisms

    By Supreme Master Ching Hai

If everyone practices the Quan Yin Method, they will be so happy, contented, and satisfied that there will be no more war, no need for anything. Because the problem is taken care of from the root.

All the suffering will end the moment we know our true selves. Even though we sometimes still feel affected by the suffering of other people, we ourselves do not feel such a deep suffering like before enlightenment.

The person is only habit and thought collected life after life. We are not that person. We are never separated. We are wisdom, we are love. These things are all over the universe. How can it be separated by just a layer of skin?

Group meditation will help you with more power to overcome obstacles very quickly. So most of the problems you have are self-created. After initiation, if you follow the precepts, if you follow the pure vegetarian diet, and if you go to group meditation, you should have no problems whatsoever.

    Open Space

Becoming Part Of The Galactic Civilization

    By Indiana News Group, U.S.A.

All kinds of prophecies tell us that planet Earth and the human race will face a grave crisis in these next two years. Merit derived from spiritual practice is the only power that can counteract the negative force, and elevate the spiritual level of humans. When an enlightened master descends to Earth, the whole solar system rises to a higher level in the universe.

A new book recently published in the United States entitled "You are Becoming a Galactic Human", reveals many shocking facts that are said to be introduced by extraterrestrials sent by the Galactic Federation. For example, our solar system is moving toward a photon belt in our galaxy. Going through the photon belt, we will enter the fifth dimensional space. This is a spectacular event which can only be successfully accomplished with joint efforts of spiritual masters, star beings, and the Earth inhabitants ourselves.

Through this process, there will be drastic

changes in the electromagnetic field of the solar system, in our human cellular structures, bodies, and level of consciousness. Only through elevating the spiritual level of the human race, and increasing the positive energy on the planet, can we go through this drastic change safely, and stride into a new era of the universe -- the Golden Age.

We are living in a critical moment when the page of a thousand years of history is about to be turned. Our mission is to find an enlightened master, practice the Quan Yin Method of meditation, experience this giant transformation rarely encountered in many eons, and help everyone on Earth to rise to a superior level of civilization. We fellow practitioners must maintain a strong faith in the Truth, grasp this final opportunity, treasure each divine opportunity to see Master and to go to retreats, and ultimately accomplish our mission in this life. Later, in the Heavenly Kingdom, we shall definitely savour the eternal ecstasy with Master!

    Pearls Of Wisdom

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai at Tien Shan Center in Hong Kong

    (Originally in Chinese)

In times of emergency we can discover many ways to protect ourselves or others. But then, why wait till an emergency before we do that? If we first think, we will not encounter that kind of situation! But it is understandable if an emergency is unavoidable. There is nothing wrong with us; our brains are not out of order. Why don't we use them? There must be a way! There must be a way! Day by day we can solve those so-called unsolvable problems. There is nothing that cannot be solved. Right? Besides, because we practice, circumstances will become better. It will naturally improve.

Because I have many disciples, and everyone asks for different things, that's, perhaps, why I have to be good in all aspects. This is how the situation is. It is not that I was any better than you in the beginning. Do you understand? It is because I want myself to be good. When I face a situation, I work out a way to deal with it. Then I become good! Therefore, you too can do it. Do not be beaten by obstacles or suffering. Perhaps we don't know how to react today; we have been beaten and we are in shock a little bit. Then, we should continue tomorrow. One day we will be okay!

Why is it that life is not very good for most of the people in this world? It is because they do not have any ideas or their ideas are not right. Some want to be a boss, but they don't know how to be one so their business is not good. It is all because they do not know how to make decisions. Some people do not like to decide for themselves. They don't trust themselves. All through their lives they depend on other people. Neither of these cases is good. Do you understand? We have to find a solution. If the situation is like this, we shall change it whenever we can think of a way. If we have tried our best and still cannot change it, then we shall see. We still need to put in our best effort. Otherwise, this world will become worse and worse. If even spiritual practitioners cannot come out with solutions to correct a situation, then what can other people do?

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai at a Group Meditation in Seoul, Korea.

    (Originally in English)

After we know the Quan Yin Method, we regain the universe. And our soul knows that now we regain it. So, it's satisfied. That's why after practicing the Quan Yin Method, we do not feel like wanting material things so much. And after practicing some more, we don't even care to become Buddha or become God. Because inside we know we are Buddha, we're God. The wisdom, the real self knows, not the brain, but the real master inside. Therefore we become happier and more content. So, that's the secret.

If we know we are virtuous people, God-loving people, then we believe that God will arrange everything for us according to our worthiness. So we don't have to ask for anything. But because sometimes our level is not so high, so we say we pray for something, or we pray for somebody else, not for ourselves, hoping that our sincerity will also help them to awaken themselves and help themselves.

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai at San Di Men in Pingtung, Formosa

    (Originally in English)

Remember that we are always together. We are cheated by the concept of time and space, that's all. Actually the space is also together, you can not separate space. So, we are in the same space even. So, what is the problem? Time is only a kind of illusion. When you sleep you don't know time. And when you are happy, time flows very fast. When you are miserable, time drags very slowly. Why? It's all conception, preconception, it's all an illusion.

The only obstacle, the greatest obstacle in our life is our own ignorance. When we are too proud of our achievement of position, or intellectual garbage, we are also classified as ignorance. Ignorance is the cause of everything, understand? If we are enlightened, we don't think that way. So, make sure you check your mental health, and go over your eating habits, thinking habits, thinking diet, and reacting diet. Make sure nothing is too extreme. Too much mental exercise, too much intellectual gymnastics also exhausts you; and you have no more energy for enlightenment.

Further Report On Relief To Flood Disaster Areas In

Liaoning, Jilin And Anhui In Mainland China

Reports Compiled By The Relief Team In Mainland China

Flood disasters hit many provinces in mainland China, wave after wave, which gravely affected the livelihood of the people. The merciful Master has been compassionately directing the relief team to render the quickest and most practical aid to the disaster victims. As implored by the victims, She has further donated 163,400 RMB yuan to the relief fund.

Many of our fellow practitioners in Japan are overseas students from China, so they were anxiously hoping to help their compatriots in need. Knowing that Master had already allotted money, and assigned a relief team to launch a series of relief operations, they immediately responded by raising a contribution of 100,000 Japanese Yen (8,600 RMB yuan). Their contribution, together with HK$108,000 (115,500 RMB yuan) from the Hong Kong fellow practitioners, amounted to a total of 287,500 RMB yuan, and has been taken by fellow practitioners from Hong Kong to the relief team in China, who are to supporting the ongoing relief work.

Since the middle of August, fellow practitioners from Shenyang and Anshan in Liaoning province, and Changchun and Jilin city in Jilin province, as instructed by Master and with the company of a Quan Yin messenger, have helped sixty disaster-stricken villages in Liaozhong and Haicheng in Liaoning province, and Huadian city and Panshi county in Jilin province. The total number of families helped was 10,097 (about 50,485 people) with the distribution of a total of 67,100 jin (2 jin 1 kg) of rice; 14,020 jin of dry noodles; 13,940 jin of biscuits; 3,500 jin of potatoes; 19,060 bags of instant vegetarian food; 450 mosquito nets; over ten types of emergency medical supplies worth 12,793 RMB yuan; 217 blankets; 150 pieces of rain cloth; and over 2,000 pieces of old clothing.

Besides this, not long after the flood-water subsided, fellow practitioners from Changchun and Jilin cities went into the disaster areas again to distribute rice, noodles, blankets, fresh vegetables, daily necessities and so on. The total aid to the two provinces amounted to 242,094 RMB yuan (Liaoning 191,593.50 RMB yuan and Jilin 50,500.50 RMB yuan). The relief materials contributed by the fellow practitioners from Changchun and Jilin cities in Jilin province totalled 30,000 RMB yuan.

The disaster relief activities were centered around Anshan city. During the relief process in Liaoning, fellow practitioners from Anshan also met with Lang Ying, the Deputy Mayor of Anshan city. After Deputy Mayor Lang heard about Master's relief activities to the various flood disaster areas on the mainland this year, he was very moved.

While working in disaster areas in Jilin, the most remote place we reached was Yaojia village, a severely affected area of Panshi town, more than 200 kilometers from Jilin city. To save time, fellow practitioners from Jilin and Changchun started to load the relief materials onto trucks before 5:00 am. When the second phase of relief activities in Jilin province began, the climate in the Northeast had turned cool. As a result, cold weather materials were needed most. Thus the relief team had blankets and rice sent to the disaster areas.

At the end of August, fellow practitioners from Changchun and Jilin cities in Jilin province, went for the second time to the severely affected flood disaster areas of Huadian, Tonghua, Beishan, Dehui, Huinan and others to help the victims. A total of 4,100 jin of rice was distributed. The areas were very remote and very mountainous. Many areas required more than ten hours of journeying by car.

The disaster victims lived in very vastly diverse areas. To reach some areas, we needed to walk for several hours. But fellow practitioners were not afraid of difficulties. While they were distributing rice to the victims, they also disseminated the news of Master's love for them. The disaster victims received the most precious spiritual relief of all in this world and all felt very moved about the kindness of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who are trying to rescue all sentient beings.

When we reached the severely affected area of Dongweizi village near Huadian city, the village was still besieged by the flood-water and many houses had collapsed. At the time, the relief team only knew that 156 peasant families lived there. Only after having finished distributing the various kinds of relief materials, did we realized that there were 41 more fishing families also affected.

Two days later, fellow practitioners from Jilin city had 1,230 jin of rice ready and went to Dongweizi village again. When they arrived at the home of the village Chief, they discovered that his wife and some villagers were reading Master's books. Even illiterate villagers could not bear to part with the book. The villagers were pointing at Master's picture and told the village Chief, "Material things do not matter to us. Please lead us to learn from this Master!"

When the fishermen in Dongweizi village saw our fellow practitioners returning to distribute disaster relief rice, they were moved and said, "When you were giving rice to other villagers, it was just like giving to us. To be able to receive one of Master's sample booklets is enough."

Also, in the heavily affected area in Anhui Province, over a dozen villages in Anpin, Tong Ning County, were all devastated. The situation there was the most serious in the province. Guided by enthusiastic villagers, the relief team took a boat to the devastated area. As the boat embarked, the fellow practitioners climbed to the top of the dam and found that the whole village was immersed by the flood. No houses could be seen; only a few protruding chimneys dotted the water's surface.

The residents were living in tents pitched on the top of the dam. With the cooperation of the village Chief, the relief team quickly calculated the number of households affected. Having found out the most urgently needed items, they promptly went to purchase rice and medicine, and then delivered them with the old clothes given by people from various places.

    Thoughts From Disaster Relief Activities

    By Fellow Initiate Chi, Macao

After living for thirty years I did something that I never even dreamed that I would ever do - participate in disaster relief activities to convey God's boundless love to disaster victims.

When one bag after another of snow white rice was delivered into the hands of the villagers in the disaster affected area, and when photographs of Master came before their eyes, the entire village was overflowing with sounds of joy and laughter. It was bathed in God's omnipresent love and beauty. I will never forget that scene as long as I live!

I used to be a very lazy person. I thought that I was doing great, and had very little consideration for others. Having made quite a large amount of money in my business, I wilfully indulged in wine and socializing. I never thought of the people who were suffering in wars, disasters or famines and who desperately need the help, concern and love of others. When I occasionally saw these kinds of scenes on television, I merely felt pity for those people, and never thought that their lives bore any relation to mine. I thought that their lives and mine were entirely two different matters.

As my soul began to wake up, and when the time was ripe, I received initiation from Master and started a brand new life. Our great Master teaches us by using real life examples, and makes us understand that life is ephemeral. Lesson after lesson made me appreciate that all of creation is interrelated. With Her loving power, which is impossible to describe with words, Master blesses and shows me how to perceive and learn.

From this experience I have come to understand that a person practices spirituality not only to benefit themselves, but more importantly to benefit other sentient beings. I realise that the deeds from my old way of life need to be cleansed through earnest practice, and that my behaviour and what is around me are not two separate matters. Only when we have generated enough love to give to others and to help them, can we truly make progress on our spiritual path!

Master, I have not lived the past thirty odd years fruitlessly because I have found You, and You give me eternal love and blessings. There are still many things that I could not think of doing, even in my dreams. I beseech You to give me more opportunities to do work for You, thus erasing some of the very deep guilt caused by my past behaviour, and to use Your boundless love to take me Home soon!

By the way, I would like to tell everyone that one never gets tired when doing Master's work!

Aiding The Drought And Flood Disasters In Korea

This year, Korea was severely inflicted by drought and flood disasters, about which King Sihanouk of Cambodia was much concerned. His Majesty wrote a consolation letter to the Korean Government, and mentioned that the Supreme Master Ching Hai was also concerned about the situation, and might be able to offer a contribution. The President of Korea immediately instructed his Ambassador in Cambodia to handle the matter. On September 20, at the Korean Embassy in Cambodia, as arranged by the King of Cambodia, representatives of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association presented a contribution of US$200,000 to the Ambassador of Korea to send back to his country for disaster relief. The Ambassador signed the receipt on the spot, and everyone took a photograph together. The Cambodian King's Secretary, Sour Pheng, and Mr. Ke Seroeun, Minister of the Royal Palace, were present that day.

    Selected Questions And Answers

When You See The Light ...

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai in Costa Rica

    May 31, 1991
    (Originally in English)

Q: When I saw the light, the light was so big. And then I stopped to say, "Not yet, not yet." And I came back.

(Master says lovingly) Stupid, you will come back in time, don't resist. Just take you up for a while and bring you back again. If you resist, you never go up.

Q: I didn't want to go after to you. I'm afraid a lot.

You must. You should go high and come back. It takes only a few minutes or half an hour to come back again. But everyone's afraid like that. They want to go to heaven, but they say, "Oh, no, no, I'm afraid, nothing there." They are afraid to die. And when the light takes them up, they say, "No, no, no, not yet! I am not a saint." You never know if you will die tomorrow and no chance. Yeah, we always have the big ego to resist the Master's instruction and help. That always makes our progress very slow. That's true. If you always let go, you become Buddha in no time. When you go with the light or sound, you will come back. You die only for a little while.

    Q: But I don't have that elvation.

It's your ego who talks. How do you know better than I? If the Master thinks you are not worthy, then the Master will not take you. Okay? Let your inner Master decide. Why argue? If you think a Master is good for you, then you just have to listen. Okay?

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai At A Group Meditation In Hawaii U.S.A.

    Sep 4, 1994
    (Originally in English)

Q: Dear Master, do You think that there will ever be a day when we could all just go back home and not have to deal with these earthly issues and matters?

    Oh! definitely, we'll go home.

Q: I mean all of us!

All of us! No one will be left behind. No second coming for you. (Master and everyone laugh). Unless you want it so badly beause a beautiful woman is left behind or something like that. Because this time is a very bad period for our world and so the Master's power decides that we suffer enough. So, if we just make a little effort, just a little sincerity and the Master will embrace us and disregard everything. Because you can't. (Master sighs) To be honest, you can't meditate in this world. (Master and everyone laugh) You really can't. So whatever we can meditate, or whatever the

outcome, truly comes from the grace of the Master, I mean the Master power, I don't mean this person. So anyhow, during the night, the Master will take us to different levels where it's safer and better. In the day, we are too busy. Our mind is running against it, the spiritual power, so we have to do it quickly this time. If you keep to the precepts and meditate and do group meditation you'll see yourself improve so fast that you could not imagine. When you look back at yourself it's like somebody else behind there, yes! Really, and they'll tell you that... the people who experience that. I don't tell this because I know it from books, but it's from experience myself and the living examples of your brothers and sisters. It's nice to see your family members (fellow initiates) once a week, no? It's good, but not many people can keep up, but it is very beneficial to them, and if you could not go to group meditation or if you don't want to, for any reason, please meditate at home. And there's no must for anything, it's just that it's beneficial to you. Whatever I tell you is good for you only. No forbidden items! You keep it, it's good for you. Or if you don't keep it, well, you'll experience some setbacks or some obstructions and then you know why.

Q: Master, I was thinking. Because how you said don't kill sentient beings, does that include pests, bugs, termites and mosquitoes?

Well, we have to do what we need for the environmental care. But then, we have to pay for that. But they are small bugs. They are not so big, bigger of life, then we meditate for them, and they will be all right. The important thing is not the act of killing. The most important thing is that the violence in your heart that must be terminated, you know what I mean? Some people, they don't kill actually with their hands but they kill with their thoughts. That is more important than even the act of killing. So what we try to minimize is the violence in our heart, the tendency to want to destroy other beings. But if we have to do it for environmental hygiene, we must do it. And pray for these in our meditation. But it is best when we avoid it. Like we keep our place very clean, so that the ants and other insects won't come around. And if you spray around so that they will leave, they will not die. There are some ways to avoid not to kill. You have to take care of that. The less killing, the better, even the small insects! But sometimes they are too harmful for the children and babies, then the mother has to do it. Because after all, human beings... human life is more precious. We don't do it because we are bad or we are malicious. It's just the situation.

Master Cut The Ribbons For The New Renovations Of Hsihu

Hsihu was back to its quietness after the Mid-Autumn Three-Day Retreat, until one day when the sounds of gongs and drums echoed, and the place was overwhelmed with a joyful atmosphere. Supreme Master Ching Hai was to cut the ribbons at the ceremony celebrating several newly finished renovations.

Master, in bright colored clothes and a broad-brimmed hat, greatly vivified the autumn afternoon. Amid the applause and music, She dance and strolled; pretty and charming as She greeted residents lined along the way.

Through the joint efforts of fellow practitioners, the renovations, which were instructed by Master, were completed in quick succession before the Mid-Autumn Three-Day Retreat. Fellow initiates from overseas and Formosa who attended the retreat marvelled at the new beautiful scenes in Hsihu. They deeply thanked Master for Her consideration in making Hsihu a more beautiful and spacious environment for meditation and other activities. Besides appreciating the external beauty, fellow initiates practiced more earnestly to reach their inner beauty and to elevate their spirituality in order to be worthy of Master's meticulous love.

The International Garden, half way up the hill, is the place for Master to meet guests. Inside, there is a red tiled roof log cabin with large doors and windows on both sides. The cabin is bright and cozy and the sun shines through all day long. All kinds of blossoming flowers and chirping birds add more beauty to the garden.

After cutting the ribbon to the garden, Master blessed it to be everlasting and serviceable for the whole universe and to make all be happy forever. Later, when Master sat on a traditional imperial style throne, all the resident disciples rushed to prostrate to the holy Emperor Master with all the great courtesy of a royal court. Master responded accordingly to the royal courtesy from the disciples by joking, "Speak up now, or the office will be closed. " The hearty laughter echoed in the garden. Even the grass and flowers seemed to celebrate this long expected moment.

The old meditation hall also took on a resplendent and magnificent new look. Displaying Master's reproduced paintings, Longevity lamps, books, cassettes and video tapes and other publications, it's an important place for fellow initiates and guests to get their spiritual food during Sunday group meditation gatherings.

Master cut the red silk ribbon to the cheers of people. "God bless the place to be safe! The world, to be peaceful! All will be liberated, but this hall shall remain long". Master's humorous words were followed by warm applause.

The Book Circulation department, the kitchen, the dining hall, the maintenance area, the children's corner all took on a fresh new look. Master happily inspected each place with satisfaction and cut one ribbon for each place, one by one. She said that all of these efforts should be offered to God and She blessed everyone saying, "Eat well, drink well, live long. Be beneficial to others and yourself. Be thankful to God. Everything here is good. The renovations are long-lasting as well as our love."

The main entrance with the elegant streamline posts are painted in fresh, mild colors. To the fellow initiates, it is a home door that they are most eager to come in. Master blessed this door of great importance as if it were the entrance of a country with, "Guard carefully; let pass the good and keep away the bad".

By the time everyone reached the new park beside the Dragon Boat Lake and the ancient style zigzag bridge winding through the center of the lake, dusk was approaching. The lake looks charming with the rosy clouds at dusk reflecting upon the water. People sat under the pavilion or beside grass enjoying the blessed food offered to God. As Master put it, "They are to be offered to God and to us, Hiers children".

Master considerately instructed that light background music be played. Soon disciples were all intoxicated by the melody flowing in the breeze. Master remarked that the bamboo dancing in the wind looked very beautiful. She asked everyone to enjoy it together. It's whirling moves seemed to express sentimental appreciation to Master's holy love. A wonderful day of celebration passed in the perfect harmony of love between Master and disciples.

A Heart Warming Trip Of Spreading The Truth

    - An Invitation To Give A Speech In The Chiayi Women's Prison

It is not exaggerating to say that a prison is a place where laughter is rare. However, this trip to spread the Truth at the Chiayi Women's Prison was filled with the roaring laughter of several hundred inmates. Fellow practitioners took to the inmates Master's overwhelming love and concern, which immersed the whole venue in an ocean of love and bliss.

To make this prison preaching assignment a successful one, the Chiayi fellow initiates reached a unanimous agreement to meditate every day at the local Center. As permitted by their family situations, several practitioners even held a retreat and prayed for a few days.

Early on the day of the visit, working members assembled at the home of the liaison practitioner. They worked with oneness of mind, each executing their assigned duties. Some of them helped with transporting the decorations for the venue, others prepared exquisite meals and snacks for the inmates to enjoy. In perfect harmony, they accomplished their jobs promptly and reached the prison punctually.

When a Prison Officer came out to count the number of visitors, he was amazed to find that so many people had come. The liaison practitioner explained that many fellow practitioners were eager to participate in this meaningful activity. The Prison Officer was touched.

Therefore, in cheerful spirit, practitioners arrived at the lecture venue where the inmates were already waiting. After a brief introduction by the M.C., the fellow brother giving the lecture went on stage to tell the story of how he previously wallowed in criminal circles, and how the Buddha eventually appeared to him and directed him to find an enlightened master. He also talked about some fantastic stories encountered on his spiritual path after following Master. His speech was lively and amusing, so inmates often roared with laughter.

After that, fellow practitioners distributed Master's sample booklets and News magazines to each inmate, together with a rich portion of a delicious meal. Then, they started teaching the inmates to sing holy songs. The distribution went on as they sang, "Tears of the Holy Mother". The place was filled with bliss, and did not look like a prison at all.

When fellow initiates asked whether anyone wanted Master's photos, everyone eagerly shouted, "I do! I want them!" It seemed that everyone had raised their hand, asking for the photos. Joy and laughter masked the faces of the inmates, and the whole place was flooded with indescribable bliss and warmth.

All the initiates who participated in this assignment were very happy, and were grateful for Master's omnipresent power, which blessed them and made this preaching trip a great success.

After the lecture, a fellow brother who is a secondary school teacher said, "When I was listening attentively to the lecture in the venue, suddenly I noticed there was a halo above each of the fellow initiates who came to help with the work, just like the halo we usually see above the heads of saints. When everyone was singing the holy songs, a great light appeared on stage, and then went down and spread to each corner of the venue. A vibratory current of love made it hard for me to hold back my tears." For several days after the trip to the prison, this brother excitedly told whoever he met that he was always fully charged with bliss whenever he meditated. *Note: Appendix see page 13.

