Some people praise me that I work very hard, I can do it because I am a
Buddha. I say maybe I am a Buddha but my body is still human. So if I succeed,
it's only because I am always trying, trying and nonstop trying. I never
give up to my body's tiredness, or the mood of my mind. So its' a nonstop
trying. Every woman, every woman can do what I do. I mean physically if
they want to.

Selected Questions And Answers
Spoken by the Supreme Master Ching Hai during the group meditation in Seattle,
U.S.A.
April 7, 1994 (Originally in English)
Q: For enlightenment, is service in love to humanity as important as meditation
or is service more important than meditation practice?
M: Both have to go hand in hand. We meditate because we want to do service
better, we want to be clearer in what we do. Therefore, we'll be more efficient
in our work and more service to others. Without meditation, sometimes we
have very best intention and we are willing to serve people, but we don't
know what is the best way. Therefore, meditation is a helping factor to
true selfless service.
Q: Is it possible to live a life completely free of doubt and fear forever
and if so, what does one need to do or not do?
M: Fear and anxiety comes only from darkness, from ignorance, from the fear
of the unknown.
Once we get to know the stable side of nature, the real side of our life,
our fear and anxiety disappear. We only fear because we thought after this
life, we have nothing. We only fear because we know only the ephemeral
existence of this world. If we know that life is eternal, if we know that
we are the greatest beings in the universe, we have no fear at all.
So I invite you to get to know yourself through the means of initiation
(into Quan-Yin practice).
Q: I love my original master very deeply and usually recite his name. If
I continue to do this, will I lose Your love and blessing? I love both
of you. No difference because without my original Master I would not be
alive to sit here and listen to Your lecture.
M: I'm not in competition with anyone. You can love ten more masters if you
wish. No problem. Just be enlightened. That is the best way to pay, to
show the gratitude to your previous master. Don't need to even be grateful
to me or anything. Whatever you do, I love you all the same. It's you who
probably do not love yourself, because you would think, "I do that
very bad, I do this very bad." And it's you yourself, stop feeling
being loved.
Q: How long must one meditate to reach enlightenment?
M: Enlightenment comes immediately. As soon as you sit down with the Master
and sincerely want it, it comes immediately. Even sometimes before initiation;
sometimes I have not finished the instruction, and people already got enlightenment.
Some people are in a hurry, you know, they have no time to wait.
But the meditation takes place daily, because we always want to be in the
enlightened state, and we always want to renew our acknowledgment of enlightenment.
Or also we want to strengthen it, to strengthen, to expand until infinity.
Otherwise, even if you meditate for one hundred years, you don't get any
enlightenment.
Meditation doesn't bring enlightenment, the Master power does, because
during initiation, or during so-called meditation in our method, you do
not meditate, because meditation means effort, but in our way, it's effortless.
You might sit there sometimes even sleepy and then enlightenment even comes,
even then. Or you will be enlightened during sleep because the Master power
will wake you, wake your soul during your sleep. While your mind is asleep,
your body is at rest, your soul will be awaken into the world of light
and wisdom.
Therefore, meditation is not a means to enlightenment. But for lack of
vocabulary in this world, we have to call it meditation. Actually, you
just sit there and receiving the grace of God and acknowledging your own
supreme power. There's no meditation actually that is involved, because
anything that is earned or it is a result of some kinds of action, it is
still the worldly production. It's still within the material framework.
Therefore, our meditation is a non-meditational meditation, effortless
meditation.
Q: What makes you the equal of other great masters?
M: The same thing that makes you equal with other great masters that makes
me equal. All of us are equal. You are as great as Jesus and Buddha, if
you want to be, if you want to know, if you know where your greatness is.
I know. That's what makes me great. If you don't know, okay it's fine.
If you want to know, you will be as great as any.
Spiritual Interludes
Letting Go
By Resident Initiate Chiang, Hsihu, Formosa
One winter day, I drove Master to Yang Min Mountain, arriving at dusk.
As it was cold and foggy on the mountain and there was no hot water,
taking a bath was definitely not a pleasant idea. Suddenly, Master called
me, "Tong X, you may take your bath now." Therefore, with the
determination of braving death, clenching my teeth, concentrating on my
wisdom eye, I enjoyed the freezing taste of a cold stream water bath.
To my amazement, as I bathed I felt warmer and began to enjoy it. Having
finished the bath, a refreshing, clear and calm current flowed within me.
I took a deep breath, inhaling the cool and fresh mountain air. I could
vaguely sense the divine bliss. When I returned to Master, She looked at
me with a witty and mischievous expression, and then said, "Isn't
it cool and refreshing?"
Master blessed me through this incident, teaching me how to let go my habit,
how to break through the limitations of the mind. Challenging my own self
and conquering my acquired habit was a wonderful experience in realizing
the inner almighty power.
The Wonderful Effect Of The Buddhist Chant
By the News Group, Ilan Centre, Formosa
While driving on the way to Hsihu Center for group meditation, a resident
fellow sister from the Ilan Centre suddenly asked, "Brothers and sisters,
do you always listen to Master's Buddhist chant?" She then spoke of
her insights derived from listening to the Buddhist chant. "Besides
purifying the atmosphere, it also elevates the spirit for meditation. Previously,
whenever I was feeling lazy, I would listen to the Buddhist chant, then
I could gather my spirit and meditate very stably. When I was a new monastic
disciple, Master often told me to listen to the Buddhist chant each time
I was moody. I would soon feel better and my emotions pacified."
This also reminded us that, some fellow practitioners in illness felt their
pain much relieved and their soul comforted when listening to Master's
Buddhist chant. Also, the best help we can render a deceased relative is
playing for them Master's Buddhist chant, which is rich in blessing.
Of course, the greatest benefit is that it reminds us to practice diligently,
and strengthens our faith. Many thanks to Master for Her meticulously love
and intention, using all kinds of appropriate methods to benefit and take
care of fellow practitioners and other people.
Spot Light
Become A Vegetarian In All Aspects
Spoken by the Supreme Master Ching Hai at a group meditation in Austin,
Texas, U.S.A.
August 14, 1994 (Originally in English)
The Meaning Of Non-violence
Garson, the Zen master of Japan, taught his disciple like this: Many people,
they go against the killing, because they say they want to save all sentient
beings including animals and ants. "Okay, that's fine," the master
said. "It is correct. We should protect animals and even insects.
But, those people who talk about vegetarianism and protecting animals and
insects, etc., they kill other things. For example, they kill time, and
they kill their property, they kill the economy of the world. They kill
political issues, political goodness, for example." And this we can
see anywhere. There's no need to prove it.
Also he says, "Above all this, a person who always talks and preaches
idealism, or religious issues without enlightenment, without offering people
real enlightenment, these people, they kill religions." In this case,
in this book it says, these people who talk without enlightenment, who
talk without offering enlightenment, they kill Buddhism. He's a Buddhist
monk, so he can only talk about Buddhism.
So there are many kinds of killing. The story is that short, but we can
make it long, we can stretch it. If a person kills his own time and kills
other people's time by always talking nonsense, by talking long time on
telephone, and by always engaging others in senseless talk or senseless
actions, or doing many things that are not necessary for the body, speech
or spirit and not necessary for anyone, and sometimes even harmful, these
people are also killing.
And many people kill the economy of the world too. For example, sometimes
they have a lot of food. They grow too much and they have a big harvest.
And then because of wanting to keep the price up, they throw everything
in the sea. Not even feed it to the animals, or not even giving it to the
poor people. Just to keep the money, the prices up. And this is nonsense.
Everyone who grows vegetables or food always prays to God to have a good
harvest, and then when they have it, God gives it to them to share, they
throw it away. And then they complain again. "How come God is not
fair?" Next time, no more harvest. "Ah, why no water, no rain?"
Understand?
Just like in Texas, they make a big lake just to raise fish. And they take
a lot of water from Austin, from the underground water because of that.
For example, this is also killing people. If the earth cannot produce quickly
enough, if there's not enough rain, all the people here die. Not enough
water, and no trees will grow, no harvest, no food, and children will die.
For example, I wouldn't say you do that, but maybe one or two still continue
with this way.
So in that case, eating vegetarian is not that much help, because you also
burden your body and then you cannot be clear in your mind and then you
meditate without result. And then you go and bother me. Because you cannot
listen to what I say, you cannot understand, and you cannot be one with
me inside, then you doubt my teaching, for example. And then you also,
by the way, take other people into your doubt with you. Some people who
are still weak and who need you to help, then you take them out, because
you yourself are not stable enough. Therefore vegetarianism is not only
eating tofu and avoiding meat and fish, but "ahimsa", meaning
non-violence, includes a lot of aspects, as the master Garson just mentioned.
Bring About Peace By Meditating Inside
I do not need to explore further. You probably will understand. There are
many kinds of killing. If a person who practices inner tranquility but
bring noisiness everywhere he goes, he's also a killer, because he kills
the tranquil atmosphere wherever he goes. He makes people nervous. He makes
people feel uneasy going around with him. He make people not want to see
him. So doesn't matter how much cabbage and tofu he stuffs into his throat,
it makes no difference. He remains an animal. You know what I mean? Because
a real person, a real human being, brings peace and happiness everywhere
he goes. That is a real human being.
There's no need to talk about Buddha land or Kingdom of God or anything
else before we can find our own peacefulness inside. We have to bring it
everywhere. We have to cultivate it within, so that everywhere we go, we
represent that. We are the peace, we are the Kingdom of God, we are the
angel, we are the Buddha. There's no need to always aim to another Buddha
land, while here making a mess in this planet; the only one that you live
in at the moment and the only one that you can rely on for food, for guidance,
for support, in order for you to develop. So we have no right to make trouble
anywhere we go. We just can bring peace, offerings and sacrifice. That's
the way of a practitioner. There's no need to go anywhere and tell people
you are vegetarian and that you meditate. What is the use if you don't
meditate inside, if you are not a vegetarian inside? You know what I mean?
It's alright. I allow you time to change, but not too long. Not two, three,
four years. Two, three months enough! You expect your children as young
as that to know everything you say, to obey everything you order. Right?
"And you, you should understand quickly, be genius, be first in the
class." And to do the housework the way you want. And to be just like
a grown-up. But you yourself, so old, and cannot change in a few months.
So how can you teach your children? If you're like that, better just forget
it. Just better kneel to your children, and say, "I'm sorry I have
scolded you." You're not worthy. We have to be something before we
can talk to other people. If not, it's empty talk, nobody will listen.
Even though they might listen, but inside they feel this is not true. Heavens
And Hells Are All Created By The Mind
There is also another Japanese Zen. He's a Zen monk. He lives in a temple.
And there was a samurai came to visit him. You know samurai? The one who
practices sword. He came to visit him, and he asked the master, "Can
you tell me really there is hell and heaven?" And master said, "Yes,
there are heavens, there are hells." And the Samurai didn't believe
him. "Can you prove it to me? You have to prove it, otherwise how
can I believe you?" The master said, "What for do I prove it
to you?" He said, "If you don't prove to me, then I don't believe
you."
And the master started to scold him. He said, "Look at you. Who are
you to threaten me like this? Ah! Your face looks like a weak and dirty
beggar outside there, and you think I'm scared of you. And you can convince
me that you are samurai? Your face, it looks so ugly, so lousy. And you
look so weak. Ah! You think you can scare me?" And the samurai, took
the sword out saying, "I will prove it to you." So the master
smiled and said, "Okay, you can open the door of hell now if you want."
And then the samurai just shook up. He realized the master wanted to teach
him by this. So he put back the sword inside. And the master smiled again,
and said, "Here you open the gate to heaven." So... (Applause)
This story, I guess some or many of you already know, but just for an example.
Yes! That heaven and hell, we decide. Understand? Whenever we go anywhere
we bring happiness and peacefulness and harmony to other people, that's
when we create heaven. And when we go everywhere and make people agitated,
make people angry or don't want to see us, or create disturbance and inharmony,
that is the time when we create hell. That's very easy.
So every time, everyday, check up your own inner kingdom, which way you
open. There are two sides of us always, the Ying and the Yang, the positive
and the negative. We have to be in between, always in balance. Otherwise,
if we tip too much to the negative, then all our actions, thoughts and
speech will be negative. If we tip too much to the positive, we also will
be out of balance. Because we still live in this world, we have to be practical
also. We can't just everyday, twenty-four hours, close the eyes and be
in samadhi, even when driving car. (Laughing) That I don't recommend.
Be Vegetarian In Speech, Thought And Action
So many kinds of vegetarians, you must understand. There is a saying in
Au Lac. They say that the vegetarian in the heart is the best. Why do they
say that? It is because our actions, speech and thoughts must be together,
uniform, we don't just eat vegetarian only. That's only the action wise.
And then when we talk, we talk like having scissors or a stone and cutting
everywhere; that is not vegetarian talk.
If we say we eat vegetarian, but our thoughts are very violent and sharp,
and do not care about other people's feelings, and always being selfish,
always trying to get everything for ourselves first, at any cost, at the
cost of other people's convenience or feelings, then it's no good. No good
for us, no good for the family, and then at large, it's no good for the
nation and for the world.
That's why the Chinese people say, "First we have to cultivate our
own self, the big Self, the Wisdom, and then we can take care of the family,
and then we can take care of the nation, and then we can pacify the whole
planet." And that is quite true.
But most people, they just want to pacify the planet. You know, leap frog,
quick, quick! Otherwise, "Oh, take care of ourselves? That I know
already". "Take care of my family? Oh, my wife can do it."
"Take care of the nation? Oh, well President Clinton does it. I take
care of the whole world the best." That's what they think. It would
be better we begin from ourselves.
Special Report
Master In Hsihu
By A Resident Disciple, Hsihu, Formosa
"Master is coming back!" On an ordinary afternoon, the news spread
through all of beautiful Hsihu Mountain like an echo in a valley. It was
so heartwarming to be able to be with Master again within such a short
period of time! To be with Master is the happiest time!
"Joy Rice Rolls" Are Delightful
One afternoon, we were barbecuing by the Nectar River with Master. She
personally made rice rolls and gave them one by one to each resident disciple.
The idea for this special cuisine was inspired when Master recently prepared
Her own meal. It is made by using only half a sheet of dried seaweed, spreading
a layer of steamed rice over it, and then sprinkling the rice with sesame
(or sesame powder) and a dash of pepper-salt. The dish is easy to make,
not troubling others, and very nutritious. When Master ate it, She felt
very light and comfortable both physically and spiritually. She felt very
joyful, so She named it the "joy rice roll."
Master explained the nutritive value of the joy rice roll as follows: "Sesame
seeds have plenty of protein and oil. They are good for the digestion and
very healthy. If sesame seeds are not available, crushed peanut can be
used instead, but sesame seeds are easier to digest. Sesame seeds are more
healthy for people, perhaps because sesame seeds grow above the ground,
receive plenty of sunshine, and belong to the 'Yang', while peanuts grow
underground and belong to the 'Yin'. Seaweed is also a very healthy food,
growing only in very clean places. The Japanese and Koreans are very healthy,
perhaps because they often eat seaweed as part of their regular diet. Fruit
and nuts can also be eaten to supplement the joy rice rolls. If this dish
is too cold or dry for you, you could cook a pot of hot soup to go with
it. All these will supply enough nutrition." Once again, Master teaches
us an excellent way to live a simple life!
The most delightful thing of all was obtaining the rice roll made by Master
Herself. Each rice roll was made with Master's full attention and patience.
As we watched Master, we felt Her boundless love, which touched us deeply.
Received from Master, the rolls were like a bunch of jewels held in our
hands. Each grain of rice resembled a shining diamond that deserved to
be cherished. However, its preciousness and meaning cannot be compared
with any jewel!
The rice rolls were full of Master's love and blessings, which produced
incredible stories. A fellow sister, who had lost her sense of smell for
several months, suddenly smelled the aroma of the rice roll at the very
moment she received it from Master! Another sister, who used to like oily
and spicy food and tried to change her taste for a long time without success,
turned out to like light and simple food after eating Master's rice roll.
Many of the brothers and sisters enjoyed the infinite inner happiness and
peace so much that their souls were elevated! This reminds us of what Master
once said, "When an enlightened Master gives us something, it is not
only for the sake of that thing, but invisibly, there is a lot of blessing
power included. An enlightened Master might express or transmit something
else to us through the material things, which are very precious. We can
feel the changes in our lives if we happen to eat or receive those things."
Sitting by the murmuring river, we pondered Master's love. Our uplifted
happiness could not be compared to anything in this world. Serenity, a
sense of being carefree and enlightenment filled the entire universe without
our being aware of when it happened. Since that day, the joy rice roll
has become the favorite food in Hsihu. Whenever we make our own rice rolls
and enjoy them in a quiet corner, we always remember Master and everything
about Her.
Master And Disciples Enjoy A "Play In A Play"
To spend the festive lunar New Year's Day with fellow practitioners, Master
especially dressed up (as requested) as an emperor of the Ching Dynasty.
All the liaison fellow initiates in Formosa, the initiates on duty as guards
and the resident disciples at Hsihu Center all picked their own roles and
put on costumes of the same era, to join in the play with Master. As Chinese
style music was played, a drama in ancient costumes began crisscrossing,
the different times and space.
The civil and military officials, and imperial guards lined up to greet
the emperor. When Master arrived in an imperial sedan-chair, the Quan Yin
