Elevation Of The Soul
Spiritual Interlude
By Sister Initiate Lin Meizheng, Taoyuan, Formosa
Before leaving for the 1996 retreat in the USA, I was worried about how
to tactfully explain to my eleven year old, half initiated, daughter that
I was going without taking her with me. Surprisingly, when I told her she
did not protest but reminded me with a smile that I should not forget to
bring back candies and gifts for her. My flight was to leave at one o'clock
in the afternoon, so I got up early in the morning to pack my luggage.
While packing I just said casually: "Oh, the temperature in the US
will only be 5 degrees celsius and I forgot to buy heat packs." Then
I glanced at the clock on the wall, and said to my daughter who was having
her breakfast: "Oh please hurry so you won't be late for school." Having seen her off to school, I went back to the packing. After a short
while my daughter suddenly came back home again! I asked her why, and she
smiled and turned to head off to school again without saying anything.
Only after I had sorted out my things did I realize that she was worried
about me suffering from the cold so she bought the heat packs for me with
her own money and risked being late for school. I was very touched and
didn't know what to say. I did not notice when it was that Master had taught
this naughty and fun-seeking little girl to be so loving, caring and sensitive.
Master, my loving Mother, thank You for taking care of me so attentively
and making me worry-free. I hope I can repay Your loving care by practicing
harder, more vigorously and more diligently.¡¹

Selected Questions & Answers
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai Group Meditation, LA, U.S.A.

Q: I see in the recent periodical that Master stresses the importance of
positive thinking. I see that addressed more and more in the articles.
I know that positive thinking will drive positive energy around you and
avoid the negative energy around you. How about its relationship with karma?
I mean does that positive thinking change karma, or not?
M: Sometimes can, sometimes can not. Depends on how deep the karma is and
depends on how truly positive your thinking is -- the power of your thinking
not just because you want to think positive, it will be positive. Depends
on how much money you spend behind your desire. You can't just desire something
and have it. You must have the money for it too. Similarly, you think positively,
but your mind is not strong enough to invest the power of mental control
over this thinking. Then, even if you think, it's just a thought for a
fleeting moment. It doesn't have any effect.
So, we must meditate. We must harness the power of our will again in order
to focus it together. And once we are focused and we concentrate the power
in whichever direction we want to use it, or for whatever purpose, it would
be powerful. But before that whatever you want, whatever you think, it's
just very flat. No power. So, people just go with positive thinking. But,
nothing is done. Nothing happens. Then they will doubt the people who say
what positive thinking will do. But, it is not the people who say, who
are wrong. It's not the author who says, who is wrong. It's the person
who practices, who is wrong. He didn't have enough power to even think,
never mind negative or positive.

Aphorisms
By Supreme Master Ching Hai (Originally In English)
Try to concentrate on the state of balance between pain and pleasure, therefore
get back the mastership for yourself.
When you meditate, you try to forget your knowing, your mind, your knowledge,
your breath, your physical sensation and just be. Remember what's most
important.
With the goodness and the powerful energy from God, through meditation
each day, we will be able to dilute or maybe digest completely any information
that is harmful to our minds and our souls.
By Supreme Master Ching Hai (Originally In English)
Everything we do is practicing. Every work we do well that is practicing,
that is meditation, and that is contributing to God and to the universe.
That is also a learning experience, not just meditation.
By Supreme Master Ching Hai (Originally In English)
We must always do the right thing, then God will see what we do. But we
must do it in a selfless manner and naturally, not just with motive, then
it's perfect.
The Truth is not a fixed nirvana or Kingdom of God, it is a forever growing
process.

Master's Wonders
Master's Heavenly Peaches The Story Of A Puppy
Narrated By Brother Initiate Lee Sheng-Shiong, Taipei, Formosa
Recorded By Brother Initiate Chen Wen-Shen, Taipei, Formosa
One day, brother Lee accompanied his wife, who was not yet an initiate,
back to her family home for a visit. The sister's family had a peach tree
that was a couple of decades old. The trunk of the tree was as thick as
two arm lengths.
On this day, when his friends and relatives were chatting under the tree,
brother Lee looked up and saw that there was an abundant of big, ripe,
juicy peaches. In his excitement, he exclaimed: "I'm going to climb
up the tree and pick the wonderful peaches for everyone to eat."
When they heard that, they laughed and said: "Don't waste your time.
Those peaches are inedible. They're full of worms. We are even thinking
about cutting the tree down!"
When brother Lee heard that he said: "How is that possible? These
peaches are so big and beautiful. How could they have worms?" He was
thinking if the old tree were to be cut down, we would be disregarding
the good-will of the heavens. So despite the teasing and taunting of his
friends and relatives, he climbed up and picked the peaches.
He depended solely on his faith in Master's Power. Every time he picked
a peach, he sincerely asked for Master's blessing. After a short while,
there was a whole basket full of peaches. Having washed them, he bit into
one with a swooshing sound. All his friends couldn't wait to see what the
peach was like. How surprised they were: "How is that possible? No
worms!"
"I don't believe it!" So several of them took some peaches from
the basket and tasted them too. The swooshing sound of biting into peaches
abounded, but every one of them said with emotion: "There are worms
in this peach."
When brother Lee saw that, he said: "I don't believe it. The one I
had had no worms." So he recited the Holy Names and took some peaches
for them to try again. The incredible thing was, this time all the peaches
that they ate had no worms.
All his friends and relatives felt suspicious and asked: "Did you
arrange the peaches beforehand?" Brother Lee felt puzzled and said:
"How is that possible! All the peaches in the basket look alike. And
didn't you say that the peaches had worms inside?" When they thought
about it, it was indeed true! So they asked brother Lee to hand them the
rest of the peaches to eat. After they were all finished, they even asked
him to pick another basket. They all enjoyed the fresh and wonderful taste
of the peaches.
Using this opportunity, brother Lee described to everyone there all the
benefits he has physically and mentally gained after being initiated by
Master. After this incident, everyone gradually came to accept Master and
ate less meat. Even after a year had passed, brother Lee's relatives excitedly
told him that the peaches from the tree were still sweet, juicy and delicious.
Master has told us that "Everything is created by our minds."
We can control our negative perceptions and change our immediate atmosphere
by always thinking about positive things, looking at good things, and doing
good things. Brother Lee said sincerely: "Our Master is truly a great
enlightened Master. Everything She says is based in the universal Truth."
If we keep our faith, continue steadily on the path, one day, our own "tree"
will bear fruit. Just like the peach tree, after being blessed by an enlightened
Master, it produces wonderful fruit, beautiful inside and out.¡¹

Recorded By Brother Initiate Fang Wen Zhi, Jiayi, Formosa
One evening, while coming home from shopping, I noticed a little animal
moving in a dark street corner near my home. Out of curiosity, I went over
to investigate and found that it was an injured puppy. The little thing
was very dirty, and it couldn't stand because its rear legs had most probably
been run over by a car. Not knowing how to take care of it, I got a plastic
bag from a shop nearby, gently put the little dog inside, and placed it
in a safe corner out of the way of the traffic.
Next day when I passed by, the puppy was still there. It crawled with great
difficulty with its front limbs, dragging its rear legs behind it. Perhaps
it had not eaten for a long time, so it looked very weak and pitiful. I
quickly went home to prepare some food for it.
After feeding it for three days, I found that it was getting physically
stronger, except that it was still unable to walk properly. Therefore,
I took it home, bathed it, then took it to a well-known veterinary clinic
for medical treatment.
After examining the puppy, the vet told me that its rear legs were severely
broken beyond repair. He pointed at its rear legs and showed me that they
were indeed only broken bones wrapped in skin. He said that the puppy was
permanently crippled, and advised me to think carefully before keeping
it. Apart from feeding it, I would also have to be constantly vigilant
because of the animal's inability to control its bowels and bladder. The
vet said if I found it too troublesome he would give it an injection to
end its suffering. Having fed the puppy for several days, I couldn't let
it die, so I decided to take it home and keep it. Only when I reached home
did I remember that I had to go aboard for the retreat. I went into the
living-room and whispered to Master's photo: "What should I do? There
will be no one to take care of this puppy."
When my husband (a fellow initiate) came home that afternoon, he immediately
said to me, "Hey! The puppy seems to be able to stand up!"
I said, "How is it possible? This morning, the veterinarian stated
that its condition was hopeless, and was considering putting the puppy
to sleep. How could it possibly stand up?" Hearing my words, my husband
was convinced that he was mistaken about what he had seen. Early next morning,
I took some food to the back garden for the puppy, and I was stunned by
what I saw! With great emotion, my hands trembled so much that I almost
dropped the bowl. Unbelievably, the puppy was really standing up. It was
wagging its tail and greeted me with its twinkling eyes. With immense joy,
I hugged and caressed it. Tears rolled down my cheeks, and I knew it was
all due to Master's boundless blessing power.
When I took the puppy to the veterinary clinic for its immunization inoculation,
the vet was absolutely amazed to see the puppy able to stand on its feet.
He asked me which vet cured it. I said, "You are a veterinary with
a master degree, and you said that its condition was incurable. So, how
would I have the faith to go to another doctor. It was cured by my all-compassionate
Master." The bewildered vet could only cross his arms and think hard
over something that was too incredible for him to believe.
Of course, this is a fantastic incident for outsiders, but to us fellow
practitioners, it is not such an unusual thing. Most of us have more or
less experienced how Master's almighty loving power takes care of us and
the sentient beings that we care for, relieving us from endless unfortunate
circumstances.¡¹

Movie Commentary By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Group Meditation, Hawaii,
U.S.A.
September 6, 1994 (Originally In English)
What we earn we will feel proud of. Most of the money you earn yourself,
you will know how to spend and you'll cherish it. But most of the spoiled
princesses like the people who were born with a silver or golden spoon,
they don't know how to deal with true life. Really! They sometimes are
so spoiled that they even damage the property of their ancestors -- burn
it, waste it.
There are some heavenly beings who never come to this world. They don't
need to perhaps. Actually because the Father also needs someone there.
Cannot send all down here. Perhaps that's why. Even when God gives us the
opportunity to be in this world, we actually want to be tested. The harder
the situation, the more challenging. It's only test and trials. So that
the individual soul will progress. The harder the test, the better. You
graduate in more glory.
Those Olympians, they try very hard. They go through a lot of training
which we ordinary people would just give up in two days. It's not that
they become stars over night. You know how they're trained, don't you?.
Sometimes they have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning, go through
ice and all this while we are sleeping and having a lazy life. But then
we don't become a star. Even movie stars, they train very hard -- those
who are really exceptional. For example, there is a movie in Hong Kong
about Jacky Chen -- the boxing director and also star of Hong Kong -- a
movie about his life.
When he was young, he was given away by his parents. His mother perhaps
could not take care of so many children, because of a poor family or something.
So he was given away to the teacher. When you are given away in that situation,
your mother doesn't complain. You die or you live with the teacher. The
teacher can do anything to you. Legally
he is not responsible for anything, that happens with students. They're
trained very hard, oh my God. He even bent their bodies into V or T-shape.
At a young age it's easier to train children. They had to bend, and jump.
They had to go through a lot of hard training. That's why when you see
his movie now, it's real. He really jumps, he really bends, he really kicks
around. He really practiced, so he really is worth his art. He never uses
a stunt man. He always does all the dangerous scenes himself. That's why
people like him so much, because he is very genuine.
He was born poor, not very poor. But then he stayed together with those
poor children under his teacher's protection and teaching. They grew up
together. All of them became accomplished movie star themselves. But they
went through, wow, training. I saw the children. You'd shed tear to see
how they were treated. It's not that the teacher did not love them. But
it's just the way it had to be. They grew up to become accomplished stars
of Hong Kong and even internationally. That was because of the teacher
had treated them so hard and trained them so rigorously, even adults could
not bear it. Sometimes they had to go through being hungry and thirsty
because the teacher punished them. Children sometimes they're mischievous,
they go out and forget to come home, or something like that. The teacher
punished them, let them go hungry for one day. And they would go and steal
some food from next door. Then get bitten, bleeding.
This movie is very touching. Not because of the life of the children only
but the relationship between the teacher and the student. It is very very
nice. Some movies are not only movies, they are really educational in nature.¡¹