The Taoyuan group spent five years trying to buy a piece of land for the new Center, but without any success. Just when the number of new initiates quickly grew and the hired venue was no longer big enough, a miracle occurred. They succeeded in buying a piece of land next to the downtown area of Chungli, and at a much cheaper price than the market value.

    Enlightenment Comes With Work

Fellow practitioners immediately volunteered to join the construction work, reinforced by many initiates who had professional skills. Within a hundred working days, the main hall, publication circulation office, children's room, recreation ground, kitchen and gardens sprouted up from the vast wasteland of grass and reeds.

Each initiate who participated in the work was equipped with the 'magical power' imparted by Master - concentration and a serious attitude to learn. In a short time, they learnt work which was totally unfamiliar to them, and even excelled the professional fellow practitioners. The more work they participated in, the greater was the enlightenment that they derived. Therefore, they deeply recognized the almighty wisdom power that Master has helped them open from within is truly omnipotent.

Making use of the summer vacation, a fellow sister came to help at the Center's kitchen, where delicious meals were prepared for the working members every day. She had a deep apprehension: despite very detailed plans, it was not certain that she could buy the required food at the market. However, acting according to her own inspiration and prevailing circumstances, the outcome was always perfect. Subsequently, she could better utilize her latent abilities in creating unique dishes, which very often met the exact demand of the fellow practitioners on that day.

Master Is Always The Chief Engineer Behind The Scene

Whenever a new task is being launched, Master always makes fantastic arrangements for some relevant professionals to appear at the right time. Furthermore, the number of professionals is always just enough for the job. It is clear to the fellow practitioners that Master is the chief engineer behind the scenes coordinating everyone. Each time when set-backs or obstacles are encountered in the work, some timely and professional opinions will always be available. During these discussions, Master always gives them the best inspiration, helping them to accomplish every job perfectly and efficiently.

The boss of a steel-plate company had seen Master's videos on Channel Four, and coincidentally he was helping with the construction of the local Center this time. Deterred by thunderstorms and rain for several days in succession, progress of the work was behind schedule.

One afternoon, he decided to stay behind so that he could resume the work immediately when the rain stopped, because he firmly believed that Master would give him enough time to finish it. Eventually, the rain completely stopped, so everyone grabbed hold of the opportunity and worked at full speed. Just as they had laid the last piece of steel plate, the rain poured down again.

    Maintain Good Relationships With
The Neighbours While Savouring The Sweet Result

On one holiday, environment-cleaning day, more than a hundred fellow practitioners came to tidy up their 'new home', the new Taoyuan Center, and cleaned the vicinity as well. Fellow initiates, including males, females, the elderly and children, swept and cleaned the streets. Some of them cut the obtrusive tree branches and some picked up litter. In a short time, the streets assumed a new clean look. Neighbours came later to express their gratitude. Fellow practitioners told them it was Master's teachings of love that brought such a pleasant and blissful atmosphere.

    A Considerate Innovation

In the past, when signing-in at the group meditation sessions, fellow practitioners had to fish out their names amid a crowded list of names and numbers. This was a difficult task for illiterate or elderly fellows whose eyesight is bad. Even if they managed to find their names, they often marked the wrong date. However, it is all different now; only a small table and a digital code reading machine are required, saving time and space, while improving accuracy. The tiny digital code reading machine can store thousands of bytes of data, saving the heavy record papers and conforming with 'green' ideals.

The new method can also accurately handle the enrollment and screening process for retreats in a very short time. All the complicated problems of the past are all solved by using this digital code reading machine.

Spreading Supreme Master Ching Hai's Teaching At Bodh Ashram

The teachings of Supreme Master Ching Hai were introduced amidst the swarming mass of tourists and pilgrims busy venerating the Bodh Ashram where Shakyamuni Buddha attained enlightenment.

When many of the tourists and pilgrims saw the beautiful pictures of Master, they simultaneously asked who She was. Tour guides even brought tourists to enquire about Master's sample booklet. A curious atmosphere developed and people wanted to know exactly what Master taught. How different was She from others who taught enlightenment? How could She confer immediate enlightenment?

A video show was arranged by fellow initiates at a local monastery; they chose "The Mystery Of The World Beyond," Master's lecture at the United Nations. The audience consisted of an Australian Buddhist monk, an Indian Catholic priest, some western pilgrims, and Indians. Master's talk was highly appreciated and everyone laughed at Her jokes. People hoped to read Master's books for further study and reference.

Hong Kong Food Fair: New Style Vegetarian Food

The Food Fair is the most popular among all of Hong Kong's grand fairs. This year, the Hong Kong Vegetarian House used the slogans, 'Total vegetarian - the first step to compassion and giving alms', and 'Total vegetarian - the first step to saving Earth'. The name of 'Supreme Master Ching Hai' on the banners brightened the whole venue.

Fellow practitioners especially chose Master's talk in the United States called, 'Appreciating Life Begins from Enlightenment' to be distributed together with the sample booklets to those people with affinities with Master. Although there was a typhoon during the fair, the crowd was still very large. Fellow practitioners had to continuously transport additional sample booklets to the venue so as to have enough to distribute to the tens of thousands of people striving to get one.

The exquisitely printed leaflets gave a concise introduction of the Quan Yin Method, initiation, the Convenient Method and information about the Hong Kong Center. In the section about vegetarianism, it also introduced the Vegetarian House and the free vegetarian cooking classes. After the fair, many people interested in the various activities called the Center to obtain further information.

The event was held close to the Mid-Autumn Festival. The vegetarian egg yolk moon cake promoted by the Vegetarian House was supplied for the occasion. It was widely welcomed at the venue and was sold out very quickly. Various kinds of healthy vegetarian food and new style vegetarian dishes like vegetarian lobster, vegetarian egg yolk and so on, were displayed by a company of fellow practitioner's. The food received a variety of good reviews. 'Hong Kong Today', the popular Hong Kong TV news program came especially to cover the event. The program introduced the benefits of being vegetarian and the method of making vegetarian moon cakes.

    The Banquet Of Spiritual Food

Academics of Singapore recently raised up a heat wave. Reputable publishers from all over the world gathered together at Singapore's largest exhibition center - the World Trade Center - for the International Books Fair. This year's fair was the largest ever. It attracted tens of thousands of people daily and it injected fruitful, spiritual food into the rich, material life of Singapore.

Due to the blessing of Master, fellow practitioners fortunately obtained a very spacious stall at one corner of the fair. Besides displaying books, Master's exquisite and unequalled artistic works also appeared for the eyes of the public. The book shelves were positioned such that they could be moved easily according to the degree of crowd congestion. Tables and chairs were also thoughtfully placed to let many people who were reluctant to leave enjoy spiritual meals in comfort.

Although the inner level of practice is invisible to the eyes, the respect for Master could be seen in facial expressions. The person in charge of the Raddha Soami stall, immediately brought over a cart full of authentic Indian nan bread when he learnt that we were the disciples of Supreme Master Ching Hai. The next day, he again warmly brought over various kinds of vegetarian food. It amply showed the open-minded approach of spiritual practitioners.

When our fellow practitioners passed by the stall of a very famous Yoga practitioner, the person in charge told fellow practitioners that they were a meditation organization. When fellow practitioners said that our Guru was Supreme Master Ching Hai, she immediately replied in a very respectful tone, "I know Her", and indicated that she had already visited Master's stall.

The manager of a Sri Lankan book store repeatedly came to visit our stall. He was yearning for a chance to meet Master in order to further resolve his problems with practice. But because of work commitments, he had to return to his country when the fair was over. Thus he left his address in Sri Lanka with us so he could receive Master's news magazine.

After coming into initial contact with Master's teachings, many people were yearning to understand more deeply the Truth of life and the true nature of the universe. They all came to the Center with their friends and families to buy books and to discuss their doubts. Before the book fair was over, there were scores of people registering to learn the Convenient Method. One of them who had learned a meditation method similar to the Quan Yin Method and had practiced for more than ten years, still remained at the initial level. But when she learned that the would-be initiates who had just started to practice the Convenient Method were having very high level experiences and were enjoying bliss daily, it made her very envious indeed.

There was one traditional Chinese medicine doctor from mainland China who had heard of Master and the Quan Yin Method on the mainland. He also possessed some of Master's books and had been a vegetarian for a long time. He yearned to practice but did not know how to contact us. The Heavenly Lord does not disappoint those who strive. Unexpectedly it was a joyous meeting at the fair. He immediately bought many books to prepare for further, deeper studies.

Sharing Master's Wisdom and Love at The International Book Exhibition

Under the watchful eyes of the public, the annual international book exhibition in Malaysia raised its curtains. It was a very meaningful event, and many renowned academic and cultural organizations participated.

Our booth was located in a corner, so it was like having a double front. With smart decorations, especially a large photo of Master meditating in the Center, it was the focus of attention. Both men and women, young and old, regardless of nationality, race or religion could not help stopping to admire it.

Master's aphorisms in Her lecture shown on video injected a cool stream into the souls of those who were eager and thirsty. Many people stood there for a long time, reluctant to leave. Some even put their ears next to the screen, in order to listen more clearly to the eternal and constant Truth of the Universe. Noticing the enthusiasm displayed by the guests, fellow initiates hurried to find some small stools for their convenience.

A sister initiate went to buy some books at another booth. As she went to pay for the books, she found that the person in charge of the booth was absorbed in reading one of Master's news magazines. Then she noticed that Master's reference materials were to be found in almost every booth. So all the participants of the exhibition had come to our booth!

All the guests who visited us were naturally attracted by Master. For example, when a couple of very healthy, active young boys saw the various photographs of Master, they suddenly quietened down, looked at the photographs attentively and then spontaneously put their palms together and bowed to pay respect.

After looking at Master's photographs for a while, a middle aged lady, who brought four children with her, said to herself, "This is a living Buddha."

The moment a Hindu yogi saw the photographs of Master, he said, "I like this Master very much. I know that She has attained perfect enlightenment!"

A fellow initiate asked him, "How do you know that?"

He replied, "I can see Her light." (At the same time he made a hand gesture of waving light.)

The yogi continued to study Master's teachings in front of the booth, and repeatedly said that it was the happiest day of his life.

Another Hindu especially brought his Sikh friend over to watch the videos of Master's lectures. The Sikh friend kept putting his thumbs up, and both of them praised Master's teachings highly.

Some Malaysian compatriots from afar invited their friends to buy Master's books, but they did not know their way to the exhibition. When they asked a passer-by for directions, it turned out that the person was our neighbour. Our neighbour took them to our meditation Center, where they bought the books they wanted. As long as one is sincere in one's search for the Truth, Master will definitely not neglect them.

After reading some information about Master's lectures, one of the guests began to discuss the problems on his mind. Through the video that was showing, Master coincidentally answered his questions, and this made his very happy. It also verified that Master's teachings are living scriptures.

The security personnel were also attracted by the laughter and humour in Master's lectures, so much that they forgot their duties. There was one cleaner, who stood before the booth, bathed in Master's loving power. Not until he was hurried by his partner did he reluctantly leave.

Some friends from the U.S.A. repeatedly praised Master, saying She was dignified and beautiful. Friends from nations such as Monaco and India requested more sample booklets to take home for their friends. They also said that they would contact their nearest Centers immediately after they returned to their countries.

The Deep Affection Between Master And Disciples In Paris

After Her trip to Africa, Master passed through Paris, France. Hearing the good news, fellow initiates immediately assembled at Terminal One at De Gaulle Airport to welcome their most beloved Master.

Wearing a traditional Au Lacese gown, Master stepped out of the airport with Her attendants, and greeted the waiting fellow practitioners. She distributed packets of candy and biscuits to them and also to some tourists and airport staff who were attracted to Master.

After a brief rest at the hotel, Master went to the Paris Center to visit the fellow practitioners as per their earnest request. Situated in the suburbs of Paris, the Center was only purchased early this year. After the renovation and reconstruction, the residential compound was transformed into an ideal place for spiritual practice and for spreading Master's teachings. The Publications Office was originally a garage; the front block has been turned into a meditation hall; two rooms in the rear block serve as the office and computer room; and a toilet and storeroom have been built in the courtyard. The more complicated renovations were completed by professionals, while the remaining tasks were all done by fellow initiates. In choosing building materials and in the process of building the new Center, fellow practitioners have personally experienced Master's guidance and blessing.

Upon entering the courtyard, Master observed the neatly planted trees and flowers, the pond, and the water-lilies. She was delighted and said, "You have a beautiful Center!"

The Publications Room displayed Master's books, video tapes, audio tapes, photos, and News magazines. There were even handicrafts from Hsihu hanging on the walls. Master was glad to see such a beautiful Publication Room serving the disciples.

Ever since the new Center was completed, the fellow initiates in Paris had been expecting Master to come and bless the place. Now, Master has fulfilled their wish by going all that way to see the initiates, despite the arduous journey.

After She had viewed the new Center, Master said with deep meaning, "Now that you have your own Center, you have your own home." Fellow initiates understood very well that it was Mother Master who built this home for Her children, so that they can savour the warmth within the Quan Yin family. Through loving concern and humble toleration towards each other, they will learn to love their neighbors and even their enemies, and to love the world and the universe.

The Paris Center has been set up for over two years, and each fellow practitioner can notice the changes in themselves. Besides developing their compassion, they are also more disciplined and compliant.

In Her discourse, Master again stressed the incredible benefits of group meditation that will come to each spiritual practitioner, the immediate surroundings and even to the whole world. She said that any person, in doing anything, will need spiritual support and encouragement. To the spiritual practitioners, group meditation provides a gigantic vibrational field and power. It is also an opportunity for them to learn from, to support and to encourage, each other.

The next evening, a group meditation session and an initiation were held at the Center, where Master personally blessed each of the new initiates.

On the third day, when initiates were meditating in the hall, Master again appeared at the Center. She did not disturb anyone, but sat quietly on Her seat and meditated with the disciples. Graced by Master's blessing, everyone was immersed in a sea of loving vibration. After the meditation, Master gave an explicit speech; expounding profound teachings with light and humorous words. Everyone laughed happily, and then sank into deep reflection.

Master then left the meditation hall and walked into the courtyard, followed by the disciples. No worldly language could describe their reluctance to part. The air was a little bit cool that late summer night. In contrast to the revelry of Paris at night, this place was quiet and peaceful. The tranquillity made Master's low whisper especially clear. The words She whispered were: "I love you all", which transformed into shimmering stars overlooking the Parisian night sky.

Put Down Magical Powers And Seek Help From Master

Almost every day the branch Center in Budapest, Hungary receives phone calls from people everywhere wanting to enrol to learn the Convenient Method, or receive initiation, or for more information about Master's teachings. It is interesting that usually whole families want to learn, or at least couples. Even children want to become vegetarians. These people are very sincere, and almost all of them have had visions of Master's transformation body.

The number of people wanting to learn the Convenient Method in one remote province is especially large. So the Quan Yin messenger and fellow initiates went there, taking with them Master's video tapes and books, to introduce Master's teachings to people. Due to their sincerity in their search for the Truth, these people all felt strong blessings from Master, and they all had very good inner experiences.

In Hungary, almost all spiritual practitioners can heal people with magical powers. There is one would-be initiate, who could also heal people using spiritual powers. After coming to know Master's teachings, he strongly believes that only Master's power is the supreme one, and so he put down his magical powers. Whenever people come to him to be healed, he only prays to Master in his heart to bless the patients. Now he feels more at ease and much happier. Many others who healed using magical powers have been influenced by him and do not use their magical powers to heal any more. They have also begun to keep a vegetarian diet and are waiting to receive Master's initiation.

Witness Master's Loving Power At A Health Expo

A recent health expo in Columbus, Ohio featured many exhibitors involved in various areas of health enhancement. The booth representing the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association was well attended by visitors to the expo, and featured two impressive pictures of Master, a variety of Master's publications, and delicious vegetarian spring rolls made by fellow initiates. The joy and enthusiasm that the working initiates showed as they interacted with the visitors was infectious.

One man, who was gifted with psychic abilities, said that the initiates at the booth all had very positive energy, were very peaceful, and were of an advanced spiritual level. This, all the fellow initiates knew, was due to Master's love and blessing power. Many of the visitors were amazed at the positive power emitted from Master's pictures and some even came back repeatedly to the booth to share their extraordinary experiences with the fellow initiates.

One man commented that, as he looked at Master's picture, he felt a strong tingling sensation in his head, and that if he kept looking at Her, he felt as though he would float away! This man had been practicing meditation in another tradition for many years, and could recognize an enlightened Saint when he saw one. He asked for a sample booklet and showed interest in starting to practice the Quan Yin Method.

Another woman, a physician from mainland China said that she had recently had a dream about a spiritual master, and when she saw Supreme Master Ching Hai's picture, she realized that it was She who had appeared in her dream! This woman was strongly attracted to Master's teachings, and stayed at the booth for a long time, asking questions about initiation. She said that she liked Master's personality and style very much, felt a strong affinity with Her, and indicated that she would seek initiation.

The delicious vegetarian spring rolls made by fellow initiates were extremely popular with the visitors. One man, another exhibitor at the expo, said that he had eaten twenty of the rolls in one day, and asked if we would ship him an entire box of them via overnight express. After tasting the flavor of the rolls, a professional caterer, was amazed and was highly impressed that vegetarian food could be so delicious.

Another visitor, a physician from the Ohio area, said that she was immediately attracted to Master's picture and marvelled at Her incredible beauty. As one of the initiates spoke with her about the benefits and positive experiences he had gained through practicing the Quan Yin Method, the woman felt a wonderful energy. She had been raised in a Catholic family, had been seeking the Truth for many years, and had practiced numerous meditation methods, but never felt satisfied. She believed she had finally found the path she had been seeking all those years. She bought Master's book, and expressed interest in initiation.

The experience of the participating initiates was extremely rich. They learned a great deal through sharing Master's love and teachings, and all thank Her from the bottom of their hearts for giving them the chance to work for Her and witness the greatness of Her blessing power at the expo.

Over a hundred initiates from New York, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and even from the far away states of North Carolina and Indiana came to the beautiful site at Parvin State Park in New Jersey.

The camp site was on Island Point in an isolated camping area in the southern part of Parvin Lake. The island is connected to the shore by only a small bridge. Hanging high was a photo of Master smiling. Beautiful flowers and rich green shades make the natural forest an ideal place for meditation.

The abundant activities of the 3-day camping retreat were tightly arranged. Besides the diligent group meditation sessions, the afternoons were set aside as free time. Fellow initiates engaged themselves in swimming, boating and hiking so they could savor the refreshing and blissful natural atmosphere. In the evenings, there were barbecues and cheerful camp-fire parties. Under the blessing of Master's love, everyone enjoyed a 3-day camping holiday featuring rich spiritual experiences, delicious food and great fun.

Spreading The Gospel Together In Edmonton

After the one-day retreat in Vancouver, the Quan Yin messenger and fellow practitioners set out for Edmonton to spread Master's teachings. This beautiful and peaceful city is located in northern Canada. The local residents have an open mind and are very hospitable. Although there were not many local fellow practitioners, practitioners from Formosa, Eastern Canada and Western Canada joined the work group and helped smoothly organize a Quan Yin seminar at Alberta University. The event attracted a lot of professionals, researchers and young students. Most of these people were genuine spiritual seekers so they were very attentive during the seminar. Some even came to the venue much earlier to wait patiently for the seminar to begin.

Fellow practitioners involved were all very happy to be able to spread the Truth in this new city, because not only were they allowing more people to hear about Master's teachings, they themselves also benefited a lot from the work experience.

[Let Truth Cleanse The Souls Of The Prison Inmates]

[Peace And Harmony Pervade The Lecture

[By Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association In Chiayi Prison]

[Reporter Su Tai An from Min Xiong]

Fifty members of Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association went to the Chiayi Prison yesterday about 1:30 pm to preach to the inmates. Practitioner Wu told his story and described his feelings during his conversion from an evil to a virtuous life, and emphasised that "Doing good deeds is the greatest happiness".

At the gathering, a monastic disciple led a discussion to exchange ideas and insights in life with the congregation, and taught them how to meditate. Finally, they sang some holy psalms together. The gathering was full of peace and warmth, and concluded successfully at 4:15 pm.

The branch Center of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association is situated in Jiang Tso Dian of Min Xiong Xiang. Yesterday, fifty practitioner 'bodhisattvas', hoping to uplift society by injecting a timely cleansing current, entered the Chiayi Prison for a Truth spreading event. As arranged by the Prison authority, about two hundred and fifty female inmates gathered at the event hall to attend the lecture.

To begin, brother Wu gave a detailed account of his early years in crime circles. He was classified by the police as a Class-A villain, and had spent eleven years in prison. Heavily loaded with karma, he was tortured by agonizing illness. By complete coincidence, he got to know about the credibility and greatness of Supreme Master Ching Hai. Eventually, the prodigal son returned, and put down his slaying knife to follow Supreme Master Ching Hai, to practice the Quan Yin Method, and ultimately realized the Truth about human life.

After him, a close fellow disciple went on the stage to expound the benefits of practicing the Quan Yin Method, and the greatness of Supreme Master Ching Hai. Through a question and answer session, he exchanged ideas with the inmates, and then taught them a meditation method. After the instruction, the place was stark silent as the inmates started to meditate in their seats. The meditation has benefited them greatly.

At the gathering, members of the International Association distributed free booklets and Master's photographs. Finally, they sang the song, "Tears of the Holy Mother" together. Both parties melted into one, and the atmosphere was incredibly touching. Upon leaving, the association members served each inmate with some western snacks. After over two hours of edification, silent gratitude was present in the eyes of the inmates as they reluctantly bid farewell.

A Short Stay In Hsihu To Be Perfect

    A Short Stay In Hsihu

    Compiled By Taipei News Group

As there were many major and minor construction projects going on in Hsihu, a fellow sister seized this rare opportunity to join Master's work, and stayed in Hsihu for a week. The time might have been short, but she learnt and understood a lot. There were two incidents which impressed her the most.

She was filled with romantic illusions when she went to stay in Hsihu, which were proved wrong after she had stayed there. Working in Hsihu, she had to always struggle against herself, challenging the habits accumulated through many lives. The difficulty was not only in facing her own shortcomings, but also in chopping them off and overcoming them. This demanded that she be quick, precise and determined, while upholding truthfulness and beauty.

It is very difficult to know the real situation unless one has lived in Hsihu. However, the numerous tests also brought her fast and tremendous improvement. She is extremely grateful to Master for giving her this chance.

One day, she laid turf with other fellow practitioners. As she seldom paid any attention to plants, she did not think that horticulture was a great science. It was not until she heard Master say, "When laying the turf, you have to sing to them, wish them and bless them to grow prosperously, very green and beautiful...", that the sister deeply realized her love was too small and shallow. She suddenly understood why the trees and plants in Hsihu were more prosperous and beautiful than those in other places! Because of Master's love, they have the confidence to grow!

    To Be Perfect

By Fellow Initiate Wu, Taipei, Formosa

We rehearsed our dance each week to prepare for the performance at the Mid-Autumn evening show. Since group dancing requires cooperation, any misunderstandings between one another should be resolved. A good mutual understanding is essential to create a joyful and cooperative atmosphere through our dance.

To begin with, I did not have a clear idea of dancing nor the right attitude towards it. As time went by, Master gave me many chances to appreciate and feel the beauty and joy. Once, while I worked in the garden in Hsihu, I observed the tender petals swaying softly in the breeze under the genial sunshine. This experience of delicacy and gentle beauty added new elements to my dance skills.