messenger who played a eunuch announced loudly, "The Emperor's imperial
sedan-chair has arrived!" The liaison fellow initiates knelt down
and exclaimed together, "The civil and military officials respectfully
welcome Your Majesty. Long live Your Majesty!" Master responded, "Stand
up and be at ease." Smiles could be detected in Master and the disciples'
eyes, even though they acted out their parts seriously. Then came the three
loud clangs of the gong, followed by the sounds of bells and drums, and
fireworks and firecrackers were set off.
With the imperial guards leading the way, surrounded by civil and military
officials and beautiful court ladies, the emperor toured the entire place.
Wherever Her Majesty went, Her citizens, played by fellow initiates, were
amazed and delighted to have a glimpse of Her dignified manner. After the
tour, Her Majesty took Her seat in the Golden Royal Court to accept the
seasonal greetings from the officials. One by one, the officials came forth
and performed the highest ceremony. Before one's eyes was the drama of
an emperor attending to royal duties with the officials.
Although it was only a simple play, it made one reflect that all along,
since ancient times to nowadays, life is but a drama, and the world is
the never ending stage. The enlightened Master has compassion towards sentient
beings and descended to this world many times, appearing as monks, laypersons,
sages of different religions, kings or ministers, only to cast Her net
of affinity. When the day for deliverance comes, She pulls up, to the boat,
the nets bursting with sentient beings who have made affinity with Her,
and takes them to the other shore. Playing these roles were merely the
true Master's good intentions over eons of time!
The spectators themselves seemed to be in the drama also, experiencing
a deja vu. In or out of the play, who can identify their previous or present
lives?! Perhaps it served to evoke in us some recollections!
Before the curtain was drawn, Master said softly, "I was acting to
amuse the children." Children - children are those of young ages,
and also those with a pure, kind and innocent heart. Our beloved Master,
no matter which drama You play in, all of us children will be happy to
join in!
The Imperial Decree
According to heaven's will, the Emperor so decrees:
To this day, our empire is peaceful and the people happy. The weather is
favorable. The whole country is in prosperity. The Emperor has decided
to award one 'red envelope' to each subject of the nation, who are present
in the New Year assembly.
There are three types of red envelopes --
eight dollars - means prosperity,
ten dollars - symbolizing perfection,
one hundred dollars - means ever-victorious.
Whichever type of red envelope one may have drawn depends on his or her
individual luck and God's arrangement.
The Emperor wishes all the subjects a happy and successful New Year.
By order of the Emperor.
The Legend Of A Taoist (Part III)
Narrated By Fellow Initiate Hu
Nantou, Formosa
Recorded By Resident Disciples, Hsihu Center, Formosa
The Ascent to Heaven
After the initiation, the Taoist returned to the mountain and practiced
diligently following the method given by Master. Once, while he was meditating,
the manifestation form of Master came and told him: The husband of the
fellow sister who lived in his village who just died would be brought to
the Western Paradise. The Taoist asked, "Will Master personally visit
her home?" Master waved Her hand. The Taoist asked further, "Then,
how is he to be delivered?" Master said, "You just go and tell
her my words."
The Taoist did relate Master's words to the fellow sister. He intentionally
went back again on the way home and instructed the daughter and son-in-law
of the fellow sister, "You ought to be on the lookout tonight. See
if there is any bright light or gold light shining. My Master said that
She is going to bring your father to the Western Paradise."
The result was totally unexpected. The one who saw Master was the four-year
old granddaughter of the fellow sister. Observing the child waving her
hands at the sky, the family asked her, "What are you doing?"
"I am bidding farewell to grandpa!" "Grandpa is in his coffin.
How can you bid farewell to him there?" Pointing innocently at a photograph
of Master, the girl said, "She took grandpa's hand and flew in to
the sky."
The next day, the fellow sister fetched the Taoist and in detail told him
about the incredible happening of what her granddaughter had seen - Master
bringing Her husband up to heaven. The Taoist opened the coffin and was
shocked by what he saw. He remembered when he came to help at the time
her husband just died and the corpse looked dark and ugly. Now it was entirely
different. He was wearing a smile on his face, and looked healthy and pink,
very serene, as if he were a living person who was only sleeping. That
was really incredible! This fully affirmed Master's words: For initiated
disciples, at least five generations of their family will be elevated.
The Soul went to the Heavenly Lake Palace
Six months after his initiation, the Taoist followed Master to become a
monk. However, his wife became very ill a few months after that, and remained
unconscious. The Taoist had to go home to look after her. Despite the efforts
of many doctors and visits to many hospitals, the cause of the illness
was never discovered. The patient simply lay on her bed, not eating or
drinking, unconscious, in a vegetative state, for almost two weeks. The
Taoist was extremely upset. He could not find his wife's soul anywhere
in heaven or in hell, despite his searching for her several times during
his meditations.
Normally, he could always help people who came to him with strange problems
or illnesses. Now that his wife was in trouble, he could do nothing about
it. He was really frustrated. His relatives, even his doctor advised him
to treat her as though she were dead, and bury her. However the Taoist
was a loving husband, and could not forsake his beloved wife who had accompanied
him all his life. Besides, he was a tough man who would not be defeated
and who did not believe in destiny. He would not give up, and kept on meditating
and praying constantly for Master's help.
Suddenly one day, his wife regained consciousness. He was very delighted
and asked her, "Where have you been all these days? Why could I not
find you anywhere?" She answered, "I went to a exciting and happy
place. Having so much fun there, I didn't wish to come back. However, the
manifestation form of "Your" Master eventually appeared and told
me to come back. She also said, "You are not supposed to be here.
You should go up there." I was reluctant at heart, but before I could
say anything, She grabbed my arm and took me back. The Master may be small
physically, but She is mighty! I struggled in vain, and then found myself
awake here." The Taoist was very glad that Master had finally brought
back his wife. (His wife was initiated later than him.)
Several months later, his wife started mumbling to him some strange instructions.
For example, she would say, "Should I pass away, do not bury me. Cremate
my dead body." Hearing her strange words, the Taoist realized that
something was going to happen. However, he was mischievous. Pretending
to be serious, he said to his wife, "I would definitely bury you if
you were dead." She was so mad that she would not talk to him. After
some time, she told him again, "You must put my cremated ashes in
the cinerary pagoda nearby. The number is XX." During those days,
because of these unusual statements, the Taoist continued to watch his
wife carefully.
One morning, his wife was standing in the doorway as usual. Observing nothing
abnormal, he went inside to get something. When he came out a few minutes
later, his wife had disappeared. Feeling that something was wrong, he searched
the neighborhood but could not find her. He immediately summoned help from
his son, daughter and neighbors. However, his wife seemed to have evaporated.
Using his magical power, he even asked for the help of the mountain gods
and local deities, but there was no news.
After a few days, he reported the disappearance of his wife to the local
police station. Usually, when mountain climbers got lost, the police would
approach him to locate the missing individuals and he would always help.
Therefore, the police officer in charge was very surprised and asked him,
"You always help with others' problems, why can't you find your own
wife?" The Taoist was equally baffled, and spent his days in sorrow
and agitation.
He thought that perhaps his wife was not taken away by Master, so he went
to the nether world to investigate. The gatekeeper there told him that
his wife was not there. However, the Taoist was determined to search the
nether world. On his second visit, the Earth Store Bodhisattva appeared
to him and said, "Your wife has been initiated by an enlightened Master.
How could she be here?" The Taoist would not listen, because he was
longing to find his beloved wife. However, his search was to no avail.
When he came to the nether world for the third time, the Earth Store Bodhisattva
showed him a long face. Nevertheless, he didn't argue with the Taoist,
observing that he was just about crazy in wanting to find his wife. He
was allowed to enter and search again, but still there was no result. It
happened that his wife had told her neighbor before her own death, "If
I disappear one day, tell the Taoist that he does not need to look for
me. He will never find me!" At the time of her disappearance, another
woman passed by the Taoist temple and saw a gigantic lotus soaring up.
She was thinking she had bad eyesight.
There was no trace of the Taoist's wife even after he searched for several
months. Then one day when he was meditating, the manifestation form of
Master told him, "Your wife is now in the Heavenly Lake Palace."
The astral body of the Taoist went there immediately, and found his wife
sitting crossed-leged in the palace. She just smiled and said nothing when
she saw him. The Taoist was both delighted and angry. Delighted, because
he finally found his wife. Angry, because she did not tell him that she
had come here, making him search fruitlessly for several months. His first
words were, "You came here without telling me, and made me search
for you everywhere. I even went to hell many times. Why did you do this
to me?" "I never knew you would be so stupid to search for me
in hell. You knew very well that I wouldn't be there."
The Taoist asked, "It's strange! How did you hide yourself so that
I could not find you?" His wife replied teasingly, "Are you not
rich in magical powers, and very expert? Why couldn't you find me? Actually
at home, I secretly learned a lot from your book 'Jimen Dunjia' (Taoist
Magical Powers). I was using the 'invisible technique'. If it hadn't been
for Master's help, you would never have found me." He then realized
what had happened, and asked further about the whereabouts of her dead
body. She said, "I am afraid that you will bury it, so I won't tell
you now. When the flesh has completely rotted, you will find it naturally."
Sure enough, many months after his wife's disappearance, a police officer
rushed to inform him one day, that a student who had been mountain climbing
had found a corpse near the Taoist's house. The Taoist was asked to identify
the body. Upon reaching the location, he saw a corpse sitting with crossed
legs. All the flesh was rotten, except, there was one strange phenomenon:
The flesh on her wrist was still perfectly intact. When she was alive,
she had tied on her wrist a short string of chanting beads that had been
given to her by Master, (Master gave her the beads before her initiation),
together with a necklace bearing Master's portrait. Everyone who saw this
remarked that it was a miracle.
A while later, a staff member from the cinerary pagoda came to have a look.
He said that for decades, he had seen countless dead bodies in his profession,
but that this was the first time he had seen such a strange thing. He persuaded
the Taoist not to cremate the body, but instead to plate it with gold for
people to worship. The Taoist answered that his wife especially instructed
to have her body cremated and he would respect her decision. When he put
the ashes into the pagoda after the cremation, the number was exactly the
same as that mentioned by his wife.
As to the place the corpse was discovered, the Taoist and his son had searched
there before and had even rested under a nearby tree. It was impossible
for them to have missed the body. Even if they had been very careless,
the smell of the putrefied body would have been hard to ignore. Incredible
things do happen under the sun!
Wonderful People And Wonderful Events
Cabbage Given Away With Love
By the Hsihu news group, Formosa.
After group meditation, fellow initiates happily take the bags of cabbage
home.
There was a surplus of cabbage and Chinese cabbage last autumn, which the
government bought up in order to protect the farmers and stabilize prices.
Within a few days, more than ten thousand tons, one truckload after another,
of fresh and beautiful vegetables were dumped at the pumping ground, piled
up like a hill.
After the resident disciples at the Hsihu Center learnt this, they drove
trucks to the dumping ground every day and picked up the discarded vegetables.
Apart from taking some to various group meditation centers for fellow practitioners
to take home as they wished, the Hsihu Center also made the best out of
the vegetables. They cooked many delicious dishes, pickled, dried and processed
by other methods, cabbage was served in their everyday meals as well as
at the major group meditations on Sundays. They also asked fellow practitioners
to take the vegetables to the orphanages and homes for the elderly near
their homes.
Being able to contribute a little effort in cherishing God's grace, the
fellow practitioners who participated in the event were very happy, because
it was also an exercise of putting Master's teachings into action.
Vegetables' Best Friend
By resident disciple in Hsihu, Formosa
Coming to Hsihu on Sundays, you may have tasted the lichees from the Taichung
Center, the coconuts from Laiyi, the pears from Taitung, and of course
the pomelos - native produce of Hsihu! These insignificant tokens of love
are the contributions of fellow initiates everywhere, the fruit of their
love and effort. As to the vegetables which are the essentials of each
meal, very often they are the earthly friends that come from brother Cheng's
fields.
The Tremendous Fun And Joy Of A Farmer
Previously an electrical and water works technician, brother Cheng switched
to farming only a few years ago. Thanks to his serious attitude and meticulous
observations in his farm work, he is now an outstanding figure in his field.
He was even awarded a doctoral certificate in Agriculture by the Agricultural
Association.
Apart from his duty of working diligently, he feels that spiritual practice
has brought about an intimate relationship between he and his vegetables.
He has experienced how to cooperate with nature and Creation. At the same
time, he has developed a cool and calm attitude toward life.
Vegetables Have Feelings Too!
Even plants have consciousness. Brother Cheng has really experienced this
in his work. Each day as he steps into his vegetable garden, he can feel
the vegetables breathing. Are they growing well? Are they sick? Do they
need fertilizer? He then carefully observes the changes in the cells in
the leaves, and decides what remedy he should apply. By continuously acquiring
new knowledge, researching the latest technological advances, and caring
for his vegetables lovingly as if they were humans, his children naturally
grow up stronger than others.
He mentioned that if vegetables are planted too close together, the space
for growing is insufficient, and the nutrition is not evenly distributed.
However, if they are planted too far apart, again they will not grow well.
It seems, that if they are not united as a group, like in group meditation,
they lack a mutually beneficial relationship. From the laws of vegetable
growth, we can also observe the spirit of the middle way.
The Whole World Is Responsible For Protecting Nature
Brother Cheng is extremely sensitive to the use of chemicals, which ecologically
devastate the environment and nature. He has come to this intense realization
based on his past working experience. The air, the soil and the atmosphere
have been damaged by chemical substances. Subsequently, there have been
great changes in planting techniques and the survival ratio of vegetables.
The further abuse of using chemical substances will only deteriorate the
situation. Thus, if farmers do not unanimously agree to ecological protection,
they will destroy the life sustaining power of nature that gives us food.
As an ecologically conscious farmer, brother Cheng is enthusiastic about
doing research on improving the screen planting method. This method eliminates
the need for using excessive pesticides. It is more economical than hydroponics
and hotbeds, providing additional nutrition from the air and environment.
Based on his understanding of the unity of heaven, humanity and material
substance, through his spiritual practice, he has greater respect and love
for nature and the plant kingdom.
A Modern Farmer With New Ideas
The recent incident regarding the over-planting of cabbage did not affect
brother Cheng. To a great extent, this can be attributed to his calm and
even-tempered state of mind in his work and daily life.
He does not neglect profit making. However, before deciding on a farming
project, he first investigates the statistics of supply and demand, considers
the growing season of the produce, and assesses information regarding the
deployment of farming produce being grown throughout the country. Then,
he concentrates on nurturing his vegetables to maintain exquisite quality,
which guarantees him a desirable price in the market. This is a successful
example of using in life the wisdom, concentration and calmness developed
from his spiritual practice.
This modern farmer has many new ideas. It is sometimes difficult to introduce
them to traditional farmers with generations of experience in the profession.
Brother Cheng seldom explains himself in words, but proves his ability
through working results. Gradually, he has become a consultant and a model
for other farmers to follow.
Cherishing And Nurturing God's Grace
In each corner of the world, there is always something worth learning.
It is very meaningful and worth contemplating, that even the laws of the
universe and heaven are silently manifesting in a tiny farming field.
For instance, brother Cheng has discovered that, if produce in a field
is crushed to act as fertilizer because of over-planting, the subsequent
produce from this field will fail to grow well or get a good price. His
feeling is that, because the vegetables are so compassionate, they are
willing to sacrifice themselves as food for humans. However, should they
be treated unjustly, and feel the grudging sentiments of the farmers, the
vital force that nourishes this field will be impaired. Therefore, he advises
farmers to give their surplus crops to people as gifts. One small grain
can grow into a tall stem bearing innumerable rice grains. Similarly, God
will not overlook our small kind gesture; therefore more desirable rewards
will result.
Brother Cheng thinks that perhaps the Government, instead of letting these
surplus vegetables that they purchase rot in heaps, should give them to
the army, the hospitals, orphanages and old folks homes. Or, even follow
Master's example of treating the whole world as one family, and give them
to the poor countries in need. We should really pay attention to the fact
that human beings are wasting God's grace, and not cherishing His blessings.
A Farmer's Dream
When brother Cheng was asked if he would pursue agriculture as his life
profession, he replied with a carefree smile, "I will leave it to
Master to arrange." At present, he has a dream - "Vegetables
reappearing in cities." Should each citizen be allocated a tiny piece
of land, they could plant their own vegetables, thus providing themselves
with clean, fresh, uncontaminated and nutritious vegetables to eat every
day. He is doing research on developing the best soil composition and vegetable
species to suit the fast and convenience-oriented life styles of modern
people. The realization of bother Cheng's dream will be good news to vegetarians.
It also will bring about the prospect of humankind returning to nature,
and a simple, self-sustaining life.
Aphorisms
* We have to bring peace everywhere. We have to cultivate it within so
that everywhere we go, we represent that. We are the peace, we are the
Kingdom of God, we are the angel, we are the Buddha.
* We have to be something before we can talk to other people. If not, it's
empty talk, nobody will listen. Even though they might listen, but inside
they feel this is not true.