Drinking Water And Thinking Of The Source - A Spiritual Tour Of The Pyramids
Of The Sun And Moon
March 21st is spring time in Mexico, also the day that various spiritual
groups and people gathered at the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon -- Teotihuacan,
for a festival that hosts more than a million visitors each year. In addition
to its grandeur, myths and legends this intriguing event includes fly-overs
by UFOs and the descent of angels!
Initiates in Mexico recalled that Master visited Mexico for the first time
on a lecture tour in April, 1993. Earlier, on March 21, 1993, fellow initiates
from all over the world helped to distribute fliers and sample booklets
at the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, conveying Master's message to a great
number of Mexican visitors, many of whom later decided to receive initiation.
Three years later, these Mexican initiates have derived infinite benefit
from the Quan Yin Method. In appreciation of Master's love and the joint
efforts of initiates from around the globe, they returned to this memorable
spot to hand out fliers and sample booklets to would-be brothers and sisters.
A Historic Spiritual Venue
To make the most of this opportunity, fellow initiates printed 10,000 copies
of fliers on a rented printing press and folded them overnight for distribution
on this special occasion. Over a dozen Mexican initiates along with a Quan
Yin messenger set off on the morning of the festival. The fliers, which,
it was thought, would take a whole day to distribute, were all handed out
within hours to a throng of over a million people.
After reading the fliers, a considerable number of the people showed interest
in Master's teachings and inquired in detail about the Convenient Method
and the Quan Yin Method of meditation. Many others even remembered that
first Mexican lecture given by Master in 1993.
Mysterious UFOs Appear Above The Pyramids Of The Sun And Moon
After distributing the sample booklets, fellow initiates meditated at another
pyramid for over an hour and then took some photos in a parking lot, unaware
that UFOs were watching them, right above their heads. After developing
the photos, they found that the UFOs had been accompanying them for some
time, witnessing the sensation aroused by the sample booklets. On their
way back to the capital, they watched closely as the UFOs dashed toward
them at lightning speed instead of just remaining stationary. This was
the first time that they had personally witnessed UFOs, which were like
white blazing light bulbs that moved to and fro at ultrasonic speeds, making
quite a display for the initiates.
It was a most pleasant trip to the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, where
initiates received Master's blessings and felt very grateful to Her.¡¹

The Change Of A Livestock Farmer Developing A New Kind Of Energy--The Story Of Nikola Tesla
Interview with Howard F. Lyman, director of the "Eating With Conscience
Campaign" of the Humane Society of the United States
Mr. Lyman is a fourth-generation family farmer with over 35 years of personal
experience. His farming experience includes: working in a large organic
dairy farm, owning a large factory feedlot, raising chickens, pigs and
turkeys, farming thousands of acres of grain; and raising a herd of over
one thousand commercial beef cows.
His story begins in 1979 when he became paralyzed from the waist down due
to a tumor on his spinal cord. The doctors predicted, that since the tumor
was located inside his spinal cord, an operation would give him one chance
in a million of ever walking again. He made a promise to himself the night
before the operation that no matter what the outcome of the surgery, he
would dedicate the remainder of his life to doing what he believed was
right.
After a 12 hour operation, the doctors removed the tumor. He made a successful
recovery and a few days later, walked out of the hospital. It was this
experience which changed his life. He believes that the reason he is able
to walk today is that God has a mission for him to accomplish.
After this experience, Mr. Lyman reflected on how, following all the modern
advice, he had converted his small organic family farm into a large corporate
chemical farm. He had witnessed his organic soil change from a living productive
base to a sterile, chemically saturated plot as a result of the so-called
modern methods of farming. He also began to perceive the inhumane way animals
are raised in factory feedlots.
So he decided to re-educate himself on the effects of chemical farming.
After much reading and studying, in 1983 he sold his farm and began working
with other farmers who were in financial trouble; this lead to a position
with the Montana Farmers Union. In 1987, Mr. Lyman moved to Washington,
DC, to serve as a lobbyist for the National Farmers Union. He spent five
years in politics on Capital Hill and had some small successes such as
the enacting of the National Organic Standards Act, but realized that much
more was required. He became convinced that the needed changes had to come
from the producers and consumers at the grassroots level.
Commenting on the root cause of our health and environmental problems,
Mr. Lyman said, "Whether it's the loss of the rain forests, world
hunger, loss of top soil or our own health, they are all part of a wheel
and the fork with which we eat is the axle. Our fork is the most dangerous
weapon in the arsenal of Homo sapiens. We're digging more graves more with
our forks than with any other tool." In 1992, Mr. Lyman, as the Executive
Director of the "International Beyond Beef Campaign" organized
a massive public education campaign. More than 10,000 people distributed
over 1,000,000 pieces of information in one day at over 3,000 separate
locations around the world. The objective was to educate consumers about
their food choices and the benefits of a vegetarian diet. He went on to
become the Director of the "Eating With Conscience Campaign"
for the Humane Society of the United States and the President of the International
Vegetarian Union.
In these roles, during the past five years, he traveled more than 200,000
miles annually and in 1996 alone, spoke on over 4,000 radio stations and
300 television stations, and gave over 1000 interviews. He has spoken to
thousands of groups ranging in size from small audiences to an assembly
exceeding 25,000 people at the Earth Day Celebration in Oakland, California.
He talks to people about changing their diet from an animal base to a vegetable
one, emphasizing that they can live longer and healthier by eating with
conscience. He encourages everyone to ask: Who produced my food? What did
they use on it? What is it doing to me, the environment and the animals?
He commented, "My life is dedicated to sharing the belief that each
one of us can make the world a better place and if there is to be a bright
future for our children and grandchildren, it will come from consumer support
of producers who work in concert with nature -- organically, sustainably
and humanely."
When asked about Mad Cow disease, Mr. Lyman said that it is believed to
be caused by an abnormal protein called a prion that was first recognized
in Britain in 1986. He reported that this protein can survive 340 degrees
centigrade; has no DNA or RNA; can be buried in the soil and still be infectious.
Furthermore, if it is placed in the strongest disinfectant, it will survive
for five years and emerge more vigorous than when it went in. Prions are
thought to multiply by setting off chain reactions in the brain that damage
healthy cellular proteins, thereby converting normal proteins into abnormal
ones. The disease is believed to be transmitted by the cost-saving practice
of recycling the remains of slaughtered animals into a protein residue
and feeding it to cows. Because some of the slaughtered animals are diseased,
the agent that causes the disease, which is not easily detected or destroyed,
can end up in animal feed. Mr. Lyman said that the estimated number of
human cases of the equivalent form of the disease in England is about 100
and that in a few years that number could increase from 5000 to over 1
million. He went on to say that even though the US government claims that
there are no confirmed cases in the US, he believes there are indicators
to question the veracity of this statement.
Mr. Lyman noted that half of all Americans are dying today from heart disease
and the main contributing factor is saturated fat, obtained mostly from
animal products; and cholesterol, which only comes from animal products.
One of every three Americans today will acquire cancer and one of four
will die from it. Of all the carcinogens and toxins that go into the human
body, 75% are from animal products while only 16% are from vegetable products.
He explained that 91% of all carcinogens and toxins that cause cancer can
be removed by doing two things: removing animal products from the diet
and eating organic vegetables. He went on to say, "The thing that
I am most proud of today is that no animal has to die for me to live a
long, healthy and productive life. If I have the ability to live without
the need for any animal to die, then why put my hands in the blood of another
living being who has feelings just like humans and enjoys life probably
as much as I do. This is a win-win situation. I live longer by not eating
them, they live longer by me not eating them, and everyone who picks up
their fork should be concerned with this situation."¡¹

By Brother Initiate Rongfu Chen,
Ph.D. Candidate, Physics Research Institute, National Taiwan University,
Formosa
Through years of practice, I have gradually come to realize that Master
is not only a great spiritual leader, but also a great teacher of science.
Since Master mentioned the scientist Nikola Tesla (1856-1943)1 several
times, I started to collect material about him. I have found that he made
many discoveries and invented such things as the alternating current (AC)
generator, the polyphase system, the alternating current motor, radio communications,
a remote controlled submarine, a wireless light bulb, wireless power transmission,
the terrestrial resonance at 8HZ, an engine without pistons or leaf-shaped
blades, alternative energy sources, et cetera. It surprised me that many
physics and engineering professors either do not know of him or do not
recognize those ideas of his that are worth further research. Master, however,
knows.
Tesla, like his elder brother, who died at an early age, experienced Light
ever since he was a child. He could see strong flashes of Light and images
in front of his eyes. Certainly, this was not his imagination. If someone
said a word to him, the object that the word represented would appear vividly
in front of him. Sometimes he couldn't tell if there was an actual object
there. The image would still be there even if he stretched out his arms.2
Tesla started his spiritual journey when he was young. He experienced worlds
beyond the comprehension of people in this world. He saw new places, cities
and countries. These images were very vivid in his mind. He imagined himself
living in a country that he had never seen and made good friends with the
local people, who were very friendly to him and looked very real.3 Occurrences
like this happened until he was seventeen. After that, he concentrated
all his thoughts on inventing.
He was delighted to find that he had an amazing ability to imagine things.
He needed no models or experiments, yet he could imagine them vividly in
his mind. For example, before he invented the alternating current motor,
he felt the existence of such a thing, although he could not yet comprehend
it. While he was reciting poems with his friends in a park one day, he
suddenly felt the image of the entire construction of the motor. He then
drew a blueprint of the structure of the motor on the ground with a stick.
This supports what Master has said: "There are many things we have
learned before." Maybe Tesla had seen such things when he was in a
higher world. Subsequently, when he came to this world and could not find
them, he used his knowledge and the scientific knowledge obtained from
his research to create them.
When Tesla faced dangerous or unfavorable situations, or when he was jubilant,
he often saw unexplainable flashes of Light. Sometimes he saw flames burst
out in the air around him. The lights became stronger and stronger every
year and peaked when he was twenty-five years old. He described the following
when he was sixty: "These luminous phenomena still manifest themselves
from time to time, as when a new idea opening up possibilities strikes
me. But they are no longer exciting, being of relatively low intensity.
When I close my eyes, I invariably observe first, a background of very
dark and uniform blue, not unlike the sky on a clear but starless night.
In a few seconds this field becomes animated with innumerable scintillating
flakes of green, arranged in several layers and advancing towards me. Then
there appears, to the right, a beautiful pattern of two systems of parallel
and closely spaced lines, at right angles to one another, in all sorts
of colors with yellow-green and gold predominating. Immediately thereafter
the lines grow brighter and the whole is thickly sprinkled with dots of
twinkling light. This picture moves slowly across the field of vision and
in about ten seconds vanishes to the left, leaving behind a ground of rather
unpleasant and inert grey which quickly gives way to a billowy sea of clouds,
seemingly trying to mould themselves in living shapes. It is curious that
I cannot project a form into this grey until the second phase is reached.
Every-time, before falling asleep, images of persons or objects flit before
my view. When I see them I know that I am about to lose consciousness.
If they are absent and refuse to come, it means a sleepless night."
Tesla was eager to search for more convenient, more attractive science
and technologies without concern for whether the new discoveries would
impact upon the profits resulting from previous discoveries. For example
the alternating current used now was hindered by adherents of the direct-current
system. At the time when the obstacles were cleared, the alternating current
equipment and power lines were all set up and investors started to make
profits from them, Tesla began publishing his views on how to transmit
power without wires to every corner of the world in order to benefit more
people. Regardless of the feasibility of such theories, his spirit was
rare and valuable. When he designed a light bulb, he would not accept a
small defect, which was intended to let the bulb burn out after a certain
amount of usage so that the manufacturer could continue to sell bulbs to
make more profits. Similarly, the engine he designed was also environmentally
friendly and durable.
Tesla also believed deeply in the existence of extraterrestrial (especially
Martian) life forms. He hoped that he could communicate with them, and
even transmit power between planets. In 1889, aiming to realize his goal
of a worldwide communication network and power transmission, Tesla set
up a laboratory at Colorado Springs, Colorado to research and develop a
magnifying transmitter, the machine needed for his plan. His intention
was to use the machine to power the Earth and create an extra-low frequency
(ELF) electromagnetic stationary wave between the Earth and the ionosphere,
in order to transmit power. The machine could also be used to create and
guide high frequency current to the atmosphere to artificially create auroras
to light up whole city without street lights, et cetera.
After spending eight months studying and some time on preparation, Tesla
and others built an experimental tower at Long Island, New York and installed
the magnifying transmitter on the tower. Unfortunately, because his radio
patent was stolen and investors lost confidence, et cetera, they could
not get enough capital to finish their plan.
Finally they had to dismantle the tower and sell it in order to pay off
their debts. Tesla announced many of his creative scientific ideas. However,
unless the research was finished, he wouldn't announce the details.
In addition, he had his unique way of thinking imaginatively. Consequently,
the new energy sources and other creative ideas he discovered in his later
years could not be understood easily by just studying the relevant documents
or his 1889 experimental diary, which is still in existence.
There are two kinds of researchers nowadays who study Tesla's findings.
The first concept, released by Corum Associate in 1984, uses electromagnetic
transmission line theory to explain the operational principles of the magnifying
transmitter. In 1994, Richard Hull and his partner published a book4 according
to their experience of re-creating and operating the magnifying transmitter
to explain Tesla's experimental diary and to verify Corum's theory. From
their study, we know that if the machine were big enough, it could create
an effect similar to lightning, and it also could be used to transmit high
voltage power efficiently. But regarding powering the Earth electromagnetically
without affecting its environment, there is still no satisfactory conclusion.
The second kind of researcher thinks that modern scientific theories have
shortcomings, and consequently, we ignore and cannot explain the cosmic
energy distributed around us. Actually such energy is inexhaustible. If
only we could get the right combination of necessary components, closely
related to cosmic power, and make their electrical or mechanical frequency
the same as, or in proportion to that of cosmic energy, we could induce
a resonance to obtain cosmic energy. But because of the hindrance of the
so-called "underground government" relevant equipment cannot
be distributed and quantitative theoretical studies cannot be conducted
widely.5 In any event, in the future, the use of new energy will support
Master's foresight in 1992: "...... In the higher worlds they don't
need oil like we do. ..... They use different kinds of energy, not necessarily
the sun's energy. We have other kinds of energy which are in the atmosphere.
I think some scientists have begun to find out, but have not put it to
use. ....."6¡¹