The short stay in Hsihu also helped purify me a lot. I became more sensitive while dancing. I found new feeling and understanding of some points I had neglected before.

One thing happened on the night before the performance which helped me grow a great

deal. Several fellow practitioners, who were absent from the rehearsal for a long time, joined the practice and made the well prepared dance a less perfect one. I struggled hard inside and I clung to my idea of "perfection". I did not understand why Master arranged it this way. Doesn't Master always teach us to try to be perfect? Then, it occurred to me that Master's definition of perfection must be different from mine.

To be perfect is not simply to have a perfect situation, but to be sincere and to make unremitting efforts. Perfection brings happiness not regrets to people, it turns a non-ideal situation into the best possible situation. Perfection means inner satisfaction while trying one's best.

Master, now I understand that I should not ask for situations to be just as I expect, but rather that I should strive to achieve the inner perfection through my constant effort.

Tying Affinity In Monaco Africa Is Singing Blissfully

    Tying Affinity In Monaco

Narrated & Recorded By Fellow Initiates Ke and Chang, Formosa

As invited by Monaco, Master flew to the capital, Monte Carlo, to take part in the Red Cross Charity Night, convened by Prince Rainier and the Royal family. The guests were largely aristocrats and celebrities from many countries. When Master, wearing an orange S.M. Celestial Clothes design, arrived at the party, everyone present turned their heads and marvelled at Her ethereal beauty, which immediately became the focus of their admiration. They were all wondering from which oriental country could this mystical, yet charming princess, come from? The reporters were also mesmerized by Master's dazzling demeanor, and the camera shutters clicked incessantly. In the Nice-Matin newspapers the next day, Master was acclaimed as the most attractive and brilliant among the hundreds of guests on that dream-like evening.

Throughout the evening party, uncontrollable glances from the hundreds of guests were directed towards Master's table, accompanied by words of admiration. Some guests had met Master before on Her birthday party (held at a club in Monaco), and were deeply impressed by Her. They never dreamt that they could see Master again that evening, and with great excitement they came forward and greeted Her!

During Master's stay in Monaco, a famous film producer from Hollywood met Her on a casual occasion. He invited Master to visit his yacht, and then to have dinner at his home. His wife even specially prepared a table of Chinese vegetarian dishes for Master and Her retinue. Also present at the dinner was a prince of Benin in Western Africa. Upon seeing Master, he felt Her tremendous power at once, and was sure that She was an extraordinary spiritual person. He added that no

gorgeous clothing could possibly conceal Master's great blessing power. Being definite that Master could benefit many sentient beings, he wasted no time in inviting Master to visit his country and the neighboring nations. He even requested Master to teach and bless the leaders of those countries, so as to benefit the African multitude. During the several days of Master's trip, he sensed Master's great compassion even deeper, and he revered Master as 'The Living God'!

The truth was, Master merely introduced Herself as a philosophy teacher and an artist, while the accompanying disciples were Her friends, that's all. However, the prince insisted that Master was teaching sentient beings with each one of Her slightest actions and words, and that he had been edified by the way She walked and spoke, and by Her answers to his questions.

His observation was really keen to understand Master so well, although they were only newly acquainted. Following the European group meditation in Nice, Master was unable to decline the sincere invitation from the prince, so She and the disciples flew to Africa with him.

    Africa Is Singing Blissfully

Narrated & Recorded By Fellow Initiates Ke and Chang, Formosa

Situated in Western Africa, Ivory Coast has a comfortable climate, and a tidy, modern appearance in its cities, giving a very pleasant first impression to visitors. Knowing about Master's visit, the First Lady of Ivory Coast, Mrs. Henriette Bedie, specially arranged to see Her. Master consented and went to the Presidential Palace accompanied by the Secretary of the Palace (who was also a princess).

The First Lady greatly admired Master's loving compassion. During their happy conversation, it became known that the local hospitals needed some help. Therefore, Master immediately contributed money for purchasing refrigerators, medicine and other urgently needed apparatus. The contribution was received by the First Lady for the hospitals.

In the company of the prince of Ivory Coast, Master visited some orphanages in Abidjan, and the orphans were most delighted to receive the candies, biscuits and fruits personally blessed by Master. There was an amusing episode: the orphanage kept a cute nimble monkey who immediately stretched out its hands asking for blessed food when it saw Master. When Master gave it a banana, it laughed happily with a broad grin. Master remarked that She had never seen a monkey laughing so beautifully; the expression denoted the contentment and bliss as if it was in heaven. Perhaps the soul of the monkey understood that liberation is near having taken one look at an enlightened living Master!

Stepping out of the plane upon arrival at the Benin airport, the National Band waiting struck up the tune used for greeting a national guest. The joyful music soared high, as if announcing to the people of the whole nation, the arrival of this most beautiful and special guest. The whole place was filled with a joyful and loving atmosphere.

The Benin people are cheerful and optimistic. On the streets of Cotonou, the capital, people were singing and dancing everywhere (in their traditional African styles). From adults to children, everyone was innocent and happy. Wherever Master went, She was addressed as the Princess. People were so happy to see Master that they performed as best as they could. When receiving the candies given by Master, they could not help cheering with joy and surprise.

King Aguli Agbo of Benin knew about Master's visit, so he invited Master to his palace. Putting on formal imperial robes, and holding the imperial staff, the King and the Queen welcomed Master with a grand imperial reception, symbolising their highest respect. According to the Benin custom, when people visit, they receive the blessing from the King. However, when the King saw Master, he humbly told the prince, "The power of this Master is greatly superior to mine and you should endeavor to learn from Her." He even expressed his hope to take a photo with Master. When Master was leaving, the King accompanied Her to walk out of the palace, which was a courteous action, unprecedented in the country.

The prince invited Master to visit a former palace (now a museum), and introduced the history and culture of Benin. Standing in front of the statue of a great person, the prince explained that this was his grandfather - a very wise king in Benin history. He was so loved and respected by his people, that they erected a statue of him for veneration. The people often go there to remember his meritorious deeds for the country. Master expressed Her respect by placing flowers at the statue.

During Her stay in Benin, Master also visited children in several orphanages. One of the orphanages was being run by convent sisters, who immediately recognized that Master was no ordinary person, and must be someone with unearthly power. Master gave candies, biscuits and plenty of blessed food to the orphans, and also contributed money for adding facilities to the orphanage.*

On the eve of Master's departure, the First Lady of Benin, Mrs. Nicephore Soglo, invited Her for a delightful meeting at her official mansion, thus sealing the affinity with Master.

Wherever Master goes, She always takes boundless blessings to the place. During Master's voyage to Africa, the people who benefited were not just those who saw Master, because the whole African continent is singing blissfully having been graced by Master's divine love and blessing!

[ Remark: Master was much concerned about the lack of medical supplies in the country. Upon returning to Formosa, She further instructed the fellow practitioners of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association to ship one crate of medical supplies worth NT$47,172 (8,656 francs), to an orphanage (Orphelinat Saint Enfant-Jesus) in Abomey, Benin.

    Master Tells Stories

    Little Princess Will Grow Up

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai to foreign initiates at Hsihu Center, Formosa

July 10, 1995 (Originally in English)

A long time ago, in China, there was a king who succeeded his father and ruled over a very, very big nation. You know how big China is. A long time ago, most of the Asias belong to them. So it must be very big. But even then, even though he rules over a very extensively great nation, his knowledge is very, very small (Master and everyone laugh). That is a very polite way to put it. Otherwise, you just say downright like the American says, "He's dump; he's idiot; he's stupid." But in the old time, in China, especially, if you say the king is stupid, you know what happens to your head? (Master and all laugh) So nobody dare says anything about this stupid king; and it happens that he married a very beautiful princess but also - like attracts like - very idiotic (Master and everyone laugh). So both of them were a very, very good match; and they live very happily together (Master and all laugh). That we can guess, uh? We are not very stupid. So both of them live happily together and rule the great kingdom.

Out of this marriage, came a truly very beautiful princess. No other child has ever been so beautiful and lovely. So the people named her Princess "Gloria" because she's so gloriously beautiful. And she was a very good girl, good child. But unfortunately, the king and the queen was so very stupid, so instead of being happy with the little child, which is so beautiful, so glorious and so clever, they were so disappointed and so very "traurig" (Master speaks this German word and laughs) -very miserable because they keep saying to each other, "Oh my God, look at my child, she is so small, so little, her leg is so and so long only, her arm is so short, and she has no hair." Infants are mostly like monks (Master and everyone laugh), like me before and after (Master laughs). So the problem is they always complain everyday. They say, "My child doesn't grow up. It's abnormal. It doesn't look like everyone else around us - so small, helpless, cannot do nothing, cannot speak, cannot eat, cannot walk, cannot read book, cannot sing, cannot talk, cannot watch TV, cannot swim and cannot do anything. So the king and the queen were very disappointed and very unhappy, and they were thinking that the child is a kind of evil phenomenon or evil sent, kind of, bad omen for them. So, they were thinking of getting rid of the child because both of them have never gotten in touch with anyone else outside of the palace, and all the people who are serving them are grown-up people. They have never walked outside anywhere. They don't read books. They don't know anything. They were both completely, absolutely idiotic, therefore they were very very disappointed with the child. Now, because they have never seen such a child before in their life - they live in a sealed palace and they don't know anything else besides the palace. Then they were thinking that the child is a kind of abnormal animal.

So now, every officer in the court have tried their best to explain to the king and the queen that all infants are like that, but they don't listen; and they wanted to get rid of this devil thing. But then everyone says, "Oh please take it easy, maybe we can do something, yeah?" All the officers in the court say, "Please consider. We will try. Maybe there's something we can do so please hold-on." So then the king says, "Not! I will kill this child or get rid of her unless she grow up; unless she will become like us. Otherwise, I'll kill her."

And so, finally the king and the queen ordered that all the doctors in the country, and even in the neighboring countries, come to his palace in order to cure the princess and make her grow quickly. "Maybe she's sick; if she's normal, then she's sick," that's what they think. So all the doctors came and eased the very bad tempered king and queen. But they don't know anything else; very ignorant people. So he says, "Today, within on hour, I'll tell people to sound the bell." Big bell like that. He will tell people to sound the gong three times within an hour. So all the doctors have to think of a way to make the princess change and grow, become normal; otherwise, they kill the princess and kill them as well. The king in the old time was God; even though an idiot God. So everyone was so... trembling with fear. Anyhow, nobody can think of any way to do it because doctors are only used to saving people and curing people's sickness, but cannot make a child grow in one hour. They tried to explain and explain very patiently to the king and the queen, but both of them don't want to take "no" for an answer. He says, "I'm the king. Whatever I said must be done or you die." "Do it or die." So nobody can say anything.

Finally, the last sound of the gong finished, and the king and the queen came out in between, flanked both sides by their bodyguards with the shining swords, already taken out ready to kill. Wow, everyone just froze with fear; and the king was asking that whether anyone has already a solution for the princess' sickness and abnormality. Nobody has. (Master and everyone laugh) So, and then, he was ready to kill. He said, "Alright then, I'm going to call Supreme Master Ching Hai (Master and everyone laugh) Pray for yourself and your five generations and then you will die."

Anyhow, Supreme Master Ching Hai doesn't want to take that kind of a call, so She run to the Himalayas (Everyone laughs). Then, everyone was ready to die because nothing else they can do. But then, at the last minute, there's one doctor from the last row over there and he said, "I have something. I have a solution, please don't kill yet." Oh, the king was very happy. He said, "Yes, I told you, there must be something that can be done. No problem." So then everyone just listened to see what the doctor has to say. So the doctor said, "Well, I know one kind of medicine that can make the princess become the normal size that you want." So the king said, "Quickly, quickly tell me. How much blessed candy and cake you want, it doesn't matter." (Master and everyone laugh) And so the doctor said, "OK, I temporarily call this medicine, Time Medicine." "In order to make this medicine, we need four hundred fifty-four kind of ingredients, and then three thousand five hundred seventy-one other kind of fragrants and essences; and this is a terrific kind of medicine. It's a very rare that anybody knows, but..." and the king was very anxious and said, "But what?" The doctor, I think, he took time. He bought some time in order to cook this medicine up for him. Besides, I think he was kind of trembling, yeah? Like he talks slowly.

And then the doctor said, "Well, because I'm afraid that with so much ingredients necessary for this kind of medicine, we cannot find it in one day. It takes a long time (Master and everyone laugh)." Very good, very clever. And then the king said, "But you know I'm a king. Anything can be possible, just tell me what you need. We tell people to go and find it." And then the doctor said, "Oh, your Majesty, your power everyone knows and can do many things, but in order to find such a thing in the universe is not the power of the king can provide, because between these above ingredients there are a few things which is not readily available. For example, the one ingredient is called 'Years and Months' (Master and everyone laugh)." "The ingredient, 'Years and Months' - two years can blossom only one flower... And then you have to wait four days later and then, at the twelfth hour, one minute, two seconds in order to get that flower, otherwise, it doesn't work."

For example, like that. He said all kinds of nonsense. I can say it myself. So I don't need to read the book. "And then it has to be done in the winter." I think he just tries to make it difficult because the king is so stupid anyway. Whatever he said, it's alright. He doesn't know what's the difference. And then he said, "There's another one, more important than that ingredient. There's another ingredient called 'Patience'. This one is even difficult to find (Master laughs). It grows only in the Himalayas; and then every six years, the snow melt only one time and then you have to wait for the six months, six days, six hours, and six seconds of the summer of the fourth year, and then you can get that; for example, like that. So if you want all these ingredients to work, we have to do exactly what is prescribed in the medical book, otherwise, it's a waste of time and the princess's abnormalty can never be cured." Alright, so the king was running out of patience. "Oh, so difficult! Really, even for a king like me?" He said, "For everyone alike." The doctor said, "Well, I have already proposed to you the medical precept, the five precepts (Master and everyone laugh), and we just need patience, and all the endurance to find this medicine ingredient, otherwise, I cannot do anything for the princess." And then so the king was kind of half doubting, and half believing. So he kept thinking very hard with his stupid wisdom. He was thinking; instead of thinking here (Master points to the Her wisdom eye), he kept thinking here and then he think here (Master points to Her eyes and then to Her nose. Master and everyone laugh). Eye and nose. And then he thinks at his temples, and then he thinks on his ears, and then he thinks at his beard, and then he can't think, and then he was thinking with his hair, twisting his hair like this; and he still cannot make it out whether the ingredients that the medicine man says is true or whether he shouldn't follow through with it. But the queen, luckily, she's the queen - woman always has a little more common sense even though they were both stupid (Master laughs). So the queen said, "Oh, never mind. Well, let's try. We don't loose nothing." So the king said, "OK." Of course, you know, woman always decide the big things in the universe (Master and everyone laugh). You know that, uh? In every country, the First Lady. Oh! We don't go into that. We'll be in trouble. Well, I heard that mostly the First Ladies are the powerful ones in the House. Not in every country. Not in America, perhaps. I'm sorry.

And then the king said, "OK." And then he asked the medicine man, "How long? One week, okay? (Master laughs)" The medicine man shook his head and said, "No no, I'm sorry. It takes longer than that. It must be at least twelve years, at the most rush hour traffic, no less than twelve years. And during these twelve years, you have to give the princess into my custody, into my care and I alone take care of her. No one else can go near. No one from the royal family. No one from the outside can go near the princess, otherwise, it also doesn't work. I guarantee to you, after twelve years, if the princess doesn't grow as a normal person, you cut my head off." (Master and everyone laugh. Master says, "That I can also guarantee." ) So the king said, "Alright, alright. Well, I guess I cannot do anything." And then the queen said, "OK, just let him. After twelve years, if he doesn't make it, we can chop both of their heads off. So, no problem." So the king once again listened to the queen. So now, he gave the princess to the doctor to take care; and then he has to write guarantee bill, money back guarantee, you know? "If you are not satisfied, money back guarantee in twelve years." He signed it and stamped, and everything was okay. So he took the princess home, and of course, you know what happened.

Twelve years later, he presented the princess back to the king and the queen, the most beautiful human that they have ever seen - beautiful long and black shinning hair and big eyes like mine (Master and everyone laugh. Audience clapps); like mine but double beautiful and big. So then everyone was so happy. Of course, the king and the queen rewarded the medicine man handsomely, and they live happily ever after, the three of them. The princess, during these twelve years, had learned many things from different professors, doctors and teachers in the land which the doctor has hired for that purpose. So she grew up beautiful as well as wise. So she knows everything. So she has later succeeded her father and ruled the kingdom with wisdom and compassion and love. So China at that time, under her reign, was very, very, very good. Finish! (Audience clapps)

So you know what, uh? Don't come to me and ask me, "Can I become Buddha tonight or in one week's time?" Even then, the immediate enlightenment is available but it takes time for you to assimilate to the long forgotten elixir of your own wisdom. So it takes a long time for you to remember again, because the big dose of wisdom kills you just like a big dose of vitamins or whatever forceful and powerful dose of protein or any kind of nourishment will kill the infant, right? So they have to take time to eat the food and grow up. Everything takes time. The same with us. We heard that the Buddha sits under the bodhi tree for six years and became Buddha. So if you want, you can try. We have a lot of bodhi trees here (Audience laughs) and it's all free. If you want, you may sit there and we bring food to you everyday, with hand folded. Anybody wants to sit under the bodhi tree for six years? Yeah? It's a very easy job, just sit there and do nothing (Master and everyone laugh). No need for planting grass or nothing (Everyone laughs). No rock' & roll' *(Master and everyone laugh). Anyone here applies for the offer? Well, six years is a very short time.

It's not six years or six months. It's many many lifetimes of hardwork. And perhaps, this is the last time, if you make it. If you want to, you can make it this time. If you don't want, it's okay. You can come back again (Master laughs). Sit under the bodhi tree six more years. Everyone has a chance to go back to the glorious kingdom of God, but everyone must go by themselves, even with the blessing of the Master. Must go by yourselves. Only when you fall down and you're in trouble, then the Master takes care. Otherwise, have to walk. The parents cannot walk for the children, is that not so? Even though we love them, they walk by themselves; and they learn by mistakes, they tumble and they fall and then they walk again, until they can run.

So, same with everyone of us. I walk my path, you walk yours. I walk before, I came back and take you, so I know the way better, that's all. So you have to walk, alright? I standby and you walk. (Master and everyone laugh. Audience clapps).

Note*: At this time, the foreign disciples are assigned the task of planting grass and roll the rocks for the garden.

    Master's Words

The Preciousness Of Meditation Accept Whatever Situations Come To You And Face Your Problems

    The Preciousness Of Meditation

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai to foreign fellow initiates

in Hsihu Center, Formosa July 11, 1995 (Originally In English)

After a really good meditation session, you stand up like a saint, and no one dares touch you. If you really have a good meditation and sincerely practice, people sense that, and feel that, and they have nothing for you but reverence and love. And you have nothing at all written on your face except love and purity. And that I can see very, very clearly, like reading a book. Do you take notice? Those who meditate a great deal, and sincerely practice, you see their change? Yeah? That's why when you come here, you should, you ought to meditate all the time, whenever you can. Not only sitting there meditating, but in your mind, you must concentrate. Don't try to find friends and,... idle gossiping everywhere. Even if I don't see you then, when I see you, I see. All the people see. It's written on your face very, very clearly. I tell you from all honesty of my heart. There's nothing you can hide, nothing at all. It's written on your face, in your eyes, on your forehead. It's a sense around your body, doesn't matter what kind of perfume you spray, no difference, really. So, very precious is the meditation.

Accept Whatever Situations Come To You And Face Your Problems

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai to foreign initiates

at Hsihu Center, Formosa July 15, 1995 (Originally in English)

When you go home, take care of your family members. Even though your bugging husbands and wives are fit to throw away (Master and everyone laugh); but since you have already accepted him or her in the first place, better continue. Because sometimes we think if we change partners, married to another wife or husband, then we will feel very, very much better. But it is not always true. And in the later research, people say that ninety three percent American men, if they have to do it again, they marry the same wife. So it's good news for you, the American people. And other countries, France, or European country, or maybe other countries, about sixty percent, seventy percent husbands said the same thing. No country is less than fifty percent, anyhow. So the majority of men love the same women, even though they have divorced and have a high hope to make it better with another one. But, then, after they think it over or they tried, they would prefer to marry the same woman.

When we marry with someone, it takes a long time and a great deal of effort to adjust to each other, is that not so? And then first, the honeymoon is sweet and honey and then later it is scrubbing and it was painful and then later, both of you grow up and get used to each other. And it takes a long time and effort. So it's a pity that now you forsake it and, then, start it all over again, wow! It's the same procedure and same thing.

I accept whatever God sends at that moment and take it for the best. Somebody is the best if we have no one else to compare to, right? So the more we have the opportunity to compare, our partner or whatever the person we are acquainted to, the more we have the reason to complain, and the more confusion, more chaos arise. So it is better we stick to the 'tried' and trusted. And in that case we have less problems, less expectations, and more time to relax and meditate. And whatever problem there is, be sure that if you change the partner, there would be the same at least or even more, you have experienced this or not? Do not talk about husband or wife, if you work outside, with many colleagues or many bosses and, then, you will know what I mean too, right? He has these but he doesn't have the other things. These

are always the problem in this world. So I think, you and I (Master and everyone laugh) better learn to accept the things as they come and try to act accordingly, you know what I mean? That's why sometimes you come here and you feel like you want to complain about some of the organization or some of the misunderstandings or things like that. You want to correct them, but if you correct these, later another thing comes. So, you have never really a life without a problem( Master and everyone laugh).

Save Our Energy And Concentrate On Spiritual Practice

So anyhow we just have to count on God and good luck in order to survive in this world. Otherwise there is no amount of intelligence and wisdom that can cope with the Maya of this world. Just because we happened to lose our way and pass by this illusionary Maya world, so we get punishment for this. We are actually innocent. We just pass by here. And then we get a spell casted upon us and then we are confused. That's why we better find the way to go home quickly ( Master laughs). The later, the worse; the darker it becomes; the worse the situation will be, understand? So anything else like troublesome husband and wives, except when it's extremely, too unbearable, like violence and threatening to your mind and life, then you must consider leaving, and go somewhere else. Otherwise if just personalities, habits and opinions are differences then I think we just try to ignore, try to solve it as much as possible or ignore it in order so that we can concentrate more and then we go home quicker. Otherwise there will be a lot of wasted time for us here, adjusting somebody's habit and personalities while we could advance quicker and quicker, if we concentrate adjusting ourselves in the spiritual practice. Is that not so? So you and I both must remember the important issues and the less important matters so that we can sort out what is the most important. We do it first and we pay more attention to that. I don't mean to interfere in your personal decision or relationship. It's just through experiences and with good intention, I tell you that changing environment and relationships don't always change our luck in life.

    While On The Path

Happiness Makes One Attain Great Advancement In One's Practice

By A Resident Disciple in Hsihu Center, Formosa

I recently read a book entitled, "A Being From Another Universe". The name of the protagonist in the book is Yang Tze - a young girl born in China. She claimed that she was a being from outer space, in a cosmic system beyond human imagination. Now ten years old, this little girl can see through material objects, and has been able to predict the future since she was small. She can even systematically analyze astronomical laws and cosmic phenomena, which stunned many Chinese astronomers! The author of this book is the father of Yang Tze - a famous journalist in the field of health and medicine in China.