Relief Efforts
"Love Among Human Beings,
Compassion On Earth"
Over the years, under Master's leadership, fellow practitioners worldwide
like a "universal peace task force", impart God's great, unconditional
love to the helpless people in natural disasters or wars, to the neglected
Au Lac refugees, to the repentant prisoners, to the sick and homeless,
to the veterans. Master also sends timely attention and help to the forgotten,
overlooked or unwilling to go to corners of the world.
To give to those mostly in need and to serve quietly are Master's principles
for giving relief. With this in mind at all times, fellow practitioners
pray wholeheartedly for the disaster victims and the refugees to be blessed
by God's eternal love and for God to help them to overcome the superficialness
of their sufferings and understand the deep meaning behind disasters.
Sending Love And Peace To Chechnya And Bosnia
Because of the wars in Chechnya and Bosnia, hundreds of thousands of people
live in fear. In their hastened and confused steps to flee the war, with
family members separated from each other, and their lives in danger, they
wonder where they might be the next day, when they wake up from their dreams.
Being plugged into such utter misery, the lives of countless people are
suffering immense pain. When their appeal for help reached Master, compassionately
She immediately asked fellow initiates to quickly enquire about the channels
for giving help.
Upon learning that the International Red Cross and the Medecins Sans Frontiers
(M.S.F.) employ the most direct means in their relief activities, both
of them sending their own personnel to the war zones and directly giving
daily necessities and medical supplies to the people, Master gave instructions
to give US$30,000 to the M.S.F., US$40,000 to the International Red Cross,
to help the victims in both wars, and US$20,000 to the United Nations,
as a relief fund. At the same time, She also prayed that the relief efforts
would go smoothly, for the safety of the working staff and for an early
end to the wars.
Master has often mentioned to us that Earth was originally a charming planet
in the big Universal family. However, some people with evil intentions,
who longed for power and personal gain, started a war in the galaxy and
attacked other planets, creating tragic consequences. Some planets were
left without water and air, while Earth had the retribution to face the
fate of being separated. Only when the entire human race awakens, thoroughly
understands the importance of peace and love, and strives to uplift the
standard of morality on Earth, there may be hope for the Earth to become
a member of the galaxy alliance again. The Quan Yin practitioners understand
even deeper that the roots for the strength to save our planet depend on
spiritual practice, through which the loving atmosphere that the Earth
misses, can be replenished. Only then our planet Earth may be saved from
its ill fate.
A Rescue Team Travels A Great Distance To Extend Aid To Japan
Lives Are Priceless;
Saving Others Is Like Saving Ourselves
Upon knowing that the Kobe area in Japan had been severely devastated by
the strong earthquake, Master repeatedly mentioned, "What pains me
most are the people trapped in the wrecked houses, having nothing to eat,
no water or electricity. Physically injured, cold and hungry, their frightful
cries for help have been unanswered. This is truly painful.?Sensing others'
distress as Her own, compassionate Master quickly organized the relief
effort. Immediate arrangements were made for a rescue team to be formed
by fellow practitioners and resident disciples who have medical, first-aid,
purchasing or Japanese speaking skills. They were to help with the relief
work in Japan.
Master foresaw that the basic living needs in the disaster area and the
neighboring cities would be depleted by panicking purchasers. Therefore,
the fellow practitioners in Japan were asked to find out the most needed
items of the victims, which were then purchased in Formosa and airlifted
to the disaster area.
The purchasing of the relief items happened to be during the busy shopping
season just before the Chinese New Year; it was difficult to obtain the
materials. Nonetheless, with Master's blessing and arrangement, everything
required was purchased smoothly one after another. Knowing that the purpose
was to relieve the victims, the merchants volunteered to supply us with
goods that had already been sold. Some of them even lowered the prices,
and gave us full cooperation in delivering the goods. These actions truly
demonstrated their humanitarian and caring spirit. Particularly worth mentioning
was the airline company whose air cargo orders had already been stopped.
Through the earnest help of an express courier company, within the shortest
period of time, the relief materials were finally loaded on the plane.
Helping At The Disaster Site Racing Against Time
The powerful earthquake had devastated many of the transportation routes
and facilities in the disaster area. Arriving at the scene, the rescue
team had to race against time delivering the medical and essential living
materials to the people urgently in need. Each time they obtained some
relief material, the team would split into groups, scan the streets and
lanes for the sick, neglected and not cared for victims. When the cars
could not go any further due to the obstructing wrecked houses, they would
proceed on foot searching every house amid the debris for the victims.
Besides fulfilling our duty, all we could do was silently pray for them,
hoping that the survivors buried beneath the wreckage would soon be rescued.
Once, we met an old lady who had already received timely material aid.
Our fellow practitioners gave her a copy of Master's sample booklet, and
extended to her, through the Japanese interpreter, Master's loving concern
for the victims of the mishap. Upon receiving the sample booklet, the old
lady seemed to have sensed Master's compassion. Blissfully and emotionally,
she bowed and thanked Master and the rescue team. She told us, "Material
help is not the only thing the victims need. They need spiritual solace
and encouragement even more." This is exactly what Master used to
say, "When we are helping the disaster victims, just providing the
required materials is not good enough. We should bring them love, let them
know that they are being cared for, with the love from brothers and sisters.
Therefore, many victims received the love, the deep inner feelings, which
cannot be replaced by money or food."
One thing that delighted the rescue team very much was that in noticing
the tents that we had distributed earlier, many other relief groups managed
to locate the victims and provide them with further aid. The local inhabitants
often praised: "the Ching Hai Team is great!?That was undoubtedly
the best encouragement to the rescue team. Of course, all the team members
understood very well that the high efficiency and working speed of the
team were entirely due to the "long distance" and within competent
directives of Master. (Before our departure to Japan and during our mission,
Master gave detailed instructions and "push" power through constant
overseas calls and insight.)
Words of insight - the "quake" enlightenment.
By Resident Initiate Chen, Hsihu, Formosa
Shattered roofs, twisted steel rods, streets full of garbage, victims crowed
together sleeping in rows on the floors of classrooms, or shivering in
the park - these were the scenes in Kobe a week after the earthquake. Overnight,
these Japanese people, noted for their neatness, have to face the bitter
situation of seeing no end to the unbearable mess, and the prospect of
not knowing when their homes will be rebuilt. Our mission was to find the
people most in need amid this chaotic state.
Actually, Master had already invisibly devised a detailed relief project.
Right from the start, a house had been arranged, large enough to accommodate
the whole rescue team and store the large quantity of relief materials.
Besides, it was only a few minutes' driving distance from one of the group
of people most in need of the relief. Such a big residence is rare in Japan,
and even rarer for someone to have voluntarily offered it. The convenience
of short distance was even more incredible! It happened that wherever we
went, we encountered the truly needy people. On one occasion an old lady,
almost resorted to a fighting manner to secure some sleeping bags and warm
clothing for her children. Unless in utmost desperation, the polite conscious
Japanese would never behave this way. Following an inner feeling, a fellow
brother changed the direction he was driving in. After passing through
several traffic lights, a crowd of helpless people within the debris, suffering
from hunger and cold were found.
Apart from our group, we could see a team of doctors from the SHARE organization
helping in the disaster area. A group called "The Family" provided
meals each day for five thousand people. A Pakistan volunteer from "Peaceboat"
provided hot soup for anybody in need every evening. There were also many
church groups, housewives and students who volunteered to join the relief
work. As well, worth mentioning was a very old, blind hermit who came to
volunteer with his students, who practiced with him in seclusion in the
mountains. It seemed that many noble souls from Japan, or we can say from
the whole world have gathered here, lighting the torch of hope for this
wrecked and desolate city.
For us, a lame youngster who kept running about to direct us, an elderly
person who visited us at midnight providing accurate information, the snow
starting to pour down just after we had finished distributing the relief
materials - from these we could see how Master's power was working nonstop
in the background! We learnt many precious lessons: How our ego hinders
Master's work, exhausts and distresses ourselves, and diminishes the working
results. When we eventually put down our ego, all the jobs were accomplished
easily and happily. Under an increasingly cheerful mood, the real happiness
of helping others was tasted. Truly, it was realized that it was God and
not "I" who was taking care of everything.