Poem
What I like most,
Is to wake up in the morning light,
From a dream with You.
Looking in the mirror,
I see myself alive with a smile.
What I like most,
Is to sit in the twilight,
Combing and grooming
In the blessings of the Sound and Light.
What I like most,
Is to be with You in a merry rendezvous,
Listening to Your humorous jokes,
One after another,
Followed by bursts of hearty laughter.
Oh, there are favorites upon favorites
Ever since You entered my life.

While On The Path
By Brother Initiate Dong Shutang, California, U.S.A.
Only if one sincerely believes in Master can one feel Her loving concern
and blessings.
It all goes back to Master's grace in transmitting to me the Quan Yin Method
in San Jose last October. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have
my dream realized. After initiation, I have had some inner experiences,
and though they were hardly out of the ordinary, I have enjoyed many outer
experiences. Firstly, my faith in and devotion to Master have grown each
day; my love, which I concede, was once so small is also growing silently;
and I have fewer and fewer unhappy incidents in my daily life. In particular,
those people, events or things that do not meet with my approval are also
becoming fewer and fewer. These abrupt changes are vastly different from
the habits of my former self. I am absolutely certain that this has some
awesome connection to the Quan Yin Method that Master has blessed me with.
Actually, perceptible changes in my concepts and ideas occurred soon after
I decided to pursue spiritual practice as a result of having read Master's
sample booklet, watching some of Her videotapes, accepting Her doctrines,
and becoming a vegetarian. Countless obstacles arose from everywhere, but
they only strengthened my determination to follow the spiritual path. I
believe that it is Her compassion and grace that have enabled me to come
through so easily and find myself filled with the bliss derived from spiritual
practice all the time.
Master's teachings are simple and easy to understand; and I have gained
much from them. I, who once loved to sleep, can now get up in the wee hours
of the morning to meditate, all because of my belief in what Master has
said, that it is the best time for meditation. Once, after a long exhausting
day and evening, I went to bed late without worrying that I might miss
my early morning meditation session. I fell sound asleep without the slightest
fear that I might not be able to get up in time. I was very deep in sleep
when I was rudely awakened by a sudden harsh clanging. It didn't seem like
a dream, yet I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. When I could
stand it no longer and decided to get out of bed, the sound suddenly ceased.
I looked at the clock on the wall. It was almost four in the morning. I
know it must have been Master who did not want me to miss the best hours
for meditation by ingeniously demonstrating Her concern for me at the right
time. Thank You, Master!
Master takes meticulous care of us while we are on the path of spiritual
practice. She is with us at all times, no matter what we are doing. She
is always able to use the innocuous everyday episodes in our lives at just
the right time to remind us that we shouldn't forget this important thing
- spiritual practice.
Master teaches a simple but realistic Truth. However, we are often so busy
or insensitive that we forget Her existence and the help She renders us.
She once said that the help we get is in proportion to our faith. If we
don't believe in Master and Her teachings, then we shouldn't complain when
we run into trouble, or are at a loss or helpless. This is just like if
we do not turn on the fax machine, how can we receive a message from Master?"¡¹

A Golden 3-Day Retreat -- A Happy Meeting Between Master And Disciples
[Tokyo] Early this year, the Tokyo Center moved from the Ohmori in the
Shinagawa-Ku district to Ohtsufa in the Toshimr-Ku district. However, this
Center was not big enough for the steadily increasing number of fellow
initiates and would-be initiates. Furthermore, in order to make it more
convenient for fellow initiates from the neighboring province, Kanagawa,
to attend group meditations, they found a new location in Kanagawa Province.
Aside from regular group meditations, the new Center is also open during
holidays for fellow initiates from other areas such as Tokyo, Gunma and
Osaka to hold retreats in the serene outskirts of Kanagawa. The early days
of May were holidays in Japan, so fellow initiates who live near the new
Center, as well as those from Kumamoto, Gunma and Osaka, joined new initiates
by seizing the opportunity to get far away from the hustle and bustle of
city life and held a three-day retreat at the new Center. Those who could
not attend the international retreat scheduled in Australia in May due
to work, family or financial reasons, especially treasured the three-day
retreat in Japan.
Having been charged spiritually, they organized a vegetarian dinner party
after the retreat at the Cultural Center nearby to promote vegetarianism
as a means to purify society. Guests from various fields, as well as friends,
relatives and would-be initiates were all entertained.
During the retreat, fellow initiates especially missed Master, the "Mother
of the land," reminding us of the saying, "the hearts of a mother
and her children are linked together". Thus in order to satisfy Her
children's longing, Master disregarded the long journey time and graced
the new Center with Her physical presence on the day the retreat ended
to officiate at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. As nothing was announced beforehand,
all the fellow initiates were greatly delighted when they suddenly saw
Her appear in front of their eyes.
At the vegetarian dinner party, Master mentioned that although the Center
in Japan was small, as spiritual practitioners, we should be broad-minded
and not be restricted by the size of the place. Master believes, due to
fellow initiates' diligent practice, Japan can look towards a better future.
Since Japan is a highly intellectual country, if Japanese fellow initiates
practice earnestly so that spiritual practice becomes a common practice,
then happiness will be brought to even more people.
After the vegetarian dinner, there were entertaining performances by Japanese,
Au Lacese, Chinese and Formosan fellow initiates, to express their joy
and to welcome Master. Despite their limited rehearsals, which meant the
quality of their performances was no comparison to those at the international
retreats, their one-mindedness and honor to perform for Master was no less
than that of the fellow initiates who perform at international retreats.
Mr. Akita, especially made time to attend the vegetarian dinner party.
Mr. Akita is a well-known specialist in China, and his wife is a fellow
initiate. Therefore, when he first saw the photograph of Master that his
wife brought home, he immediately treated it as a precious treasure. Mr.
Akita now practices the Convenient Method and has had some good spiritual
experiences. He especially went on stage at the party to express his reverence
for Master, and proclaimed that our group is truly "a group of light".
He also sang a Japanese song, "The Moon Over a Deserted City,"
which he sincerely dedicated to Master. It won loud applause from those
present.
Being Mother's Day eve, fellow initiates especially prepared a vegetarian
birthday cake, and wished our "Mother of the land" a happy birthday
and a happy Mother's Day. Even though fellow initiates knew that Master
was tired due to the trip, it was very hard for them to part with Her since
they love Her so much. Understanding Her children, Master gave a brief
talk at the end of the dinner party. She said that there was no time to
lose, and that everyone should pick up the pace of his/her practice so
that the world would be blessed by even more positive power. She also reminded
fellow initiates to show more love towards their families and friends.
One is only on the right path when one has more love for others as he or
she practices. Otherwise, one easily strays. Love should be practiced,
beginning with one's family. Only when one has a loving family relationship
can one have a peaceful mind to practice. The fellow initiates in Japan
are truly grateful to Master for making such a long journey just to be
with them. They were inspired to be even more diligent in their practice,
and to train themselves and work together, in the hope that their island
country, through their group efforts, will be blessed by Master's supreme
love.¡¹

1997 International Book Fair Received A Wonderful Response
[Seoul] Seoul Center recently attended the International Book Fair held
in mid May at the Korean Exhibition Center (KOEX) in Seoul. From the first
book fair until now, fellow initiates always set-up a booth to spread Master's
teachings in every book fair.
After the opening ceremony on the first day, KBS TV included a brief on
the fair in their evening news. Our Supreme Master Ching Hai book display
booth was shown, including a close-up of Master's picture. The next day
Ms. Park, Keun-Hea, the eldest daughter of former President Park, Jung-Hee,
received a free sample booklet when she visited the fair. She has been
practicing breathing meditation, as well as other forms of meditation,
so she expressed much pleasure when she received the free sample booklet.
The lotus-shaped decorations that were displayed in front of our booth
near Master's picture were made with a luminescent and translucent material
and the colors kept changing like a chameleon. A visitor commented to us
that the decoration was very pleasing to the eyes. Upon hearing that, we
learnt how to utilize the lighting artistically so as to add a spiritual
dimension to it. Also, another two volumes of the Supreme Master Ching
Hai News magazines and the fifth book in "The Key of Immediate Enlightenment"
series, all in Korean, were published at the same time and displayed during
the book fair, so all visitors to our booth were satisfied.
On the weekend even more visitors frequented our booth. With the active
spreading of Master's teachings by fellow initiates, most visitors to the
fair received a sample booklet. Thanks to Master's blessing the atmosphere
of the event was like that of a grand festival.
After the fair, many people visited the Seoul Center and the S.M Vegetarian
House for more information. Some registered to receive initiation immediately.
Some began to come to the Center every day to watch Master's videotapes.
This international book fair enabled many people to know about Master,
and we had a very good response.¡¹