In one chapter called, "Nourishment for the Soul", a passage reads:

[One day, Yang Tze told her father delightfully that she had broken through a 'major barrier' in her practice. Her father found it difficult to believe that a seven year old child could possibly understand things like 'practice' or 'major barrier'. He retorted, "You are playing for fun all day long, and I have never seen you cross your legs to meditate, or practice anything. How could you have attained great advancement in practice?"

Yang Tze replied, "Father! Let me explain to you! Each person has their individual method of practice, and my method is 'playing for fun', through which I derive advancement in practice. Do you know why you have not progressed in your practice?"

"I have no idea! What do you think?"

"The problem is that you don't know how to play! Your thoughts are very unhappy now, but happiness is exactly the nourishment required for practicing to become an immortal! Do you understand? Most probably you think you can drink more, eat more, and then turn the food into nourishment. You are very wrong! The nutrition transformed from material food can only sustain your physical body, not your spirit. What your spirit really needs is happiness, bliss!"

Yang Tze was speaking emotionally and definitively, as if she were an omniscient and superlative being talking to an ordinary human. With a calm reflection, I found her words full of wisdom and philosophic truth. From the viewpoint of practicing Chi Kung, people must first pacify their mind, and maintain happiness and peace. If the mind is not tranquil, any practice is a waste of time. The major subject in practicing Chi Kung is to cultivate the Original Spirit of the practitioner. So, what nourishment can sustain this Original Spirit - the human soul? I had never given it a thought.

Yang Tze continued to say, "Have you heard about Quan Yin Bodhisattva? On the last few days when She was about to attain the Ultimate Truth, She was extremely happy at heart! Happiness was the essence that made Her cultivation progress so fast. However, your mind is fully occupied with article writing, doing this, doing that, and you are even in wrath sometimes. Let me tell you: Whenever you are angry, your practicing efforts are futile. Only happiness can turn you into an immortal! Remember my words. You must always be happy! Happy!"

During Yang Tze's speech, she was tapping the wall with a chopstick, just like a teacher standing in front of the blackboard giving a lesson to some pupils. Having finished her talk, she just opened the door and dashed out to play for fun again.]

Since childhood, every person is dogmatically confined by society: Don't laugh! Don't play with this! Be good! Be serious! Be dignified! Therefore, our innocent and lovely inborn nature to laugh and play is strangled early in our childhood, and disappears when we grow up. Perhaps, with luck, a tiny bit of this nature is left within us, but we still try our best to suppress it, and dare not let it sprout.

I remember when I first followed Master to practice, She once said to me half jokingly, "Each time I see your solemn face, I can hardly laugh, and I really want to hide myself from you in a retreat."

Truly, when we cannot laugh, we also affect others around us. Observing other people having fun or laughing, we might even think: "What is so funny about this?", "Why on earth are they laughing so loudly?", "They really disgraced the proper deportment of spiritual practitioners by showing all their teeth!", "They shouldn't laugh when eating.", "They should speak with dignity, instead of jokingly!", and many other criticisms. We will use the same trick that suffocated our own 'play and laugh' nature, and repeat it on those who have fortunately escaped the slaughter. Only when everyone else has lost their nature to laugh cheerfully and play joyfully, then we are satisfied.

By paying some attention, you will find that almost all people love to play with babies. The babies can utter their baby-talk of "Ee-ee, ah-ah, oo-oo!" that nobody understands. They laugh, they stumble, they cry, they make all kinds of gestures with hands and feet, they create many troubles for you, yet we love to play with them. Why? In fact, we have always been missing that innocent, unpretentious, and pure inborn nature, which is so full of joyful laughter and happiness.

You see, babies simply cry aloud when they are hungry or uncomfortable, sleep sweetly when they are tired, and laugh when they feel like laughing without having to find any excuse. From babies, we can rediscover this feeling again, which comforts our souls a little.

Therefore, Master always says, "As they advance on the spiritual path, spiritual practitioners should become pure and happy like children."

This excerpt from the book made me realize the inherent relationship between our spiritual progress and 'happiness and laughter'. No wonder, for all these years, Master has been painstakingly reminding us to always laugh, and to refrain from becoming a 'frustrated Buddha' or 'solemn Buddha', and for this She has always played with us.

Master said, "When you play, play with all your heart. When you laugh, laugh with all your might. Be solemn when it is a solemn occasion, and work seriously when it is time to work. Do the right thing at the right time, with total devotion and concentration. If you have developed this habit in your daily life, naturally you can concentrate better in meditation."

Master's advice may sound commonplace, but it is the secret to spiritual advancement!

    A Reader's Letter

Quan Yin Bodhisattva Awakens Me In My Deluding Dreams

    By Mr. Qiu, Taipei, Formosa

    Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai,

I have received and read the News magazine sent to me, and I especially thank You for Your kindness with this letter.

For generations, my family has been worshipping Quan Yin Bodhisattva and Shakyamuni Buddha. Therefore, in my former position as a civil officer, apart from guiding my subordinates with discipline, I also encouraged them to believe in religion and follow moral teachings. The result was always satisfactory.

After my retirement, I once listened to Master's recorded lecture at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. I found Master's philosophy and theories very logical and clear; especially when they were introduced through Your superlative wisdom, fluent speech and scientific reasoning. All the Buddha's teachings were expounded explicitly, and were easily understood. Having carefully read the material provided by some fellow practitioners, I was absolutely convinced that Master is the incarnation of Quan Yin Bodhisattva. As I am too old, I am now practicing the Convenient Method to cultivate my body and soul. To commemorate this most significant event in my life, I have written the following verses to show that I will never forget. I present them to Master for Your review.

Wishing Master success in everything, and safety throughout the year!

Confined in this world for seventy years,
Never for one moment did I forget to seek Quan Yin.
In futility, my iron soles were worn out,
But Her divine form I found in Hsihu.

In heavy karma are sentient beings being trapped,
Their former causation explained by the enlightened Master.
Her merciful words pervade the whole universe,
Rousing those lost in their deluding dreams.

    Master Tells Jokes

    Who Is The Laziest? Fire

Told by Supreme Master Ching Hai at the Tien Shan Center in Hong Kong (Originally in Chinese)

    Who Is The Laziest?

There is a funny story about laziness. Three young men were lying by the roadside doing nothing. A person passed by and asked curiously, "Ah! What are you three doing here?"

They said,"Oh! We are very lazy, so we are lying here. We do not want to work."

The person said, "Well, if this is so, you tell me how you are lazy. I shall give one dollar to the laziest person."

If one wants to be lazy, one might as well be completely lazy so that others have nothing to say.

One of the lazy ones said, "I am very thirsty. I am both hungry and thirsty. I have a pear in my pocket, but I am so lazy that I cannot take it out." (Audience laughs)

Are you any better than he is?

The next one said, "Well! That is nothing. The sun keeps shining in my eyes. It hurts my eyes, but I am too lazy to turn my head around." (Audience laughs)

The third person said, "Well, the two of them are not so bad. I am the laziest." He continued, "I want to go to sleep very badly. I am exhausted! But I am too lazy to close my eyes." (Audience laughs)

Isn't this the same with you - too lazy to think. You know it should be such a way, but you are too lazy to turn it around. Isn't it so? Actually all of these funny stories contain lessons for us to learn, but some of the lessons are not obvious.

    Fire!

This is a true story. In England there was a high official who hired a servant to attend to him. In those days, only people who had power and wealth could smoke. The rest did not even know what tobacco was.

The servant came for the first time and saw the official sitting by the stove smoking. This servant was from the countryside and had never seen anyone smoking before. When he saw smoke coming out from his master's nose and mouth (Audience laughs), he thought that there was a fire. He was about to serve his master some tea but when he saw the situation, he poured the tea up his master's nose (Audience laughs), and cried out aloud, "Fire! Fire! Fire!" (Audience laughs)

Yes! It's really silly! Only machines have smoke coming out of them. How can smoke come out of people? Isn't it so? It looks so funny! And he thought he was great, belonging to the upper class.

It's strange. People are normally clean, good looking and don't smell. How can smoke come out from their noses? It's so unattractive on the street. No wonder the servant thought that there was a fire and poured the tea into his master's nostrils. Ah! It looks funny too, like a chimney, doesn't it? Or like a train. Trains also have smoke coming out at the front, and at the rear (Audience laughs). Yes! Come to think of it, it is strange!

It is good that after you met me, you cleaned and tidied up yourselves, and removed the "chimneys". Otherwise, it is really strange. A person looks nice, how can smoke keep coming out of his nose? Can you imagine? Right? (Audience: Yes.) Don't you think it's strange? Especially some very beautiful ladies who wear those classy kinds of clothes, very similar to the ones I design, and walk in an elegant way, but emit smoke from their noses. (Audience laughs) Can you imagine? How come this is so? They must have been fooled by the Maya power to become this way. They don't know that they look terrible. Yes!

Also, there are some very handsome men who wear very trendy clothes and do their hair nicely, but their noses, and sometimes their mouths as well, also emit smoke. Even so, they become accustomed to it. Among the beings on Earth, all the beings that can move, none have smoke coming out of their noses in the way that some of us humans do. Even so, those people accept it! And they think that they are great, looking like a train, like an old fashioned train that goes "choo, choo, choo, choo!" Smoke comes out at both the front and rear of it. (Audience laughs)

Sometimes I find humans amusing. They don't know that they are funny, and think that the way they act is high class. In the old days only the people who were close to the kings or who were royalty could "emit smoke". They spent so much money, but damaged their health, as well as that of their families and neighbours, and still thought that it was good. Some of the people in this world are cheated very badly! Isn't it so? Truly they are completely fooled! Perhaps it might have something to do with the conditions in hell, which they were used to! It is colder up here and since there wasn't any fire, they continued to make some fire, to remind them of how warm it was when they were in hell. But don't mention this to people outside! (Audience laughs) The most you can say is, "Oh! You look like a train!" (Audience laughs) You must not say too much. They would feel sad, and maybe accuse you of violating their "human rights." I warn you!

How are human rights related to smoking? No one has the right to damage other people's health. Isn't it so? Some people make everything connected with human rights. They could say that their human rights were being abused if they were not allowed to smoke. (Master and everyone laugh) These people are really tedious. They are the ones who abuse people's human rights, aren't they? They smoke out of fun, or out of addiction. Then they harm many people around them, including children, pregnant women and the elderly. Sometimes, they smoke a lot in the plane, and the people who are not well, especially the elderly, not being used to the smell of smoke, would feel sick or become ill!

Like my chimney, it was built not that long ago, but it is now darkened. It is very, very dark. Can you imagine what is it like inside your windpipe? Smoking every day, with smoke going in and coming out, and then it is completely darkened inside! When we practice, we have to be clean. Smoke and ash build up inside, and we cannot clean it up. A chimney can be swept with a brush. How can a windpipe be swept? Do you understand? It would be very troublesome. (Audience laughs)

Always Maintain A Happy, Joyful Mind

Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai
At The Mid-Autumn Festival Three-Day Retreat

    In Hsihu Center, Formosa
    (Originally In Chinese)

Hearing people say that each person has a different emanated aura, a scientist (Dr. Kaths) made an experiment to prove it. He targeted his experiment on different kinds of people. For instance, he found a group of cheerful, always laughing, and positive thinking people, and then gathered samples of their exhaled air. A test showed that this kind of air is white in color. After that, he found some 'frustrated Buddhas' - people with knitted eyebrows and long faces - and tested the air that they breathed out. The color was totally different - greyish, and looked unpleasant. He continued to test it on some people who were always angry, and their exhaled air was deep yellow, reddish brown, or orange red; I mean very dark yellow, very dark in color! Finally, he performed the experiment on those people who always curse or slander others, or wish others to die! (Master laughs) A test on their exhaled air showed that it is black or brown in color, very dark brown. He then injected the dark brown air to the mice, which died just a few minutes later. However, those mice injected with another specimen of air survived. The mice who survived were those injected with the white or clear air, while the other group of mice injected with the black or brown air died very soon!

Oh! We all know about it, but we did not know that he could prove by experiments that the emanated aura of a person really exists! Shih Fu often said that, by sitting close to a person, you will share half of his karma. Therefore, we cannot say that there is no mutual karma! Sometimes, we went to one place and came back exhausted, but we may feel very comfortable after returning from another place. It is true that God is in each of us, but the aura emanating from us does not belong to God. Do you understand what I mean? It is not generated from the God quality deep within, but from the dark thoughts of our mind which is relatively outside. We have not touched the God inside! Although we own the treasure, we do not use it. So we are the same as a poor person. Do you understand what I mean?

This is the situation, and this is the reason you get tired when you have to mix around with people; not that there is no God inside them, but they do not give this quality to you. Instead, they give you the dark and filthy garbage bins outside. They do not let you go into their palace within, but only throw you the garbage at the doorstep.

How To Protect Yourselves From Being Contaminated

It is really great that someone finally manages to prove this today. It is comforting that we know this really exists. Otherwise, you just hear me talk about it. I know it from my inner wisdom, understand? However, it is safer to have scientific proof, so that you know the Master has said the right thing. I do not lie to you or try to frighten you, nor am I boasting something to make you fear me, or think that I am great. Whatever the Master has said, as time goes by, you will get verification by reading other books. Although I have not read that book or done those experiments, they talk about the same things, which is really great.

Should we really want to escape from the threatening atmosphere of this world, we must always concentrate our mind. However, it is very difficult to avoid, understand? They are too close to you, or we are busily engaged in other things so we cannot always protect ourselves much. Therefore, you must do some meditation every day when you come home to cleanse the contaminated atmosphere. This is why you feel comfortable after meditation. Or when we go to the Center for group meditation, we are unified as one, thinking positively and good, and having a very pure and incredible power, which will make us feel comfortable. When we come to the Center, do not bring any negative thoughts: no garbage, no frustrations, and no troublesome matters. Otherwise, we will contaminate other fellow practitioners, understand? Dump all the garbage outside the door. Should you wish to get it back later, pick it up when you go home, and no one will stop you. Just don't share it with others.

I heard that a certain temple in the Himalayas was miraculously responsive; any sick person can be cured by going there. It was because, never had anyone said one negative word in that temple. They always said good things, thought good things, so the influential power was great. Many people only feel happy when they come to the Center because more or less, we try our best to think good. Is that right?

Group meditation is serious, though someone may have come 'looking for sweethearts', but still it is group meditation. You should really meditate when you go to the group meditation, and not 'looking for sweethearts', understand? However, it is inevitable. I think some of you still do this. If you do, then cut it off quickly, okay? And stop creating trouble for fellow practitioners, or for Master or the monastic practitioners here.

Sometimes, it is better not to know the truth. When you know it, you will be frightened and do not want to go out; dare not go out or contact with people. However, never mind, we have the protective power! Simply recharge more after going home, at night, in day-time or in the morning, or replenish whenever we have time.

We are still better-off than the worldly people. You may go out and observe. Most people in the world are on the same levels, because they have the same ideal, and live together. More or less they will infect each other. If a person is exhaling black air, and you are standing close to him, naturally you will breathe in the air that the person emanated, right?

Therefore, you see those people in love look more and more like each other, because they breathe with the same nose. (Master and all laugh) It is troublesome. Sometimes, you really do not know how to avoid this.

This world is really distressing, very distressing. We may have acted correctly or wrongly, we are contaminated all the same. Fortunately, we still have the Quan Yin Method protecting us all the time. It is more difficult when we forget, so better not forget, and always recite the Holy Names. The more you meditate the better, and always think about the Holy Names within. Even when you cannot meditate, you should think about the Holy Names, then you can concentrate your mind better.

I will tell you a story to remind you to protect yourselves. How do you protect yourselves? Do not get miserable, and then contaminate others. Simply do not pollute me when you come to the Center. I am such a simple person, laughing cheerfully every day, except when I see you. (Laughter) So, be careful not to be a nuisance, because this is contagious. Understand?

For instance, you looked very miserable when you came here this week, with faces like horses; very long faces, like the sausages. While you were here, you infected me. Okay, I received it gladly, but you had recovered after passing it to me. When you come next week, I may still have not recovered. (Master and all laugh) Therefore, when you come to see me, I will pass it back to you, so when will this circle stop? Do you understand?

We should set up a screening process at the entrance to sort out the people with long faces. Everyone should bring a ruler. One is out if it is close to 30 cm; below 15 cm is still acceptable, or even 17 cm, but throw him out if it is 30 cm. Don't force me to play the bad guy, understand? Tell him on my behalf, or press him from above and below like a sandwich so his face will be shorter. Then, use two toothpicks to pull up his mouth corners. Should this fail then kick him out. Otherwise, everyone will get miserable together, which is really bad, especially when going to the group meditation.

It is all right if sometimes we are in a bad mood, but don't bring it to the Center. Other people only come to the group meditation once in a while, bearing great expectations, a blissful heart and lots of hope. They long to cleanse their karma and replenish more vitality so that for the coming week, they can struggle with all the obstacles outside. You come here to waste your time, waste the precious time and space. You also torture people's mentality, waste their energy, and interrupt their cultivation process. You can see how heavy your karma is. All right, so you know it.

Reminding Each Other To Be Happy

Why must we be cheerful, clean and pure? First, it is to protect ourselves. Second, to protect other people. If you infect him today, tomorrow he will infect you in return. In this way, our group can never be cleansed!

Therefore, from now on, when you come to the Center, drop all your lousy emotions in the garbage bin outside. There is plenty of garbage outside. Should you prefer, you may retrieve it later. No one wants your garbage. Is there anyone? No one will be that stupid, unless that person is a masochist.

Therefore, in the future, when you go to the Center, look out for anyone with a long face, then help him pull it up, understand? Or, you may tell him to go to the beauty salon; trim it by plastic surgery, either from above or below, just to make it shorter. If the mouth corners are drooping down, help him to pull it up - any method is okay. Just don't pull it too hard, or he might react, and both of you will violate the precepts. (Laughter)

Let us remind each other to be happy. We simply decide to be happy. Each time, as we reach the entrance of the Center, resolve to make ourselves laugh, not laughing loudly of course, or you will disturb the chicken barn next door, and the hens will stop laying eggs. (Laughter) Just put on a smiling face, smiling secretly, silently and beautifully. Just like what I am doing now. It is all right to show your teeth, just don't make any noise. Tell yourself to laugh! Or, you may tell yourself to go into the bathroom, look at the mirror and smile, until you can smile sweetly, prettily and happily. Otherwise, keep standing in there and practice your smile. Until when? Until your neighbor says you are okay. The two of you may go there together while checking each other, understand?

Another choice is to bring a ruler to measure the proper length of your smile. I can hardly set a standard in this respect, because each mouth is different. (Laughter) So, set your own standard.

Okay! Whenever we feel frustrated, try to remind each other. It will be nice if we can do this every day, but sometimes we might forget. Therefore, we begin from the Center. Smile as soon as you enter the door. You ask the contact persons to place a statue of the laughing Maitreya Buddha at each Center.

So, you see why there is a Maitreya Buddha in each temple. It serves to remind people to laugh. However, as time has gone by, they have forgotten. Now, they will cry whenever they see the Maitreya Buddha, and kneel down to pour out their problems. Not even the Maitreya Buddha can laugh any more! This is why the belly of Maitreya Buddha is getting bigger, because he has to swallow the problems of sentient beings! Let us not turn each other into a Maitreya Buddha by leaving all the garbage outside the Center and then laughing.

It is useful to force ourselves to laugh sometimes. It is because our body cells are very responsive; they only listen to command signals. Understand? When the body cells at the mouth laugh, all the cells in the body will laugh together. If you have a magnifying glass, you can really see the body cells laughing cheerfully. Naturally, our spirit will improve and our mood will get better. Try my method, and see you next week - if you can still laugh next week.

Okay, goodbye. All of you take care, and go home to practice how to laugh. Greet your family with a smiling face. At least, when you enter the door, you should laugh for a few seconds before going in. Better still if you can constantly maintain this smile. However, you should not make it a habit to always laugh aloud, otherwise people might think that you are idiots. From now on: no smile, no admittance. No smile, and your Initiation Identity Card will be confiscated. (Master and all laugh) This is a more effective blow. You have only a few kids, so you have no reason to be unable to laugh. I have so many children, yet I still can laugh. Ha! Ha!

Scientific experiments have demonstrated incredible ways to kill guinea pigs. Emotional upsets generate powerful and lethal toxins. Blood samples taken from persons experiencing intense fear or anger when injected into guinea pigs have killed them in less than two minutes. Imagine what these toxins can do to your own body. The toxins that fear, anger, frustration and stress produce not only kill guinea pigs but kill us off in a similar manner.

Excerpt from the book, "Being Happy!", written by Andrew Matthews, an American writer and artist.
    (Originally in English)

It is impossible to maintain good health while living in fear, anxiety and restlessness. Dr. Kaths has performed an experiment examining the composition of air exhaled by people. He used a test tube to retain the air exhaled from a person, which, after freezing, condenses into a liquid at the bottom of the tube. From his examinations, he found that for the cheerful people who always wear a smile, the color of their secretion is a beautiful lavender, or whitish gold. For people who are always angry, their secretion is pitch-dark or gray in color. Dr. Kaths had especially collected the secretions of particular kinds of people. When this group of people concentrated on cursing others, their secretion was a muddy brown or black. When this secretion was injected into a guinea pig, it was killed within five to six minutes. This phenomenon should be heeded by all.

Excerpt from the book, "Visit the Fourth Dimension", written by Japanese Transcendental Psychology expert Miwula Seiliu Hilomasa.

In Norman Cousins' book, "Anatomy of an Illness", he tells how he recovered from a crippling disease to resume a healthy, normal life. His main medicine - laughter in large doses. Cousins believed that his serious approach to life had precipitated his illness and figured he could reverse the condition through laughter. He demonstrated what people have said for years, "Laughter is the best medicine". When you laugh, all kinds of wonderful things happen to benefit your body and mind. Endorphins are released in your brain which give you a "natural high" and your respiratory system gets the kind of work-out that it may get from jogging.

Laughter relieves pain. You can only laugh when you are relaxed and the more relaxed you are the less pain you feel. In fact, you can't get ulcers and laugh at the same time - you have to choose one or the other. The same goes for other illnesses. We often get sick by taking ourselves and life too seriously. What we need to do is laugh to help us stay healthy.

The art of being happy involves being able to laugh at difficulties as soon as possible after they happen. One person, involved in the above situation, would resist laughing for two years. Another may decide that after two weeks it is time to stop crying and start laughing. Therefore, the first person gets to stay miserable for fifty times longer than the other one. And he chose to.

We all suffer misfortunes. Happy people choose to avoid waiting too long to see the funny side of their disappointments.

Let's remember that our own troubles always seem much bigger to us than to anyone else. If no-one else is losing sleep, maybe we don't need to either.

One of our major responsibilities toward others is to enjoy ourselves! When we are having fun, we feel better, we work better and people want to be around us. Life is not that serious. Let's take humor more seriously.