Flood Relief Efforts In California, U.S.A.
The winter rain in northern California did not stop for several weeks.
A previous drought had caused the ground to be so hard that it could not
absorb the massive downpour. Tens of thousands of homes were without electricity
and hundreds of people were found homeless as rivers swelled more than
ten meters past the flood stage. Many houses and vehicles were found floating
down the river as the pounding rain continued to fall in the area.
Some counties around San Francisco were declared national disaster areas.
In the areas near Guerneville, the flooding happened so quickly that people
were trapped and had to be airlifted to safety by the National Guard.
Responding to the urgent need of the victims, San Jose, San Francisco and
Sacramento fellow initiates worked together to organize a fund raising
drive; the donations were given to the Red Cross. After that, Master was
still concerned that the victims were lacking in living necessities, so
She instructed fellow initiates to go to the disaster areas to find out
what the victims needed, in order to supplement what the government and
Red Cross could not provide. Master also allocated US$50,000 to fellow
initiates to buy necessities for the victims.
Fellow initiates from San Jose purchased and distributed more than 1,000
bags of food, cleaning supplies and warm clothing directly to the victims.
Each bag also contained a very precious spiritual food - Master's sample
booklet, in the hope that God's loving power and words of wisdom would
cheer-up and bring courage to the victims.
After the supplies had been distributed, local initiates from Guerneville
played their own compositions, on guitar and flute, and sang beautiful
spiritual songs to ease the frustrations and worries of the newly homeless
compatriots.
The visiting initiates were deeply touched at the cooperation and brotherly
love which appeared so naturally among the flood victims. Many people politely
refused supplies that they did not urgently need, preferring instead to
give them to other people who were more desperate, while some people just
politely asked for Master's sample booklets. After our rescue team left,
local Guerneville initiates reported that many local people redistributed
the supplies to their friends and families, but held on dearly to the sample
booklets. They said it was a touching and delightful sight to see people
all over town wearing sweatshirts that were provided by fellow initiates
and reading Master's sample booklets.
Continued Report On Aiding Cambodia With Rice
Love Conveyed In Every Grain Sent From Afar
The three thousand tons of rice that arrived in Cambodia have been handed
over to the government by the rescue team there representing Master. At
the press conference, special representative to the Prime Ministers, Mr.
Nhim Vanda, accepted the rice donation on behalf of the Cambodian Government.
Later, Minister Nhim Vanda visited our branch Center in Cambodia. He presented
a gift - a four faced wooden Buddha statue, in gratitude, for Master's
righteous and charitable action in helping the Cambodian people. In return
for his courtesy, the rescue team gave him Master's lectures books, video
and cassette tapes - these holy teachings of wisdom symbolize the key that
opens up everything.
In Formosa, utilizing the remainder of the donations, another three thousand
tons of rice will soon be shipped, providing further relief to the drought
crisis in Cambodia.
King Sihanouk goes to Battambang Province to distribute rice to the victims
His Majesty, King Sihanouk, personally launched the distribution of the
first batch of three thousand tons of rice. The first destination was Battambang
Province. Because of the King's visit, the people there set aside the tense
and threatening atmosphere of these days. Consequently, everywhere an atmosphere
of cheer and joyfulness prevailed, as if it was the New Year Festival.
The people truly believe that all their problems would readily be resolved
by the presence of the King.
Led by the King, the relief operation proceeded to Svay Dounkeo and Phnom
Sam Pao. Due to the persistent drought, all one could see on both sides
of the road were fields of dried rice paddies. One could imagine the great
shortage of food. The King cordially and kindly greeted and shook hands
with the people. When it was announced that each family would be issued
several dozen kilo bags of rice, everyone applauded happily. As each household
received the rice with Master's name printed on the packaging, invisibly
an everlasting affinity was established with Master. The King also introduced
who Master is, and our group to the people. Their applause demonstrated
their gratitude and respect to Master.
It was the earnest hope of the rescue team that each victim would receive
the loving relief rice. They also hoped that, after this operation led
by King Sihanouk, the government would continue to expedite the distribution
of the rice to the victims, helping more people in need.
Minister Nhim Vanda, special representative to the Prime Ministers, accepts
the rice donation on behalf of the Cambodian Government. King Sihanouk
is highly honored and respected by his subjects. With palms together, a
large crowd listened attentively to his speech. (The Queen is standing
to the right of the King.)
After the cordial introduction by the King, the people show their deep
appreciation for Master's love and to the hard working rescue team.

Combined Reports From Formosa . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Bring The Warmth Of Spring To The Frigid Winter" Activity
According to Master's instruction, in the cold of winter, just before the
Chinese New Year, fellow initiates in Formosa engaged in an activity called
"Bring The Warmth Of Spring To The Frigid Winter" with great
enthusiasm.
Within a few days, initiates in Taoyuan, Houlong, Changhua, Kaohsiung,
Chiayi, Tainan and Pingtung visited a few hundred destitute people to inquiry
about their living conditions and needs. Over half of them were elderly
people living alone. Some of them were physically handicapped. They were
poor and had no one to depend on. They lived in shacks in the mountains
or in thatched cottages in remote places. Some made shelters under the
extended parts of a house or building. When fellow initiates visited them,
some of them were speechless, their eyes brimming with tears. Some gave
lots of blessings to the visiting initiates. Some grabbed the initiates'
hands and talked touchingly about their stories, as well as expressing
their appreciation for the initiates' concern.
After the initial visit, fellow initiates began the relief work. They supplied
money and the most urgent daily necessities to those needy people. The
next jobs were to repair their shelters and to provide them with medical
care.
A deaf, elderly man was sitting on a chair when initiates went to visit
him. He said, "I am just waiting to die.?His lonely words were so
touching and full of grief. After initiates expressed their intentions
with the sign language they just made up, the elderly man was in tears.
A few days later, they brought the supplies to him. He started crying.
He bowed to salute the initiates and accepted the gifts. He held Master's
sample booklet in his hands and each time he read "Ching Hai",
he would bow in tears. All the initiates there were also in tears.
Without resentment or regret, an optimistic elderly woman was taking care
of her invalid son, who was injured in an auto accident. She had believed
in the Quan Yin Bodhisattva all her life. Her faith was so touching. Several
times she had seen the Quan Yin Bodhisattva walk out of the statue and
shine light upon her to comfort her. When she saw the initiates, she was
very touched and said, "Your Master must be a Buddha, the Quan Yin
Bodhisattva must have sent you here." Fellow initiates travelled over
mountains and hills to some remote groups of people and carried gifts and
news magazines to bring Master's saintly love and teachings to those people.
Master had arranged this activity so that those withering souls could have
the opportunity to receive the grace of an enlightened Master.
The participating initiates all realized that physical health is ever changing.
They felt that they should "appreciate and treasure happiness while
it lasted". One initiate said that before initiation, he just worked
every day to make a living and never thought about those suffering friends.
It was Master's doing that the essence of his life had broadened. The young
initiated children that accompanied them also learned a valuable lesson
in loving others.
Besides material assistance, sharing Master's love and blessings and cheering
people's spirit were the most joyful things. When we saw those sullen faces
brightened and become full of hope after the visit, the initiates knew
that Master's love had entered their hearts and souls!
Report From Taipei . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Families Came Together To The Group Meditation
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the Center in Taipei held its group
meditation as usual, to welcome the New Year with a reminder to practice
diligently and not to forget their noble ideals. After meditation there
was a party for families and friends of the initiates to enjoy. On that
day the meditation center was beautifully decorated and lots of blessed
fruit and food were prepared.
Celebrating The New Year At Home With Buddha
On New Year's Day, many of Master's beautiful new photographs and joyful
new video tapes were made available. Many initiates happily purchased them
to enjoy with their families at home during the New Year holidays. This
way, they not only took care of their family members, but it was also as
if they were spending the New Year with Master. Fellow initiates were thankful
to Master for taking care of them so well.
Report From Hong Kong . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
New Year Presents For The Refugees
During the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Hong Kong fellow practitioners launched
an activity of giving each Au Lac refugee a New Year's present. Everyone
happily went on their way donating, purchasing, coordinating, and so on.
Unfortunately, after contacting the local officials, they found that, of
the tens of thousands of refugees in Hong Kong, they would only be allowed
by Hong Kong authority to give the presents to the several thousand at
the Man Yee and Kai Tak camps, and a time limit was set for delivery.
Fellow practitioners purchased seasonal items as presents. After having
a group meditation, they started wrapping and packing the presents. Everyone
was together under one roof working cooperatively with high spirits until
early the next morning. The next day, several tons of presents were loaded
onto trucks, all prepared to be delivered to the camps. The compassionate
Master seemed to know that what the Hong Kong initiates had done was not
enough. She sent US$20,000 to them and phoned all the way from Miaoli to
instruct them to buy more gifts for the refugees. Everyone was very grateful
for the love and consideration that Master showed to the refugees and fellow
initiates in Hong Kong. As a result, with Master's blessing and an even
higher morale, they continued to work through the night, eventually finishing
so that the presents could be delivered on time. Fellow practitioners were
moved by all the grace from Master and the guidance and correction given
by Her at critical moments. Fellow initiates in Singapore, Thailand and
Philippines also conducted the loving activities of distributing gifts
to the refugee compatriots in their countries, in response to Master's
wish to share our love with the unfortunate brothers and sisters.
The New Master's Book Circulation Center
At the newly established Master's book circulation center in Mongkok, there
is an obvious increase in the circulation of Master's books and other items.
Apart from Sundays, when the major group meditation is held, the book center
is open evenings so that fellow initiates can meditate. Many new friends
come there to inquire about Master's teachings and watch Her video tapes.
It is also a place where the Quan Yin messenger holds group meditation
for those who practice the Convenient Method.
Offering Merit
At present, the world is deeply concerned about the earthquake in Kobe,
Japan. Before giving material aid to Japan, the Hong Kong initiates held
a one-week group meditation at the Mongkok branch Center. They offered
the merits from their meditation to alleviate the suffering and lessen
the destructive negative forces of the quake. Many fellow initiates attended
enthusiastically. They prayed silently and sent their best wishes to that
distant place.
Coming Together, Seasonal Greetings To Everyone
On the third day of the new year, a dinner party, in which greetings of
well wishes were offered to everyone. More than a hundred fellow initiates,
their friends and relatives and would-be-initiates who are practicing the
Convenient Method gathered to celebrate the New Year. They also wished
the working staff who went to Japan to provide disaster relief success
in doing their job and a safe and sound new year!