Celebrating Mother's Day with Guests
[Jiayi] Mother's Day in May is also the birthday of our great Mother -
Master. Those initiates in Jiayi, who could not go to the Australian retreat
for various reasons, arranged a special party to wish Master a happy birthday
and to express their longing for Her on this day. They also invited friends
and relatives, who are non-initiates, to enjoy the holiday together. Initiates
prepared a European style buffet luncheon for everyone. After enjoying
the food, every guest put on a carnation to celebrate this heartwarming
holiday. Then they sat in a hall to watch the celebration performances.
The first program consisted of a chorus singing "Mother, You are Great".
Then fellow initiates performed with their best efforts to entertain all
the guests. The performances were new and eye-opening and the atmosphere
was happy and cheerful. Many performers were not used to expressing themselves
in front of the public before, but after practicing the Quan Yin Method,
they became enlightened and were able to develop and express their hidden
talents. After the performance, there were also many interesting interactive group
games, all participants received a gift. People on and off the stage were
all involved and cheerful. The MC also told jokes concerning spiritual
practice, as well as introduced Master's brief biography to the guests,
so they could have a deeper understanding of Master. The party concluded
with all singing a revised song called, "Best Wishes to Our Great
Mother Ching Hai."¡¹

"To Deliver Others Is To Liberate Ourselves"
[Auckland] Since the beginning of this year, initiates at the Auckland
Center have done a series of activities to promote Master's teachings.
They hoped that they could disseminate Master's teachings to every level
of society, allowing more people to know about the Quan Yin Method.
Initiates participated in "The First New Zealand Spiritual Expo"
at which many spiritual groups set up booths. The Expo was held at Auckland
City's Lakeside Convention Center. In a vast grassland, initiates set up
a huge tent. They displayed a large eye-catching banner, which read "Quan
Yin Method," and Master's stately portrait that could be seen from
far away. Many interested visitors came to have a closer look.
In the booth there was a beautiful array of sample booklets, books, News
magazines, audio and video tapes, et cetera. People were happily surprised
to learn that many of these things, including initiation, were free. Many
of them stated: "In the commercialized modern society, everything
is for economic gain, and it is incredible to see that such a great method
and beautiful books are all free." Master once said, "the Truth
is priceless." Remembering this, we were even more moved.
All the initiates who participated in the activity noticed that in the
past, initiates had pro-actively distributed books to people; however this
time, people requested books on their own initiative and their eagerness
was greater than before. This shows that more and more people are interested
in spiritual cultivation. The second activity initiates participated in
was the "Asia Festival" organized by the city's ethnic communities.
On the first day, they showed tapes of Master's lectures, the "Worldwide
S.M Celestial Clothes Fashion Show" and displayed Master's books.
On the second day, initiates demonstrated the making of vegetarian dumplings
to promote the benefits of a vegetarian diet. The dumplings were served
to visitors for free. The atmosphere was warm and many visitors established
an affinity with Master. After several consecutive activities, many initiates
realized from their experiences that participating in Master's work made
them progress quickly spiritually. They also felt Master's strong blessing
power. A would-be initiate said that he was unable to calm his mind to
do the Convenient Method before, but during the whole week after participating
in Master's work, he felt a lot of blessing while he meditated and therefore
made great progress. He expressed firmly that he wanted to continue practicing
and hoped that he could be initiated soon.
Master once said, "To deliver others is to liberate ourselves."
Through these activities, we now have a deeper understanding of Her words.¡¹

Participate In The Art Of Living Festival Activity
[Capetown] The Art of Living Festival held in Capetown recently drew many
people interested in finding ways to improve their health, as well as their
mental and spiritual well-being. During the Festival, our booth attracted
many people who watched Master's video and discussed Her teachings. One
lady, who teaches a form of meditation, found Master's teachings very pure
and said that she would definitely investigate the Quan Yin Method.
Many tourists visit Cape Town, and happened to meet this opportunity to
contact Master's wonderful teachings. One gentleman said that he would
attend the planned follow-up lecture to learn more about Master.
Through this Festival, fellow practitioners have gained valuable experience
in introducing Master's teachings to the public. The reward for doing Master's
work is the privilege of having the opportunity to do so. The Cape Town
Center will make the best of any opportunity to continue promoting Master's
teachings.

A severely malnourished Rwandan boy manages a smile despite being close
to death. He is one of tens of thousands of famine victims in Rwanda cut
off from food by war. More than a million Rwandan Hutus fled from camps
on the Rwandan and Burundian border last October and November after Tutsi-led
rebels took up arms in the area vowing to topple the government. Around
600,000 returned to Rwanda in November via Goma, but hundreds of thousands
more fled west into the jungle with former Rwandan government soldiers
and militias held responsible for massacres during Rwanda's 1994 genocide
of the minority Tutsis. About 100,000 Rwandan Hutu refugees have been living
in horrific conditions at Biaro and Kasese, two jungle camps south of Kisangani
in Zaire.
The death toll from cholera, malaria and malnutrition stands at around
40 a day, with bodies lined up under blankets along a mud road leading
through the camps. -- Reuter picture.

You May Not Know
By Fellow Initiate Cho Kin-Da, Hong Kong
It was many years ago on a Sunday afternoon, when I was living in Formosa.
After lunch, the guard sent Master's message for us to all go to the back
hill because She was giving a lecture there. I want to explain first that
every time Master has given a lecture, I had never been able to grab a
seat in the front row. However, quite strangely that day, fellow initiates
"graciously" let us have front seats. But dumb me -- only later
did I find out that Master would be using the Buddha's "roaring lion"
method to lecture. So it was no wonder that the initiates had so "humbly"
let us have the front seats while they sat far away. I sat right in front
of where Master sat. Although I had been with Master for a while by then,
my brain was still very stubborn. My habits had accumulated greatly over
many, many lives, so my work and life had not been going smoothly. Not
only that, when I was tired mentally and physically, I often bothered Master
and habitually complained to Her instead of praying. So that day on the back hill, after just a little friendly chit-chat, Master
used Buddha Manjushri's sword of wisdom to cut through all our egos. Each
sentence of the dharma felt like thousands of thunder and lightning bolts
that shocked each one of us to the core and shook our spirits. With our
heads hung down in deep repentance, no matter how stubborn our egos were,
they could not escape. At that time, subconsciously, upon receiving such
a special blessing, tears started streaming down my face. It was like rain,
washing away the dirt within me.
After that day, my "complaining" habit subsided. Not only that,
but now I often feel grateful, and cherish everything around me. The miraculous
thing was, not long after that, I also got through a difficult period in
my life. Naturally, my appreciation of Master cannot be described. Another
plus from that incident was that I felt a lot of respect for fellow initiates
and did not take them for granted anymore!¡¹

Pearls Of Wisdom
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu Center, Formosa
October 25, 1995 (Originally In English)
Whatever you do, if it's a good, noble idea, you put all your effort, that
is devotion. So in everyday life, whatever you do, if it's good for yourself
and other people, put all your best. That doesn't mean that you have to
be successful in order to know that you are devoted. You don't have to.
Whether you are successful or you fail, if you have put out all your best,
your most sincere desire to do that, to accomplish whatever you do, or
to try to make that person happy, that is already devotion; because devotion
brings concentration, one pointedness; and devotion, one pointedness brings
success and happiness to you.
Especially, if you do it for a good cause, for a noble ideal, because at
that time you concentrate everything on that thing and then you forget
everything else so your mind is very clear. That is also a kind of putting
down everything. That's also a way of practice. Ah, that's also a kind
of samadhi. That's why it will bring you happiness and relaxation, and
then a contented feeling.
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hualain, Formosa March 22,1989
(Originally In Chinese)
True samadhi means that we communicate with our highest wisdom, or the
so-called God or Buddha. When our spiritual body ascends, it will be filled
with happiness, love and the will to serve sentient beings. When we are
out of samadhi, we carry with us the full love to bless any of the people
around us.
When they get close to us, they will feel very comfortable and happy. Their
illnesses might be cured or their anxieties eased. They will also be enlightened,
et cetera. That's true samadhi. In order to obtain this kind of samadhi,
we have to keep the precepts, practice the correct method, and have the
right concepts.
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu Center, Formosa Oct. 27, 1995
(Originally In English)
Your children will not get anything from you -- maybe no money, no fame,
no position, no title; but it doesn't matter. We practitioners do not care
for these. If we have, fine; if we don'tt have, it's fine. Everyone must
fight for themselves, must defend themselves, must work themselves up into
a high position in society or into the kingdom of God without us having
to use our glory to cover them. Because each one is born from the Most
High power, then this power will take care of them ac-cordingly; and they
will have to develop and use their own wisdom accordingly to progress themselves.
We have not to worry about our later generation whether they have enough,
whether they're rich or poor, whether they will become senator, president
or not anything, because God will take care of that. It's enough that we
live an exemplary life and then we leave this precious substance of Truth,
goodness and beauty to our children. That is the best property that they
can inherit from us, and that's the best glory as well.

True Story
By Sister Initiate Chen Suyun, Nantou, Formosa
May 12, 1994 is a day that I will not forget for as long as I live. That
evening, I was speeding away on my motorcycle towards the Qigu Center in
Tainan. The lights on the Majia Highway were dim and the road was under
repair. The surface was uneven and bumpy and I was having a rough ride.
Suddenly, I saw a huge rock lying right across my path. It was too late
to swerve and in a matter of seconds, my motorcycle overturned. In what
seemed like a haze and yet a dream, I saw a woman dressed exactly the way
I was laying on the road. By her side was a green motorcycle that was overturning.
This scene lasted a few seconds and then I lost consciousness.
About half an hour later, I slowly regained consciousness and found myself
lying in the emergency room of a hospital. I was covered with blood and
still wearing my helmet. I felt as though I was on a roller coaster racing
away at the speed of light as a result of the heavy impact that my brain
had suffered during the crash. My instincts told me to meditate and calm
down, to let myself recover.
The hospital staff asked me my name, address and telephone number, but
my mind was completely blank. I could only identify my own name from my
identification card. I tried hard to think and finally gave the doctor
my address: "Number such-and-such, Alley such-and-such, Wuxing Street,
Taipei."
The doctor shook his head and said, "No, that cannot be. You must
be suffering from concussion. How could a little woman ride a motorcycle
all the way from Taipei to Tainan? Try to remember your telephone number
so we can notify your family."
I still couldn't sort things out in my mind, but finally I gave him a number.
The call got through but the person at the receiving end said, "This
woman doesn't live here. But we know her."
Not long after that, the owner of this telephone number appeared. Apparently
the only phone number I could remember was that of the director of a company
where I had once worked. The strange thing was that he had been dead for
four years and I had never dialed the number since his death. Yet at this
most crucial moment, it was the first clue that I found in the database
of my memory. It was the number of the son and daughter-in-law of the director,
and they came to see me. Because of their concern I regained my memory
and remembered who I was. I then asked the nurse to notify my family. The
address that I had given the doctor was that of my home 20 years earlier,
before I was even married. The house had long since been demolished and
a mansion built in its place, and the address had changed as well.
This indeed was a wonderful though strange experience that once again gave
testimony to Master's words: "Our minds are making records every day.
Wherever we have been, we are sure to leave behind traces. How can we then
not be cautious and careful about the paths we tread and the words we utter,
lest we might have regrets?"
Before I met Master, the way I thought was easily influenced by how I felt
and I often found myself in despair. Today, I think of the human body as
nothing more than a corporeal thing that can move and wonder. After many
summers and winters when the outward appearance has been worn with the
passing of time and the breath of life is no more, wither will we go?
Through Master's guidance, and my personal experiences, my way of thinking
has changed perceptibly - "positive energy can transcend all else".
Now I have found that the human body is great. During the time when this
human body is functional, we should use it well to benefit sentient beings.
Meditation can free us from confusion, from emotional attachments, and
from clinging to this world. When we have completed our human lessons on
this Earth, the fruit of enlightenment awaits us in another dimension of
time and space. So why should we worry that we may not become Buddhas?
Be positive about yourself. Wake up each morning to a day that will surely
be filled with joy and hope.¡¹