Dedication To World Peace - The First European Three-Day Retreat Held In Hamburg, Germany Master And Disciples Celebrating The Mid-Autumn Festival Together

    Dedication To World Peace

The First European Three-Day Retreat Held In Hamburg, Germany

Recorded By Fellow Initiate Lu, U.K.

Many European fellow initiates long very much to go to International Retreats, but they often miss the opportunity due to visa problems and other reasons. Therefore, they beseeched Master to hold a retreat in Europe, and Master consented immediately at the group meditation in Nice. This was undoubtedly the greatest news for the European initiates. Cherishing the rare opportunity to have a retreat with Master, several fellow initiates from mainland China travelled all the way from the United States to Europe. Under Master's blessing, their journey was full of miracles! Over three hundred fellow initiates from nearly twenty countries in Europe and America took part in the first European Three-Day Retreat. In the afternoon one day before the European 3-day Retreat, Master, wearing a light yellow dress, appeared at the Hamburg International Airport, accompanied by Her escorts. Fellow practitioners and devotional supporters rushed forward with overwhelming emotion to present flowers to the most beloved and venerated Master.

With a cheerful smile, Master greeted everyone cordially, and distributed blessed food to everyone present. The luckiest ones were the small initiates who could throw themselves into Master's arms. Everyone was intoxicated by Master's infinite love. Some fellow initiates had just flown in from other countries to join the retreat, and they were fortunate enough to meet Master at the Airport. After a brief but joyful gathering, Master proceeded to the camp site at Luneburg, and thus raised the curtain for the first International 3-day Retreat ever held in Europe.

Wherever Master Goes Is A Fairyland

That evening, the considerate and loving Master quietly went to visit the initiates at the camp site. She looked extremely graceful and noble, with escorts leading the way in front, the sky full of brilliant stars in the background and accompanied by a gentle breeze, as if She were descending on a ethereal cloud. The scene was truly one of a fairyland in the secular world. Master traversed the camp site without speaking a word because it was unnecessary, yet, the entire universe could feel Master's loving blessing.

Many fellow initiates were sleeping due to their exhausting journey, but we deeply believed that their souls were savouring that warm and beautiful night. For the liaison practitioners from the various European Centers, it was the first time they had ever convened such a grand international retreat; Master's cordial concern made them feel doubly spirited and vigorous in their work.

The three-day retreat formally commenced the next day. After the meditation session in the morning, an initiation was held in the afternoon. As Master did not come to Europe often, many truth aspirants seized this precious chance to receive the initiation, and then joined the retreat. Having finished the initiation, Master ignored Her own exhaustion to answer all questions raised by the new initiates. In the evening, Master gave a discourse, and then blessed the new initiates. She then meditated with everyone and prayed for world peace.

Heaven And Earth Are Touched By Master's Fearless Love

During the discourse, Master told us: Human life is ephemeral. It is the greatest blessing for the fellow initiates who could come to the 3-day retreat and see Master. Master had to utilize Her merits earned from many lives' of spiritual practice to help us, so that we could be here to see Her. Master does everything for our needs; She exhausted Her time, energy and money to meet us there. Therefore, we must treasure this opportunity, which is hard to encounter, once in billions of ages, to really practice diligently.

Master said that She was willing to give Her life if we could get liberation and enlightenment faster. Speaking on this point, Master wept quietly, and so did the fellow initiates, who were all extremely touched. At that moment, even heaven seemed to be stirred by Master's great fearless love, and it started to shower! Master's painstaking intent roused everyone and they meditated more diligently the next day.

In the afternoon, Master received the foreign initiates in turn. The first group called by Master was the initiates from China, who upon hearing the news, could not help shedding blissful tears profusely. (Those who can not come to Formosa due to political condition of the two countries) Cordially and gently, Master answered questions pertaining to spiritual practice asked by the initiates from China. The atmosphere was very happy and relaxed, and the initiates from China were most grateful to Master's immaculate love and concern. Master then received the initiates from Au Lac and the European countries, and filled each of them with total bliss and satisfaction.

    The Most Humorous Story-teller

That evening, Master appeared before everyone wearing a white evening gown, and a broad graceful smile. All the initiates crowded around the stage to listen to the pretty Mother bestowing them with bedside stories before they went to sleep. Master's narration was so lively and amusing, that She turned a serious Japanese Zen legend into a hilarious joke. Yet, after the tear inducing laughter, we also apprehended the profound meaning implied by the story, which made us truthfully admire Master's great wisdom.

On the last day of the three-day retreat, Master walked around the venue distributing blessed food to each initiate. She also especially blessed the working staff such as, interpreters, dharma guardians, and the kitchen helpers who worked during the 3-day retreat. Special permission was granted to the children and non-initiates, who longed to see Master but who could not join the retreat, to enter the meditation hall to see Master. They also received blessed food personally given by Master.

Amid the vast ocean of love, and the cheerful noises of blessed food distribution, the first International 3-day Retreat held in Europe was concluded.

Moments spent with Master are always short and precious. However, Master's infinite love has already fully charged fellow practitioners both physically and spiritually, which will remain with them until eternity.

Feedback From The European Three-Day Retreat

With Master's Help, It's 'Green Lights' All The Way Through

By Fellow Initiate Bai, Indiana, U.S.A.

During the European 3-day retreat, Master told us, "It is not easy at all for fellow practitioners to manage to attend the retreat, you must have overcome many difficulties; but you are not aware that Master power has already helped you dissolve many invisible obstacles."

My tears rolled down immediately when I heard this, because I knew it was true. It was all due to Master's blessings that enabled a miracle to occur so that I could attended this retreat. I am a foreign student in U.S.A. who comes from mainland China. Last June and July, due to a visa problem, I was not able to attend the retreat and see Master in Formosa, and was extremely upset about that. I had been longing for the opportunity to attend a retreat before my summer vacation ended. Upon obtaining the schedule of retreats, I was indeed excited, and prayed to Master, asking Her to help me to make it. When I began going through the procedures for travelling abroad, I came to know that my U.S. visa had expired, and I would have to go to China or a third country to apply for my visa. By the time I discovered that the retreat was to be held in Germany, there was not much time left for me to apply for a visa. I immediately called the Consulate General of Germany in Detroit, U.S.A. The Ambassador told me that it took at least four days to obtain the visa, but my re-entry visa for U.S.A. was a must. I said that I would go to Canada to apply for my U.S. visa, and told him that the reason I wanted to go to Germany was to attend a 3-day retreat conducted by Supreme Master Ching Hai to pray for world peace. The Ambassador immediately said, "That's great!", and told me that it was certain that my visa would be approved. I was pleasantly surprised, and couldn't help shedding tears, knowing that Master was helping me. The next morning, I want to see the German Ambassador. He promised to issue me the visa, but told me to obtain my visa at the German Embassy in Canada, because I did not have a returning visa to U.S.A. In my heart I prayed to Master to make him issue me the visa directly. Then the Ambassador immediately said that he would have another try.

Miraculously, after 30 minutes, my visa was approved! I gave him Master's sample booklet and magazine; he was very interested in Her teachings. Two other sisters obtained their visas through the help of this Ambassador as well. When their visas were approved, the Ambassador told them, "Please say hi to Supreme Master Ching Hai for me." I did not know that Master was to attend the European 3-day retreat until the night before I left for Hamburg. I was really overjoyed. The passengers sitting beside me on the airplane were all nice and friendly. They began inquiring about Master when seeing my necklace pendent with Her picture. I then introduced them to Master and the Quan Yin Method during the journey. Upon arriving at Hamburg Airport, I met some fellow initiates who had just arrived from Paris, London and other places, and learned that Master would arrive at Hamburg Airport, and that we could meet Her there! Hearing this, all our fatigue was swept away by great joy. The flower shop at the airport did exceptionally good business that day (fellow initiates all bought flowers from them).

We lined up in two rows, with flowers artistically arranged in various bouquets in our hands, respectfully awaiting the arrival of Master. The worker in the flower shop could not suppress her curiosity. Frequently, she stretched her neck to look for Master just as our fellow initiates did; she even moved the rack displaying merchandise from the shop door, inside, in order to allow for more space for Master's reception.

Master arrived, dressed in white, with lovely braided hair. She looked refreshing and charming. Many passers-by had the fortune to have a look at a real Buddha's graceful appearance and presence. The flower shop worker was so happy to see Master that her smile never left her face. Master blessed each of the initiates and would-be initiates on the spot.

Oh! Master, how can I describe my joy and happiness? Only because I was determined to attend the retreat, You not only blessed and protected me all the way, with 'green lights' everywhere, but You also allowed me to first meet You at the airport and receive the blessed candies from Your own hands! During the 3-day retreat, Master especially decided to meet the disciples from mainland China. When Quan Yin messengers announced this great news, I felt that Master's loving power was so strong that my tears immediately began to flow. Her endless loving power was so great that everyone wept on the spot. A sister told Master: when Master was scolding Chinese disciples the previous day, she suddenly felt that Master was the manifestation of God, she witnessed God's majesty, and her soul was shaken awake at that very moment. Master laughed and said, "Look, it is not that I want to scold you, but some people like that. Sentient beings' tastes are very diverse. Some like Master to wear nun's clothes, some like me wearing simple clothes, but some just like me in gorgeous clothes."

At that moment, I thought: I like You in white the most. Indeed, I admire with great fondness all the pictures of Master in white; and among over 100 sets of the Celestial Clothes in the Fashion Show, my favorite one is the pure white dress which is as beautiful as a veil of mist and fog. That night when meditating, I was shaken awake by a sister nearby. Upon opening my eyes, I was dumbfounded: Master appeared in my favorite white dress; She came walking down with Her hem fluttering. Her beauty was unequalled by anything I have ever witnessed. I was stunned in my admiration, even forgetting to clap my hands. Master understood our desire to be close to Her, and mercifully granted us an opportunity. No sooner had She taken Her seat on the stage, than She said, "We are too far away like this, you can sit over here." Boom! Instantly many ground and circled Master closely, on and below the stage.

Master then told us many Zen stories. When She asked, "Enough?" Everyone answered, "No!" How could it be enough? Accompanying such a beautiful Buddha, such understanding, consideration, humor and charm a master who always agrees to sentient beings' wishes. The disciples all became infatuated and intoxicated, and returned to our unadorned beauty and true nature.

That night before Master left us, I had the fortune to tell Her that I liked Her in white. Master said, "White color represents purity, that's why you like it." Yeah, in front of Master, everyone's purest nature emerges, their most beautiful heart-flowers all blossom.

    I Am Really Too Lucky!

By Fellow Initiate Wu, Indiana, U.S.A.

My Younger Sister Has Become A Fellow Sister!

When greeting Master at the Hamburg Airport, I unexpectedly came upon my younger sister who was studying and working in Holland. This was our first encounter since we were initiated. Owing to the difference in age and the long separation, there was no common language between me and my sister, nor were there any intimate feelings justified between us.

Having spent almost every moment with my sister during the retreat, I found that she had become very diligent after the initiation, and also very independent and capable. Very often, she even took care of me like an elder sister would. I also found it much easier to get close to my younger sister. I am very grateful to Master for having demolished the wall between us. Our relationship has become as close as all the brothers and sisters in the big Quan Yin family. Now we have an eternal common language--our venerated Master and the Quan Yin Method.

Fellow Initiates From China Received Special Blessing

On the second day of the retreat, Master received fellow initiates in groups. She specified that fellow initiates from mainland China would be the first group. All the Chinese fellow initiates, including my sister and I, cried with great emotion upon hearing this news. Being passport holders of mainland China, we could not obtain entry visas to Formosa to see Master at Hsihu. Aware of our intense yearning, Master had come thousands of miles to the European Retreat regardless of the toilsome journey, thus, satisfying the longing of the fellow initiates from China.

While seeing us, Master patiently answered all our questions. We were moved to tears right from the beginning, but soon, we burst into laughter amid Master's humorous words. Oh! Being close to Master and listening to Her words are always my happiest moments.

The truth is, our group of fellow initiates from mainland China is the luckiest lot among the Chinese fellow initiates. There are still many fellow initiates in China and Au Lac who have never seen Master. I can only hope that the day will soon come for the realization of the Golden Era, which Master described as having no passports or boundaries, because the whole world is just like one big family!

Master And Disciples Celebrating The Mid-Autumn Festival Together

    Compiled by Taipei News Group

Through the Mid-Autumn Festival 3-day Retreat, Master, the compassinate Mother, let each participating initiate savour life in heaven. Master loved them like a mother, and the disciples adored Her like children everyone was intoxicated in this love! One day in heaven is like one year on Earth. Having a retreat with Master for several days is superior to practicing alone at home for decades.

The aesthetic Mid-Autumn Festival gave us several days of continuous holidays, while Master also bestowed on us the most desirable gift of reunion -- She granted the request by the disciples to have an International Three-Day Retreat at Hsihu Center.

On the first day, local and overseas initiates reported early in the morning in an orderly and blissful manner. To provide fellow initiates with a comfortable environment for the Retreat, Master had especially instructed a series of beautifying projects to be completed before the retreat began. Many enchanting scenic spots were created in the already tranquil and beautiful Center. The old Main Hall had put on an elegant new look of a Chinese Palace; the kitchen was redecorated to resemble a warm European home; next to the Dragon Boat Lake was a spacious park highlighting both contemporary and classical styles. A zigzag bridge winded its way through the center of the lake, creating a fairy-tale scene. Pebbled paths and many fantastic flowers and plants decorate every corner, making everything so resplendent. Anything that one could see or reach had been made into masterpieces of love, crafted with selfless contribution.

    Overture Of Love

One day before the retreat began, the working staff moved into the Center to prepare for everything. On the next day, after completing the reporting procedure, tents were pitched, the kitchen prepared delicious food to satisfy the 'Bodhisattvas', and just as everyone was watching Master's video tapes, the news came that Master was on Her way back from the airport. Quickly, everyone lined up to welcome Her.

Having flown for twenty-four hours from Munich to Taipei, and gone through tedious transit procedures, Master still looked bright and spirited. She strolled through the crowd, blessing each of them, and cordially greeted everyone. After a short speech, despite the exhaustion of the journey and the scorching sun, Master walked around the place letting every initiate see Her clearly, thus satisfying their longing. Consequently, the Mid-Autumn Festival 3-day Retreat commenced amid this overture of love.

Master said that She could feel the pure hearts of the initiates, so She was very happy. Her bliss was the fellow initiates' bliss, and the noon meditation started in this harmonious ambience.

After a brief rest, Master drove to the basketball field in Her mini vehicle in the evening, and gave a delightful surprise to the initiates who were having their meals there. They put away their eating utensils and sat around Master's car to enjoy a light-hearted chat with Her. Grasping this rare opportunity, everyone was very happy to pour out their emotions directly to Master, who they missed so much. Master then drove to the water fountain, while briefly talking.

On the second day of the Mid-Autumn Festival the weather was hot, so Master considerately advised everyone to find some cool and shady place to meditate. Therefore, along the Nectar River, deep in the Bamboo Grove, at the peaceful Forest Main Hall, and around the Dragon Boat Lake, fellow initiates could be seen meditating with eyes closed while their souls were soaring high in heaven.

At dusk, everyone queued up happily to receive moon cakes and pomelos bestowed by Master, and then everyone got ready to enjoy a grand party. Fireworks of many colours were arranged on open ground to enchant the occasion with resplendent flares.

A Splendid Mid-Autumn Festival Evening Party

The music struck up, accompanied by the clamour of fire-crackers. Then beautiful fireworks penetrated the sky stirring every soul. At that moment, Master appeared as a Tang dynasty Empress riding in the imperial sedan chair and wearing the robe and crown. She was escorted by a large retinue of royal guards into the Main Hall with the dignity and majesty of a virtuous and compassionate King. Liaison practitioners from various centers dressed up as chancellors and generals and lined up on both sides; elegant and charming imperial concubines followed behind in their fluttering costumes. Master was smiling and waving Her hands to greet everyone. Many people were so touched that their tears rolled down immediately. With their palms closed, they were intoxicated in a rendezvous beyond space and time, which awakened ancient memories!

When Master sat on Her Dragon Throne on the stage, the performances began. First, initiates portraying diplomats from various countries paid their respects, followed by the ancient beauty Wang Zhao Jun of the Han Dynasty who presented offerings to the Empress. The ancient beauty adored the wise and divine King so much that she roused and descended from heaven to present this tribute.

An English Princess wearing a glorious costume knelt down and bowed. Master remarked humorously, "The beauty does not have to kneel!"

The gift from Fu Sang (Japan) was Sun Cakes. Master laughed, "This was exported from Kaohsiung and then imported again. You see, our native product is so nice! Originally, they are to be served at tea time, but they have become the National Treasure of Japan!"

A Korean beauty, the Captain Hook of United States, and the natives of Peng Lai Fairy Island (Formosa), all paid their respects by presenting offerings in succession, and wished the Tang Empress longevity. Then, they respectfully requested their Majesty to shift to the 'Royal Garden', where the main program would be performed.

A Feng Yang Flower Drum Dance performed by the Dharma Guard Group, who were disguised as females, won the first round of applause. A native initiate from the A-Mei tribe sang sweetly and clearly a beautiful song. The Eight Immortals descended from heaven, and presented Master with the 'Peach of Immortality' grown in the chamber of the Mother Goddess. Master took a bite, and claimed that it was delicious!

Other brilliant performances included instrumentals, Japanese folklore stories, and Chinese and foreign dances, which absolutely fascinated everyone. The National Dance Suite by the Taipei fellow initiates was particularly rich in content, and won thunderous applause. Dreamlike movements complimented the fairy clothes and a bank of clouds added to the mystical mood. Everyone felt as if they were in the Heavenly Palace, and were oblivious of time! Appreciating this series of brilliant performances, the Holy Empress gave them an 'okay' hand gesture. The atmosphere was so joyous and harmonious on and off the stage.

The climax of the night began when the Holy Empress moved to the Zigzag Bridge on the Dragon Boat Lake to watch the fireworks. The night sky was lit up by the colourful flares, which announced an auspicious message: "The True Empress - Enlightened Master - mercifully bestows graces on the whole world."

Master then returned to the Main Hall to give a discourse, while the disciples were rejoicing their great blessing of having a reunion with an enlightened master on a festival evening.

Master said, "Thank you for your great efforts. The program tonight was splendid. I wish you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival, and fulfilment in spiritual cultivation every day, just like the full moon tonight." "You, the fellow practitioners, have been meditating sincerely in these few days, and your actions, speech and thoughts are pure and clean. This is why the ambience is so excellent, so that we can enjoy these beautiful arrangements."

Master had been in many grand events around the world, including regal occasions, but She felt our program here was the most brilliant. Unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy this marvellous show with us because worldly people are complicated in mind, and they may not cherish it. With deep feelings, Master said that if the world leaders or royalty could come to enjoy the evening with us, they would surely be delighted. And Master added that they would have greater wisdom to manage their countries afterwards. It was a pity that we could only enjoy it ourselves.

Ending Up With The Words Of Wisdom

The Three-Day Retreat concluded after the meditation session on the morning of the third day. Since it was Sunday, many guests, would-be initiates, and other initiates who could not join the retreat began pouring into the Center, all wishing to see Master.

At noon, Master, wearing a white Cheongsam and with a tall bun on Her hair, came to see the initiates in the Main Hall. Master specially allowed the liaison practitioners from various centers, and the initiates who came to work at the Center, to sit around Her while she talked.

As Master pointed out some historical truths with Her words of wisdom, all the initiates listened with undivided attention as if they were in a trance. Master said that a spiritual practitioner should use wisdom to discover the truth since many historical records may not be true. It needs great wisdom to comment on a person; to judge from the result of his action and not by the action itself, or his outer appearance.

Master also advised everyone to avoid going to extremes in spiritual practice, and to handle things with flexibility. Sometimes, when praised by others, one may feel uncomfortable, tense and uneasy. He needs to always protect his reputation and honour. When we truly want to help people and do things silently, we will not mind about other people's opinions.

Very soon, it was time to say goodbye. Master, the loving mother, could detect the disciples' reluctance to part from Her. Therefore, She gave one more speech in the Bamboo Grove. Master asked us to learn from Maitreya Buddha: greet people with a smiling face, and tolerate others with a 'big belly' (Maitreya Buddha's big belly was said to contain everything). Master said, when visiting the Center we should not bring along any mental garbage to contaminate fellow initiates, and should always smile. Master made an amusing remark: "Nobody wearing a face longer than 20 cm will be allowed to enter the Center."

Happy moments passed by very quickly. Our time together had lasted three days, but why was everyone still very unwilling to leave? Yet, fully loaded with gifts for the soul, fellow initiates packed their luggage and strode off with a firm and swift stride while bidding farewell to the beloved Master. Because : See You next time!

    Echoes Of The Three-Day Retreat

    Softness And Toughness

By Fellow Initiate Cheng, Taipei, Formosa

All these years, I have been waiting for a chance to participate in the entertainment show.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival evening party, I had the honor to provide a bit of entertainment for Master and the public. The opportunity filled my heart with gratitude. When the applause sounded from downstage and dear Master also gestured with an OK sign, I realized instantaneously that the roles of "performers" and "spectators" were only part of a grand show directed by God where everyone is blessed without any discrimination.

The dance was divided into five different elements: soft and tough, pure and simple, heroic and elegant. The element I was to perform was soft. The movements were not difficult, but trying to express the softness was not simple. If my heart was not soft enough then the act would seem to be empty. If too soft then it would lack vitality and would seem to be too weak.

During practice, I pondered the role for a long time. Only when I performed on stage did I fully understand. In the naturally formed universe, everything would have yin and yang gathering together. The apparent "soft" portion would also have the aspects of toughness. For example, to convey softness one would need great strength in the waist.

Just like Emperor Master, in the midst of Her majestic, solemn, impressive and dignified manner, there is still the element of compassion. Her gaze was firm yet gentle and Her demeanor was elegant yet relaxed!

Suddenly I had realized the problem with my practice and with my life after all these years. It seemed so difficult yet it was so simple - an imbalance of yin and yang.

After the three-day retreat, I felt that I had awakened from a long hibernation, shedding a layer of old skin and smelling the breath of spring. I have been reborn and I am growing.

    The Ugly Duckling Transforms Into

    A Swan

By Fellow Initiate Kang, Taipei, Formosa

At the evening party of the Mid-Autumn Festival, being a man, I played the role of a female to perform a Drum Dance which originated in Feng Yang in Northeast China. Master helped me change my original rude and impetuous character. I have also realized that all the jobs behind the curtain, including hair-styling and make-up, need a lot of attention.

On the stage, we learned to use lithe and

delicate movements to make the dance more beautiful. There were some mistakes in the performance, but they made the audience laughed happily. We completely achieved our objective to entertain.

We may be "ugly ducklings" now, nourished by the great love of the Quan Yin Method, yet with persistent effort we will one day transform into "beautiful swans".

Enlightenment Is The Tool For Everything

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
    Apr.14, 1993 (Originally in English)
This article was published in Central Daily News, Formosa on Sep. 24, 1995I'm so overwhelmed by your love and the welcome program. I was very tired after my journey and also many days of sleeplessness. But I feel very, very blessed and joyful to join your congregation tonight. I am sure we will know each other as we have known each other. And there is nothing new to all of us tonight, but let's just remind each other of what we might have forgotten or what we have placed in some very remote corner of our soul and didn't have the opportunity to reopen it. That is the enlightenment, enlightening nature of our great selves. I'm overwhelmed not only because of your love, but because of the realization that I am sitting before the Buddhas and God's manifestation, and that brought tears of joy into my heart.