Aiding The Victims In Kansai
At day break one morning in mid January, an earthquake of 7.2 on the Richter
scale hit Kobe, Japan - a beautifully scenic and prosperous seaport city,
the transportation center of Japan. The day before the quake, suddenly,
the dolphins in the Kobe aquarium began to behaved strangely - disobeying
orders and leaping about restlessly. The birds in a certain area of Osaka,
known as the gathering place of thousands of wild birds for many years,
suddenly disappeared. These creatures anticipated that the earthquake would
come the next day. They escaped this catastrophe in time, but not the human
beings who were technologically equipped, and highly alerted to the earthquake.
The Tokyo Center immediately received Master's words of consolation about
the disaster, and Her instructions to start the relief work. The fellow
practitioners wasted no time in forming a rescue team and went to help
the victims in the affected area. Realizing the local fellow practitioners
were lacking both in manpower and experience, Master summoned dozens of
relief workers from Formosa, consisting of doctors, nurses and trained
first-aid worker. (Mostly are residents from Hsihu.) Upon arriving in Tokyo,
the relief team gathered tons of various relief materials in only one day.
They split into many groups operating in the disaster area. Day and night
racing with time, they worked hard in the shortest time rendering the most
efficient relieving and lifesaving help. Later, other relief materials
including tents, sleeping bags, 'no water needed' shampoo and warm clothing
were airlifted from Formosa and distributed to the victims in large quantities.
In a few seconds, a disaster inflicted by nature took away innumerable
lives, and destroyed a great part of the standing structures. This truly
shows that the world is ephemeral and illusion; all things being only dreams.
The only eternal refuge for human beings is their search for the inner
realization and wakening, and the immortality of their souls and spirituality.
Besides offering material aid and spiritual support to the victims, fellow
practitioners everywhere were also silently praying for the victims. It
is their hope that through meditation, the gentle atmosphere of the world
would be sublimated, thus eliminating further catastrophes.

Visit To The UNHCR
With the support of a few non-initiates, fellow initiates from Germany
and Netherlands met together in Bonn, where the UNHCR in Germany has its
office, to have a sit-in and a discussion. All the fellow initiates came
to the understanding that the most beneficial results would come if they
tried their best to remain concentrated for the whole event.
In the friendly company of a few policemen, fellow initiates then went
to the UNHCR office, and held up big protest slogans for everyone to see.
The few hour peaceful sit-in took place opposite the front of the UNHCR
office. After being nourished for a while, by the blessing from the sit-in,
they went to the office to give them the petitions and other important
information. The UNHCR press agent cordially invited them for a discussion.
They had quite an interesting exchange of different points of view concerning
the refugee problem. The atmosphere was very constructive, obviously due
to Master's blessing.
Wet Blessings From Heaven
Due To A Peaceful Sit-in
On the second day, the group held a sit-in in the city of Bonn, even though
it was raining the whole time. The attention of a lot of passersby was
also attracted by information-boards with photos of the refugees in Hong
Kong and the most important facts. This helped people to quickly understand
the situation of the refugees, making it easier to get their signatures.
The eye-catching effect of a group of people silently praying and meditating
was highlighted by the fact, that they were very determined in their sit-in
unmoved by the rain, for a lofty ideal. People showed their support in
action. One young man was so touched that he shouted, "They are indeed
meditating!? as if he was reminded of something long forgotten. He also
eagerly asked for information about meditation and happily received a sample
booklet.
Through their activities, fellow practitioners showed the people with affinity
that, in all this running around in life and with all these outer things,
one must get in contact with a higher ideal and with inner peace in order
to find true happiness.
After hours of sitting, nearly everyone was totally soaked. But as they
left, they were laughing happily, as if they had been sitting in the sunshine.
This reminded people of one of Master's sayings, "Whenever it rains,
remember Me. The rain is like a blessing from heaven. The rain is like
the connection message from heaven to earth.

Everyone Joins In To Spread The Teachings
In order for even more people in the U.K. who have affinity with Master
to come to know Her and the Quan Yin Method, the Oxford branch Center prepared
a large quantity of leaflets and asked fellow practitioners to post them
on the public notice boards in the libraries and grocery stores, or on
the windows of supermarkets in the communities near their homes. As fellow
practitioners are quite widely spread, soon after this activity, the branch
Center received a great and enthusiastic response, concerning the Quan
Yin Method and asking for news about Master.
While doing this activity, fellow practitioners learnt many lessons on
"giving from the heart, without fear". They learnt to overcome
their inner hindrances and face their ego, which was indeed an extra benefit
in their spiritual practice. Moreover, a very good result was achieved
in spreading the teachings; in this way the fellow practitioners were greatly
encouraged.

Chinese New Year Reunion
Immediately after several weeks of continuous snowfall in Geneva, it started
to rain. As the weather got warmer, the holiday atmosphere became even
stronger. Brother Chang invited the local fellow practitioners and their
family members for an early celebration of the Chinese New Year at his
new residence.
Everyone made dumplings together; some fellow practitioners prepared excellent
dishes, which they were experts at making. Within a few moments, the table
was filled with dishes of delicious vegetarian food, which were highlighted
by their outstanding color, smell and taste. The host, being a bachelor,
was overwhelmed with admiration.
After finishing the meal and drinking tea, some people proposed that they
sing songs to liven things up. French love songs, Swiss mountain songs,
Chinese and American folk songs, and Au Lac songs that Master has sung
come forth one after another, creating a very warm atmosphere that brought
people together. After the party, fellow practitioners discussed spiritual
practice and knowledge. They also discussed Master's teachings from a scientific
perspective. Several of the practitioners, without prior consultation with
each other, said that they felt that Master was there and had sung with
them. Even though these comments were surprising, they added a greater
touch of warmth to the festivities.

The Divine Message Spreads Over Budapest
The Budapest Center has translated the latest sample booklet from English
into Hungarian. Before the Christmas season, the Quan Yin messenger and
fellow practitioners who worked in eastern Europe brought this unexpected
special gift to the kindhearted Hungarians, who live in this small distant
land. The sample booklets were displayed and distributed in universities,
bookstores, libraries and shopping stores.
The response was encouraging from the first day. One Hungarian phoned for
more sample booklets for those who he knew wanted to learn meditation.
After he came to the Center and talked with the Quan Yin messenger, he
decided to follow a vegetarian diet and applied for initiation. Because
of the continuous distribution of the sample booklets, almost every day
the Center received phone calls from spiritual seekers of all different
walks of life. The seeds of the Quan Yin Method have been planted in this
snow-covered land. When the spring breeze blows over this land and gives
life to it, the people here will then be in their full glory, graced by
Master's divine love.

A Joyous And Diligent 3-Day New Year Retreat In America
Ever since Master came to help fellow initiates restore and clean up the
Austin Center, the Center has been filled with Master's blessing power.
It was easy to enter samadhi when one sat and meditated. After Master left,
fellow initiates followed Master's attitude and spirit of working, and
continued with the construction of a kitchen, a tool room, a new meditation
hall, etc. At the same time, they also built a parking lot and all the
small paths and main roads connecting everything. As a result, the center
became brand new. After all the preparation work had been done, fellow
initiates sought Master's permission to organize a 3-Day New Year Retreat,
to which Master kindly consented.
Fellow initiates from dozens of cities all over America arrived at the
center early to help tidy it up. Everyone worked joyfully with all their
might and means. During the 3-day retreat, in an orderly manner, everyone
gracefully savored the joy of their practice. Although Master did not personally
conduct the retreat, fellow initiates understood that as long as they are
sincere and practice meditation diligently, Master's blessing is omnipresent.
The response from the 3-day retreat was very good. Many initiates had abundant
experiences and their hearts were filled with tremendous peacefulness and
satisfaction. Other than meditating diligently, fellow initiates also sincerely
wished Master good health and prayed for world peace in the forthcoming
new year. Fellow initiates hoped that with Master's loving blessing, every
nation and every person would become more loving so that the world would
be elevated to a higher level.
On New Year's Day, there was a delightful party around the campfire. Fellow
initiates sat around the blazing fire exchanging experiences of their practice,
enjoying a vegetarian barbecue, and watching the programs performed by
initiates from various states. Accompanied by the music of Master's songs,
everyone danced and sang together in joy and harmony.
The 3-day retreat was over all too quickly. Fellow initiates brought home
with them their abundant spiritual harvests. They hoped to have other retreats
on future holidays, to decorate their inner mansions and to beautify the
external environment of the Center with a state of elegance and tranquility.
As per last year, fellow practitioners in Houston distributed woolen blankets
to the homeless throughout the city on Christmas Eve, sharing with them
Master's warmth and love.

A Loving Atmosphere Encompasses All Humanity
Practicing Master's teaching of brotherly love, just before Christmas,
fellow practitioners from southern California distributed essential items
to the homeless in downtown L.A. Earlier, they had visited certain needy
neighborhoods to inquire about what was needed by the homeless. After their
inquiries were completed, fellow practitioners bought blankets, clothing,
dry food and tents, according to their request.
Several hundred homeless people lined up on the sidewalk to receive Master's
loving gifts. The fellow practitioners and the homeless people interacted
in a loving, friendly and warm caring atmosphere. After the distribution
of goods, a friendly stranger, who had warmheartedly helped to maintain
order during the event, lifted a box of leftover sample booklets onto his
shoulder with a big smile and carried it to another area where a great
number of people were gathered. This unexpected gesture of friendship made
the fellow practitioners feel that there was a feeling of love that permeated
all of humanity. They also felt that after this event, the people who have
a strong affinity will see each other again.
Furthermore, the Los Angeles Center is broadcasting Master's teachings
on Au Lac Radio (FM 96.7) from seven to eight o'clock every Saturday evening.
The broadcasting area covers Orange County and southern California. The
program content consists of news about the activities of the Meditation
Associations, Master's lectures in Au Lac language, Master's songs and
correspondences between Master and disciples. Everyone is welcome to tune-in.