Hot Topics
At the end of the twentieth century, the world situation is changing rapidly.
Many people are longing and waiting for the Golden Age to come to open
a new page in our history. On the other hand, they are scared by the various
rumors of the impending end of the world. Responding to this hot topic,
Supreme Master Ching Hai has answered questions of some initiates and non-initiates
and delivered some exquisite discourses.
We have taken some excerpts to offer readers some correct conceptions to
deal with the current upheavals happening in the world.
*****Just to be vegetarian, to meditate, that's a preparation for eternity,
not for destruction. Destruction comes and goes. Eternity is always here.
We prepare for God, not for destruction; because at the end of our lives,
when we lay down in the coffin, it's also our own destruction anyhow, whether
the world still goes on or not goes on. So the most precious preparation
is for God, going back to the eternal.****
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Group Meditation, Hawaii, U.S.A.
September 3, 1994 (Originally In English)
Q: What can we do physically, what can we do spiritually to prepare for
this upcoming destruction that is going to happen in the world, as one
of the things You have said is to become a vegetarian?
M: I don't know if we can stop. We were discussing the facts only. I didn't
really predict anything, yet. I just said what we are doing now and what
is affecting the world, as a matter of fact. It's scientifically factual,
everyone knows. Not that I predict in the year 2000 the world will be gone.
I didn't say anything like that. We were just saying things like, what
we are doing right now; for example, cutting all the forests. This all
of you know affects the world. So we were talking about a vegetarian diet
as a benefit there of.
I guess it's a little bit late now to stop all this. It's going on every
day in every corner of the ignorant population and perhaps it's too late
to stop. But we can minimize it and we can strengthen our spiritual selves
in order for miracles to happen. That is also to influence our community
with our spiritual strength and knowledge that they will go our way.
Whatever destruction might happen or might not happen, we are very safe,
we are very secure in our knowledge in God. At least we are not frightened.
We do not go berserk. We will know what to expect, whether we lose our
lives, it's not a big deal. I told you already, life is a joke. Only life
eternal is real. We just get caught, get hooked into this instrument for
a while and then we're scared to lose it. But it's nonsense, because we
have a more beautiful instrument elsewhere and anywhere to use. Just to
be vegetarian, to meditate, that's a preparation for eternity, not for
destruction. Destruction comes and goes. Eternity is always here. We prepare
for God, not for destruction; because at the end of our lives, when we
lay down in the coffin, it's also our own destruction anyhow, whether the
world still goes on or not goes on. So the most precious preparation is
for God, going back to the eternal.
Yes, you can do. Pray for the whole world because looks like we are going
to have trouble, as predicted by many of the clairvoyant people in the
world, including your American famous Dixon or Cayce. So you'd better pray
and meditate. We don't have too much time. We never have too much time.
I hope you believe in what I say. I wish you would. And whatever we can
save, we save. Whatever is damaged, well, that will be God's will.
Our world has been through a lot of upheaval, change. This is inevitable.
There is no need to say we are superstitious and think that the world will
end or something like that. We don't have to believe it. It will happen
one day or another. Or it doesn't have to end. It's sometimes destroyed
in some parts and it will inconvenience a lot of people and destroy a lot
of people's lives and property. But this is not something that's superstitious.
The world has always changed according to the mental expectations and the
life attitudes of the people of this planet. It will change sometimes.
So the best thing is we look to God. Now that we already have the connection
with God, it's all right for us, whether we come or we go, whether we stay
or we go back to Hirm. At least we don't fear. We have no fear but we have
to also sometimes pray for God's grace for our brothers and sisters in
case they still can be saved in some ways, and "please God hasten
the means for them". You also try to work in your community, spreading
the Gospel, telling them that only God can save them.
God saves us doesn't mean that God always will protect our houses or protect
our bodies, but Hes will save us afterwards, after all the ephemeral things
have gone. Hes saves us eternally. We will be there eternally.
There's nothing to death and life because we don't die and we're not really
born. Just we get caught in some of the instruments here and then we think
we are Mrs. Smith and Mr. John and things like that. We are all over the
place. We are the whole universe. We are not in this body. We're hooked
up to a little part in this body, that's all. Just like electricity is
caught in one wire or another. Actually it is not the bulb, this is the
electricity. It's just a shell that we happened to get trapped into. We
use it sometimes just for some purpose.
The Father can take care of the whole universe, just a bunch of you is
nothing. Actually, the power of the universe, the supreme Master power
does everything and regulates all things. But knowing this sometimes make
us feel also frustrated. Why doesn't Hes let us be virtuous and holy, wholesome
instead of letting us go through all these tribulations, tests and suffering?
The best way is to have free-will, the choice in the beginning of our lifetimes.
At the beginning of all lives, we have choice. We have a voice inside telling
us this is better, this is good, this is not. But sometimes we like to
play, we like to do the things that are not according to the parents' teachings;
like children, and hurt ourselves. That's the problem. Sometimes when our
parents say: "Stay away from fire."
"Don't play here. Don't play there," we do it just for the sake
of curiosity. Then God lets us learn the hard way. The easy way, is up
to us. Therefore some people stay holy, wholesome, some people go astray.
But that is only for a while. They will suffer the consequences, then they
will awaken from and through the suffering, become wholesome again, and
turn back the right direction.
Therefore sometimes people are also right in saying that suffering is a
blessing in disguise from God. Otherwise if we are always happy and have
everything in our life smoothly, we don't appreciate and we do not try
to listen to God's will. Truly it's like that.
That sometimes probably is the effect of the suffering. During suffering
times we turn inward more, we pray more; because at that time, we know
whatever it is, that there must be something, we have to rely on that thing.
Nostradamus, he also said that, in this coming time, probably there would
be a lot of disasters, a lot of trouble that even some people who never
believed in God before would begin to pray to God and the saints. That's
what he said. Probably that's the way it will be. God tries to help us,
to turn our minds back to the source of all blessings and eternal life.
Do not worry even if you lose your life, you don't lose anything. I told
you already, life is a joke. It's a setup for us to play around and to
learn whatever we're curious about. That curiosity wants us to learn; and
when we're fed up with it, God will help.
Even if God does destroy the planet, we are not too worry. Of course, we
try to save it. It's a beautiful planet. It's the only one we have at the
moment. But if Hes has to do it, it doesn't matter. So vast, the universe.
A lot of planets that we could go to and run around. Don't worry. But be
good, otherwise, we may not even have that privilege. That's the problem.
Even though God is very neutral -- no male, no female, no good, no bad
and no judgment -- but the way we do things carries in itself the consequences.
Just like God or our parents love us anyhow, whether we're bad or good,
their love will not die. But if we do bad things that are not according
to the parents' warning, then we bring harm upon ourselves. We bring sometimes
disaster, sometimes injury, sometimes damage to our beauty. But still after
we get damaged, the parents love us. They might love us even more but that
doesn't help us. Their love won't die but we damage ourselves. That's the
problem only.
Therefore, we just have to be good, be virtuous, be God-like, so that we
are near to God for our own benefit.¡¹

The Best Way To Glorify Our Life
Spoken By The Supreme Master Ching Hai
International 7-Day Retreat, Hsihu, Formosa
October 27, 1995
(Originally In English)
As practitioners, we don't have to always prove to people that we are good.
We live a life of goodness, Truth and beauty. It's there for everyone to
see. If they want to see it, if we can, then they see it. Otherwise in
life we should be flexible, we do everything when it's a profit to other
people.
Of course in the context of the moral standard and ethical regulations
of our group, of our ideal, we live the noble ideal that we propose to
other people. But nevertheless we do not shine too brightly, then put down
everyone else around us and make them feel bad and humiliated. If we do
that, we will not be successful in leading them into our ideal, into our
noble way of living. So we are good but not too glorious, not too showing
off. A truly humble person doesn't know what humble is, he's just like
that. Whatever he does, he just thinks about people and then he does things
accordingly. He doesn't mean to be. He doesn't show himself as a very very
moral, virtuous and good person in order to impress anyone. But he truly
lives the life he believes that he should.
Even if he does lives the life that he believes, people do not feel uncomfortable
being around him. That "I'm holier than thou" kind of attitude,
"I'm better than you" kind of appearance, it's better just to
be ordinary. But this is not to pretend to be. We should reach that state
in which we are ordinary but we do not even feel that we are ordinary,
we are good but we don't even feel that we are good. We live the good life
but as normally as we breath and as we move our legs and arms and body
in expression.
Then at that time, people will love us but we are very ordinary. People
will respect us without any position in society. People will follow us
even without us preaching one word of goodness and virtue to them. They
will just see us and they will just like us, they will just feel comfortable,
not suppressed, not humiliated. They will just take us as a friend. At
that time, we would be successful in transmitting whatever ideas that we
try to follow or we believe. But even at that time our life itself becomes
an ideal, becomes itself a doctrine, becomes an eloquent lecture without
any language.
Otherwise the worldly languages are so much. We can't always try to translate
what we want to say into their language and it takes a lot of effort. So
whenever you practice better, well and sincerely, everywhere you go you
will feel that people are attracted to you without any reason. On the airplane,
on the bus, on the train, in the market, in the school, on the street,
anywhere people just come to you, are friendly to you, and they will ask
you some questions. Then accordingly maybe you can impart to them the precious
knowledge that you have acquired by your effort and through the Quan Yin
Method. So that is the best way to glorify your life.

