  • A rival faction in Chad which had led an unsuccessful coup attempt, signed a peace agreement with the President of Chad on Christmas Eve.

  • Pakistan and India began to consider surrendering claims to Kashmir and jointly supporting an independent Kashmiri state.

  • China and Japan announced they had assembled a joint team of historians to re-evaluate 2,000 years of history to find new common ground.

  • In Northern Ireland , the Irish Sinn Fein and the Loyalist Democratic Unionist Party, continued to make progress towards sharing a unified government.

  • In South America , leaders from nations across the continent met to discuss the creation of a pan South American union similar to the European Union.

  • The government of Sudan agreed to a joint peace keeping force from the UN and the African Union to help quell tensions it war-torn Darfur .

  • The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon brokered a cease fire between Lebanese and Israeli soldiers.

  • Leaders from Iran and Iraq released a joint statement pledging to strengthen bi-lateral relations.

  • Aceh in Indonesia held its first democratic elections, in which former rebels sought change through the democratic process rather than through military actions.