Happiness In Finding A Spiritual Guide
A local African pastor came to the Center inquiring about Master and the
Quan Yin Method. He told the contact person sincerely that he would follow
any master as long as the master could lead him closer to God. When he
learned that to practice the Quan Yin Method he must be a vegetarian for
life, he was a bit hesitant because of his cultural background in using
animal fats.
However, several days later in a phone call to the contact person, the
pastor said that to his surprise, his family and friends all encouraged
him to become a vegetarian. It seemed like Master had been blessing him
in a mysterious way. After being a vegetarian for a period of time, he
requested initiation. At present, this friend, the pastor, is excitedly
awaiting Master's transmission of the "Dharma", the initiation.

Encountering The True Dhama In A Foreign Land;
The Traveller Seeking Refuge In Master
Ottawa and Kingston's fellow practitioners collaborated again to distribute
Master's sample booklets. It was a cold winter, but on the day the booklets
were to be distributed, it was very nice. Initiates distributed Master's
sample booklets at the vegetarian restaurants, health food stores, doctor's
offices, grocery and video stores. The recipients were surprised that these
nice books were free. Fellow initiates also went to the Hari Krishna Vegetarian
Restaurant. The owner happily told them that the day before they came,
for the second time in his life, he saw his master come to bless him. He
was very open and allowed fellow initiates to display Master's sample booklets.
After the booklet distribution, there were a number of people who called
to enthusiastically express their deep inner feelings and request more
information about Master and the Quan Yin Method. The most touching is
the story of a Zairian who had migrated with his family to Canada years
ago. Although he had been practicing another method of meditation, he was
never spiritually satisfied. All these years he kept searching for the
true path. By chance, one day his wife brought home a copy of Master's
sample booklet and delightfully exclaimed, "A female can also become
an enlightened Master! When he read the transcript of Master's lecture
given at the United Nations - "the Mystery of the World Beyond",
he realized that it was not something beyond reached. With total concentration,
he immersed himself in Master's sample booklet until early the next morning.
He then wasted no time calling fellow practitioners, asking to purchase
all of Master's books in English. He announced that he had finally realized
his life long dream of getting spiritual guidance!
Several days later, he declared to our fellow practitioners that he had
no intention of wasting time and his precious human body anymore, so he
firmly decided to receive the initiation. He even referred to Master's
books and said, "If Master is not a fully enlightened being, She could
not have possibly elaborated so distinctly and concisely on the higher
level worlds. In such a short period, he realized that he was experiencing
a drastic change which was hard to describe. It was also his wish to spread
Master's teachings to the staff and students in the school where he was
teaching, and even to those in his home country.

Letters Between Master And Disciples
The Supreme Guide
By Initiate Pham, LA, USA (Originally In English)
Dear Lord,
If I have to search for fond memories of you and for inner wonders, my
favorite would probably be the one experienced at the time of initiation.
I remember how I could not make up my mind whether I should commit myself
to become a life-time practitioner, since there were many difficulties
in my family at that time. At the very last moment, when the door of the
auditorium was almost shut and while everyone else was quietly seated,
I was guided to the edge of the very first row, on the men's side. There
I was, all alone in an empty row, overwhelmed with mixed feelings; I could
have been an honored guest, and on the other hand, I was probably the most
hideous sinner about to receive her sentence.
Nervously, I prayed nonstop for Your forgiveness of my sins, for the Truth
that I was about to realize, and most of all, if I could just touch the
hem of your gown. Then and only then, would all my dreams be fulfilled.
You entered, and I knew I had not made the wrong decision in coming. As
the initiation session progressed, with our eyes closed, we concentrated
diligently. Suddenly, I felt the hem of Your gown touching me. My soul
rejoiced! My wish came true!
Looking back at the short span of my spiritual practice, there were times
when I could smell the fragrance of Your flowers during meditation. There
were times when I could hear the sweet inner music, so loud that I could
drown myself in it. Such bliss that only I will know, and so eager to share
what I have known with my neighbors, but no one seemed to have the desire
to listen, to believe, or to receive the precious gift of my Lord.
And I will never forget the time You immediately held me in Your arms as
I approached You one Christmas, and You tenderly smiled as if You already
knew all the troubles I was going through and that all of my sins did not
matter and that they were all unconditionally forgiven.
My sweet Lord, I left You and came back, all the while committing unimaginable
levels of violations of Your given precepts, and yet You brewed the wine
from Your own hands to welcome me back at Your gate. (Is there any more
gross injustice under the sky, I wonder?) And though I often wish to be
Your instrument of peace, I feel ashamed that over and over again, I am
quite the opposite of what I preach and thereby greatly dishonor your Name.
Beautiful Lord, benevolent Mother and Goddess of Mercy, Christmas is here
again. Please help deliver me from the evils and please help me in this
mission to beautify our planet Earth.
Merry Christmas to You, Lord. Thank You for Your showers of blessings.
Amen.
Between Master And Disciple
Opening Of My Heart
By Fellow Initiate Wu, Taipei, Formosa
The international three-day retreat was topped with Master's blessing.
Leaving Hsihu Center with a grateful heart and tons of experiences, I felt
so happy that my eyes were filled with tears. I wondered how I could ever
repay Master for Her grace.
For the last decade, I raised my children by myself and I had to undergo
all kinds of hardships. Outwardly I looked strong and tough, but inside
I was often tortured by pain, loneliness and helplessness. I complained
to heaven about its unfair treatment of me. I resented the fact that I
had married a bad husband. My unbalanced inner state eventually affected
my personality. Loneliness was always hidden beneath my lively and happy
appearance. I didn't like to be close to others. I locked myself tightly
in an ivory tower.
This continued until one day I happened to see one of Master's sample booklets.
As I flipped casually through this booklet, I became completely absorbed
in it. I took it home and read it carefully. My soul was touched by every
one of Master's words. When I closed the book and looked at Master's picture,
I could not help but recite Her name "Namo Ching Hai Wu Shang Shih".
The moment I recited it, a miracle happened: In front of my eyes, Master's
picture began to change to various appearances. I could feel the immense
magnetic field and the unbelievable power radiating from Master.
I was so eager to understand Master's teachings further that I immediately
purchased the books "The Key of Immediate Enlightenment". During
the time that I read Master's books, I felt very happy, excited and hopeful
every day. I had never experienced such feelings before.
Finally I received initiation from Master. The date printed on my ID card
symbolizes the date of my rebirth. Master cleansed my soul, opened my heart,
and made me become aware that all the frustrations that I had endured in
the past had been simply to cultivate my willpower to practice the Quan
Yin Method. Now I am filled with bliss. Thank You Master for the new life
You have bestowed upon me.