Love In Action
Remember Master's Grace And Spread Her Love Love Overcomes All Obstacles Helping The War Stricken Refugees In Rwanda
"I am happy here, I am happy there, I am happy everywhere...Why be
sad? Sadness is not good for anything..." The words of this song will
reverberate forever in the hearts of Jakarta fellow initiates.
To express our sincere love for Master, after the group meditation on Saturday
(the day before Mother's Day), fellow initiates gathered to pray that Master
would stay in good health to take this flock of 'lost lambs' back Home.
Later, everyone sang "Happy Birthday" and "I am Happy Everywhere"
with great emotion and bliss, and all felt Master's all pervading blessing.
Early on Mother's Day morning, fellow initiates went to a nursing home
to visit the elderly residents bringing with them Master's infinite love.
Gifts and Master's sample booklets were distributed while singing joyful
songs. There was much happiness in the eyes of the residents, as some sang
and danced with us, or even asked to join us in prayer. Master's loving
blessings pervaded the whole venue. Some old folks couldn't help shedding
tears of joy, and said that they were extremely happy.
Observing their happiness, we were also very happy. It was a great honor
to have this opportunity to take care of our brothers and sisters. This
visit to the home for the elderly was a good lesson for us to learn how
to love others. It also served to remind us to always find ways to develop
our compassion and to be ever humble. Every person is God, so taking care
of them is taking care of God. We also realized that love is not only to
be kept in one's heart or just verbalized, it is to be put into action.
Through this love in action activity, we deeply understand that on the
long journey of spiritual cultivation, love is one of the prime incentives
to keep us moving forward.¡¹

Report Compiled By California, Indiana, and Ohio Fellow Initiates, U.S.A.
(Originally In English)
April 1997, parts of North Dakota were devastated by a flood, forcing more
than 70,000 people to evacuate their homes. Many suffered from the loss
of their homes, businesses, and even family members. With great compassion
and concern for the flood victims, Supreme Master Ching Hai urged disciples
to visit them and deliver Her financial aid and love. The rescue team,
consisting of initiates from the US states of California, Minnesota, Indiana,
Kentucky and Ohio, first gathered in Fargo, North Dakota to organize our
efforts before distributing relief supplies to people affected by the flood.
We rented two large trucks and purchased supplies consisting of food, personal
articles, and cleaning items. We then sorted and bundled the supplies into
thousands of love-filled "Care Packages", which more importantly
contained Master's blessings. With two trucks fully loaded, we visited
seven flood shelters, with the last two being a Bible Study camp and a
distribution center in Grafton that was the most memorable and heartwarming.
We arrived late in the evening at the Bible Study camp and immediately
offered our services. Upon seeing us, the pastor was amazed, and said "It
must be God who sent you here! It's really a miracle!" It turned out
that they desperately needed manpower and were praying for help to reorganize
the overwhelming quantities of donated food and used clothing. They only
had a few volunteers and felt lost. So we immediately went into action
and completed their "mission impossible" in less than two hours.
The efficiency of our work surprised them.
Later, they were again overjoyed to learn that we brought "tons"
of new underwear, socks, and all sizes of children's clothing, which they
did not have and needed desperately. Some victims were elated to receive
underwear and socks that night, telling us, "You guys are life-savers.
We've been recycling two pairs of underwear." Also they were all bare-footed
because they had no socks. Fortunately, the sister who purchased these
items had learned from Master during the relief effort in Northern California
in January, 1997. Master specifically instructed her to identify those
items which most people neglected to donate. Those same items were neglected
this time too. Even though people gave many things, few people donated
underwear and socks, let alone brand new ones.
Upon hearing of our arrival, one woman could not believe that our initiates
had come from so far away to help them, and so she came in person to welcome
us. Learning that she had two children, we asked her to select clothes
for them. With wide open eyes, she stared with disbelief at the many brand
new items of children's clothing that we provided.
She then asked: "Who should I write a 'thank you' letter to?"
We told her it was Master who had sent us there and who had donated the
items, and then we gave a sample booklet to her. She immediately grabbed
it as if she had found something very valuable. Looking at Master's picture,
she said: "This is amazing. Really amazing!" Later, she excitedly
showed the booklet to others, telling them that these wonderful people
were with Supreme Master Ching Hai, and that all the relief items were
from Her.
We then traveled to the shelter in Grafton, North Dakota. There, volunteers
at the local distribution center felt overwhelmed joy to see that we brought
a truckload of relief supplies, which were desperately needed because about
3,000 victims needed assistance, and they had not received materials from
other organizations except for one truckload of quickly dwindling items
from the local Salvation Army.
The local residents immediately joined our initiates in unloading the "Care
Packages" in an assembly-line fashion. It was a touching scene to
see the "Care Packages" being passed from one hand to the next,
as if the packages themselves represented Master's love linking all of
us together. We all gave a loud cheer when the last package was unloaded.
A very warm, loving atmosphere permeated the center, and everyone's face
lit up with God's love.
Flood victims, shopping in the center for much needed clothing and food,
were delightfully surprised to receive brand new materials neatly and individually
packaged, since most of the items they received before were second-hand.
They also were amazed to find that we had come from very far away. They
were obviously deeply moved by the love and care from Master.
Upon seeing our group and the thousands of packages we were unloading,
one lady couldn't help but cry immediately. She hugged initiates as if
we were close family. With tears pouring down her face, she told us that
she had lost her husband in last year's flood. Still in shock, she was
moved to see that God sent us to comfort her, so she kept hugging our initiates
again and again, while repeatedly saying, "Thank you." "These
are tears of happiness, not sadness. A house can be replaced, but not a
life," she added.
Through the disaster, she truly realized the value of life beyond this
material world. Upon learning that all of us, as well as the relief items
had been sent by Master, she tightly held a sample booklet and lovingly
stared at Master's picture with great gratitude and admiration. Because
of Master's blessings, every victim felt so touched, moved and relieved
of their emotional pain, as if they realized that they are indeed loved
and taken cared of by God.
At this moment, the initiates were truly moved by Master's great compassion
and unconditional love. They realized that in God's kingdom, only love
is real.
Most of the victims showed a high level of spiritual awakening after the
disaster. They appreciated our presence more than the materials we brought
them. One elderly lady, accompanied by her daughter and grandchild, received
many relief items including baby formula. The mother and daughter both
commented, "You are such beautiful people. Your teacher is such a
wonderful lady! Anyone who did not believe in God should believe now!"
They told us that God gave them love and strength, and assured us, "We
can make it!" They were positive that they could overcome their hardships
and begin a new life with greater inner strength.
Another elderly lady in her eighties said that she couldn't believe that
we showed up from nowhere. She thought that it was a miracle! She told
us how nice it was to see that God's love helps strangers join together
to help each other; aloof neighbors to become like a family; and makes
everyone feel the oneness again.
Wherever we went, we brought the victims hope and love. We all knew that
through us, Master aroused their inner beings. A lot of them cried because,
through us, they could feel the great love from God.
We began to feel that all of us are one. Throughout our trip, we felt that
Master was guiding us. We greatly thank Master for blessing us during our
mission of helping the flood victims and for giving us a chance to learn
to serve; to overcome our egos when working; and to develop our compassion.
With Master's love, we overcome everything.¡¹