It's not always that I am blessed with such realization while sitting with a multitude of people. It's just tonight it happened, and it is beautiful, especially when sometimes I was also kind of discouraged. In the last few days, I was thinking whether what I am doing is truly worthwhile. But tonight, because of your love and your very highly developed spiritual wisdom, I feel I will continue. I know I will continue. (Applause) And if in the near future during my tour, if I have any success in bringing people happiness and God realization, I will remember Washington D.C.'s people. Thank you so much. (Applause) I really need it tonight. It's very good. (Applause)

Enlightenment Is Already There Waiting For A Master To Open It

You see, enlightenment is already within us, therefore whatever our fellow initiate credited to me, I should not accept because it's all yours. Whatever greatness, whatever blessing you receive during the course of development in your spiritual training or rediscovery, it is all yours. But because humility is the nature of a highly developed spiritual brotherhood, they always credited all the miraculous power, all the blessings to the master, whoever that master may be that happened to be experienced in the path and show them to rediscover it themselves. If you were not already enlightened, if your nature were not Buddha, I would never be able to make you a Buddha. If God is not already within yourselves, I would never be able to show you God inside you. I cannot make a stone into a diamond however long I polish it, you understand!

So with all my humbleness, I just would like to tell you that you are very great. You are the Supreme Masters, and we are all one. There is nothing I should teach you except to point to you your precious jewel that you have placed in your pocket and you have forgotten. Because you are too busy looking elsewhere for it. Many a time you do that. You put things in your pocket, your eye glasses or money or whatever important things, and you forgot. It's so near to you. (Master laughs.) You keep looking and search the whole house, every corner; you never find it; and so you thought seeking for your own treasure is so difficult. Actually it is not true. Because we just don't know where to look for it, and that is all. And some friends stand around and just say, " Hey, it's in your pocket." That is the job of the Master, so-called Master. Therefore the Masters since ancient time, if they are called by the name, by the title "Master," by the disciples, actually they are just like one of us. They should be very humble and they have all the human qualities that we have and they do not know that they are the Masters. But because of the experiences of the disciples, people credited that is a Master. Just like we say, " By your fruit shall you be known." So anyhow, "Master" or "not Master," it is not important. The important thing is that experienced friend which we call Master can show us where our greatness is. Then we make use of it.

The Difference Between The Enlightened And Non-enlightened

There is so much vast difference between an enlightened person and a non-enlightened person, even though both of them are exactly the same in quality, have exactly the same wisdom, and possess the same greatness. I just could not tell you how different. I just know it is different; and many of our disciples know that after initiation. Right? (Audience: "Yes.") Some of you would know. And then after that, you talk to other people who are not yet initiated, have not yet rediscovered their, the partial quality of their wisdom, they will see a vast difference between them. Even though in the outlook, there's no distinction. Enlightenment can be lightened onto someone who already step inside the house; doesn't matter how near he is to the door, and how far he has already advanced into the depth of the house in order to discover how much treasure there is inside. Once he steps inside the house, he is out of the cold, out of the danger of the wolves, the tigers and all other natural disasters should they come by.

There is a very big difference. Once we are in the house, we know what is inside. If we are near the door, we know at least the inner interior design. And if we step further into different rooms of our house, we will discover the treasures, and all the furniture, all the precious things that are within the house. And we may go back outside and tell the people what's inside, And the people outside of the house may listen to the story and may repeat it again to someone else that something's there, such and such are in the house. But there is a difference between repeating and seeing and enjoying; and also, deriving the benefit from the safety of being inside the house.

Some people ask me, "It's okay! I don't need enlightenment, what for?" "Is that okay not to be enlightened?" I said," Yes, yes, okay." (Master laughs.) There is no choice anyhow. But when we are outside the house, sometimes it is safe, sometimes it is sunny, but sometimes it is raining, sometimes it is typhoon, a lot of things happen. And once we know we have a house, we can even step out sometimes. But whenever we want or it is necessary, we step inside. There are such things, wonderful things inside the chamber of our soul that no worldly treasures could equal, And nothing of this world can bring such happiness to us as when we discover our true greatness.

Everyone Has A Share Of This Wisdom

The more we discover how great we are, the more humble we become. (Master laughs.) And that is a very paradoxical thing, but it is like that. Because we will become like a child, we will become like a very innocent person. The great sage is like a very innocent person. And it seems like you can tell him anything you want about your talent, about your ambition, about your intelligence, about your degrees, and he will never object you. It's not that he will always try to force his wisdom upon you. It only comes naturally by circumstances or by request. And after speaking, most probably the so-called Master will forget everything that has been spoken completely; maybe just remember one or two sentences or maybe none because the wisdom comes from the universal storehouse is the common use of all beings. It doesn't belong to one person or a group of any persons. It belongs to the ignorant as well as the enlightened. It belongs to the child as well as to an aged senior citizen. Everyone has a share of this wisdom only if we truly want to know it.

By knowing this wisdom, we do not forsake the world. We will not lack of the enjoyment of the world. But actually we enjoy the world more when the opportunity is there, and even when the opportunity is not there, we will be happy all the same. And that's the difference. That is the only difference because if we do not know our enlightened nature, we always crave for some things that will bring us happiness, or we think that will bring us happiness. Therefore we become sometimes ambitious, seeking fame and name, seeking properties, seeking beauty, seeking ephemeral love, etc., thinking these will bring us happiness, until we realize that these only breed sorrow most of the time.

Only when we are truly enlightened, then we can enjoy anything. Whatever comes, we enjoy. The good things come, then we take it as a gift from God and we enjoy whole-heartedly without any guilt, without any reservation, without any obstacles whatsoever in our heart or in our thinking. Because the nature of the enlightened person is very free, very carefree, very easy, just like a child. If you give him something good, he accepts it. He will not think that you want to trick him, or whether he deserves it or not. He just accepts. And when the circumstance does not allow that we have comfort or richness in life then we are also happy carry on that way. We have no desire for material greatness, but that doesn't mean that we do not strive to work for the society, and that we do not try our best to fulfill our obligations as a citizen of the world. We do, we do all the same. We do more effectively and with all willingness to contribute our part to the whole world. The difference is that we do without desire for reward, without desire for praise. And should we fail, or should even people misunderstand us of our goodwill, we still can bear it. We will not have any suffering in our heart. Many of my disciples have told me, I mean our fellow practitioners, that after enlightenment they are much different than before. They know, they know more than before. They understand many things that they never understood before. And they are so different from what they were before. Because I have forgotten what it's like to be before or to be after enlightenment, so sometimes it's difficult for me to know what they were talking about. (Master laughs.) But then sometimes I happen to meet and talk, or stay and integrate with some of the non-initiate people, then I realize what they were talking about; then I know what's the difference between an enlightened person and a not enlightened person. That is no discrimination, no, no. It's just a statement of what it is of the reality . Therfore it's not a proud statement, it's just a realization of the difference between a person who steps inside the house and the person outside.

The Greatest Way Of A Gentleman Is Enlightenment

If I have not the opportunity to truly have a very deep understanding with the non-initiated people sometimes, I would have forgotten, because most often I see people as myself, I forgot whether I am enlightened or they are not enlightened. I have never remembered these things when I meet people. And that's why sometimes apart from feeling some kind of discouraged during my mission, I also felt in my heart that there is no need to teach anyone. There's no need to run around the world, no need to answer the invitation of my disciples worldwide and tire myself out on the airplane, smoking airplane, and crowded airport and all that, and hectic schedule. Because I thought there's no need to do it, because I don't see any necessity. But then just when I think like that, sometimes the almighty power would remind me that it is necessary. Because there is a big difference between knowing you have a treasure and making use of it and just knowing you have a treasure but do not know where and how to use it. There is a big difference. Therefore, if I continue to travel around the world according to the sincere request of the disciples, it is because of these instances that I know some people do not know that they are great, and they long to know.

Not because we want to be proud of our greatness, but it is a duty to know our heritage. We cannot just be born into this world, live a few decades of hectic schooling, working, sweating, earning money, struggling with children and family problems, and then "kaput," finished, (laughter) and nothing more to that, nothing more to life, nothing more to the great meaning of human life. And worse still, at the time of leaving this world, we suffer. We suffer because of the attachment with our family members, we suffer because we do not know where we are going, we suffer because of the fear of the unknown. And the whole family members or the beloved ones just standing around helpless, seeing us suffering.

Therefore the great way of a gentleman is enlightenment. We must know where we come from and where we are going, very clearly, very decisively, because we are great human beings. We live a life of a hero. We walk the life of God on earth. We should not live like slaves to our money, to our possessions, to our whatever desires that the world has labored, found a way to stick it onto our mind. We were not born with desires, we were not born with hatred, we were not born with race discrimination. We were born from innocence and beauty so we should remain like that. And we should even be wiser, apart from being innocent. That's the way of a gentleman, that's the way of the great beings.

What Jesus And Buddha Could do, We can do, too

If we worship Jesus, if we adore Buddha, if we long to worship, to bow to the sages of the Himalayas of the ancient time, then we should know that we could be one of them. There is no difference between a sage and ourselves. Only one hair apart, very thin. (Master laughs.) And when we traverse that, we are there in the circle of sainthood. And if we stay behind, just one hair apart, we are ignorant beings bowing down to all pressures of the world, fearing all kind of things, persons and beings, knowing not what we are before and after our life. Even we have eyes, but we are just like the blind. We have ears but we are just like being deaf. Because heavenly teachings we do not hear. Heavenly kingdom we do not see; our greatness we cannot perceive. It is a pity if we continue our life like that.

We want so much to help the world. We want so much to bring peace into our earth, to make it into heaven, but how do we do it if we don't have wisdom? How do we do it if we are not above average? How can our head keep from being wet if we are not above water? So enlightenment is the tool for everything in this life and the life after. We'll travel far and wide into the galaxies of the universe, we'll know things by which even the most brilliant scientists in this world are dumbfounded. That is the ability of a human being. A true human being is not flesh and bones only. It's not the outer appearances of beauty and charm, but it is the great storage of wisdom, of almighty power that could move mountains, and do all kinds of marvel. Whatever Jesus had done is child's play. Whatever Buddha had cared to demonstrate while he was on earth is just a joke, because what he can, what Jesus can, what Buddha can, is above all that even. It's billion, trillion times greater than that; and we can. That's what I discovered and that's what I would like to remind you. As soon as we pray, we draw our attention inside, and don't care much for the material comforts and possessions - it doesn't mean we leave them. We stay in the same house, eat the food that we can afford, wear the clothes that we think fit for the occasions, but our attention is not there anymore; that's the important thing. Not the things in themselves are the obstacles to our sainthood, it is our attention that's the obstacle. Therefore, the attention we should withdraw inwards and then we know everything that Jesus knows, that Buddha knows, and all the sages of old and future will know. Because our nature is like that.

Just like you put the diamond in your pocket and if you look all over, even if you look all over the world, you'll never find it. Not only your house. You search the whole world, you will never find the diamond. You don't know where it is. (Master laughs.) Meanwhile, all the while it's in your pocket. The world should not be in the state that it is right now if all of us are enlightened, or at least half of us are enlightened, and better still, the majority of us are enlightened. And then no need to talk about peace, peace will come. No need to want anything because we have wisdom. "Wisdom is the Lord. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." The Lord is within ourselves, that is our almighty power which stays there dormant, and anytime we can awaken it and make use of it, at least to our own contentment.

    Enlightenment Brings Happy Lives

The enlightened persons never know uncontentment, never know want, never know unhappiness; at least not for long, just probably in the beginning of the practice when we are not yet stable in our habits, and the mind still has the upper hand. So sometimes we might think we want this and that, but then immediately we realize our mistake. Not like before enlightenment, we don't even realize that we have desire, let alone stopping it. Therefore the difference is very obvious.

All these I tell you from my experiences. It doesn't mean after enlightenment you sit pretty, cross legged somewhere in the sofa and all things become heaven. No. We still have to undergo a little bit of give and take of the karma, the law of cause and retribution, while we are on earth. But we have great power behind backing us up, that doesn't matter what kind of rain or typhoon, we are very stable, safe, secure, contented. Because we know nothing can happen to life eternal. Something may happen to our body but not the real self. If we want another body, we create one. And that is a very, very definite feeling of the enlightened person. The enlightened person does many things, but never feels he is doing anything. Even physically, gives away many things but he never feels that he is a giver, endures many things but he never feels that he has patience. He might show his temperament now and again, but he never feels guilty because it is fit for the occasion. Therefore the way of the enlightened person is free, is happy, and is wise. That is the life that all of us should remember because that is our self.

It's not the life that we think we are now, full of worry about every little thing, about electric bill and about telephone check, and every little thing makes us trouble. After enlightenment we still have all these bills coming, (Master and all laugh) no doubt. God will not take them away because it's yours. (Master laughs.) But the attitude and the means to overcome these are entirely different. We'll find life more relaxed, more easy to meet with all demands from all sides. If we truly, truly, truly sincerely seek for our wisdom, that's what I can promise because I have learned to know this myself. It's not from books. It is not from any teacher. It is from my own experience.

Therefore, whatever I share with you is absolutely true, private, and no cost, because it's from me. I don't borrow it from the bank, no need for interest. (Master and all laugh.) And then you will come to realize all these and more for yourselves according to the capacity of your demand, and of your work, and of the way the universal brotherhood sees fit to give you because of your mission in life, your position in this world. You see sometimes when the masters reach mastership, they are equal. Even that, but you see slight differences between masters and masters. You can see that through their discourses or through the progress of their disciples or through the way he expresses his understanding about the inner realization. Therefore there is a slight difference between masters even. Why? Not because they are different in the quality, it's just because of the different back-ground or positions. Such a master could make use of so much, so he has that much or he draws that much from within himself to give out. And the other masters in different circumstances, in different generations, different nations, will need more or less of different kinds of quality, of speech, of explanation. Therefore we have many of the so-called religious doctrines. And many different names or different religions which point to the same truth.

After enlightenment we will know that very definitely. We will know the underlying principle of all religions is the same. We will know what they taught when they were alive, the founders of these religions. We will know Buddha and Jesus taught just Quan Yin Method. We will know what Lao-tzu talked in the Tao Te Ching is about Quan Yin Method, about the light and the sound of heaven which lift us up above mundane ideals, above all the pettiness of our computer mind in order that we meet with the higher level of consciousness, and then we know ourselves. Then we know God. I am just so happy today, I don't know what I'm saying is suitable for you or not. I just blab, blab on. (Master laughs and audience applauds) I think I just stop by now and then you might ask me questions and I have the opportunity to explain further. Is that Okay? Yeah? Thank you so much. (Applause)

Q: Jesus is no longer on this planet earth. Does he have power to reach to those who believe in Him now? Can we have two masters at the same time? A master who left this earth and a master who is still on this planet earth and will leave this earth?

M: Yeah. We can. We can. Fortunate are those who meet the masters who are still living but who also are the inner master at the same time. But also while you meet the living master, you can also meet the ascended master if you reach up to the level where Jesus resides at this moment, you can see Him. Many of our disciples saw Jesus and many of our disciples saw Buddhas. Isn't that so? Are there any disciples here...? Is that not true? Yeah? (Fellow initiates say : Yes!) Oh, they say "Yes". Anyhow, sometimes the Buddhists will see Jesus or Mother Mary and sometimes Christians will see Buddhas or Mohammed.

Q: How can I go down suppressing my ambitions which have been burdening and obsessing and bothering me so much?

M: It is because we are not enlightened and the nature of our ambition is the urge for enlightenment, actually. It's nothing else; nothing of a very base nature. It is because we know in our subconscious that we are something greater than that, we used to be the boss, we used to be the 'President of the universe.' Therefore it is difficult to remain lowly while we are on earth. That's why we have greed, we have ambition. So after enlightenment, you will know how to handle your ambition for the good use of your life as well as the world. Nothing bad about ambition. Just the way we handle it. If we handle it wisely with wisdom, it will be very good use.

Q: What is happiness and how long can it last?

M: (Master laughs). All of you know that the worldly happiness is ephemeral. It lasts how long is according to person and circumstances. But the true happiness which derives from our true nature is everlasting. That's what we would like to introduce to you which is already within you.

Quan Yin Method Takes You To The Source Of All Beings

Q: What are the steps to enlightenment and what level of enlightenment does this technique take you to?

M: It will take you to the source of all beings, where you came from and where all beings will return. Between this earthly level and that absolute level, there are five levels of consciousness or different planes of existence, and if we, through the practice of the heavenly light and sound and the guidance of the experienced teacher, pass through these five levels, then we arrive there, at the house of the masters where all masters came from and return after the mission, and where we also will come from in order to help other beings should we desire to return to Earth or any other planet in the universe. So the first step is to get initiation and then everything else will come.

Q: Is the only way to go to God through initiation in the light and sound?

M: Yeah, that's the last part of the journey. You have many other ways also, but if you don't reach there, then you are not there. Just like the door of the house. Doesn't matter from which road you travel, if you do not pass through that gate, you do not enter the house, yeah? So, we start from there because we are more fortunate.

Q: Is there more than one initiation?

M: No, no. Only one physically but many inwardly, inside. See, it depends on the individual. For example, at the time of initiation the master or the representative of the master gives the same verbal instructions, but the initiation doesn't come from these instructions. The initiation comes from within, from the awakening of your own nature. And even then the levels are different. Therefore two persons sitting in the same place or next to each other will have entirely different levels. And therefore, also, the master will from inside teach individually different, and only he knows. Only he inside knows what the master teaches him, and his experience is different from his wife or his kids or his father or brothers, etc. So you can call that different initiations if you wish, but I would say that it is the continuation of learning from different individuals.

Q: Master Ching Hai, I have a time, a strong desire to become non-existent. Please share your thoughts, if there is any, on this desire.

M: Oh, I also like that. (Master laughs.) I also like to be non-existent so that I don't have to travel and I don't have to be such a great "Master" and all this and that and others. But since we are already in this existence, we stay. We stay and see what happens next. Meanwhile we get enlightenment so we can be in the existence level and the non-existence level at the same time. But that non-existence level is by no means empty, by no means nothingness, It is a life full of richness, full of splendor, full of glory, full of happiness, full of creative energy. We will enjoy that life more than the so-called existing life which we know as a human life here. But we can have both at the same time. It's very wonderful. Very wonderful.

Q: My children are very important to me. After initiation will I be able to continue to love them?... And not merely share an existence with them? What changes will occur in that regard?

M: Oh, my God. (Laughter) You have become like a child. Do all my disciples throw away their children or what do they do with them? What did you do with all your children after initiation? Can you love them? (Audience: "Love them more.") They said they love them more than before, so you are safe, okay? Keep your children. Don't worry. I don't want any. (Master laughs and audience applauds).

Q: Is there such a phenomenon as soul-mates in this world? If so, what is the spiritual significance of this for people involved?

M: Soul-mates are someone that when you meet him or her, you feel a very great attraction to each other and that you both will be able to complement each other in life and especially in spiritual process. That is what's called soul-mates. But in the world of non-duality, there's no soul, no mates. So, it's just the talk of this world. So whoever you feel that is very attractive to you and very helpful to your daily life activities as well as spiritual endeavor, then that is your soul-mate, ... while we are here, if we need a mate at all. Alright?

True Master Awakens Your True Inner Self

Q: How can we tell true masters from false masters?

M: Oh, that I don't know. I haven't met any false one. I've met only true masters. False or true, it's up to you. There are many ways to discern a true master. When the so-called master just clings to one part of the truth and forsakes the rest and then teaches the disciples only one part of that from the whole truth and then we call him a false master. But actually the name is not very correct. Maybe he is a kind of "partial master." "Part-time master" (Master and all laugh), but not false. And when a master teaches you the whole truth that is within yourself and awakens that which already exists within yourself, that is the true master because he awakens the true master within yourself. That is the true master. And what is your true nature? What is the true master within yourself? That is God! That is the holy spirit which dwells within your church, your temple. (body) And when that God manifests, we can hear the teaching through the heavenly music. We can see him through visions, through abundant illumination like thousands of suns sometimes. That is our true nature when it is awakened. So if any master can awaken these heavenly wisdom, vibration and heavenly light within you which is your self nature, which is your self mastership, then that is a true master. It takes one to know one.

Q: Regarding the five requirements you must follow in order to be initiated, what would happen if you don't follow them?

M: When you don't follow them, what happens is that you don't follow! What else can I do? Then try again. Okay? If you think that it's good for you and good for others and it's a kind of protective fence around our spiritual sublimity then we keep them, okay, and don't make damage to your just-grown sublimity. But otherwise no one is there to condemn you or do anything to you except your own conscience. So try to live up to that and whenever you fall, stand up; try again.

Q: What is the easiest and safest path to self-realization and god-realization?

M: This method. Did they say it? "Immediate Enlightenment" "Quan Yin Method". That's the best, the easiest and the quickest. You get enlightened immediately without any preparation, without any cost, without any condition today after the lecture. Okay? And if you don't get enlightenment immediately, money-back guarantee. (Laughter & applause) Oh, by the way... by the way, there's no money-back guarantee because we don't charge a penny. (Laughter and applause.)

Q: How should we protect ourselves from the violence of nature and the violence of men?

M: We don't need to protect ourselves. What do we have that we should protect? Before you were born, what do you have? After you die, what do you possess? What is it that's so valuable that we should protect? Throw everything away. Let it be. Whatever comes will come. If your body dies, your body decays, you have thousands, billions more. Don't worry about anything. If the possession should be yours, you can't even get rid of it. If that girl should be your fiance, no one can snatch her away. If that job is to be yours, ordained by heaven, no one can replace it. Don't worry about it, just relax. Get enlightenment. (Applause) All these fears keep us from living a happy, present moment. Therefore all guilt, all conflict, all hypocrisism arise out of this fear of the self, of the ego self. That I have this, I have that, I have fame, I can't lose face, I can't do that because I am in this position. I can't scold people because I am the master, I am supposed to be very graceful, very soft spoken, very gentle, etc. Just throw everything away and be at the moment. Whatever requires at that moment, do it wholeheartedly with faith in God and with faith in the whole plan of the universal project. Understand? (Audience: Yes.)

Q: Christianity teaches us we are all sinners; are we still sinners when enlightened? If so, does it ever end, our being sinners?

M: Yes, we are sinners, because we believe we are. Because we have no way to raise ourselves above the sinful level, above the mud. If you are in the mud, of course you look muddy, no? If you rise up, what the mud has to do with you, whether it's there or not, understand? So rise up; be enlightened. (Applause)

Q: How can an enlightened human being who is living in the society which is in conflict help to remove the conflicts in their society?

M: Very difficult. We can only remove the conflict within ourselves. If everyone does that, there is no conflict to remove. Therefore even Jesus was so great, Buddha was so grand, but they couldn't remove the conflict within their own borders. And even sometimes the disasters will also affect their lives. It is because the majority of the people of the world were not at peace, were not enlightened; therefore enlightenment is the only requirement for any illness of this world, for any wars, for any conflict. Nothing else is necessary.