Caring For The World
Forests Are Pleading For Help
By Shu May
(Excerpt from "The Truth Monthly", No. 24)
Forests play a very important role in the ecology of the earth. However,
it is now facing a crisis in its existence due to the blind tree felling
by man over a long period of time.
Forests Are The Guardians Of The Earth
Forest are a source of wealth, because trees can be used to build houses
and make tools. However, this is a backward concept. The fact is that forests
are not only a economic resource, but their greatest value lies in protecting
the ecology.
One hectare of forest can absorb twenty-five tons of carbon dioxide and
releases fifteen tons of fresh oxygen each year. Therefore, one may say
that forests are a natural oxygen producer. Not only does it clean the
air, but its lush branches and leaves also absorb sound, polluted air and
dust. The evaporation of water by the leaves regulates the air temperature.
The roots of trees protect and nourish the underground water, and prevent
soil erosion by mountain waters or rain. How could we be so imprudent to
harm such an important and wonderful resource?
The Nightmare Of Losing The Forests
Forests are a good breeding ground for wild life, plants and insects. However,
in Taiwan, severe damage has been done to forests over the past four decades,
which has caused various species to quickly become extinct from nature.
Furthermore, irrational felling of trees in forests leads to loss of soil
and water, and jeopardizes the stability of the ecology. It also increase
the density of carbon dioxide, and as a result, pollutes the air.
Lacking the protection of the forests, the soil is attacked by heavy rains
and parched by the hot sun. It becomes unsuitable for vegetation. The deteriorated
quality of air directly affects man's health. Therefore, should forests
disappear, it might be very difficult for man to continue to survive.
The Healthy Forest Bath
In recent years, forest baths have become the most popular holiday recreation.
People relax in the green forest, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the freshness
of nature. It releases the tension and tiredness from the cities, and it
is very helpful to our body.
In everyday life, wood is an essential material for making paper, furniture
or interior design. Therefore, we must plant more trees, strategically,
as we fell them. Only in this way can we save the forests, and ourselves.
Master Says
Master's New Year Wishes
By the Supreme Master Ching Hai, Hsihu center, Formosa Jan 29, 1995 (Originally
in Chinese)
Many people misunderstand the meaning of the New Year and other festivals.
On every grand occasion or New Year, we should spend more effort to reflect
and introspect on ourselves, how we can serve the world better, contribute
more to our relatives and friends or the country. The occasion is not to
be used every time as an excuse for making merry, instead we should refine
our coarse behaviour and speech. Of course, everyone is aware of this.
I just take this opportunity to remind you. You don't have to listen if
you have done so. If you have not done this, or have forgotten to do so,
then you ought to be reminded!
Develop An Elegant Demeanor
I have said everything before. The important thing is that you have to
put the teachings into action, then it will be fine! Of course, we should
progress in the new year. Instead of getting "older" every year,
we should be "stronger" spiritually and wiser. Then, we deserve
to be called "elder", the older the better. For instance, if
we did something last year that we or others disliked, then we ought to
rectify it in the new year with our best effort! Improve our behaviour
and speech, becoming more beautiful.
In real life, it is hard to avoid having some moments when we overreact,
but do not let this quality cling to us in ordinary times. Do you understand?
Of course, it is different when you have to react. For instance, just now
you are angry with that person because he made you mad. Or, there are times
when we cannot suppress our temper. At those times other people can forgive
you. Aware of our wrong behaviour later, we should apologize or improve
ourselves, then we may be forgiven.
However, we must not let this quality develop to the extent that we are
using it even at normal times. This is different from speaking harshly
when we are angry. We can find out later. Anyway, this is provoked by the
situation, and is different from having a rude personality. It is totally
another thing if we are rude even when joking or chatting with people,
and irritating them. That is our bad quality. If we observe such a quality
in ourselves, improve it and do not let people feel uncomfortable each
time they think of us. The bad memory will jump into their mind each time
they think of our name. Subsequently, we undermine our friendships, the
atmosphere at home and our essential business.
The Master is not telling you to speak in a flattering manner wherever
you go, for instance, praising others with words not from your heart, or
just doing it to win others' feelings or to delight them, when we are thinking
the other way at heart. We should speak according to our heart. The oneness
of outer actions and inner thoughts is "Zen". Otherwise, we are
hypocrites. It is true that we should behave naturally, but politeness
and nobleness are also essential. Observing our refined behaviour, even
the people with no elegance would feel ashamed of their attitude. A New
Person In The New Year
The New Year gives us a chance to become a new person. If we did well last
year, we should be even better in the new year. If not, then we improve
in the new year, the more the better.
Many people misunderstand the meaning of the New Year and other festivals.
On every grand occasion or New Year, we should spend more effort to reflect
and introspect on ourselves, how we can serve the world better, contribute
more to our relatives and friends or the country. The occasion is not to
be used every time as an excuse for making merry, instead we should be
refining our coarse behaviour and speech, right? Of course, everyone is
aware of this. I just take this opportunity to remind you. You don't have
to listen if you have done this. If you have not done this, or have forgotten
to do so, then you ought to be reminded!
We have to set a good example for the world in every aspect, including
the relief missions, spiritual practice, handling friendships and the relationship
between Master and disciples. Only when absolutely necessary, then we use
stern methods. Is it not better if we can treat each other in a refined
and noble manner? The creation of heaven should start from here!
People in high positions in particular, should care more about their qualities.
As an official, one should be honest and upright. A government servant
must work diligently for the nation, sacrifice for the well-being of her
people. Spiritual practitioners or the liaison persons for Master, etc.,
should also mind the manner and quality in their acts and speech, sacrifice
for others instead of enjoying personal comfort. Parents, they should take
care of their children of course, make them comfortable, but not spoil
them badly. Children, naturally they should be filial and obedient to their
parents and elders.
The teachers should fulfil their responsibilities, provide moral and ethical
lessons for the students. The basic A, B, C lessons, that everyone can
teach, are not enough. The greatest responsibility of a teacher is to teach
the children about ethics, the superior qualities. This also applies to
the parents. Just feeding and dressing the children are not enough. If
everyone fulfills their responsibilities - the parents protect their children
well, the children are filial - the world would be in great peace, beginning
with the family. Then, all the natural disasters and war calamities would
diminish.
Leading A Nation To Stability
Wars and natural disaster are not always caused by geographical complications,
but generated from the atmosphere of the world. When human beings treat
each other unjustly and with hostility, an irritating and vicious warlike
ambience is generated, and from this many disasters and wars are created.
Of recent, more disasters have been happening on earth. This is a reminder
from God that we should go back to our original qualities of truth, virtue
and beauty, instead of being intoxicated in negativity. We humans have
two kinds of power, one is positive, the other negative. The positive one
gives us and others comfort and bliss. This is the quality we should always
maintain and develop further. If we were to be stuck in the negative sphere,
the world would become more and more chaotic.
Suppose the whole nation becomes vegetarian. Because of the gentle atmosphere,
due to no killing karma, naturally, there would be no disasters, and life
would be comfortable and healthy, the country would be rich and strong.
Being physically healthy, our mental would also be full of energy. Many
wise ideas would emerge benefiting the country and the people. If this
is the case with all countries, the world would be peaceful. There is virtually
no need for all the conferences that consume so much champagne and steak,
without rendering much peace to the world. Perhaps, there is peace today,
but not tomorrow. Peace is restored here, but war breaks out in another
country the next day. Therefore, the world is not to be managed by empty
talks. Instead, each person should put into practice the lessons they have
learnt.
Until now, Singapore is the only government I know that advocates vegetarianism
to her people. Of course, it is rare to find such a government that treats
a problem from the root and not the fruit. Perhaps there are other governments
advocating the same, but I am not aware. Singapore seems to be the only
government being so clever to care about the ethics and health of her people.
I hope other governments will follow their example.
Everyone Is Our Teacher
We say that with the guidance of a virtuous and enlightened friend, our
life will improve and become more noble. Our fellow practitioners can be
that virtuous and enlightened friend, a very good friend. Even the non-initiated
people outside can be our teachers sometimes, reminding us of some beautiful
things. For instance, observing them doing good deeds or speaking some
good things, our heart will become more open. Even if we saw them doing
bad deeds, at least we can learn a lesson and refrain from doing the same!
That was why the ancient sages said, "In the company of three people,
there will be one who can be my teacher." I would say all three of
them are our teachers. Each person living in this world has their particular
obligation and mission. If we are close or related to a certain person,
definitely he has a mission concerning us. It might be good or bad, but
he is responsible for giving us a lesson. So, please keep your eyes and
ears open, detect what God is trying to teach us through that person close
to us. However, we should use what we have learnt, and not keep reciting
it like a parrot or a tape recorder, which is useless of course.
Recently, I have often asked you to help do, or organize disaster relief
work. Of course, we are trying to help them because of our compassion,
and our uneasiness when seeing others in a suffering condition. However,
we are not doing it only for the victims. Participating in the relief work,
we are also helping to develop our own compassion, fulfil our obligation,
and learn how to respond to a situation.
Distributing the rice is not all there is. In the affected area, you will
come across people whose emotions, feelings and urgent living needs are
similar to yours. You might have to face the problems they are facing also.
After talking to them, you can find out more about the inner needs of the
individual. Then, you are tested on how you react and how you comfort them,
counsel them, help them overcome the problems in their life. That is your
lesson to learn. Without putting it into practice, it is useless listening
to my words for years, because you have not experienced it in benefiting
others.
Okay, I have said that much, so I won't say any more. I wish everyone a
happy and successful new year, achieving early enlightenment and liberation.
Master's Wonders
The Happy Heavenly Angel
By the news group in Tainan, Formosa
Before her initiation, sister Jeng was a sincere practitioner of the I-Guan-Tao
path, where she held the position of power transmitter. She devoted herself
wholeheartedly to spiritual practice. Besides her work, she always quietly
studied the sutras at home. Since her initiation, she fully realizes that
Master is the true living master. Hence, she decided to give up her years
of her old way of religious practice and her position as the power transmitter.
She now follows Master's instructions and practices the Quan Yin Method
diligently. Whenever Master lectures abroad, she follows Her to various
places in the world to help with the work of spreading the Truth.
Last year, due to illness, sister Jeng passed away. Before she died, she
said good-bye in a carefree and relaxed manner to the sister initiate who
was taking care of her. That evening happened to be the group meditation
in Tainan. During the meditation, some of the fellow initiates had a vision
of sister Jeng coming to the meditation hall to wave good-bye to everyone.
Actually, about half a year ago, Master manifested to her during her meditation
to inform her of her date of departure from this world. But when she told
a sister initiate, the sister could not believe her, and said it must be
her own imagination because she was still so young and healthy.
Sister Jeng and her elder sister were very close to each other. It was
a terrible blow to her sister that she passed away so young. Her sister
agonized over her death and wished to see and talk to her again. So the
elder sister went to see a medium who acted as a channel to the dead, to
the spirit of her beloved sister. That day, after all the clients had contacted
the spirits they wanted, sister Jeng's spirit never came. The medium was
unable to establish a channel with her, and he was quite puzzled. After
so many years of channelling work, this was the first time he failed to
summon the designated spirit. He could not figure out why.
Sister Jeng's elder sister went home frustrated, wondering why after all
the years of spiritual practice, her sister's spirit was lost somewhere
and could not be found. That night, sister Jeng dressed in white, and with
brilliant light, appeared in her dream. She was accompanied by the Quan
Yin Bodhisattva (Avalokiteshvara). Sister Jeng told her sister that she
was fine, busy as usual with her work in helping to spread the Truth, and
that she was not to be disturbed by any medium again! She told her elder
sister to practice the Quan Yin Method in order to be truly liberated from
the Three Realms, the circle of birth and death. After this dream, sister
Jeng's family understood that after the Quan Yin practitioners die, their
souls were liberated into the higher realms beyond the power of any medium
to summon!
Sister Jeng's body was cremated. Afterward, the person responsible for
the cremation was amazed in finding that the bones came out clean and flawless,
and appeared translucent and pink in color. Also, there was a piece of
bone between the skull and the spine that resembled a meditating Buddha.
The owner of the crematory said that this phenomenon usually occurs prior
to becoming a holy relics. Over the years, he had performed countless cremations,
and only in three people had such a phenomenon occurred. The first two
were high level monks; yet this time, he wondered how an ordinary lay person,
with family responsibilities of a husband and children, could achieve such
a high level?
Sister Jeng's husband is also an initiate. Shortly after his wife passed
away, he received a phone call for her from a spiritual friend from the
previous path that she followed; he had not been in touch with her for
a long time. He said that several of their spiritual friends all had the
same dream on the same night, that sister Jeng, dressed in white, with
brilliant light beams around her, came to see them accompanied by the Quan
Yin Bodhisattva. She told them to follow the Supreme Master Ching Hai and
practice the Quan Yin Method. Those spiritual friends felt that this was
something unusual, so they called sister Jeng for clarification. The husband
told them that she had already passed away, and they understood right away.
The husband realized that now is the right time, that his wife wished to
work through him to help the spiritual friends of her former path of practice,
to practice the True Dharma. Therefore, he invited everyone to get together
and brought along Master's books to explain Her teachings to them.
Sister Jeng was such a sincere supporter of the Truth that even after she
had passed away, she was still working for Master as the best guardian
angel.
Another Episode On How Beautiful
Attire Can Save Sentient Beings
By Resident Disciple Lan, Hsihu, Formosa
The cleaning of Master's clothing and ornaments has always been part of
the work of Her close attendant. But once before the new year, contrary
to the usual practice, Master reiterated zealously that the dresses had
to be dry cleaned at a dry cleaner.
The attendant dared not waste time, and went quickly to a nearby dry cleaner.
Coincidentally, the shop owner was busy and unwilling to accept the dry
cleaning, so it was taken to a more distant dry cleaning shop in the next
county. Our center is located in a remote hill area of a town. Quiet and
peaceful it definitely is, but with urgent matters at hand, one regrets
that there is no U.F.O. or airplane available there to carry out Master's
orders quickly.
Even though it was the first time we had met, the owner of this dry cleaning
shop was warm and friendly. She was willing to provide the quickest and
best quality service. She noticed that those bringing the dresses respected
and treasured them very much, so she casually asked whether there was any
special reason why they were being so respectful. After learning that they
were disciples of the Supreme Master Ching Hai, she said excitedly that
she had watched Master's lectures often on channel 4 T.V.. She often felt
curious about how a dainty little lady could have so much great power to
be able to totally convince so many people.
So the attendant and fellow initiate happily talked with her about Master
and Her teachings. She not only listened with joy, but replied repeatedly,
"That's right. That's logical!" A man standing nearby listened
to the whole conversation. He did not leave or utter a word, but nodded
repeatedly in agreement. He was a most supportive co-listener. The attendant
felt sorry that there was not a sample booklet or magazine in the car that
they could give to them as a gift. Suddenly, a thought flashed into their
minds: Why not invite them to visit the Center on the New Year's Day so
that they could see Master personally?
The dry cleaning shop owner, who was very eager for the Truth, actually
came to visit the Center on New Year's Day together with her husband! Saving
sentient beings through beautiful attire is Master's marvelous way of playing
with the wheel of dharma. The dry cleaning shop owner in the story made
an affinity by cleaning an enlightened Master's beautiful dresses. Isn't
that another one of Master's wonderful arrangements?
Affinity Through Shoes
By Initiate Hwang, Taipei, Formosa
An initiate-to-be in Japan has been missing Master a great deal ever since
she came to know about Her. A short while ago during Christmas, she went
to Formosa to visit her relatives. On the way she went to the Taipei Center
to purchase some books, and her shoes got mixed up with someone else's.
The day before she was to return to Japan, she went back to the Center
to exchange her shoes. It so happened that Master was to return to Formosa
that day. The Center was busy contacting initiates so that they could go
to the airport to welcome Master. The Japanese initiate-to-be was very
happy. She had been praying for a chance to see Master in person. Her wish
had been granted and her joy could not be described in words. (Master does
not always allow people to see Her off or welcome Her at the airport, in
fact it's only once in a while compared to Her constant and quiet - travels
between countries and places.)
In the crowded airport, Master appeared in a traditional Japanese dress,
with which she is so familiar. The initiate-to-be was so touched that tears
rolled down her cheeks!
The Omnipotent Buddha And Her Infinite Love
By Initiate Shih, Taoyuan, Formosa
A few years ago my younger brother was initiated by Master. After that,
I became his immediate target to persuade. As a follower of the Emperor
Huang Ti religion for years, I was not at all interested in what he was
saying and frowned upon vegetarianism. The elders in my family used to
go to the temple and bow down to any deity but believed in none of them.
My brother was afraid to arouse the contempt of my family due to ignorance,
so he never placed anything related to Master in our house. He just introduced
Master verbally. (So what She looks like was unknown.)
During the time my brother was diligently introducing us to Master's teachings,
one night in a dream, I saw a statue of Buddha, exactly like the Buddha
statue worshiped in a nearby countryside temple. (This temple was often
visited by my family members on Sunday outings.) Suddenly the Buddha's
head disappeared. While I was in awe, I saw a slim nun wearing monastic
robes enter the statue, then the Buddha's head returned!
On one Sunday, urged by my brother, I went to Hsihu Center, Miaoli. There,
I did not see any golden, brilliant or grandiose temple building; just
cleanly trimmed bamboo trees everywhere, the sound of running water and
small pavilions situated here and there - a natural, simple place that
made me feel like I was beyond this world. Master arrived gracefully. With
infinite compassion and fearless confidence, She opened our inner wisdom.
My emotions deeply touched at that time, were indescribable. The nun I
saw in my dream was Master Ching Hai!
In early autumn that year, I was initiated. Since then, I believe that
I can swim against the waves in the rough sea of life, because the tranquil
and pure ocean is eternally illuminating my heart.
Master's Words
On The Alert Once Again
Excerpt From The Lecture In Japan By The Supreme Master Ching Hai September
8, 1994
The Crisis On Earth
The several years between 1994 to 1996 or 1997 are the most sensitive period
of our Earth. Therefore, many incidents have happened. In the last few
centuries, we have done so much harm to our planet. Sometimes, the actions
looked like we were helping the world, or making the world progress, but
the price has been too high! We human beings are too ignorant. Just to
earn money quickly in our business, we have disregarded the future consequences.
So, now we better slow down and consider our situation, and that of our
next generation and the background of the world. We have destroyed too
much! For instance, we may cut down trees, but we should plant two trees
for every one we cut! We can retrieve used materials for recycling, that
is all right! We may also change our meat diet to a vegetarian one, because
meat eating has used up most of the resources on Earth.
Each year, many forests are destroyed just for raising livestock. To raise
the animals and provide beef for our consumption, forests and jungles equivalent
to the area of England are being felled each year. Raising cattle consumes
a lot of water, forage, time and land, and the land cannot be used again.
After the trees are felled and the earth trampled by the animals, you have
to wait fifty years to plant things again. Also, with the trees gone, the
exposed rich soils are washed away by the heavy rain, erosion is out of
control, and the land becomes barren and dry. There will be a chain reaction
of one thing affecting the other, and the destruction is not limited, but
has many aspects. Pure water sources are used for animals to drink and
take bathes, leaving only the filthy water for us, and in insufficient
quantity too.
We have abused technology and damaged the protective layer of the Earth's
atmosphere. This has also affected our planet, the Earth is getting hotter.
If it's hot then there is no rain, and no shading trees. Without rain,
trees cannot grow, without trees, there is less rain. Therefore, the climate
is becoming hotter and changing unpredictably. All these end up affecting
our body, affecting our children, our business, our mental state and other
aspects, and eventually affecting the moral state of our Earth. Without
sufficient food, prices would soar, many people could not afford it. Business
would be bad which would result in bankruptcy. People without money would
resort to robbing and do evil deeds, or become homeless. They might even
harm themselves and their families.
Everyone Is Responsible For Saving The Earth
We can change, change our world. We can save our world. We should rebuild
our way of life - live a moral life, be a vegetarian, cultivate ourself
mentally and physically and there will be immediate results. Our world
will be changed at once! If everyone plants trees instead of cutting them
down, then we would be saved very soon. Within ten years, the world would
not be the same, not have so much problem. Truly there is hope, but only
with the cooperation of everyone.
If a vegetarian diet can save the world, then everyone just has to sacrifice
a little. The political and religious figures have great influence and
authority over the people. They are free to use any means. They have television,
radio and everything. They can talk about anything at any time. They should
talk about good things, propagating a vegetarian diet and environmental
protection. This is the right thing to do for ourselves and our next generation.