Master Says
Spoken By Supreme Master Ching Hai, Group Meditation In LA, USA March 13,
1996
(Originally In English)
There was a joke about love between family members. A millionaire had a
car accident. He was brought to the emergency room. Three of his sons walked
up and down the corridor outside, waiting anxiously for the doctor to come
out. When the doctor came out, the three of them ran to him and said, "Doctor
is there any hope?" The doctor said, "No, no hope. He just has
a little broken arm, he'll be well in one week." (Laughter)
The answers and the questions are perfect examples of this, like the way
you react to me because sometimes I answer your question not the way people
expected it -- doesn't look like it fits the question, but it does. I just
answer the inner question, not the outside. Sometimes you formulate it
in a long winded way and it just turns around and around all the time.
I know exactly what you want. Like that doctor, in normal circumstances
we would think the three sons would be asking about the well-being of the
father but the doctor knows. Perhaps he knows too well. (Laughter)
Yes, the practitioners of enlightenment are like doctors, they can diagnose
our sickness without us knowing, know the innermost of our wishes. Sometimes
more than we do. That's why we live the way we do now. We're cheating ourselves
every day. We think we are okay. We think we are good. We think we are
noble. We think we are perfect, that's why no one can touch us. No one
can tell us anything. No one can scold us or correct us because we are
already perfect. We already know what to do. We just know, but we don't
do. That's what makes the difference between a Master and some one else.
The Master is not born perfect, I must remind you. I have done a lot foolish
things in my life, youthful foolishness. I was foolish, made a fool of
myself. I ran out of school and went see movies when I should have been
sitting there in mathematics lessons, et cetera. I did a lot of bad things
too. I raced a motorcycle a hundred twenty kilometers per hour, with only
Honda. I broke the exhaust pipe. The Honda can go faster but it made a
lot of noise. I didn't care about other people's ears, I only cared that
I raced better than the next one. (Laughter)
I didn't tell you I was born perfect. If I was good in school maybe it
was because I was born with a little more IQ. But it didn't mean that I
really strived to be good or was consciously being good. So the Master
is not a perfect person. Never is, never will be. You must know. But the
Master is the one who can Master his or her mistakes. Can learn from them,
and vow to make it better, every day. Just like being a genius is continuous
hard work to keep it, similarly mastership is the same. Mastership is all
about mastering yourself, nothing else. If anyone else follows you, it's
just by the way, just because of your aura. Your true sincerity attracts
them from inside. That's why you don't need to talk. You don't even need
to tell them anything. They believe you. Mastership is like that. Do not
believe that I was born perfect, I am at the moment perfect, or I will
ever be perfect. No! I'm learning like you. But I have mastered myself.
I don't let my mind dictate to me what to do. Because I know the mind.
I make friends with it, we make a deal, saying "You do this and I
do that, both of us don't bother each other. If you do it well, I'll also
reward you. I feed you well, don't I?" I tell it, "I give you
anything when you want it." Just that now it doesn't want much, because
it knows it cannot get much with me, so it forgets it. Even when it wants
to sleep, I say, "No, get up and work." Then it has to do it.
So it gets used to it after ten years. It says, "It's no good talking
to this girl. She's very stubborn. She just does what she wants, and no
good arguing." That's all there is to a Master, continuous striving
for perfection, for a better, nobler personality. A better ideal not really
personality because when you talk about personality you mean you still
want fame and all that. You know you still have ego, wanting to be proud
of yourself; it's not true. Just that you think whatever you want to do,
whatever you think is noble, is the highly idealist, benefits others, is
good, then you must try to do it. Doesn't matter what the cost, just do
it and don't talk. That's the only difference. Otherwise, what is the difference?
If we were to be operated on right now, neither brains would be much better.
Maybe I am a little bit higher IQ or you are higher, but that doesn't mean
that we are much different. Our brains are the same. Our will-power is
the same. Except that you exercise to make it grow stronger or not, this
is your free will. Most of us abuse our free-will in a harmful way, in
a retarding way, slowing our progress to higher consciousness.
Don't ask me why we have to strive higher. It is more comfortable to be
a noble being, to be a wiser being, than just always to be ignorant, sluggish,
slow, lazy and a "couch potato" just laying there and waiting
for things to happen. It's better not to worship me, better not to follow
me, just follow my example. Worship the result that comes out of my effort
and then do it. Do the same, similar, then you'll become Master in no time.
Teach yourself to do what is better than ordinary people, to do the things
other people cannot do when it benefits humankind and yourself, to endure
what other people cannot endure when it benefits people and betters your
judgment and wisdom. Do whatever in your power to know yourself -- that
you can, to discover that your greatest strength is still further to be
discovered, that you are nobler than you are at present, that you can do
many other things that are a lot of benefit to yourself and other people.
Then when you die you know. At that time it might be too late to look back
and regret, but you'll feel very painful. That's why when most people die
they are in agony. They haven't finished the things that they should have
done, and their conscience strikes them. Their mind controls the body and
the conscience affects the physical being. So if your conscience doesn't
feel well, you feel sick, you feel painful.
Sometimes you feel very sorrowful in some situations. Then you feel pain
in your body and muscles too. Sometimes some people put you into a terrible
situation or frightening, then all the muscles become painful. First it
is different, then later it becomes all painful. Sometimes you can hardly
move. Sometimes you are in deep sorrow, the whole body is so tired like
you have been running for a hundred thousand miles non-stop. Sometimes
you have some trouble, then you cry for many hours. After that how do you
feel? Sometimes relieved but very, very exhausted. Is that not so? (Yes)
Especially if that trouble really bothers your heart, really makes you
feel very, very sorrowful, then your body also feels like collapsing. And
if you have a strong will-power and tell yourself that it's nonsense, whatever
happens, happens; now get on with it, forget it; go do other things; cheer
yourself up, find something else better to do; then you will forget.
Many people don't have this will-power and intelligence to discriminate
between passing moods. They sink themselves into the mood and that makes
them more and more miserable every day, weaker and weaker, and they become
sick -- psychologically broken. Then it takes a long time to heal. Sometimes
cannot heal. They are broken completely -- their mental defense system.
Then they have to go to hospital, or stay there for good, becoming a mentally
incapable person, being a burden to themselves, their relatives, friends
and the society.
So it's very dangerous to let go of your will-power and the purpose of
noble sacrifice. Must always strive to do better all the time. Don't make
any excuses for yourself. You can excuse other people but never yourself.
Introspect every day, see if you have made any progress. Otherwise don't
tell me anything. Don't tell me that you want to help humankind, you want
to spread the Truth, and that you understand the Truth.
There is another joke about the Truth. There was a Zen Master who had some
disciples. One of them wrote to the Master every now and again after initiation.
Of course, just like you write the spiritual diary and send to me, or sometimes
to report to me what kind of "progress" that you have made. So
that disciple had written to the Master and said, "Master I am really
deeply involved with enlightenment right now. I spend all my time in search
of my inner true self." The Master read only the first line and then
kicked it into the dust bin.
A long while later he wrote another letter to the Master, "Oh Master
now the whole universe responds to my innermost thoughts. How incredible
the Truth is! How magnificent human wisdom is! How great is the universal
Power!"
The Master just blew his nose with it, (laughter) and threw it in the toilet.
A third letter, he wrote again, "Oh Master, I have compassion now
for all humankind and all the underprivileged beings! Even an ant, I hear
his heart throbbing, I feel his soul striving! Oh Master, what a wonderful
discovery! I will strive even more, I promise you! I will be your best
disciple, you will see."
So the Master wiped something with it. (Laughter) You know where, I won't
say it. (Master and everyone laugh) Then threw it in the toilet. He felt
hopeless.
The fourth letter, the disciple reported again, "Master, now I am
one with the universe! Everything is me, I am everything! There's nothing
that is not me. I am everything. Oh, I congratulate myself!" (Laughter)
The Master didn't even bother to touch it. He just let the wind blow it
to anywhere it might go and didn't want to say any anymore. Now, for long
time the Master said, "Don't bother writing to me anymore. You just
waste the paper and pen." So the disciple didn't write anything anymore.
Many years passed by and the Master was kind of feeling a little bit sorry,
being so harsh to him last time. Remembering his fantastic disciple --
long time no see no hear -- so he kind of sent a message to him and said,
"Hey! What happening now?" (Laughter) Perhaps he missed his nonsensical,
"big universal" letters. "How is your spiritual progress?"
So the disciple wrote back, two words only, on one big piece of paper:
"Who cares?" (Laughter and applause) Do you know how the Master
reacted now? Yeah! He went and drank coffee or tea or non-alcoholic beer
with 'seven-up'. (Master and everyone laugh) That's the way.
Only when you know that you are okay then you don't care. Otherwise doesn't
matter how much you write to me, "I love You, the universal Power,
compassionate me," and whatever, all this is nonsense, all theory.
That's why many teachers of theory, whenever they open their mouths, they
talk about compassion, enlightenment, wisdom and all that; but they don't
do anything about it. Don't even know, they just talk about it. That's
very boring, very difficult to make them realize that we don't need talking.
Why I'm talking all the time is that you like it. (Audience: Yes.) Besides
I don't talk to teach you. If you think I'm teaching you, you're wrong
because I'm hopeless with you too. I know I can't teach you anything. I
just amuse you with my different expressions, hoping that you might catch
something you like and hold to it. Then you'll remember me and won't forget
to practice. One day you'll know everything yourself, not through my teachings,
maybe thirty percent through my teachings. But it's more or less just so
that you'll remember me and then we can connect inside.
To be honest with you, I don't believe that anyone can teach anyone at
all. But whatever I can do, I just try my best just because you ask for
it. You demand it so I do it. Not because I believe I can teach you by
words, by talking, by language. But I believe that we can establish a very
deep connection with each other, and through that deep connection we communicate
inside. That's the only teaching that might perhaps happen. Otherwise you
already are Buddha. You are an entity just like I am.
What is the need for me to tell you what to do? You have everything I have.
Just that through the inner connection with each other, you are willing
to be reminded of your true Self inside through my inner true Self. Then
our inner true Selves will become one together, merge again in the whole,
and there's no teaching at all. Originally there was no need and there
will never be any need for any soul to learn anything, because the soul
is born perfect. It's just that we, the human brain, the ego, are not born
perfect.
That's why we make mistakes and we have to learn to control the tendency
of falling into the mistakes again because it's comfortable, because it's
easier to just go along with it than to check ourselves. That's why many
noble ideas in society cannot be realized; because most of the people go
with the trend of the majority of the people and don't want to stick out,
and don't want to go for what they believe is the best, the noblest way
of life.
Many people they say they like my teachings, they want to be enlightened,
they want this and that. But vegetarian, "Oh, it's inconvenient. What
will people think? What will my parents think? What will my children think?
What will my wife think? What will my friend think? What will my colleagues
think? What will my boss say?" Everything is very important to you,
except your own liberation, except your own survival. That is ridiculous.
After all, no one can help you if you die tomorrow. If you go to hell,
your boss, your wife, your mother, your father, doesn't matter how many
persons you have surrounding you, you go alone. It's very true everyone
knows. Maybe you know, not everyone else knows.
So take care! Remember. We might die tomorrow. I've had many disciples
who have died already. Not that I am sad about it, just that life will
end. Believe me, it will. Mine will too. I'm happy when it will. I don't
wait for it; but if it comes, it's okay. What I means is, we can't live
forever and we don't have time tomorrow. What happens if you don't have
time tomorrow?
Most of the time we believe that tomorrow we'll have more time than today,
and we never do. Tomorrow we will only have more work to do and less time,
because yesterday's work we haven't done, the future work is still waiting,
and tomorrow's work is there. So we always cheat ourselves every day that
we are okay, that we have time now. We can get away with it, fine, but
not finally. Finally we will understand that we are the loser if we keep
listening to the mind. I'm afraid of many things, I have told you -- including
flying. I don't like flying. I'm not afraid to die in the airplane but
I hate the narrow space in airplanes. I hate the smoke that flies everywhere.
Doesn't matter first class, second class, or non-smoker, the smoke doesn't
care. Free "gift" for everyone, one cigarette for all. (Master
and everyone laugh) That's very economical. I hate all of this. I don't
like. But if I have to do something, I do it. Doesn't mean I like it. I
don't care whether I like or not like it, if the thing must be done, I
just do it.
I can have my opinion, whether I like it or not like it. It's okay. I tell
my mind, "Okay you don't like it, I accept it, but we must do it."
I don't tell it that it must like it. I don't have to bother about the
mind, whether it likes or not likes; whether it's in the mood or not in
the mood to do it. I accept everything that it blah, blah's inside, but
I do what I want. That's the difference between a
Master and a disciple. That's all there is. If you want to be a Master
quickly, master yourself, master your decisions, master what you want to
do in life, what you hope, what is dearest, best and the most beneficial
to your growth and your fellow beings because the soul is ever clever,
wise and pure. But if it is always being caged in a defiled body with a
very terrible friend like the mind, then it cannot use it's mighty power.
Just like you lock yourself in your own house. How can you get out? Even
if you yourself, lock yourself inside a house, still you are locked. Doesn't
matter who locks, as long as you still lock yourself inside, you are inside.
If you don't want to open the door with your own key and go out, it's your
own fault. Doesn't matter how clever you are, if you're locked inside,
you're still locked. You cannot say, "Well I locked myself, it's different."
There's no difference. If you stay inside one month without food, without
drink, without friends, without telephone, without communication, you are
locked inside and then you die.
Similarly, if we don't stand up for what we think is correct, perfect and
right, then we never will. And no one can do it for us, not even a Master.
The Master can only tell you the road, but you have to walk. Of course
when you're sick, unable, the Master will carry you. But he can't carry
you forever. It's no good for you, makes a cripple out of you. Think about
it.¡¹