True Nature Is Without Anything, No Dust Can Cling To It

Q: I've heard of many people who said that when you are enlightened, you are supposed to shave your hair and wear no make-up. (Laughter) What do you think of this saying and comment.

M: What do you think, is that correct? (Audience: No!) No, they say " No! " (Laughter & applause) I'll give you one "A" for you. (Master and all laugh.) Beautiful, beautiful, I love that. It's very beautiful; you are very open, very enlightened; at least to some degree. If you still cling your attention to anything of this world, whether it's there or not there, you obstruct yourself, right? Your nature is without anything. No dust can cling to your nature, okay? No make-up can cover your Buddha nature; no lipstick can blur away the light of heaven. If you have Eye, you'll see I am radiating light now. Even if I put the whole charcoal boxes on my face, make myself black, I am still very white and bright. (Applause) So if you shave your head, then you are enlightened? Is that right? So why don't you do it? It's so easy. (Laughter) All of you do it. Steve, your hair is too long for the enlightenment. (Laughter & applause) God doesn't care whether your hair is long or short. Stupid. (Laughter) Otherwise all the beautiful Miss Universes can not get enlightenment, or what? (Master laughs.) And if we say that, all the barber shops, all the beauty salons will close. We create unemployment even more. (Laughter) Is that the life of an enlightened person? (Applause) Oh, oh, if I preach like that, Mr. Clinton will not be happy. (Laughter) He will not give me permission to preach in America.

Q: The ego is a strong force, how does one overcome the ego?

M: By being enlightened. Ego is the clinging attention to a small self, which is like, "Oh! I am a doctor. I am a scientist. I am a teacher. I am such and such intelligent and high position person." That is the ego. But when we know our greater self, that loses inside. Because we are not only the doctor, we are God, or at least God's children; we are Buddha, okay? That's the only way to melt the ego within the greater frame of the self.

Q: What is the source of the world?

M: Hum. (Master laughs.) It takes too long to research, yeah? Why don't you just live today, get enlightenment and then we'll see for ourselves? Because if I tell you, it takes a long time. You know our world, at least geographically speaking, has been in existence for trillions of years. And if you want to make a research about it, I'll never have time for lecture. Is that not so? But the truth about the world in existence lies within ourselves. We have a library inside, and when we get to the second level, we can look at it, and then we know everything. Not only about this world but about many worlds in the universe.

Q: If one is initiated by you, Supreme Master Ching Hai, do you remain your disciples forever? What is the job of a disciple?

M: The job of our disciples is to become a master. (Laughter) Therefore you don't need to be my disciple forever. You don't even need to be my disciple. You are already a master, just you don't know it, so I tell you how to recognize yourself again. That's all, yeah? There is no disciple actually. It is just a name that we call ourselves in this physical world.

Q: Could you please explain to me what the mind is?

M: The mind is nothing but a bundle of attached thinking and ideas and information that we gather in our daily relationship with other beings. And that we call "me" or the "mind" and then we cling to all that, and say : " Oh, I am like that. I brush my teeth three times a day. That's me," "I never apologize even when I am wrong. It's me. I don't fear anything. It's me," etc., etc. But all these are what? That's just collective information. Before you were born, you didn't brush your teeth; you have no teeth. (Laughter) For example. You understand? Therefore mind is nothing, and we would be very unwise to listen to this kind of so-called mind. It's just a collected habit, information from others, from societies and from our own inter-relationships and then we think we are like that. "Oh, I have to eat this, I have to drink coffee, because it's me, my way of life, it's me." But who is that me? Who drinks the coffee before you were born? Coffee wasn't even there hundreds of years ago. Therefore these things are very unreliable and very nonsensical. They are not you, and that is what most of us call "me." That is the mind.

Q: Once you become enlightened, can you lose consciousness of your enlightenment?

M: Oh, yes, possible. Yes, when you sleep. Sometimes when you meditate, and then you sleep, the light comes, the enlightenment comes but you are not aware of it . And when you are not asleep, then you are aware of it, okay?

Q: How do we quickly give peace to our previously made enemies?

M: Hug him and kiss him; give him a candy. (Laughter & applause) That's what I did this morning because some people cannot be enlightened by words or by explanation or by initiation even. Some people need that just direct love. Physical as well as mental, as well as emotional.

Q: How do I escape away from my flesh and lose desire toward the opposite sex?

M: Oh, don't get away from it. (Laughter) Otherwise we have no more children. (Master laughs.) Just stay cool; have one partner only, okay? If you have a soul mate that you found that's good for you, and three dimensional love, physical, emotional and mental, it's fine . And then the so-called fleshly desire will lose some of its strong hold on you after we regulated with a stable relationship or within marriage. You understand? So don't worry, it's just a beginning. And afterwards it will die down, it will lose its attraction. So just stay cool. Therefore have one partner, it would be enough. (Applause)

Q: How to be best help to someone who is experiencing serious illness?

M: The car has troubles sometimes . The car sometimes burns out, sometimes the tire blows out, sometimes the outskirts is scratched or something. What do you do with the car? Try to repair it . So the same with the body. And if, sometimes the car is irreparable, it costs more to repair than to buy a new one, then buy a new one, is that not so? The same with the body. Whatever you can do with the car, this car - the body, do it. If you can not, just leave it and God will give you a new car . New body. (Laughter & applause) That's why most people pay so much attention to this car, and they have all kinds of fear and troubles because of this car. Kill each other for survival just also because of this car. Hate each other just because of this car. Do many things that are against our own conscience just because of this car. Therefore we have to realize it is only an instrument, just like a car that you buy.

Q: If a person has a desire to get liberation or go beyond the three worlds, is this desire different than ordinary desire?

M: Yes, it is different because by having that desire alone, all other desires die down. Otherwise we have too many desires, you see? And then we have troubles because we are pulled from different directions. Whereas if we have only one upward desire, we are pulled up, and then we will be happy. We reach our high nature.

Q: Is love intoxicating, and if so, must we refrain from it according Precept Number Five?

M: Oh, no, no, no! Intoxication means drugs, alcohol, and all the things that make you become an addict, make you a slave into, make a slave out of you, also blur your vision, and damage your brain cells and impair your ability to think, to see and to do things clearly. These are drugs. These are intoxicants.

Q: In what way can we get energy from meditation?

M: The effortless way. The energy from meditation is already within ourselves by the power at the time of initiation through a Master, it is awakened. Therefore when we do the meditation in our so-called method which has no method at all, we get the direct energy without doing anything. It's a very effortless effort. That is the best way ,the natural way because we get what we have. We don't borrow. We don't try. We don't steal, we don't force things to happen, but things coming and happening because it's already there.

Q: Is enlightenment another term for Zen Buddhism?

M: Yes ,if you need that title so much.

Q: How likely is it that the few enlightened humans on this earth now can affect the awakening of the sleeping or distracted masses?

M: Yes, yes. They will have some impact, yes. But of course it's best when the majority of the people are all awakened.

    Immediate Enlightenment After Initiation

Q: Would you please address the issue of karma and how we dissolve our previous karmic debts and how that relates to enlightenment?

M: How to resolve the previous debts, right? Karma is the Sanskrit term for the law of "As you sow, so shall you reap," which is the law of the lower universe . And when the Master gives you initiation, he pulls you up further. Therefore, the Karma downstairs can be burnt and doesn't affect you. Just leave a little bit for you to carry on this life, which is already smoothed out and lubricated by the Master's power. Therefore after initiation you have no more stored karma so you don't have to be reborn again if you don't want to. If you want to be reborn again, it's very easy. We can create karma or we can borrow it (Master laughs) from many other sentient beings in order to come down . So initiation is the destroying of all karmas in the past. So leave no more opportunity for the beings to come back in the future.

Q: What do you mean by "Immediate Enlightenment" after initiation?

M: I mean "Immediate" Enlightenment. "Instant," like that, okay? (Master snaps her fingers.) If I show you something which is in your pocket, can you immediately take it out or not? (Audience: "Yes.") That is what it is. Because you have it within you. I just pointed to you where it is and so you get it.

Q: Master, there are billions of people alive today who would pass from this life without being initiated into your program. Does this mean that they can not reach enlightenment in this lifetime by any other means?

M: Yes, they can, they can; but the degree is different, you see? And sometimes in deep prayer, they have a glimpse of enlightenment, but that is flickering and sometimes it's gone again. And they don't know; again they are back into ignorance. But initiation means permanent. You know definitely where the switch is, and you switch it on any time you want. And you are inside the circle of light . But enlightenment from other ways, it is not always permanent and sometimes it's dangerous because people do not know how to handle the newly discovered energy. Therefore some people become mentally disturbed and all kinds of queer things, or abusing of the magical power which is from a lower level and become anything, you know, magician, healers, any kind without reaching the highest level of consciousness. Because without the guidance of the Master, we do not know where we are heading to, and then we stumble around and we play around with all kinds of things, and sometimes it's dangerous.

Because the path of enlightenment is also full of tricks and pitfalls which we should avoid. And with an experienced guide, it's easier, faster, safer. But what can we do? The world is like that; that's why it is the world. If the worldly people are all enlightened, we don't call this earth "world," we call it "heaven," understand? And the atmosphere around us will be different, Everything will be different. And then we don't even need to work for food, we don't even need to want anything. All things will be there just like in heaven because our merit will be different, will be many folds, thousand folds. Up to now just a few millions of people are enlightened, The merit is not enough to cover the whole earth population, understand? Therefore we still have disasters, we still have wars even though it's less than before. And all the politicalisms already lessen in its intensity, and the threat of the fourth war, fourth world war or fifth world war is far away now, understand? Because the majority of the people have a higher awareness at the present century, due to the mass media, the broadcasting system of Master's enlightening message around the world, and due to the large numbers of people who join into the enlightened circle of the sage. Therefore our world is better.

Q: Jesus spoke not just such wonderful ideas as peace, love and eternal life, but also about the scary idea of eternal punishment. Do you believe that God will ever condemn someone to eternal punishment?

M: No. He condemns himself. If he refuses light, then he stays in darkness. And as long as he refuses it, as long he will stay in darkness . He can stay eternally, if he refuses the light eternally. So it's up to the individual, huh? (Applause)

Q: Someone by the name of Princess would like to thank you for a very uplifting birthday.

    M: Oh! Happy birthday.

Q: As human beings on earth, we have to fulfill earthly obligations such as food, clothing, a roof over our heads, make enough to pay the internal revenue service. (Laughter) How could we break away from these and start nurturing your spiritual needs?

M: You still keep the roof above your head. Don't take the roof away. (Master and all laugh.) Just get enlightenment. Don't worry! I stay in a tent, and I'm still alright . Sometimes the tent blows away, no roof is there, but I'm still okay. We had a meditation hall, very large, accomodating about seven thousand people. But last year, some people talked something and then it's pulled down. Okay, we let it get pulled down. We did not protest. We did not complain. We did not explain our, how it says, ungrounded accusation. We didn't bother . And then we plan to take, to bring a rain coat when it rains, and bring an umbrella when it shines. Just to sit there and meditate, all the same. But when we are enlightened, all the things will be okay also. Jesus has promised, "Seek you first the kingdom of God, and all the things shall be added unto you." I promise you the same . (Applause)

Q: Is it true that if a woman doesn't have a child of her own, she doesn't have a complete life?

M: He wants a nonsensical answer or what? Do you agree? (Audience: "No!") They say, "No!" Okay! If God doesn't ordain you to go through the terrible labor pain, then you should be grateful for His blessing, (applause) right? We have enough children in the world .

Q: My mind is hard to quiet for meditation, it's like a monkey who wants to run and play but not sit quietly. How does your meditation help quiet the mind to realize the true self?

M: I just put the mind to sleep (laughter) by the light and the sound. The music will nurse him to sleep. The light will comfort him, and then he is fast asleep. Only the soul is awakened. But nevertheless, continue with your meditation if you don't want to join us and you will get used to it a little bit more. But the thing is, if you sit in meditation, you use all your effort, concentrate on the breath, on the heart chakra, or whatever chakra, all over chakra, and you get nothing in return; then of course the mind would get bored. He will say, "Hey, what you're doing? You make me sit here for what? I want to see cinema. It's even better than this. I want to go and drink coffee and talk with friends. It's better." You see what I mean? I had a fellow practitioner, she is pretty old, about sixty. Oh, no, fifty something . And before she met me, she had many other masters and they taught her many methods -- continue with the breath, sit in Zen for fifteen hours a day, and all that. Eat one meal. And she said she sat and sat until she can't sit no more and she can get nothing. Therefore she can't bear it. And after she got enlightenment, she said, "Oh, sometimes she sat for four hours." And she was so happy, tremendously happy. Because of her happiness, her whole family of eight members are all happy, and they told me this. Even though they were not initiated. And they tell me how beneficial it is, my work. So they encourage me to continue. The non-initiates.

Q: Why is being a vegetarian so important to enlightenment?

M: It is important to you, hum? You can get enlightenment also without being a vegetarian because I don't require you to be vegetarian before initiation but after only. You get enlightened all the same through the grace of the Master. But we have to keep a loving attitude towards all beings, because they are ourselves. If you eat all your body's members, afterwards you realize you have nothing left, understand, yeah? And also we should not be so sinking into the material taste, but to be emerged in the bliss of heaven. Every being deserves life. Therefore we grant them the happiness of survival. (Applause)

Q: I believe I could achieve closer relationship to God, if I could erase the idea of God in the sense of being a person. Will Quan Yin help me in this regard?

M: Oh, yes, yes, yes. That is what it is for. We erase completely the separation, the individual self, and then we don't do but God does through us.

Q: I can not believe that intelligence exists on this planet alone. Do you?

M: Yes, true. It doesn't. It does exist in all planets . More or less degree different to the location; it depends on the location. There are some other planets more intelligent than us. There are some other planets less intelligent than us.

Q: How am I to know my mission in life?

M: Oh, I suggest you get enlightened first and then you can see better.

Q: Do you work with the white brotherhood or the universal brotherhood?

M: Yes, I also work with the "black" brotherhood. (Laughter & applause) We don't discriminate. Of course he meant the white brotherhood. It is the title for those enlightened beings who help the whole universe. It was just a joke only. There was no black or white over there. (Master and all laugh.)

Q: When one becomes a Master, will he or she ever have fear, doubt or anger? We call Jesus a Master, however, according to the Bible, Jesus was frightened the night before he was crucified. And before his death, Jesus cried, "Why God deserted me?" Please explain, if Jesus had fear and doubt, how can we have no fear and doubt?

M: Yeah, they probably would have fear and doubt, but that fear and doubt is not deep rooted like us, you understand? If Jesus had no fear of the crucifixion, then his sacrifice was not so great. He had fear, but he accepted, understand? Whereby we have fear and we run away and we try to blame it on others or we try to escape, we try to put that cross on someone else. That is the difference. We might have fear. We might have emotion, but we can withdraw it anytime or we can make use of the fear or emotion to the benefit of other beings. After enlightenment, all the feelings, all the emotions are still there, because we are made to have these in order to use them to understand other brothers and sisters. If you have no feeling, no emotion, how can you understand human beings? How can you help them; understand? But the fears of the Master are different. The fears of the Master sometimes are also affected by the fear of the disciples. He takes the fear from the disciples so the disciples are fearless but the Master will take some degree of that fear. But that is only very shallow and not deep rooted. It's only illusionary. And the Master on one hand has the fear but on the other hand definitely has no fear, you understand what I mean? He knows he has to have fear but he doesn't fear the fear. (Applause)

Q: What does Quan Yin really mean? Please explain.

M: Quan Yin in our group means the observation of the inner word, inner teaching, inner music, heavenly music.

Q: Can love be truly unconditional? If God loves those who don't sin and loves and forgives those who do, why are we spending our life trying to avoid sin?

M: Because it hurts us, not because it hurts God. Whenever we do something that we know is sinful or not correct, we hurt ourselves. Our conscience will scold us, make us trouble. (Master and all laugh.) Therefore we try to avoid it . God loves all alike. Therefore the sun shines on all. The rain doesn't detest those poor or sick or sinful . It's just we ourselves are responsible for the feeling of separation between us and God if we do something unrighteous. Therefore we should avoid it. Also it is a duty of ourselves when we live within this world. We have interrelationship between each other; we have to keep an orderly society, okay?

Q: The beings that live on other planets or those that come in UFO's, do they share the same fate as human beings, the same vulnerability to suffering, the same need to reach enlightenment?

M: Yes, some, to some degree. But less so, less than our earthly earthians because they are more advanced. They are more close to the Father, they have more light, more wisdom.

Q: Once one becomes initiated, does one need to denounce one's religion?

M: No, no, no. Please not. We say that within initiation, you don't need to change your profession, you don't need to change your way of life, you don't have to change your religion, No problem, don't change anything. Just eat vegetarian, that's all.

Q: Will we meet our beloved pets and animal friends in heaven after our life's journey is over?

M: Yes, if you want them. (Master and all laugh.) If you want them and if you are enlightened, you can take them along . But if you are not, you have no force to bring them. You have no power. You couldn't even bring you yourself to where you want, let alone your pets .

Q: What's the purpose of epidemic diseases such as malaria, AIDS, etc. Are humans interfering with the natural process by trying to find cures for these diseases?

M: You find some of this and other disease will breed itself out. Only when man realizes that he should surrender to God, to the Almighty power which is within ourselves. Only when man realizes that in him there is a great healing power of all diseases and he should rely on that power alone, then all the diseases will cease. All these are warnings, warnings to tell that we should return to God.

Q: How long does it take to become enlightened to reach the highest level or God realization?

M: It depends on you. How diligent you are, how much you want it, and also it depends on the Master. Is the Master powerful enough to take you through these levels of consciousness and lead you to where you want to be ?

Q: How many kinds of Samadhi levels are there?

M: Wow... Many, many. There are many levels of consciousness, hence also many levels of samadhi. But the last one is the non-Samadhi Samadhi. It means you carry on working in the world just like an ordinary person, but at the same time, you are always in Samadhi, and that doesn't smell, (Master and all laugh) doesn't give out any odor that you can smell, the person is in Samadhi. That is the highest Samadhi.

Q: Can one separate religions and science successfully and believe in both? I mean by this, can I believe in God and evolution at the same time?

M: Sure, sure, sure. The evolutionary theory supports the spiritual progress of mankind. It is the same; very similar in science and religious theories. The only difference is that sometimes science reaches only a certain height and stops there and religion is further and broader. (Applause)

The Eternal Life And The Law Of The Universe

Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai at Harvard University, Boston, U.S.A.

October 27, 1989 (Originally In English)

This article was published in China Times, Formosa on Sep. 1995

My brothers and sisters, I am very happy and honored to be with you tonight at this very old, respected and famous University of America and of the world. I have long admired and heard of the name of Harvard University. So, I am feeling very honored to be here tonight. This is due to the generosity of the administration of the college and also to the help of Mr. Tavanty and many others. When I saw you, I saw your glittering faces and shining purity from your hearts, I feel happy. So, I hope that this meeting, which started very well, will end splendidly; that I may serve you something within two hours' or three hours' lecture; that I may satisfy some of your inmost longing for God or Buddha nature or the Tao, or that you may have a little memory of who you are or where you have come from.

Now, this section of this university is the law. People here study the law of the nation, or nations, mainly study the American law, no? The law of American country. Is that right? (Audience: Yes.) So every country has different laws, but mainly to protect human's rights, to protect the order of the society, and that people are living harmoniously together. That is the purpose of the law of every nation. Now, the law of every nation, of course, depends on the character, the traditions and the wishes of the majority of the people in that country. They may agree together to bring such and such laws into practice in order to protect the lives of the people at large. Now when we look at our human stand-point, the laws are made by humans. But when we look from a transcendental view which is above human capacity, then we see sometimes, even though laws are made by people, they are governed by some other kind of invisible force. This invisible force we call in Sanskrit "karma." Karma is the Sanskrit name for the law of causes and retributions. Like we say in the Bible, in Christian terminology, "As you sow, so shall you reap." So when some Christian people question me that only the Buddhists believe in karma, I smile and tell them the Christians also believe in karma.

The Universe Is Governed By Universal Laws

Every good and grand religion has to teach people the law of karma. Otherwise, why do they bother to teach people to do good and be good, if we have no retribution later or any at all, or after-life at all ? Why bother to be good, to do good? Because if you are bad, you are kind of naughty and sinful, you still only have this life. So the law of karma and also consequently the law of reincarnation is very, very common. And every religion openly or secretly or I mean not hintingly, teaches this kind of law. It is the same like we have the law in every nation in order to protect the order of the society. The law of the universe is also there to protect the order and the well-being of all beings in the universe.

If we live in a country, we must know a little bit about the law of that country in order to live in harmony, also not to harm ourselves by committing some or transgressing the law. Now, when we think it over, we are not only living in a nation, but we are also living in the universe. And every nation is a kind of a room in a big mansion. So therefore it is an obligation to us, also to have to know a little bit about the universal law. After we study the law of different nations we might notice that sometimes one law in this nation doesn't apply to the other nation. For example, in our country like Au Lac, or maybe America, you can have only one wife and one husband. That is the law. Is it so in America also? (Audience: Yes.) Now if you have a second or a third, your wife or husband can take you to court and make trouble.

In Tibet, it is entirely different. Now a woman can have many husbands. One woman can marry the whole brothers of one family. No, I'm not joking. You may read it yourselves. You know if you read the books by Swami Vivekananda. Have you read any? Some of them, no? He told his experience about this. He said when he was shocked and asked a brother why they are doing such a thing. Why are they married to only one woman, five or six brothers. And the brother said: "In Tibet, it is considered selfish not to share any good thing with your brothers." So then he keeps pondering about the relativity of law and sometimes morality in this world.

Now in every country, we have to live up to the law of that country in order not to cause problems, heartbreaks to ourselves and to the others. So, we cannot say, "Well, Tibetans are like that, so we Americans learn to do the same." We can not. Because we Americans are Americans. We have our own emotions, our own background of tradition, and our own judgment. We can't just imitate anyone at all. The same like the Au Lac people, the Chinese, or any other country's people. They cannot imitate the other country's tradition. They may respect their laws. But there are other kinds of invisible laws concerning emotions and a way of living that they can not imitate.

The Law Of The Universe Is Ever Abiding

Then now we consider that when we live in every nation, we have to follow that nation's law. So now when we are in the universe, we must also follow our universal law. That law will protect us from degrading into a lower grade of existence. For example, when we are in a country, and we commit some crimes or transgress some law, we will be put in jail or have some kind of fine. No? (Audience: Yes.) Now if we live in this universe and we commit something that is not suitable to the law of the universe, then we also have to be put in some kind of other existence which is not very pleasurable for us. That is what we call karma, the law of retribution, "As you sow, so shall you reap."

Therefore, when we want to live in harmony and do not incur displeasurable situations for ourselves, we should study some universal law. Universal law is not made by man, and is not changeable like human's law. When we see the human's law, it varies from country to country. And even the standard of morality varies from country to country. So it is hard to tell people in one country to accept the other country's law. But the universal law is always and always the same. For example, in the Bible it is stated that, "Thou shall not kill. Thou shall not commit adultery. Thou shall not steal. Thou shall love thy neighbor, love thy enemy, etc...." These will never change.