From Doomsday" For the whole text please refer to News No.38.
Master Tells Stories
A Magical Chair
Spoken by the Supreme Master Ching Hai,
Hsihu Center, Formosa December 31, 1994
(Originally in English & Chinese)
Long ago there was an old man. He lived at the foot of the mountain and
was very poor. He had no possessions. His straw hut was his only property.
In fact, this person was very lazy so he deserved it! One day he heard
that in a certain place there lived a very powerful yogi who had the supernatural
power to create anything he desired. After hearing this, the very lazy
person, who did not want to work, wished to go there to ask the yogi to
use his supernatural power to create things for him so that he does not
have to work any more. After thinking in this way, he left.
He walked a very long way to the mountain cave where the yogi lived. When
he saw the yogi he prostrated. The yogi was quite nice, he politely entertained
him and asked him about his purpose. The lazy man said, "Respected
and beloved master, I am a very poor person. Besides a small straw house,
I have nothing else. Now I am very old and not able to work, so please,
compassionate master, please help me. Grant me some possessions to live
on. I know you have a lot of supernatural power. You can immediately create
anything you desire. I believe you are able to help me."
That yogi closed his eyes and sat there quietly without a word. Perhaps
he was too tired listening to all of this. This old man than continued
to ask him. After requesting for a long time, this yogi reluctantly gave
him a chair and said, "After you go home, anytime you think of something
you want, you can sit on this chair. But you have to wash you hands, face
and take a bath before sitting on the chair. Then think about anything
you desire. This way you will surely get it."
After thanking the yogi, the old man took the chair and immediately rushed
home! After reaching home, he did not waste a bit of time. He immediately
washed his hands, face, took a bath, then he sat on the chair right away.
At that time he was very hungry, so he immediately thought about food.
Then food immediately appeared. Oh! Very beautiful, very nice and a very
bountiful meal. So he enjoyed all the good food until he was very full.
After eating he felt tired and desired a bed to rest. Immediately a bed
with a thick mattress appeared. He lied down to sleep, but he could not
really rest, because in his heart, he was always thinking of wanting things
and money. He jumped up from the bed and sat on the chair. Now he started
to think about transforming his straw hut into a palace. As he was thinking
this, the straw hut immediately disappeared!
This old man's palace was very, very beautiful with jewels all over. The
doors were made of gold. The floors and the ceilings were made with gold,
even the pillars were of gold inlaid with very precious jewels. Thus he
was very happy and felt very comfortable. He continued to think, "Ah!
Such a big palace should not be without any servants." He just thought
and many servants appeared waiting for his commands. Later he thought,
"The servants, the palace can not be without money!" He thought
of a lot of gold, silver and money. Suddenly all these appeared together.
It made this old man very happy in deed. But he suddenly became worried.
He thought, "Ah! My palace is so beautiful, with so many possessions,
if it happened that an earthquake should come, what to do?" (Master
and all laugh.) He just finished the thought and the earthquake came. (Master
laughs.) His possessions and the palace were squashed into the earth.
What does this story tell us? Our mind has to be clean and pure first.
It is not good enough having supernatural power or power of practice. Therefore
we have to clean our body, speech and thought before having the power.
If we have the power but our body, speech and mind are not clean, precepts
are not kept properly, then we could do bad things. Our own power could
hurt ourselves. Sometimes this power could hurt others. Thus since ancient
times, those masters, before taking in any disciple, would test the disciple
for a long time until his body, speech and mind were completely clean before
giving him the power.
The Master often tells you not to practice supernatural power. The ordinary
people outside can practice the supernatural power easily. They do not
have to keep any precepts and do not have to be vegetarian. When we still
cannot control our mind, if we think about bad things they appear at once,
because at that time we get whatever we think. The power in the universe
is immense, but we should know how to use it. Otherwise, it can cause a
lot of harm, harming ourselves and damaging the world. Some disasters we
see in the world are sometimes not necessarily the karma of the people,
but due to some people who practice supernatural power. They practice towards
the bad direction or because of their messed-up thinking, they then mess
up the world. We can say that these people created trouble or were possessed
by the negative power. Really there are such people.
Thus when we practice we have to think about God everyday, think about
those fully charged names of the Buddhas to protect ourselves. Sometimes
it is not entirely our own karma that causes our obstructions, but sometimes
it is the negative, maya power around us that affect us. Therefore, we
have to always remember our goal, remember the power of the most high,
and recite the five Buddhas' names to protect ourselves. Thinking a lot
about God Almighty, our mind becomes clean and then we do not desire anything.
To us, at that time supernatural power would be of no use, because we would
be one with God and there would be nothing we could not have.
At that time, we would be very satisfied inside and we would know that
after we have left this illusive world, we would go back to our homeland
where we have everything. Compared to that place, this world is junk. Nothing
could be offered to us here. After our soul has returned many times to
the homeland to take a look, our mind would understand and would be very
stable. Then we would not want anything. Even if we want we would only
want those things that are good for others. Our heart would be very kind,
always thinking of positive things. Once thinking about positive things
then the positive things would come.
The Method Of The Big Boots
By the Supreme Master Ching Hai,
during the group meditation in Korea
(Originally in English)
April 15, 1994
In India, long time ago, there was a very, very nice and kind good King.
He loves his subject very much, and so he rules with the love and compassion
and consideration for his people. But then every time when he see one of
them, you know, he saw always their feet. That's in the old day, you know,
people don't have shoes yet, so their feet are always hurt by the stones
and the thorn, the thorn from the bushes. They sometime fall on the street.
So people walk all over and the thorn stick into their feet and it hurts,
and sometimes it bleed and is infected.
And so the King feel very, very heartbroken about this. So then he order
his armies to get the fur and the skin of the dead animals to pave, spread
it on every road so that his subjects, his citizens will walk on it and
don't feel hurt. Not only the road but he order his people to put skin
all over, on top of all of the earth of his country.
So there was a very old and wise minister told the King he has a better
idea. He say, instead of spreading skin all over on the earth, this is
not convenient and it took a lot of time and a lot of money. Instead you
can just put them on each bodies' feet, his peoples' feet and then they
can walk anywhere they want.
Master comments. This sounds a very funny story, but it just symbolize
something. Yeah, just like many people or ourselves sometimes we want to
make the world equal, peaceful, prosperous, friendly, loving and etc. etc..,
but then it's not possible. Just like the thorns or the stone, it keep
falling on the road or sometimes even from the sky, and on top of the earth.
Doesn't matter how much time you cover, there would be stones and thorns
falling back again, even on top of the skin. So it is better then we just
take care of our own feet.
So the Quan Yin Method, it is just like the shoes for your feet. Even though
the world it's still full of trouble, with thorns and stones, but we can
just walk over them. And we feel safe in the world of trouble. Because
as long as many people do not practice the Quan Yin Method, the world still
has trouble. So if we want to be free from the trouble, we just protect
our individual person. Then no problem. Perhaps problem still exists, but
not so much for ourselves. You feel less and less affected by the trouble
of the world. Sometimes if we do feel affected, it is because we have love,
compassion for the one who is affected. (Thus, identify their feelings
as ours.)
You May Not Know
There Is No Ego, Really!
Spoken in English by the Supreme Master Ching Hai at a group meditation
in Hawaii
September 6, 1994
During a group meditation, a fellow initiate asked this question. Master,
could You speak a little bit about the fact that our ego gets in the way
of our close relationship with the God within? How to get rid of it?
Ego Comes From The Effect Of The Environment
There is no ego, really; just the environmental effect. When we were young,
we did something wrong, we got punished, and when we did something good,
we got praised and sometimes overdue praise, and then we learn to manage
to show off because we get praise and get candies, something like that.
And then later on when we grow up, we are in the school and then we learn
that the brilliant one, or those who know how to go about socially and
get the advantage; the same thing we learn again - how to be on top, how
to talk smoothly , how to do things that please people, even though sometimes
these things are not very honestly done, just to win the praise.
That's how we get into the habits, to manage things the way we want so
that we get the spotlight. And that is what we call the ego. There is no
ego to begin with. And then we are so used to with failure and success,
we are proud of ourselves. We think, "Ah! I have accomplished this,
and I have done that. I out did him, I tricked them, and things like that."
And then we get prouder and prouder, and that is the so-called ego. Habit
Is The Information
Collected By The Mind
Actually, it is all habit. We are not born with the ego. That's why I told
you that the environment is very important to the individuals. Two persons
with the same level of intelligence if brought up in different environments
will react differently to the same situation that they are confronted with
because of the habit they acquired, because the things they learned during
their childhood and their lives. So there is no ego really. Now we try
to deal with the habit only.
For example, now you want to meditate, but you're so used to with running
around - at 7 o'clock you go to coffee and 8 o'clock you go dancing and
now I tell you to sit here. Miserable thing, and don't even see God sometimes,
not always, yeah? Some lucky fellows see God all the time, and take it
for granted, and some sit there, the bottom nearly falls off and don't
see anything! So of course, these things will make you feel unhappy. And
then it is difficult for you to believe that there is such thing as God,
and that He is even loving at all. If He is loving, why doesn't he come
to me, why He comes to the neighbors?
Because you tend to learn as you grow up to compare things the way the
worldly people do. They teach you: the neighbor is better than you, his
car is more expensive. Why God gives to him but not gives to me, things
like that? And then this is the so-called ego, the argumentative mind,
that they collected from the influence of the society. So now we have to
do is that go contrary to that. Every time we think some nonsense, we say,"
Okay, that's just your habit. I don't believe in your garbage." And
then just do your work, don't listen to the mind, and slowly you will get
used to it.
Forgive Yourself And Try To Change
The people who are pure in the heart, they are more simple. They get to
God quickly, because they don't have too many thinkings and too many comparisons,
too many studies to overcome. The more intellectual people, or sometimes
the more accomplished people, they are more complicated, because they have
to be in this kind of field to succeed, for example like that. Therefore,
they become habitual to thinking, analyzing pro and con and success and
failure - "If I sit in meditation, what do I get from God? Do I get
anything at all? Is that worth it? You know, time is money" (laughter),
and things like that, sometimes. And then subconsciously, we obstruct ourselves
the way to heaven. That's what we call ego. Actually, there is none.
For example, many children who grew up in a battered home, grow up to become
criminals. They were not loved as a child. They grew up don't love anybody.
They only know violence. They only know force, using muscle force or whatever
force they can get to win the enemy, to become a stronger guy. Most of
them are unloved, and then it's very difficult for them to change that.
Then you would say that's their ego. Actually, I would say it's just a
habit. When we say "habit", it's easier to understand, and also
seems easier to reach and to correct, than to say "ego". It sounds
so frightening, like an entity or something like that, that we have to
fight with. It's not that difficult.
Even brushing the teeth, many people don't brush three times a day because
they don't have the habit, and they can't bother to change. I didn't brush
three times a day when I was young, but when I grew up I understand it
hurts my teeth, and I want to be beautiful. (Laughter) Then I start to
realize the importance of this habit, brushing the teeth after a meal,
and I do it along. That's it, just a habit. A habit, okay?! So forgive
yourself and try to change.