Elevation Of The Soul
Special Reports
The Souls Of Fellow Initiates Baptized By The Nectar Rain -- Australia
Internatioanl 4-Day Retreat
Compiled By The Formosan News Group
On May 5, 1997, the working team from the Sydney Center arrived at the
retreat venue, as did fellow initiates from all over the world. Initiates
came early, aside from meditating together to purify themselves, they also
cleaned the camp site and helped actively prepare for the retreat. Under
the blessing of Master's infinite love, everyone from the different countries,
cultures and ethnic groups, had no difficulty communicating despite the
obvious language barrier. With seamless cooperation, they worked and learned
together.
The Cataract Scout Park is located in the mountains near Sydney, not far
from the Cataract Reservoir. It is a very big camp site that's used for
international scout activities. It has some simple facilities and basic
structures including: washing rooms, barracks for cold weather, kitchens,
dining halls and some crude shelters. Some roads are paved while others
are just dirt tracks. The different camp grounds are separated by natural
woodland. On the site, we noticed many plants unique to Australia. The
deliberate attempts of the local people to protect the environment, and
the independent spirit of the scouts was clearly discernible. The natural
environment, basic facilities, fresh air and the starry night sky made
fellow initiates feel that they were in an ashram, so they very much felt
at home, relaxed and secure. Many initiates simply called the site "the
ashram", and treasured and maintained it like one.
The 4-Day Retreat Commences Amidst Nectar Rain
Just after three o'clock in the morning, fellow initiates poured into the
newly erected meditation hall. Guards quickly moved through the camp sites
reminding everyone to attend the meditation on time. At four o'clock, with
Master's Buddhist Chanting recording playing in the background, the first
meditation session of the retreat began, no doubt with the blessing of
all the Saints. The meditation area was a giant marquee built with an aluminum
frame and white canvas. During the day, sunlight filled the marquee with
a warm, soft brightness, soothing the meditating Bodhisattvas. At night,
the light within the marquee made it look like a giant lantern, illuminating
the grassland outside. The temporary meditation area looked as if it was
made of crystal that its beauty even enticed the rain and wind gods to
join us for the retreat! According to our understanding, the Cataract Scout
Park Reservoir is the main water catchment area for Sydney. Park Rangers
told us there had been no rainfall in the area for the last two years.
However, as soon as fellow initiates arrived, the weather turned cold and
it began to drizzle. The rain became heavier on the first day of the retreat,
drenching the dry, dusty camp areas. Most fellow initiates were not bothered
by the cold wind and heavy rain; they seemed to be mentally prepared, and
even felt happy for the inhabitants of Sydney. Our staff members reminded
everyone to keep warm and had inexpensive and practical cold-weather clothing
available for fellow initiates who needed them.
By this time our beloved Master had not yet arrived, so everyone was reminded
to meditate diligently to purify our actions, speech and thoughts, and
raise the spiritual ambiance of the retreat. This first day of the retreat
is a day for two thousand initiates to fight for their spiritual elevation,
with Master's loving blessings.
Master Arrives On The Second Day!
Fellow initiates were extremely happy and surprised when Master entered
the meditation marquee in the morning. Even those in samadhi quickly opened
their eyes to welcome Her. Master first walked through the marquee greeting
everyone cordially. Instantly, bliss pervaded the whole place, and the
cold wind and rain didn't seem to be a problem anymore. Master's new elegant,
short hair-style dazzled everyone. Master said that She realized the working
members must have gone through a lot of ordeals in preparing the international
retreat, because nothing that benefits the multitude can be accomplished
without hardships.
Similarly, Master also had to overcome many obstacles and hardships just
to get to Australia in time, but She knew that many initiates had to sacrifice
their job, money or the risk being misunderstood by their families just
to attend. Therefore, to satisfy our longing, and to give the greatest
spiritual help to initiates, She ignored all difficulties and managed to
arrive on the second day.
At Master's temporary residence, the retreat organizers had arranged seven
guards, two cooks and three drivers for Her. Knowing that many of us normally
do not have enough time to meditate, Master would rather they meditate
more, thus told these initiates to go to the meditation marquee to meditate.
She also hoped that we would treat Her normally, because She is a simple
person. Excessive respect or manners always make Her feel tired. Though
we have good intentions to take care of Master, not many of us can really
understand Her. When there are too many people, complications often arise.
Therefore, sometimes Master prefers to look after Herself, which is faster,
simpler and trouble free. What She really needs and treasures is less annoyance,
so She can have time to enjoy a little peace within. She again asked us
not to glorify Her excessively. She pointed out that Her purpose in being
here is not just for us to get familiar with Her. She said that making
friends is not our goal in life, only God is our real friend, and to train
ourselves to become Masters is our main goal.
Afterwards, Master allowed initiates to ask questions, which She answered
patiently and in great detail. Knowing everyone's yearning, Master kindly
promised to join the meditation sessions as much as possible, and to see
initiates in groups so that they could have ample opportunity to ask questions.
That afternoon, Master again, in response to initiate's longing, spoke
to us in the marquee, and let the Australian initiates of Asian origin
go onto the stage and ask questions. Having settled all their doubts with
great patience, She led us in chanting the Holy Names, and taught us the
precise pronunciation of each Name. When Master began to chant, everyone
felt the tremendous but gentle vibration, which immersed us in the ocean
of love and bliss. Over the next few days, after the discourses, Master
lead us in chanting the Holy Names again, and told us to teach the new
initiates in our respective Centers how to pronounce the Holy Names properly.
Day Three - Boundless Patience, Boundless Grace
That afternoon, in the hall and Her tent area, Master received groups of
Au Lac initiates, Korean initiates, Chinese initiates (not from Formosa)
and other initiates from Asian countries. Other initiates either listened
to Master's words through the translation, or meditated to enjoy Her blessing.
To satisfy each initiate, She spoke continuously for hours answering questions.
It was obviously tiring. That evening, Master allowed Formosan initiates
to sit on the stage in groups. A fellow sister mentioned about the slow
progress in Her spiritual practice, and asked how to improve. Master told
her to be more loving to her family members. As her love increases, her
spiritual practice will also improve.
For the whole day, and with extreme patience, Master listened to and answered
all questions raised by initiates. She even gave some initiates, who needed
more encouragement, Her personal belongings. Everyone was touched by Her
boundless love and compassion.
Though Master had already reminded initiates to ask only questions directly
relevant to spiritual cultivation, regrettably some initiates bombarded
Master with irrelevant, trivial matters involving their relatives or friends.
Master couldn't help but respond with humorous remarks like, there are
so many people and it is so noisy, no wonder your practice is no good!
Why have you brought your whole family, you bought only one air ticket;
this is illegal!? It is our greatest fortune in innumerable eons just to
be able to take one look at an enlightened Master. How can we bear to abuse
Master's compassion that She offers us without reservation?
By this time, Master was extremely exhausted both mentally and physically.
The hearts of all fellow initiates ached for Her, and we were also very
upset by the excess and selfish demands of a handful of initiates. We understand
that, after we are initiated, the omnipresent manifestation form of Master
is always protecting us, until we become a Buddha. This is the ultimate
grace that enlightened Masters bestows on their initiates. And that the
physical Master gives any blessings to initiates, it is out of Her compassion,
and not an obligation.
Although it was very late at night, however, to give maximum blessings
to us, Master again chanted the Holy Names with us before She left. Her
patience and love are truly indescribable.
The Retreat Ends And The Whole World Rejoices On Master's Birthday
Before the retreat ended at noon, Master again came to the meditation marquee
and invited initiates, who had their birthdays on the same day, onto the
stage to share the good wishes from fellow initiates. To conclude the retreat,
Master concisely elucidated on the theme of "true love". She
said that if we truly love a person, no matter his situation, whether he
is good or bad, we would still love him.
However, we often fail this test, and forsake someone when he is in a poor
situation. Although he is in such a bad situation, we choose to leave him
at that moment, which exposes our cruelty. Actually, this is bad for us,
Master said, and not to the other party. It shows that our love is not
really unconditional, but only given out of our necessity. We must be introspective
and check whether we stick to our family or loved ones because of our needs,
or out of unconditional love. To learn to love unconditionally is precisely
our aim of coming to this retreat -- to prove that we are God. Finally,
Master reminded us to take home this true love.
To celebrate Master's birthday, the kitchen team prepared a sumptuous meal
for everyone. While enjoying the meal, to our delight and surprise, Master
visited the kitchen and dining areas in a motorized golf cart. On the grassed
area outside the kitchen, Master ate some food prepared by the kitchen
staff. She had a casual chat with everyone, including guests who gathered
around Her cart to share in the laughter and conversation. She also greet
the guests and allowed them to ask questions too.
After lunch, guests and fellow initiates entered the meditation marquee.
The fierce wind that had battered the canvas walls during the past few
days had subsided, and so had the chilly rain. The whole place was beautifully
decorated with heart shapes that enhanced Master's graceful, beautiful
photograph. A soft light shone through the translucent ceiling, illuminating
the large picture of Ayers Rock, which is a well-known sacred site for
Australian Aborigines, that hung at the back of the stage. The stage was
impressively decorated with four pillars on both sides, each embellished
with plants and colorful balloons. Finally, as longing eyes beamed out,
Master entered the marquee wearing a simple, sky-blue gown that looked
so graceful and elegant on Her.
Before the program began, an Australian initiate dressed as a kangaroo
walked around the venue, followed by fairy girls and boys waltzing with
rare animals found exclusively in Australia. The first performance featured
a piece of Aboriginal spiritual music played on a didgeridoo (a long, wooden
Aboriginal flute) accompanied by an American Indian flute. The sound was
so deep, so rich and unique, that it led the audience into an untouched,
natural space.
The brilliant programs that followed were performed by fellow initiates
from many countries. It included a dance in which males impersonated females,
a fascinating solo and a chorus, a variety of different types of musical
instruments, Chinese Tai Chi boxing, Au Lacese pantomime, and various dramas
which conveyed profound messages. Many of the performances were originally
created by fellow initiates. A group of Indonesian sisters performed a
traditional God Dance. Their dancing was so wonderful that they won thunderous
applause and cheering from the audience.
A well-known Au Lacese singer offered Master a beautiful song called "Mother's
Love". Her singing was so sweet that the audience requested an encore.
In responding, she invited another vocalist to join her and they both sang
"The Love of Vietnam". The fantastic performance by fellow initiates
and our guests filled the winter afternoon with warmth and an artistic
atmosphere, and won high praise from Master. Then came the most important
part of the program. With everyone singing "Happy Birthday to You,"
Master went onto the stage to cut the birthday cakes. Again Master thanked
the Australian initiates for their efforts in arranging everything, and
She also blessed everyone present and all the mothers in the world. The
birthday celebration ended with fellow initiates and guests all satisfied
spiritually and physically after sharing the birthday cake and blessed
food.
Epilogue
Under Master's boundless love, fellow initiates were noticeably elevated
spiritually, as well as being perfectly taken care of mentally and physically.
The retreat organizing team were grateful to Master for allowing them to
learn from the experience of the Long Beach retreat last year, so that
they could work smoothly this time. Those who joined the working team in
retreat for the first time were especially impressed by the cooperation
of fellow initiates from various countries. The book exhibition, Celestial
Clothes and Jewelry displaying fully satisfied initiates' longing for spiritulity
and beauty, helping them to elevate in all aspects of their spiritual practice.
After the retreat, initiates who remained at the camp site walked to the
Cataract Park Reservoir and found that it was overflowing. Undoubtedly,
Australia has benefited from the nectar rain that came due to Master's
presence.¡¹

Spiritual Corrspondence
By A Would-be Initiate, Shanghai, China
Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai,
How are You? I am a would-be initiate from Shanghai, Mainland China. My
mother and sister have both been initiated. With Your special blessing,
I have had many wonderful experiences while practicing the Convenient Method.
After I practiced meditation for a while, I saw a circle of light like
a time tunnel. Once during meditation, I saw a very bright yellow light.
In the yellow light, there was a little monk, and later I learned that
he was doing Quan Yin meditation. Another time, I meditated with some initiates
(they were in another room) and felt as if I had walked into their room
and could see them meditating. However, I could not bear the heat from
the energy in the room so I had to leave. After they came out, we verified
that the positions where they had sat were exactly as I had seen them.
The initiates were all surprised and they said that Your method was the
true method.
Later I became a complete vegetarian. In my meditation and daily life,
I feel Your unparalleled love and care. During meditation, I see the lights
of various levels, as well as the sun, moon and stars, the blue sky, the
ocean, et cetera. Your transformation body explained to me each level and
light.
Later, while meditating, I had the sensation of being uplifted. I felt
that I was flying in space and going up very quickly. Through the wisdom
eye I watched the color of the "nirmanakaya pearl" change from
light yellow to white. I merged with the white light at my wisdom eye.
Later still, when I meditated, I heard the sound of insects in my ear,
and then I heard from both the wisdom eye and ear the sounds of bells,
ocean waves, the wind, thunder and a zither, as well as an "om"
sound. These sounds have all been mentioned in the book "The Key of
Immediate Enlightenment".
Once while sleeping, I recited Your name and heard a loud explosive sound
at my wisdom eye and ear. From that day on, I can always hear sounds when
meditating. I can also get into samadhi more easily and see bright worlds.
I seem to understand the lights and sounds of each world and know how to
do Quan Yin meditation naturally. The inner wisdom seems to know everything.
I can also understand almost everything written in Your books. When others
ask questions of me, I can answer them immediately, regardless of myself
knowing the answers or not, my responses are always correct. Sometimes
this even surprises me.
Recently when I meditated, I felt that starting from inside I grew very
big, and I encompassed a vast area of space. I felt enormous while surrounded
by white light. But there was a barrier that I could not break through.
Then I prayed for Your blessing in order to get rid of my ego, and I saw
a stream running down from high above with a log floating in it. Then I
understood that You wanted me, your disciple, to be at ease and follow
the path naturally.
Now, I meditate three times a day: morning, noon and evening. Each time,
I go into samadhi and wake up finding out that one hour has passed, without
feeling tired. Your transformation body taught me to recite the Holy Names.
You even let me see the chanting in writing, but I could not understand
the written words. I also could not remember how to chant after I came
out of samadhi, but only felt that the chanting was like a stream of sound
and I was in it.
On another occasion I saw You in white and You were very bright. Later
I saw in the News magazine that You were just like that on the Ching Hai
Day celebrations. You also told me the causality regarding my previous
lives and my mission in this life. Many things that You told me during
meditation have been verified.
I, Your disciple, thank You very much for Your blessings and loving care.
You also let me learn how to use my wisdom, et cetera. Some of the inner
experiences are unable to be expressed in human language and can only be
known by the inner Master. Both my inner feelings and experiences prove
clearly that only the Quan Yin Method is the true method of attaining the
Truth.
I feel that You are with all initiates, even would-be initiates, all the
time. You protect us and take care of us. Every request we make of You,
if it is beneficial to others or to our spiritual practice, You will surely
help and bless us!
The above is a small part of my experiences in spiritual practice. I have
tried my best to describe them but still many cannot be described, only
can be known inside.
I wish Master the best of health and happiness!
Your disciple from Shanghai