If we want to know God or our so-called Buddha nature, God or Buddha nature, for me, is the same thing. I have experienced that thing. You may call it God or Buddha nature. I know it is the same thing, just a different way of speaking. Now, if we want to experience our Godly nature or Buddha nature, or what we call the Real Face, we have to follow this law. And to follow this law is not the only thing that we must do. But that is the precondition if we want to know God or we want to know Buddha nature. So in the Bible, it is said, "Verily, I say to you, except you are born again, except you become a child, you can not enter the kingdom of God." In Taoism, Lao Tzu also said that we have to be pure again as a child.

Also in Buddhism, one of our great Patriarchs was Hui Neng. Hui Neng was the sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in China. But he was originally, historically Au Lac born. Now I will not argue about this, because the Chinese wanted to claim him. So we also offer to them. It is all right. He is universal anyhow, but just for your information. Because I have to speak the truth, always speak the truth. If you want to know more about who he is, you can talk to me later. We don't want to discuss about his birth place or birth rights, just a little mentioning. Now, he said like this, "When I meditate, I only look into my own fault, I don't look into the others' fault." That means you become pure, you don't criticize others, you are just like a child. Now, aren't they the same sayings? Yes? (Audience: Yes, they are.)

You are right. Because anyone who is enlightened and who has a glimpse or many glimpses into the true nature of Godhood or Buddhahood will say and express the same opinion. They can not say otherwise. They can only say the truth and nothing but the truth. The truth may be strange, may be unfamiliar to many people. But nevertheless, very familiar to those who have wisdom and who are already feeling acquainted with the truth. We may say to ourselves, "I have never learned anything before"; "I have never been to church"; "I have never been to any Buddhist temple." "I haven't even read any Sutras." But that doesn't mean you do not know the truth. You might have known them or might have known the truth already in your previous life. Now it will take just a little more water for the seed to germinate again.

Exploit The Brain Power To Fully Develop Our Underlying Power

I have just mentioned about Master Hui Neng. He was illiterate. He couldn't read, couldn't write. But he was famous for many centuries and even more famous now, since the Zen Buddhism, or Ch'an or the China Buddhism is making its way to the West. Because the God nature or the kingdom of God is within us, or the Buddha nature is inborn within us. This is what we call "wisdom" in scientific terminology, or what we explain as the 95 percent of the capability that we have not used. Understand that? Because the scientists have proved that we use only 5 percent of our wisdom, of our brain capacity. The one who can use 100 percent of his wisdom or intelligence, that is the Buddha, that is the Christ, that is the Lao-Tze, that is the Krishna or Mohammed, or whoever you believe has the greatest brain power in our world. They are the ones who know the secret of access into the whole kingdom of our intelligence. That is what we call the kingdom of God.

Everything lies within ourselves. The Nirvana is the same thing. Buddhas, Christ are all born out of this kingdom of God. No one has been born without this kingdom of God or without this Buddha nature, just like the waves are born from the ocean. Now, is there any way to gain control over this 100 percent of our intelligence? Yes, there is the way. There are many ways. There are short ways, long ways, big ways, small ways, easy ways and difficult ways. Some people do them with prayers, fasting, austerities or all kinds of effort. These things we have read in the books of ancient wisdom. How people sacrificed everything in order to find God and to find the Buddha nature. But nowadays, if we follow these rigorous paths, it is too hard, too time-consuming. We can't just go into the jungle and leave the society behind.

In the ancient time, people had less desires and less comfort in life. Even though they wanted, they couldn't have it. Nowadays we have more temptation due to more comfort. Sometimes, we don't want this and that. But the neighbor has it, and the wife will not let us rest until she obtained the same, or the husband vice versa. In the olden days, people would be satisfied if they had just a few clothes or a little bit thing to eat. There were no newspapers, communication, no TV, or not such-like. Therefore people were not tempted to want more things. So their time was more in plenty. They could use it to practice on their hobby like to find God.

To Find God Is The Most Pleasurable Hobby

Now, to find God is also a hobby, anyhow. For me, it is a hobby. It is a very pleasurable hobby. Now people have different hobbies, but the greatest hobby, they forget. That is how to find God, how to find the Buddha nature within. It is not as difficult to find God as to earn money, I may tell you. We work very hard, 8-10 hours a day, and even then it be squandered away very fast if we are not careful. And even if we are careful, we can make the ends meet a little bit, and a little bit more for the old age, nothing more. But if we find the kingdom of God, it lasts forever. Whatever intelligence, wisdom, happiness, joy we find, it will always be ours. Never ever will be squandered away. Never ever anyone can steal it from us. And even then our material gain will also be on the way. Therefore in the Bible, it is said, "Seek you first the kingdom of God, and then all the things shall be added unto you."

That is why the ancient people they know where the everlasting happiness is, so they practice a way of life, the Tao, practice the Buddhist way or the Christian way. You see, I was born as a Catholic and a Buddhist, both, so I have to speak for both. I hope you don't mind. Also since Dr. Tavanty already mentioned that we, the Au Lac people have the tradition of open-mindedness, freedom of thought, and freedom of belief. So I have to carry on our tradition to be faithful to our Au Lac tradition. In Au Lac a Catholic husband and a Buddhist wife go hand in hand to the church in the morning and go to the temple in the afternoon. Most of our people do not discriminate or make a big fuss about who is the best one and what is the highest religion. If you are happy with your religion, fine! I'm happy with mine. We may learn from each other some good points.

Anyhow, who are we to judge the Buddha? Who are we to judge Jesus Christ? We weren't even there then. We didn't even know how great they were, what did they do. We can judge from the good laws they left behind for us, from the good preachings, from the outstanding examples of their sacrifices and love. Then we know Jesus was all right. Then we know Buddha was great. We cannot criticize them in any way at all. For what they have done for humanity, neither of them should be criticized. Whoever follows Christ they should be a good Christian. Whoever follow the Buddha they should be a best Buddhist. That's all our duty. Not to criticize or not to compare.

Get Enlightenment And Behold God Immediately

So, therefore in every speech, I wouldn't emphasize people to follow me, to cut their hair to become a nun or to become a Buddhist even. If you are Christian, you remain there. If you are any at all, you remain there. Even if you are an atheist, I also try not to convince you the existence of God. I will only want to show you the existence of God or of the Buddha nature, and then you will believe. Because if we do not see God, if we do not see the Buddha nature within us, it is very difficult to believe, no? So we cannot blame the atheists for not believing in God. It's not everyone that are blessed with not seeing, however believing. So for some who are not believing by not seeing, we offer the opportunity to see God or to see Buddha nature. That is what we call immediate enlightenment.

Knowing your own nature, and knowing the kingdom of God within that we may believe. Because when we are enlightened, whether we are Christians, or Buddhists or Taoists, we find the same stuff, we find the same wisdom, the same kingdom, the same Nirvana. There is no difference. I have been there. I found no difference. It is one place, the same. Actually, to say "a place" is also a way of speaking only. But must not necessarily be a place if you are enlightened. It is a state of mind. It is a higher level of consciousness, of thinking, of knowing, of understanding. That is also called the kingdom of God or the Buddha nature. It is not necessary that you fly to a beautiful place every day.

Enlightenment manifests itself in many ways. You may see beautiful places, planes of consciousness, planes of existence. Or you may manifest wisdom, and virtues in everyday life in order to serve yourself, your immediate family, your nation, and the whole world. When the famous Indian Master, Sri Ramakrishna was still alive, I expect that you heard his name, no? (Audience: Yes.) W e couldn't say he was a Buddhist, so don't say I advocate Buddhism only. I'm very equal-minded to every great saint.

So when he was alive, of course, he had many visions about God and he had many kinds of Samadhi. His disciples were also very eager to have similar kinds of Samadhi. I expect you know what Samadhi is, no? If you do not know, then I explain. Samadhi means when you are in a kind of higher level of consciousness and you lose outer connection with the world. You are in communion with God. You only see Heavenly Kingdom. You do not see the misery and the pain, and do not experience the misery and the pain of the world or any discomfort of your body and mind. You are in bliss, in ecstasy. That is what we call Samadhi. There are different levels though, but I'm not going into it tonight. If you have any questions later, we can go deeper into the subject.

Love Is An Experience Superior To Samadhi

Now his disciples saw him many times everyday in Samadhi, in a deep, blissful state, in deep Nirvana. They also wanted the same. One of his outstanding disciples was Swami Vivekananda, who is very famous in your country. He asked the Master, "Could I have the same level of attainment like you?" And he ask many times like that, because he had got none. So the Master scolded him, "You fool, there are higher levels than Samadhi." Now what is the higher level than Samadhi? That is of loving, of devotion. Love all creatures as our own selves. Love the enemies as friends. Love the neighbor. Love God above all, and surrender everything to God. That is higher than Samadhi.

But there is a trap here. We the Buddhists can also say that, we love the Buddha, worship the Buddha, and we love our neighbor, we love our friends, our enemies, that is it. But there is a difference between saying and really doing. Most of the human beings are incapable of such a great love, because we are not trained in this way.

Only enlightened people are capable of such a great love, and compassion and tolerance. Therefore we see in many nations in many periods of time, people always fighting over ideas, over territories, over financial benefit. But they always say that it is in the name of love for their nation, love for their religions, love for their groups or their kinsmen. Maybe it is true that they love their country, so they go and fight and invade other countries in order to benefit their own. But that is too small the love, it's too limited.

The love of Buddha and Christ includes the whole universe, no races, no colors, no finances, no status. Therefore, we see the disciples of the Buddha have many social positions, different social position, different in races, different in colors, different in social status, and different nationalities. The disciples of Christ also the same. All kinds of disciples, all kinds of nationalities, all kinds of personalities, all kinds of different beliefs will unite themselves under the wing of an enlightened Master. Because the enlightened Master's love is so great. It encompasses everything, and no one feels excluded. And such enlightened souls would never fight or side with one person or one nation or any sect or any religion but preach universal love, universal truth, and equality to all. Therefore, Jesus said, "All are children of God. Whatever I can do today, you can do even greater tomorrow." He didn't say, "I'm the only son of God." He said, "We are all the children of God. In the house of my Father, there are many mansions and all are welcome." So Buddha also say the same thing, "All of us can become Buddha. I have become Buddha, you will become Buddha. All beings have Buddha nature." These sayings denote similar ideas, understand? That is the equality of mankind in the eyes of God or in the wisdom of the Buddha.

We Can Enter The Kingdom Of God While Still Living On This Earth

I have not started my mission seriously before two years. When was the first initiation? That was in India. Must be in 1983, when I started, forced to start. Now is 1989. Six years, only six years since I started my mission. But I have found that truly everyone inherits the kingdom of God. Everyone has the Buddha nature. And everyone can see the Buddha nature in no time, provided he or she is willing to, is convinced that he and she can see and is willing to let a teacher help to open the door for them. All can see, all can enter into the Kingdom of God. There is no one, rich, poor, small, big, weak, strong, intelligent, stupid, has been refused into the kingdom of God. No one ever, not as far as I know. Therefore, I believe what Christ said is true. We just have to become a child again and then we can enter the Kingdom of God and right now on the earth. Why? Because the Bible says, "Lo and behold, the Kingdom of God is within you!" The Bible didn't say the Kingdom of God is very far away, 20,000 light years distance. (Master & everyone laugh.) No! No! No! It says, "The Kingdom of God is within you." And the Buddha said, "The Buddha is within you." So now both of them saying the same thing. If we want to find the Buddha, if we want to find God, we have to go within.

But how to become a child? It is not easy, we think. Truly it's not easy, if we do it all by ourselves, but if we have the grace of God and the blessings of the living Buddha. The living Buddha is not the body. It is the power of love that flows into one body and to bless the whole world, understand that? So when the Buddha was alive, he said he was Buddha. It doesn't mean he was proud of his own personality, his ego as Buddha. No! No! It means he already destroyed his own ego. He had no longer an ordinary "I," but he was one with the Father, one with the universe, with the creative force. So when Jesus said "I'm the son of God, I and my Father are one," it didn't mean that he was very arrogant and proud of himself as an individual ego-self. But he knows that he had lost himself, and merged into the ocean of consciousness of the great wisdom.

So, how to become a child? It's very easy. We need a so-called cleansing process. First we must vow to follow the Commandments of the Bible or the Buddhist scriptures again. They both say similar things. The first in the Bible is "You shall not kill." In Buddhism, also, you do not kill. And in Hinduism also the same--- ahimsa, no harm to other living beings--- that means ahimsa. From that ahimsa stems the Commandments of the Bible, of the Buddhist Sutras. Christ also had been in India for nineteen years. Buddha also had to learn first from the Vedic scriptures. Then he became Buddha by his own right. So, if we follow the Commandments of the Bible or the Buddhist scriptures and we start to change our way of life, then from that day on, also by the grace of God, we will be cleansed, be purified like a child. And then when we are purified at that moment, we see the light of God, we see the Kingdom of God or so-called Buddha nature.

So when Jesus was alive, he give people baptism, to baptize people. But even he himself had to go through the process of baptism. He said, "Let the law be done." Why did he have to do that? Even though he was already great, and John the Baptist knew he was great. But because he knew that he had to set an example of humility, of believing in grace of God to the rest of humanity. All his whole life is an example of humility. The Buddha Shakyamuni also the same. Shakyamuni was a prince, very rich in all means, very talented. He could have the whole nation, and luxury. But he went around forty nine years, even after his enlightenment, to beg. His begging doesn't mean that he couldn't work or he is unable to work. Just to show many thing, many examples to humanity. The first is to show us the desirelessness for the world's possessions. The second is to show us that we all have to depend on each other in order to live. No one is higher, no one is lower. He was the first one to preach equality, to break down the caste system of the untouchable idea in India. He taught by his own example and humility. He didn't only preach by mouth, by words, but he taught by his life example.

Embody The Great Love Of Christ Into Your Life

Every great Master does that. Jesus also did the same. He walked barefoot. He had nowhere to lay his head. Now in our days, in these modern days of our time, we couldn't follow exactly like Buddha or like Jesus. But we could follow it in our hearts their ways of living. We have to feel a detachment for this world, and that is also renunciation. We live in the world, but we live without the world. We shouldn't crave so much for the material comforts. We have them just to sustain our life, but knowing in our heart truly that the greatest ones like Buddha and Jesus never care for them. We follow Buddha in this way, by detachment, by desirelessness. We follow Christ in this way by detachment, by desirelessness, and also by love for our people.

Now, the American people have shown some of their Christianity love, of the Christ love in some of the world's interactions with other countries. For example, the American country has accepted many refugees from different nations. That is a part of Christ love. That is how we follow Christ. And as for the Au Lac people, I also have to thank the American sisters and brothers who have open their arms and received some of our truly in need refugees from Au Lac. That is also a part of Buddha's compassion. Therefore, I believe that if you are a good Christian, you are also a good Buddhist. There is no difference between a Christian and a Buddhist, as long as we do good to others.

Therefore, I never discriminate between the Buddhist believers and Christian believers. Christian people did good to mankind in many ways, and Buddhist people did good to mankind also in many ways, just maybe different ways of doing and working. Take care that I do not go too far into this political situation. But I cannot help not to express my opinion. Actually because if we cannot make use practically what we learned from Christianity or what we learn from Buddhism, then what is the point? Is that right? So, we show our religious mind through our own actions. Therefore if we say something about the world's situation, and the amnesty, and the compassion of the American people or other countries, that's also very fit! This fits in a religious lecture.

But, what I want to express is something more concrete than just like that, because some people want to know God, not only to serve God in human frame, but also want to know the God, the transcendental God, the transcendental Buddha nature. We see that Buddha became Buddha by what way. We see Christ how he had become so great. There is a reason, there is a way to achieve this greatness. Just like any science. Just like you want to study in university, you have to have such and such condition; you must have some money, some qualifications from high school; you have to pass some exams. Now if we want to become a Buddha or Christ, apart from this great love that we show to other human beings, like in human work, in amnesty work, in social service, we have to know our real nature; we have to know where we come from; we have to know how great we are.

    Journeying Back To Our Source

Now, we have been great in the past. We have come from the kingdom of God. If we haven't come from God, then where have we come from? God created all things. If we haven't come from this Buddha nature or the Tao, then where have we come from? We must start from there, from that greatest source in the universe. So, therefore we have been great always. It's just that we forgot, that is the Truth that we forgot. Now, there is a way to remember these things again by walking backward to the higher source, where we have come from. Just like you follow the river down to the sea. Now if you want to go back to the source of the river, walk backward. So, the kingdom of God is within us, so walk inward. There is a way to see the kingdom of God within, to see the Buddha within. That is what we call the enlightenment method. Go back to the original. The Buddha had followed this method to become Buddha. Jesus Christ had followed this method to become the son of God.

Now if we say we are all sons of God, we are already Buddha, so why we need to practice? Yes, we are. But we forgot. That is no use for us now. We have to remember again through diligent effort to go back into the past, to our own deep memory. That is what the scientists call 95 percent dormant intelligence. In that 95 percent lays many things. Now, with only 5 percent, we can already go to Mars; we can already go to the moon. We can already make airplanes and rockets and all kinds of comfort to life. What much more if we could use the 95 percent? The kingdom of God is ours, if we know how to use it.

We know we are Buddha. Everybody tells us we are Buddhas, or we are the sons of God, but we don't know where that greatness is. We only know that we are miserable everyday, or not everyday but I mean most of many days. I'm sorry if you are happy, but I see the majority of people. Though they have money, have good family, status, everything is ephemeral. Look at our country, the Au Lac country, it had been glorious, peaceful. We had many things; we were very rich in minerals, in agriculture, in culture. But then suddenly, we have nothing. Suddenly, all is turned upside down, everything destroyed. People had to leave the country, so dangerous on the sea, and they had to fight for survival. Many people who came to your country have been heroes in our country, have been generals, top leaders, millionaires, billionaires in our country. They are not just all poor. They are not just all illiterate. They are not just all useless, helpless people. They have been in the glorious past, they've been the men of wisdom, of social standing, of rich, of culture. It is just the ephemeral life turns sometimes and makes people become nothing that humiliate our people.

Maybe it is good for them, I do not know, that we have to learn sometimes to come down, to be humble, and to know there is a greater force than our own hand and human brain can control. Then we have to turn back to God, to turn back to practice to become Buddha, to rely on this great force of the Buddha nature or Kingdom of God. That is maybe the reason why we have to learn sometimes through disasters to know God. Otherwise we keep having success in our life and being so successful, we are carried away with it, and we forgot where we come from. We forgot that we are greater than just a lawyer. We are greater than just a president, we are greater than just a millionaire. We are God's children; we are Buddhas. So this birthright we have to claim. It doesn't matter through what. Through happiness, through longing, or through disaster.

Life Is Ephemeral, So Practice Before It's Too Late

We have to be awakened through many means. Therefore, I said earlier, there are many ways to find the wisdom within. If we don't long to find it ourselves, sometimes the Creator will send disasters to wake us. So we see that many times, in time of stress and disaster, we pray more honestly, more sincerely to God than when we are well-off, than when we are in happiness, or in stable condition. Is it not so? So, when we have pain, or our family have people died, or some disasters, then we pray. At that time we remember God very clearly. "Please, please, please ...." So many prayers.

Now, we do not need to wait until a disaster befalls us in order to remember to practice to become Buddha again or to be like Christ. We should do it when we have time, at leisure, and good conditions. So that we do not have to have experience disaster. What we call in Au Lac: To prevent is better than to cure. We all know this. Every nation will say the same thing. But we just don't do it. We just don't prevent things. We just do things, and then reap the result and then we cry. Now we have been through life, 30, 40, 50 years now. We should have known a little bit more about this ephemeral nature of life. We should turn back to God now, so that the day we leave this world, God open the kingdom for us, Buddha welcome us. Not the darkness, not the evil plane of existence what we call Satan power, or the Negative power, or the power of Maya.

So I'm here like everywhere else, just to offer you a way to find your own Greatness. With God, well and good. With Buddha, it's also well and good. Without God, without Buddha you still can find your Greatness. Because you are that, you are born from God. You are bound to go back to God, whether you believe or not believe. You are that, you cannot escape anyhow. So I just want to offer you what I have found as a treasure, hidden treasure within myself. And I know that the hidden treasure is within you as well. I would like only to help you to know your greatness, your self-worth. And then you live in the world as king, as saint, as Christ did, as Buddha did. And not having inferiority complex, and not doing your work well, and not sleeping well, having guilty conscience, having sickness, disease body and mind. That is my purpose. Now I will end my lecture. Thank you! (Applause)

    Drought And Floods Inflict Cambodia:
The Country Desperately Needs 300,000 Tons Of Food

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association Raised A Contribution Of 6,000 Tons Of Rice, Followed By Another 1,000 Tons

[Reporter Chen Jin-Long reporting from Taichung]

Another one thousand tons of rice contributed by Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, situated at Hsihu of Miaoli Hsien, have been delivered to the No. 25 Warehouse at the Taichung Port. The shipment is scheduled to be conveyed by the Panama vessel S.S. Bright Star on the 8th, so that the contributed rice can reach the disaster victims in Cambodia promptly.

On December 1 last year, Supreme Master Ching Hai arrived at Thailand to give lectures, and then treated the assistant team consisting of fellow practitioners from various countries, with a feast. A Cambodian envoy team visited Supreme Master Ching Hai at that time. Mr. Ni Wen-De, Vice Director of the Emergency Relief Committee described the severe flood disaster that devastated several hundred thousand acres of farmland, which was caused by the heavy torrent of rainfall in Cambodia last July, and led to the flood in the Mekong River last August. On the other hand, other regions in the country were hit by grave drought. Ravaged by two opposite disasters, Cambodia was alarmingly lacking about 300,000 tons of food, and millions of victims were on the brink of starvation. Knowing the news, Supreme Master Ching Hai was extremely sympathetic to the victims, and promised immediately to help the country. In one month, a contribution of 6,000 tons of rice had been raised, and delivered by two shipments to Cambodia in late December last year, and late February this year. That was a full demonstration of the compassionate spirit of "Other's hunger is our hunger!".

At that time, King Sihanouk of Cambodia also joined the relief work personally. Rejoicing the visit of the King, the victims had temporarily forgotten their suffering. They were also consoled by the warmth from a foreign countryman when they saw on the rice sacks the words: "Rice contributed by Supreme Master Ching Hai."

As Cambodia is still desperate for food, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association has decided to donate another 1,000 tons of rice, packed in 20,000 packets, and are being delivered to the No.25 Warehouse in Taichung Port. The shipment will be conveyed by S.S. Bright Star, which will arrive at Taichung to start the loading work.

However, the International Association mentioned that over four hundred sacks containing the rice were damaged in the last two shipments. Therefore, they asked for help from the Port Service Bureau, wishing they will advise the wharf workers not to use hooks when loading the rice, so as to minimize the damage. The Association stressed that each grain of rice is full of love and blessing from the Buddha. Any loss incurred will affect the victims desperately in need. It is our blessing that we have enough food here, therefore, we should share our blessing and love with more people.

The one thousand tons of rice safely arrived in Cambodia on Sept. 17. Minister Nhim Vanda, First Envoy and Representative of the First and Second Prime Ministers of Cambodia, held a special ceremony to mark the occasion, and to thank Master for Her help rendered to the Cambodian people.
